Evolution Model Of Unsaturated Shear Strength Indices Over A Wide Range Of Saturation, Yu-Xin Zhao, Xu Li, Hong-Fen Zhao, Yan Liu
Rock and Soil Mechanics
The variation of shear strength indices of unsaturated soil with the degree of saturation Sr is complicated. In order to describe the experimental phenomena, the existing literature on the variations of cohesion, internal friction angle and dilation angle with Sr is analyzed. The results show that: (1) When Sr decreases and the pore water gradually transits from capillary water to adsorbed water, the friction angle increases. The turning point can be defined as critical degree of saturation Src. When Sr is greater than Src, the value of the friction angle is constant; when Sr is less than Src, the friction …

Classification And Damage Characteristics Of Complex Secondary Cracks In Granite Residual Soil, Cheng-Sheng Li, Bing-Xin Zhang, Zhi-Jun Liu
Rock and Soil Mechanics
The development of cracks is important to the damage and failure of soil. In order to study the evolution of meso-cracks in granite residual soil with complex geotechnical engineering properties, a series of reconstructed volume images was obtained by using CT to scan the process of the triaxial compression test. The crack volume overlap rate is introduced to improve the crack classification method proposed by the author, and the accuracy of judging the connectivity of the two cracks before and after deformation is improved. The results reveal that the change of crack volume overlap rate has a slight effect on …

Pull-Out Test Study On Mechanical Characteristics Of Geogrid-Aggregate Interface, Mu-Han Yan, Xian-Zhang Ling, Liang Tang, Hong Xiao, Xu-Guo Song
Rock and Soil Mechanics
Geogrids are often used in the aggregate cushion of the composite foundation to limit the lateral displacement and reduce the differential deformation. It depends on the interaction between geogrids and aggregate particles. In this study, a series of large-size pull-out tests was performed on biaxial and triaxial geogrids embedded in aggregates with three particle-size gradations. The test results showed that higher normal stress, better gradation and more suitable aggregate particle sizes yielded the increase of the pull-out resistance. The classic punching-shear failure model was proven to be valid for explaining the shear effect between transverse ribs of biaxial geogrids and …

Effect Of Particle Swelling On Hydraulic Performance And Meso-Mechanism Of Geosynthetic Clay Liners, Juan Hou, Jin-Bang Zhang, Yin-Yu Sun, Rui Sun, Fei-Yu Liu
Rock and Soil Mechanics
The hydraulic performance of geosynthetic clay liners (GCL) is closely related to the swelling characteristics of the bentonite particles and the resulting porous medium. However, there currently needs to be more analysis at the mesoscopic level to understand the permeating mechanisms. A numerical model using COMSOL was developed to study the effects of particle swelling on the effective porosity, tortuosity, and hydraulic conductivity of GCL under deionized water actions. The results demonstrate that the swelling of bentonite particles is a crucial factor influencing the effective porosity, tortuosity, and hydraulic conductivity of GCL. Particle swelling significantly affects the width and number …

Uncertainty Quantification Of Live Load Effect In Buried Rc Box Culverts, Mohd Firoj
Dissertations and Theses
Although buried and mostly invisible to the traveling public, bridge-sized culverts (i.e., culverts with span around or longer than 20 ft) account for a large proportion of state-managed bridges. As per Oregon Department of Transportation inventory, there are approximately 35,000 culverts in the state highway system. Among them, 10,862 are in poor conditions and need to be analyzed for load rating purposes. The prediction and understanding of live load effects in culverts are crucial to the design, evaluation, and life-cycle maintenance of culverts. These live load effects include maximum bending moments and shear forces at different critical cross sections.

Solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) is an efficient and clean energy conversion technology that can utilize electricity obtained from renewable resources, such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy to electrolyze water and produce hydrogen. The conversion of abundant intermittent energy to hydrogen energy would facilitate the efficient utilization of energy resources. SOEC is an all-ceramic electrochemical cell that operates in the intermediate to high temperature range of 500–750 ℃. Compared with traditional low temperature electrolysis technology (e.g., alkaline or proton exchange membrane cells operating at ~100 ℃), the high-temperature SOEC can increase the electrolysis efficiency from 80% to ~100%, providing …

Numerical Study Of Owls' Leading-Edge Serrations, Asif Shahriar Nafi, Nikolaos Beratlis, Elias Balaras, Roi Gurka
Physics and Engineering Science
Owls' silent flight is commonly attributed to their special wing morphology combined with wingbeat kinematics. One of these special morphological features is known as the leading-edge serrations: rigid miniature hook-like patterns found at the primaries of the wings' leading-edge. It has been hypothesized that leading-edge serrations function as a passive flow control mechanism, impacting the aerodynamic performance. To elucidate the flow physics associated with owls' leading-edge serrations, we investigate the flow-field characteristic around a barn owl wing with serrated leading-edge geometry positioned at 20° angle of attack for a Reynolds number of 40 000. We use direct numerical simulations, where …

The new coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been destructive to human life and has resulted in a significant number of deaths globally. Detecting COVID-19 as early as possible is a critical way to prohibit the virus from quickly passing among people. RT-PCR is a method used for COVID-19 detection, but it is very expensive and isn’t an accurate method due to its sensitivity of 60–70%. For these reasons, deep learning and imaging techniques are combined by doctors, scientific experts, and professionals for accurate and rapid COVID-19 detection. In this work, we propose a stacked ensemble model based on Linear Regression …
