Mechanically Driven In Vivo Osteocyte Ca2+ Signaling: Aging And Pharmacologic Effects, James Padgett
Mechanically Driven In Vivo Osteocyte Ca2+ Signaling: Aging And Pharmacologic Effects, James Padgett
Dissertations and Theses
Bone’s ability to respond and adapt to mechanical loading declines significantly with age which is a major contributor to bone fragility. It is widely accepted that osteocytes are the key cells responsible for orchestrating the development of the “ideal” skeleton. This ability is attributed to osteocyte’s role as the primary mechanosensing cell that is responsible for maintaining the skeleton’s integrity throughout life. Recent work from our laboratory has shed light into how osteocytes respond to mechanical loading in vivo. The breakthrough approaches that enabled these discoveries were development of: (1) the first ever reporter mouse model with a genetically encoded …
Microfluidic Dual-Gel Cell Culture Model For Studying Cell Migration Under Controlled Interstitial Flow, Alimohamamd Anbari
Microfluidic Dual-Gel Cell Culture Model For Studying Cell Migration Under Controlled Interstitial Flow, Alimohamamd Anbari
Dissertations and Theses
Abstract
Interstitial flow, the slow flux of fluid occurring in the interstitial space of the extracellular matrix (ECM), affects the migration of many cell types through individual and synergistic contributions of several biophysical and biochemical phenomena. Notably, interstitial flow is linked to ECM permeability and provides direct mechanical cues via shear and normal stress. Additionally, the flow also couples with biomolecular diffusion to provide chemotactic signals to the cells. Recent in vitro studies have indicated that tumor cell migration is affected by interstitial fluid velocity and ECM permeability through the mechanisms of (1) autologous chemotaxis and (2) integrin-mediated focal adhesion …
Optimization Of Optical Nanosensor Response For The Detection Of Anthracyclines Using A Binary Machine Learning Classifier, Myesha Thahsin
Optimization Of Optical Nanosensor Response For The Detection Of Anthracyclines Using A Binary Machine Learning Classifier, Myesha Thahsin
Dissertations and Theses
Pharmacokinetic variables such as interindividual variation in metabolizing and eliminating drugs makes dose selection of chemotherapeutic anthracyclines difficult. One potential solution to determining dosing levels of an anthracycline is the development of non-invasive sensors to monitor their pharmacology in vivo. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) have substantial potential for in vivo sensor development, as they exhibit near-infrared fluorescence in the tissue-transparent window and a robust response to their local environment. An emerging method for evaluating and optimizing SWCNT sensor response is through machine learning. In this study, anthracyclines Daunorubicin, Doxorubicin, Epirubicin, Mitoxantrone and Idarubicin, were used to interrogate 12 SWCNT preparations …
Understanding The Kinetics And Mechanisms Of The Desired And Undesired Reactions During Electrochemical Hydrogenation And Hydrogenolysis Of Furfural On Copper In Acidic Media, Andrew S. May
Dissertations and Theses
The decarbonization of the chemical industry would have an immense impact on lowering greenhouse gas emissions and assisting in mitigating global warming. To achieve this there is a growing interest in implementing renewable feedstocks like biomass and coupling of chemical processes with renewable energy. Furfural is a biomass derived species that has been identified as a platform molecule. Electrochemical processes are more easily coupled with renewable electricity and can be used to valorize biomass derived species such as furfural. The installation of electrochemical processes is hindered by a smaller knowledge base compared to thermochemical processes. This dissertation investigates the electrochemical …

Size Distribution, Elemental Composition And Morphology Of Nanoparticles Separated From Respirable Coal Mine Dust, Shoeleh Assemi, Lei Pan, Xuming Wang, Titilayo Akinseye, Jan D. Miller
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Nanoparticles, defined as particles with one dimension below 100 nm, contribute little to the total mass concentration in respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) toxicological studies, but they could have a considerable part in the adverse health effects by RCMD inhalation. It has been shown that inhaled nanoparticles can penetrate deep into the lung and could plausibly contribute to acute and chronic pulmonary diseases by triggering oxidative stress formation and inducing inflammation. RCMD nanoparticles from samples collected in an underground mine in the United States were analyzed by a particle separation technique, field-flow fractionation (FFF), for size, morphology, and elemental composition. …

Machine Learning Prediction Of Dod Personal Property Shipment Costs, Tiffany Tucker, Torrey J. Wagner, Paul Auclair, Brent T. Langhals
Faculty Publications
U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) personal property moves account for 15% of all domestic and international moves - accurate prediction of their cost could draw attention to outlier shipments and improve budget planning. In this work 136,140 shipments between 13 personal property shipment hubs from April 2022 through March 2023 with a total cost of $1.6B were analyzed. Shipment cost was predicted using recursive feature elimination on linear regression and XGBoost algorithms, as well as through neural network hyperparameter sweeps. Modeling was repeated after removing 28 features related to shipment hub location and branch of service to examine their influence …
Stem Education And Retention For Black Women Using High-Impact Practices: Historically Black Colleges And Universities Vs. Predominantly White Liberal Arts Colleges, Annette Njei

Blockchain Games: What On And Off-Chain Factors Affect The Volatility, Returns, And Liquidity Of Gaming Crypto Tokens, Sumer Sareen
CMC Senior Theses
Blockchain games took the internet by storm as they offered a new way for users to play video games, own the assets in those games, and benefit monetarily from their efforts. Through Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrencies, new, Web3 games ushered in a unique asset class for retail and institutional investors to diversify into and benefit from. This paper uses cross-sectional data from 30 blockchain gaming companies to identify on and off-chain factors that affect the company’s token volatility, returns, and liquidity. A multiple linear regression found the percentage of tokens dedicated to a company’s private sale and rewarding users, …
Nonlinear And Time-Modulated Metamaterials: Applications At Microwave Frequencies, Hady Mohammed Saied Sayed Moussa
Nonlinear And Time-Modulated Metamaterials: Applications At Microwave Frequencies, Hady Mohammed Saied Sayed Moussa
Dissertations and Theses
Metamaterials (the Greek prefix meta, means beyond) are artificially structured materials that interact with the incoming waves in extraordinary ways, beyond the properties of natural materials, yielding unusual and exotic electromagnetics phenomena. By careful engineering of the material properties, invoking nonlinear elements and/or time-modulating some of the material parameters, linearity and/or time-invariance can be broken in metamaterials, enabling extraordinary wave phenomena that open opportunities for the microwave engineering community, including the creation of nonreciprocal devices, frequency conversion, and more. In this dissertation, we explore, investigate, design, and fabricate metamaterials that open new applications for nonlinearity-based and time-varying devices, particularly in …
Accelerating A Software Defined Satnav Receiver Using Multiple Parallel Processing Schemes, Logan Reich, Sanjeev Gunawardena, Michael Braasch
Accelerating A Software Defined Satnav Receiver Using Multiple Parallel Processing Schemes, Logan Reich, Sanjeev Gunawardena, Michael Braasch
Faculty Publications
Excerpt: Satnav SDRs present many benefits in terms of flexibility and configurability. However, due to the high bandwidth signals involved in satnav SDR processing, the software must be highly optimized for the host platform in order to achieve acceptable runtimes. Modules such as sample decoding, carrier replica generation, carrier wipeoff, and correlation are computationally intensive components that benefit from accelerations.
Live-Sky Gnss Signal Processing Using A Dual-Polarized Antenna Array For Multipath Mitigation, Eric Hahn, Sanjeev Gunawardena, Chris Bartone
Live-Sky Gnss Signal Processing Using A Dual-Polarized Antenna Array For Multipath Mitigation, Eric Hahn, Sanjeev Gunawardena, Chris Bartone
Faculty Publications
Excerpt: Multipath results from reflections of Global navigation satellite signals (GNSS) signals arriving at a receiver that are delayed with respect to the desired line-of-sight (LOS) signals. The delayed signals distort the received LOS signals, thereby causing pseudorange and carrier phase measurement errors. Traditional multipath mitigation techniques include antenna gain pattern shaping (primarily to reduce ground multipath) and correlator gating techniques (such as narrow correlator and double-delta correlator [1]).
Ultra-High Field Mri Methods For Precise Anatomical And Spectroscopic Measurements In The Brain And Application To Neurological And Neuropsychiatric Diseases, Judy Alper

Low-Fidelity Design Optimization And Parameter Sensitivity Analysis Of Tilt-Rotor Evtol Electric Propulsion Systems, Tyler Critchfield, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
Urban air mobility requires a multidisciplinary approach to tackle the important chal- lenges facing the design of these aircraft. This work uses low-to-mid fidelity tools to model rotor aerodynamics, blade structures, vehicle aerodynamics, and electric propulsion for a tilt-rotor electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. We use gradient-based design optimization and extensive parameter sensitivity analysis to explore the design space and complex tradeoffs of tilt-rotor distributed electric propulsion systems.

Isogeometric Boundary-Conforming Body-In-White Crash Model Construction, Analysis, And Comparison With Fem Model, Kendrick M. Shepherd
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we discuss model generation to rebuild the body-in-white of a 1996 Dodge Neon finite element model into a isogeometric conforming analysis-suitable crash model. We then perform the first known boundary-fit isogeometric body-in-white crash analysis of the vehicle and compare results achieved by traditional finite element methods. Results indicate the value and potential of high-order meshes in analysis.
