Investigating Ph And Other Electrical Properties Of Potassium Salt Solutions, Li Shu, Xi Lu, Veeriah Jegatheesan, Leonardo Jegatheesan

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

A recent study of ours reported that pH of common salts varies with concentration at room temperature. It can either increase in case of basic salts or decrease in case of acidic salts. In this study, pH values of four kind of potassium salts were investigated and their pH values increased with salt concentrations. It was reasoned that the concentration of hydrogen ions equalled the concentration of positive charges/protons in a solution, so a relationship between the activity of hydrogen ions and charge activity was developed. Further, the well-established equations for pH with hydrogen-ion activity and electrostatic/cell potential were extended …

A One-Dimensional Volcanic Plume Model For Predicting Ash Aggregation, D. W. Hoffman, L. G. Mastin, Alexa R. Van Eaton, Stephen Solovitz, Raul Bayoan Cal, J. K. Eaton

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

During explosive volcanic eruptions, volcanic ash is ejected into the atmosphere, impacting aircraft safety and downwind communities. These volcanic clouds tend to be dominated by fine ash (μm in diameter), permitting transport over hundreds to thousands of kilometers. However, field observations show that much of this fine ash aggregates into clusters or pellets with faster settling velocities than individual particles. Models of ash transport and deposition require an understanding of aggregation processes, which depend on factors like moisture content and local particle collision rates. In this study, we develop a Plume Model for Aggregate Prediction, a one-dimensional (1D) volcanic plume …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

While machine-learned interatomic potentials have become a mainstay for modeling materials, designing training sets that lead to robust potentials is challenging. Automated methods, such as active learning and on-the-fly learning, construct reliable training sets, but these processes can be resource-intensive. Current training approaches often use density functional theory (DFT) calculations that have the same cell size as the simulations that the potential is explicitly trained to model. Here, we demonstrate an easy-to-implement small-cell training protocol and use it to model the Zr-H system. This training leads to a potential that accurately predicts known stable Zr-H phases and reproduces the α-β …

To address this challenge, this dissertation focuses on applying …

Leveraging Inflammatory Responses Toward Advancing Alzheimer’S Disease Treatments And Biomaterial Implantation, Mihyun Lim Waugh Oct 2023

Leveraging Inflammatory Responses Toward Advancing Alzheimer’S Disease Treatments And Biomaterial Implantation, Mihyun Lim Waugh

Theses and Dissertations

Inflammation is a body’s physiological response to pathogens, foreign materials, or tissue injury. When immune system is triggered, activated leukocytes produce cytokines and chemokines that promote migration of neutrophils and macrophages to the inflammatory regions. At early stages of injury, acute inflammation occurs immediately to fight off the pathogens and restore tissues to homeostasis. However, if the inflammation-inducing stimulus is not removed and thus cells and tissues do not return to its homeostatic state, the prolonged inflammatory responses become a chronic condition. Recent studies have indicated that the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE), a key receptor of innate immune …
