Design Of Revising Proximity Between Space And Time Cues On Flight Deck Displays To Support Nextgen – The First Phase, Chang-Geun Oh, Jennie J. Gallimore, Pamela S. Tsang

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate novel display formats to support RTA operations for near to midterm NextGen. Traditional cockpit displays separate space and time information in distant display sources in heterogeneous formats (graphics vs. text). This design composition may cause potential pilot errors when required time of arrival (RTA) obligations are imposed at every waypoint in NextGen. Pilots were randomly assigned to four different display conditions in a simulator – one traditional display with distant space and time cues, and three novel displays with close spatial proximity between the two cues. In the first phase …

Evaluating Small Uas Near Midair Collision Risk Using Aeroscope And Ads-B, Ryan J. Wallace, Kristy W. Kiernan, Tom Haritos, John Robbins, Godfrey V. D'Souza

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

As small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) continue to proliferate in the National Airspace System (NAS), near midair collisions are becoming more common. In late 2017, the National Transportation Safety Board released a report detailing the first confirmed midair collision between a sUAS and manned aircraft in the United States. In February 2018, a video of a sUAS maneuvering around a passenger jetliner on approach to a Las Vegas airport went viral on YouTube. Just months later, a helicopter instructor pilot reported performing evasive maneuvers to avoid colliding with a sUAS, resulting in a non-fatal crash. From 2014 to 2018 the …

Manned Versus Unmanned Aircraft Accidents, Including Causation And Rates, Justin A. Jaussi, Herbert O. Hoffmann Jan 2018

Manned Versus Unmanned Aircraft Accidents, Including Causation And Rates, Justin A. Jaussi, Herbert O. Hoffmann

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Many consider aircraft reliability a primary deterrent to the further integration of unmanned aircraft into civil airspace. Discussions of unmanned aircraft reliability often include comparisons of accident rates of medium and large unmanned aircraft (like the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper) to those of manned aircraft. These comparisons, however, often consider a recent period only but do not consider platform maturity. While this approach is valid—and worthy of discussion—it does not present a complete picture of the unmanned aircraft safety record. This paper employs a chi-square goodness-of-fit approach to compare the progression of the U.S. Air Force MQ-9 mishap rate …

Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of Monometallic And Bimetallic Catalysts, Sonia Eskandari Jan 2018

Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of Monometallic And Bimetallic Catalysts, Sonia Eskandari

Theses and Dissertations

Supported catalysts are used extensively in a variety of heterogeneously catalyzed reactions for industrial processes. Techniques for preparing supported noble metal catalysts are typically chosen to achieve high metal dispersions in order to obtain high activity for a given metal loading. Enhancing the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts can be done by increasing active site count as well as modification of the physico-chemical characteristics of the catalyst material. For supported metal nanoparticles this can be achieved by decreasing particle size, thus increasing dispersion or metal utilization on the surface of the particles, while modification of metal properties can be attained …

Combinatorial Study Of Oxidation Catalysts: Uncovering Synthesis-Structure-Activity Relationships, Kathleen B. Mingle Jan 2018

Combinatorial Study Of Oxidation Catalysts: Uncovering Synthesis-Structure-Activity Relationships, Kathleen B. Mingle

Theses and Dissertations

High throughput experimentation (HTE) in catalysis has proven useful in expediting materials discovery via parallelized synthesis, characterization, and testing of candidate materials. However, even in a high-throughput manner, the combinatorial explosion of relevant parameters far exceeds our ability to study. To further complicate the problem, a large time investment and great deal of characterization is often required to build an in-depth understanding of catalytic materials. It follows that the field of heterogeneous catalysis is rich with examples of catalytic systems that have been developed using trial and error efforts for which a lot is known but context is lacking. Techniques …

Analysis Of Pellet-Cladding Mechanical Interaction On U3si2 Fuel With A Multi-Layer Sic Cladding Using Bison, Ray A. Freeman

Theses and Dissertations

U3Si2 is currently being considered as a possible replacement for the current light water reactor fuel, UO2. U3Si2’s high melting temperature, high uranium density, and high thermal conductivity are favorable in accident conditions, such as a loss of coolant accident. Improved accident performance is further expected when paired with a SiC/SiC cladding, since it provides relatively high strength and a high oxidation resistance.

Modeling of U3Si2 and SiC/SiC in reactor is currently very important since much of their behavior is still unknown. By implementing models that describe the properties of U3Si2 and SiC/SiC into INL’s fuel performance code BISON, performance …

Effect Of Weak Adhesion Interface On Mechanical And Dielectric Properties Of Composite Materials, Prashant Katiyar Jan 2018

Effect Of Weak Adhesion Interface On Mechanical And Dielectric Properties Of Composite Materials, Prashant Katiyar

Theses and Dissertations

Interfaces are often the most critical part of the heterogeneous materials and their structures. Such interfaces appear a multiple length scales and significantly affect bulk properties in different material systems. Fiber reinforced composite materials are one such example of heterogeneous materials with interfaces at constituent scale (fiber-matrix interface and interphase) to laminate scale (secondary adhesive joints). Manufacturing induced defects and subsequent in-service damage at these interfaces can severely affect the durability of fiber reinforced laminated composite materials and their joints. In addition to lamination process, defects can also form during secondary joining process (e.g., adhesive bonding and repair) which can …

Tracking, Detection And Registration In Microscopy Material Images, Hongkai Yu Jan 2018

Tracking, Detection And Registration In Microscopy Material Images, Hongkai Yu

Theses and Dissertations

Fast and accurate characterization of fiber micro-structures plays a central role for material scientists to analyze physical properties of continuous fiber reinforced composite materials. In materials science, this is usually achieved by continuously crosssectioning a 3D material sample for a sequence of 2D microscopic images, followed by a fiber detection/tracking algorithm through the obtained image sequence.

To speed up this process and be able to handle larger-size material samples, we propose sparse sampling with larger inter-slice distance in cross sectioning and develop a new algorithm that can robustly track large-scale fibers from such a sparsely sampled image sequence. In particular, …

Dynamic Simulation Of A Solar Powered Hybrid Sulfur Process For Hydrogen Production, Satwick Boddu

Theses and Dissertations

The Hybrid Sulfur process is a thermo-electrochemical cycle used to produce hydrogen from water. The process requires a high temperature energy source for H2SO4 decomposition with temperature reaching 800°C. This step is followed by SO2 - depolarized water electrolysis. Using solar energy as the high temperature energy source allows for efficient environmentally friendly production of hydrogen. This method is an alternative to traditional photovoltaic electrolysis for hydrogen production. Making the process economically competitive is a major challenge. Operating the process with changes in the availability of solar energy also increases process complexity. The dependence of the process on solar energy …

Computations Of The Dynamic Fracture Of Plane Structures By The Extended Finite Element Method, Iman Asareh Jan 2018

Computations Of The Dynamic Fracture Of Plane Structures By The Extended Finite Element Method, Iman Asareh

Theses and Dissertations

Finite element methods for the simulation of dynamic fracture in plane structures are presented. The method is a modified extended finite element method (XFEM) for dynamic fracture simulations with a new methodology to construct the XFEM basis functions for discontinuities. In contrast to conventional XFEM in which the extended interpolation is defined to only capture the discontinuities, the proposed method describes the enrichment functions so that they reproduce both the discontinuities and the polynomial bases of sufficiently high order which are critical for finite element convergence. Such enrichment functions, by adopting the Duffy’s transformation, can be simply defined in terms …

A Comprehensive Reengineering Of The Hospital Emergency Triage System, Nicholas D. Boltin Jan 2018

A Comprehensive Reengineering Of The Hospital Emergency Triage System, Nicholas D. Boltin

Theses and Dissertations

Hospital emergency triage and specifically Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs) are of major concern with regard to treatment and patient outcomes. Traditional emergency department triage models are oversimplified and often lead to over/under triaging of patients. Furthermore, triage models do not account for the full spectrum of different types of MCIs which often results in misclassification. In this thesis, we begin by looking at traditional triage models currently being used in hospital systems and identify several shortcomings of using these models within the context of a chemical related MCI. I will then move to describe a new approach to creating a …

Theses

Blast-induced Traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a leading cause of morbidity in soldiers on the battlefield and training sites with long-term neurological and psychological pathologies. Among many pathological sequela of blast TBI, oxidative stress has been identified as a major factor contributing to the pathophysiology of bTBI. Recent studies have demonstrated activation of oxidative stress pathways following blast injury but their distribution among different brain regions as function of post injury time and Blast over pressure (BOP) have not been explored. The present study examines the protein expression of NADP oxidase (NOX) isoforms 1 & 2, corresponding superoxide production, a …

The Rational Synthesis Of Bimetallic Catalysts On Oxide Supports, Andrew Phillip Wong Jan 2018

The Rational Synthesis Of Bimetallic Catalysts On Oxide Supports, Andrew Phillip Wong

Theses and Dissertations

Catalysts play an important role in many chemical reactions. However, simple impregnated monometallic catalysts are often limited in their function. One way to overcome this limitation is through the incorporation of a secondary metal to the catalysts. These bimetallic catalysts often have synergistic benefits not observed in the monometallic analogues. Here, we focused on the synthesis of bimetallic catalysts using rational methods in order to improve catalyst function; specifically by tuning the particle size, morphology, and composition. The two methods of interests were Strong Electrostatic Adsorption (SEA) and Electroless Deposition (ED). An adaptation of SEA to bimetallic catalysts (coSEA) was …

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Corrosion Damage In Reinforced Concrete Aged Slab Specimen, Rawya Abdulsattar Abduljabbar

Theses and Dissertations

The deterioration of concrete bridge decks presents a maintenance challenge for most transportation agencies and bridge owners. This problem increases during the freeze-thaw cycle. De-icing salts can accelerate the deterioration process. Corrosion of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete structures is considered a dominant factor causing premature deterioration, especially those structures located in a coastal environment. The resulting corrosion product produced has several times the volume of steel, resulting in cracking of the concrete cover if the corrosion is significant. In this study, a bridge deck specimen was subjected to an artificial environment to accelerate the corrosion process. Prior to this …
