Task Complexity, And Operators’ Capabilities As Predictor Of Human Error: Modeling Framework And An Example Of Application, Maria Chiara Leva, Alberto Caimo, Rebecca Duane, Micaela Demichela, Lorenzo Comberti

Conference Papers

This paper presents the initial framework adopted to assess human error in assembly tasks at a large manufacturing company in Ireland. The model to characterize and predict human error presented in this paper is linked conceptually to the model introduced by Rasch (1980), where the probability of a specified outcome is modelled as a logistic function of the difference between the person capacity and item difficulty. The model needs to be modified to take into account an outcome that is not dichotomous and feed into the interaction between two macro factors: (a) Task complexity: that sum-marises all factors contributing to …

Associative Learning In Biochemical Networks, Yasmin S. Sepulveda Jan 2018

Associative Learning In Biochemical Networks, Yasmin S. Sepulveda

REU Final Reports

Emerging evidence suggests that biochemical networks can be modeled by exploiting their ability to learn through associative learning. This type of learning in biomolecular structures gives it a the advantage to be able to be computationally model, and condition. Associative learning in biochemical networks is a developing area of study that once understood, can further develop diagnostic applications, and be used as tools for data analysis. Although it is a open ended project the motive of this research was to find the the best method of association learning being used in current work. After reading current work three associative learning …

Effects Of Land Development And Season On Heavy Metal Concentrations In Urban Streams, Helen Daigle Jan 2018

Effects Of Land Development And Season On Heavy Metal Concentrations In Urban Streams, Helen Daigle

REU Final Reports

Although it is generally understood that urban development can impact the quality of urban streams, there are many factors that affect the concentrations of pollutants being transferred from the built environment to a given output. This study examines the impact of land use surrounding urban streams, specifically, the degree of development and presence or absence of green infrastructure (GI) in these areas on heavy metal (HM) concentrations in Portland, Oregon. After collecting 1021 water quality samples from 2010-2018, we examined the difference in concentrations of HM pollutants across different combinations of land use and season. Increased levels of calcium, magnesium, …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Gas Transport And Adsorption In Ultra-Tight Formations, Yannick Tambe Agbor Jan 2018

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Gas Transport And Adsorption In Ultra-Tight Formations, Yannick Tambe Agbor

Theses and Dissertations

Kerogen, which plays a very important part in reservoir characterization for ultra-tight formations, is also involved in the storage and production of hydrocarbons in shale. In this work, we study the kerogen structure and its interaction with insitu hydrocarbons to fully understand the fluid flow and adsorption mechanisms in the shale. Also the advancement in pore network modelling has greatly helped the understanding of mesoscale fluid flow. In this work, transport of methane in a type II marine environment kerogen model is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. Non Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations (NEMDS) using GROMACS code and Grand Canonical Monte …

Controlling Normal Stiffness In Droplet-Based Linear Bearings, Qi Ni, Nathan B. Crane Jan 2018

Controlling Normal Stiffness In Droplet-Based Linear Bearings, Qi Ni, Nathan B. Crane

Faculty Publications

While Capillary forces are negligible relative to gravity at the macroscale, they provide adequate force to effectively manipulate millimeter to micro meter objects. The fluidic actuation can be accomplished using droplets that also act as bearings. While rotary droplet bearings have been previously demonstrated, this paper considers the performance potential of discrete droplets acting as linear bearings. Specifically, it addresses the positioning accuracy of a droplet-based bearing consisting of a droplet between a moving plate and a stationary substrate with constrained wetting region under a normal load using both closed form analytical solutions and numerical simulations. The vertical force and …
