Cassette Lockring Removal Tool, Kyle Wright
Cassette Lockring Removal Tool, Kyle Wright
All Undergraduate Projects
Removal of a bicycle cassette requires additional tools to hold the cassette in place while loosening the cassette lockring. Typically a tool called a chain whip is used to stabilize the cassette, but is difficult to quickly and correctly apply to the cassette. Due to the need for an additional tool to hold the cassette, the user is faced with utilizing both hands while still needing to somehow hold the wheel in place. The lockring is torqued relatively tight and the overall combination of force, ergonomics, and number of tools required makes the task difficult to perform quickly. The objective …

Flow Control Of Tandem Cylinders Using Plasma Actuators, Jonah Larsen
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The flow over a set of tandem cylinders at a moderate Reynolds numbers (Re), and with different separation lengths has been studied. Two dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) plasma actuators were used to control the flow over the leading cylinder to change the vortex shedding, and subsequently the flow on the second cylinder. The 3D plasma actuator was segmented along the length of the cylinder with a spacing of λ = 4 while the 2D actuator simply ran straight down the span of the cylinder. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were used to investigate the flow along the central plane …

Surfactant Driven Assembly Of Freeze-Casted, Polymer-Derived Ceramic Nanoparticles On Grapehene Oxide Sheets For Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes, Ali Zein Khater
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Traditional Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) are a reliable and cost-efficient choice for energy storage. LIBs offer high energy density and low self-discharge. Recent developments in electric-based technologies push for replacing historically used Lead-Acid batteries with LIBs. However, LIBs do not yet meet the demands of modern technology. Silicon and graphene oxide (GO) have been identified as promising replacements to improve anode materials. Graphene oxide has a unique sheet-like structure that provides a mechanically stable, light weight material for LIB anodes. Due to its structure, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is efficiently conductive and resistive to environmental changes. On the other hand, silicon-based …
A Machine Learning Approach To Assess The Separation Of Seismocardiographic Signals By Respiration, Brian Solar
A Machine Learning Approach To Assess The Separation Of Seismocardiographic Signals By Respiration, Brian Solar
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The clinical usage of Seismocardiography (SCG) is increasing as it is being shown to be an effective non-invasive measurement for heart monitoring. SCG measures the vibrational activity at the chest surface and applications include non-invasive assessment of myocardial contractility and systolic time intervals. Respiratory activity can also affect the SCG signal by changing the hemodynamic characteristics of cardiac activity and displacing the position of the heart. Other clinically significant information, such as systolic time intervals, can thus manifest themselves differently in an SCG signal during inspiration and expiration. Grouping SCG signals into their respective respiratory cycle can mitigate this issue. …

Safety Assessment And Risk Estimation For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Operating In National Airspace System, Xuejun Zhang, Yang Liu, Yu Zhang, Xiangmin Guan, Daniel Delahaye, Li Tang
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper proposes an effective approach for modelling and assessing the risks associated with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) integrated into national airspace system (NAS). Two critical hazards with UAV operations are considered and analyzed, which are ground impacts and midair collisions. Threats to fatalities that result from the two hazards are the focus in the proposed method. In order to realize ground impact assessment, a multifactor risk model is designed by calculating system reliability required to meet a target level of safety for different UAV categories. Both fixed-wing and rotary-wing UAVs are taken into account under a real scenario that …

Oil Droplet Transport Under Non-Breaking Waves: An Eulerian Rans Approach Combined With A Lagrangian Particle Dispersion Model, Roozbeh Golshan, Michel C. Boufadel, Victor A. Rodriguez, Xiaolong Geng, Feng Gao, Thomas King, Brian Robinson, Andres E. Tejada-Martinez
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Oil droplet transport under a non-breaking deep water wave field is investigated herein using Computational Fluid dynamics (CFD). The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations were solved to simulate regular waves in the absence of wind stress, and the resulting water velocities agreed with Stokes theory for waves. The RANS velocity field was then used to predict the transport of buoyant particles representing oil droplets under the effect of non-locally generated turbulence. The RANS eddy viscosity exhibited an increase with depth until reaching a maximum at approximately a wave height below the mean water level. This was followed by a gradual decrease …

A Proposed Taxonomy For The Systems Statistical Engineering Body Of Knowledge, Teddy Steven Cotter
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
In the ASEM-IAC 2012, Cotter (2012) identified the gaps in knowledge that statistical engineering needs to address, explored additional gaps in knowledge not addressed in the prior works, and set forth a working definition of and body of knowledge for statistical engineering. In the ASEM-IAC 2015, Cotter (2015) proposed a systemic causal Bayesian hierarchical model that addressed the knowledge gap needed to integrate deterministic mathematical engineering causal models within a stochastic framework. Missing, however, is the framework for specifying the hierarchical qualitative systems structures necessary and sufficient for specifying systemic causal Bayesian hierarchical models. In the ASEM-IAC 2016, Cotter (2016) …

A Method For Identification, Representation, And Assessment Of Complex System Pathologies In Acquisition Programs, Charles B. Keating, Polinpapilinho F. Katina, Keith F. Joiner, Joseph M. Bradley, Raed M. Jaradat
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Acquisition programs continue to struggle with increasing complexity. High degrees of emergence, interconnectedness, and uncertainty are the norm rather than exception. The purpose of this research is to explore extension of ongoing research in complex system pathologies for acquisition programs. Significant advances have been made in development of deeper understanding of the nature of pathologies (deviations from healthy system function) and their implications for performance of complex systems. Complex system pathologies represent violations of underlying system principles. These violations negatively affect system governance functions (control, oversight, accountability) resulting in degradation of system performance. Greater understanding of complex system pathologies offers …

The defense acquisition system has been the source of intense scrutiny and calls for reform for over four decades. This research is to examine the contributions of Systems Theory to enhance prospects related to acquisition reform. Systems Theory offers a set of principles, laws, and concepts that explain the behavior of complex systems. Although the acquisition system and constituent programs have been critiqued and examined from multiple perspectives, they have never been the subject of exploration from Systems Theory. Recent advances in Systems Theory have identified 83 different potential system pathologies that can result in degraded system performance or outright …
Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett
Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett
CMC Senior Theses
Fossils belonging to the genus Homo, dating as far back as two million years ago, exhibit uniquely efficient features suggesting that early humans had evolved to become exceptional endurance runners. Although they did not have the cushion or stability-control features provided in our modern day running shoes, our early human ancestors experienced far less of the running-related injuries we experience today. The injury rate has been estimated as high as 90% annually for Americans training for a marathon and as high as 79% annually for all American endurance runners. There is an injury epidemic in conventionally shod populations that …

The Mn valence in thin film La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 was studied as a function of film thickness in the range of 1–16 unit cells with a combination of non-destructive bulk and surface sensitive X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques. Using a layer-by-layer valence model, it was found that while the bulk averaged valence hovers around its expected value of 3.3, a significant deviation occurs within several unit cells of the surface and interface. These results were supported by first principles calculations. The surface valence increases to up to Mn3.7+, whereas the interface valence reduces down to Mn2.5+. The change in valence from the expected …

Self-Organizing Mmwave Networks: A Power Allocation Scheme Based On Machine Learning, Roohollah Amiri, Hani Mehrpouyan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is anticipated to provide significant throughout gains in urban scenarios. To this end, network densification is a necessity to meet the high traffic volume generated by smart phones, tablets, and sensory devices while overcoming large pathloss and high blockages at mmWaves frequencies. These denser networks are created with users deploying small mmWave base stations (BSs) in a plug-and-play fashion. Although, this deployment method provides the required density, the amorphous deployment of BSs needs distributed management. To address this difficulty, we propose a self-organizing method to allocate power to mmWave BSs in an ultra dense network. The proposed …

The large spectrum available in the millimeter- Wave (mmWave) band has emerged as a promising solution for meeting the huge capacity requirements of the 5th generation (5G) wireless networks. However, to fully harness the potential of mmWave communications, obstacles such as severe path loss, channel sparsity and hardware complexity should be overcome. In this paper, we introduce a generalized reconfigurable antenna multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architecture that takes advantage of lens-based reconfigurable antennas. The considered antennas can support multiple radiation patterns simultaneously by using a single RF chain. The degrees of freedom provided by the reconfigurable antennas are used to, first, …

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Based On Hybrid Beamforming For Mmwave Systems, Mojtaba Ahmadi Almasi, Hani Mehrpouyan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper aims to study the utilization of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in hybrid beamforming (HB) multiuser systems, called HB-NOMA, to serve a large number of mobile users. First, a sum-rate expression for the HB-NOMA problem is formulated. Second, an effective algorithm is proposed to maximize the sum-rate. Then, a lower bound is derived under two cases: i) the angle between the effective channel vectors of the MU with the highest channel gain and other MUs located inside a cluster is zero (or close to it) which is denoted by perfect correlation, and ii) this angle is non-zero, which we …

Dense deployment of small base stations (SBSs) is one of the main methods to meet the 5G data rate requirements. However, high density of independent SBSs will increase the interference within the network. To circumvent this interference, there is a need to develop self-organizing methods to manage the resources of the network. In this paper, we present a distributed power allocation algorithm based on multi-agent Q-learning in an interference-limited network. The proposed method leverages coordination through simple message passing between SBSs to achieve an optimal joint power allocation. Simulation results show the optimality of the proposed method for a …

Different Facial Recognition Techniques In Transform Domains, Taif Al Obaidi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The human face is frequently used as the biometric signal presented to a machine for identification purposes. Several challenges are encountered while designing face identification systems. The challenges are either caused by the process of capturing the face image itself, or occur while processing the face poses. Since the face image not only contains the face, this adds to the data dimensionality, and thus degrades the performance of the recognition system. Face Recognition (FR) has been a major signal processing topic of interest in the last few decades. Most common applications of the FR include, forensics, access authorization to facilities, …
