Pressure Image Based Attitude Controller For Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Kenneth Thompson
Pressure Image Based Attitude Controller For Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Kenneth Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As technology improves, small unmanned aerial vehicles (SUAV) have been identified for their utility in a variety of applications in which larger unmanned craft may be incapable of accomplishing mission objectives. These aircraft with their small size and long flight durations are ideal for hazardous inspection and long duration surveillance missions. One challenge preventing the widespread adoption of these systems is their instability to abrupt changes in the flow field around them due to wind gusts or flow separation. Currently, traditional rigid body based sensors are implemented in their flight control systems, which are sufficient in higher inertia aircraft for …

Venous Thromboembolism (Vte) Harm Measurement And Risk Assessment In Real-Time Using Electronic Health Records(Ehr), Seyed Mani Marashi
Wayne State University Dissertations
Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is a deadly disease and is considered as one of the top reasons for avoidable hospital deaths in the United States and around the world. Patients who survive this disease often must face life-long complications such as Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTPH), etc. Therefore, it is important to monitor and reduce the number of VTE instances in hospitals. This study shows how Electronic Health Records (EHRs) can be utilized to achieve this goal.
First, a new near real-time VTE harm measurement model was developed. Not only the developed model can deliver near real-time results, …

Impact Of Nanobubbles On Mechanical Coal Flotation Process, Ahmed Sobhy, Dongping Tao
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A bank of three 10-liter mechanical flotation cells integrated with nanobubble technology was investigated to assess the impact of nanobubbles on coal separation performance at different operating variables. The most significant operation parameters such as fuel oil collector dosage, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) frother concentration, flow rate to nanobubble generator, feed solid concentration, and feed flow rate were studied individually. Nanobubbles are generated selectively on the hydrophobic particles, which should have a positive effect on flotation separation efficiency. It has been shown that frother concentration, collector dosage, and flow rate to nanobubble generator had a positive and significant effect on …

Robust Topological Phase In Proximitized Core–Shell Nanowires Coupled To Multiple Superconductors, Tudor D. Stanescu, Anna Stitek, Andrei Manolescu
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
We consider core–shell nanowires with prismatic geometry contacted with two or more superconductors in the presence of a mag- netic field applied parallel to the wire. In this geometry, the lowest energy states are localized on the outer edges of the shell, which strongly inhibits the orbital effects of the longitudinal magnetic field that are detrimental to Majorana physics. Using a tight-binding model of coupled parallel chains, we calculate the topological phase diagram of the hybrid system in the presence of non-vanishing transverse potentials and finite relative phases between the parent superconductors. We show that having finite relative phases strongly …

For several years there has been an impasse, in the political branches, over how to make progress on dealing with the intractable problem of nuclear waste disposal in the United States. Currently, over 120 sites, spread across 39 states, host commercial spent fuel—many of these sites are former reactors that have become de facto interim nuclear waste storage sites, pending a permanent solution. Transportation considerations are central in this discussion. With the potential for Congress to make progress on this issue following the 2018 midterm elections, this article reviews the potential paths forward and considers possible implications for the transportation …

While inflammation can be problematic, it is nonetheless necessary for proper tissue regeneration. However, it remains unclear how the magnitude and duration of the inflammatory response impacts regenerative outcome. This is partially due to the difficulty in temporally regulating macrophage phenotype at wound sites. Here, a magnetically responsive biomaterial system potentially capable of temporally regulating macrophage phenotypes through sequential, on‐demand cytokine deliveries is presented. This material system is designed to (i) rapidly recruit proinflammatory macrophages (M1) through initial cytokine deliveries and (ii) subsequently transition macrophages toward anti‐inflammatory phenotypes (M2s) through delayed, magnetically triggered cytokine release. Here, the ability of this …

Robust Power Interface For Smart Grid With Renewable Energy Source-To-Grid Functionality, Bohyun Ahn
Robust Power Interface For Smart Grid With Renewable Energy Source-To-Grid Functionality, Bohyun Ahn
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Many renewable energy companies design wind turbine generators, solar panels, or electrical car batteries with different specifications according to their management philosophy. And typical commercial power converters are not universally designed for all different types of renewable energy systems. Because of this lack of flexibility and interoperability, a universal and scalable smart grid power converter design is desirable. Designing a robust controlled bi-directional power converter is the motivation for this thesis as the first step to develop a more universal converter topology connecting renewable energy sources and the electrical smart-grid of the future.
Renewable energy such as wind or solar …

The Design, Test And Evaluation Of A Sensing System For Process Analytical Technology (Pat), Trevor Murphy
Theses
Increased globalisation and competitiveness has given rise to a more dynamic and diverse global market that has begun to place incredible strain on manufacturing supply chains. Conventional manufacturing methods such as the batch manufacturing methods employed largely by the materials processing industries i.e. pharmaceuticals, polymers and magnesium processing plants are ill-suited to cope with the demands of today. As products evolve with technological advancements they become more complex to produce and require alternative approaches to manufacturing to ensure product quality while reducing costs and increasing manufacturing efficiencies.
A potential solution to the growing demands on today's supply chain is process …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
STORM (System-Theoretic and Technical Operational Risk Management) is a systems security engineering (SSE) methodology for assuring missions and managing risk. Fully consistent with the System Security Engineering principles and objectives as described in NIST SP 800-160, STORM addresses the shortcomings of compliance-centric approaches by providing rigorous, behavior-focused tools applicable at both leadership and technical levels.
STORM integrates two principal components: STPA-Sec (System-Theoretic Process Analysis for Security) and CSBD (Certified Security by Design). STPA-Sec is used to derive and validate a mission Concept of Operation (CONOPS) by enumerating unacceptable losses, identifying hazards and unsafe control actions, and identifying security constraints. CSBD …
Low-Cost Multimode Patch Antenna For Dual Mimo And Enhanced Localization Use, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann
Low-Cost Multimode Patch Antenna For Dual Mimo And Enhanced Localization Use, Adam Narbudowicz, Max Ammann
Articles
This paper proposes a simple, low-cost multi-mode patch antenna combining good MIMO performance with precise Angle of Arrival (AoA) estimation. The AoA is based on the monopulse antenna concept, however, unlike in radar applications, the necessity for complex circuitry is replaced by the intrinsic properties of even and odd resonant patch modes. This capability is advantageous for future “Internet of Things” antennas, embedded into low-cost and size-constrained devices. The envelope correlation coefficient, measured in an anechoic chamber, is below 1.5 %, ensuring good MIMO performance. An exemplary addition to localization algorithm exploiting antenna properties is demonstrated.

Conference papers
Well-developed 3-D spatial skills are correlated with engineering success. However, most studies examining the link between spatial skills and engineering success have been conducted at the macro level, i.e., the link between spatial skills and course grades or between spatial skills and graduation rates. In this research, a more refined approach has been taken. Relationships between spatial skills and success in solving certain types of problems that engineering students commonly encounter are examined. It was found that high levels of spatial skills predict success in solving certain types of engineering problems but not in all types of problems. Data gathered …

Application Of Improved Phase-Shifted Pulse Width Modulation With Third Harmonic Injection To Hybrid Modular Multi-Level Converter, Mohammad Mohsen Rahimian, Majid Hosseinpour, Malabika Basu, Michael Farrell, Shahab Sajedi
Conference papers
Hybrid modular multi-level converters (Hybrid-
MMCs) which are modular multi-level converters including full and half bridge sub-modules, are recently used in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Compared to its non-hybrid counterpart, these converters have several advantages such as the ability to nullify the DC side fault current and controlling AC side reactive power during the faults. This paper proposes a novel modified phase shifted PWM method (PS-PWM) which uses a combination of an improved PS-PWM with cancelled mismatch pulses and a third harmonic injection method. The proposed method not only reduces output voltage harmonic content and uneven loss distribution …

Capacity Enhancement And Flexible Operation Of Unified Power Quality Conditioner In Smart And Microgrid Network, Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon
Reports
This paper presents a new approach to design Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC), termed as distributed UPQC (D-UPQC), for smart or microgrid network where capacity enhancement and flexible operation of UPQC are the important issues. This paper shows the possibility of capacity enhancement and operational flexibility of UPQC through a coordinated control of existing resources. This UPQC consists of a single unit series active power filter (APFse) and multiple shunt APF (APFsh) units in a distributed (parallel) mode. These units can be connected with a common/separate dc linked capacitor(s). The requirement of capacity enhancement arises from the flexibility to cope …

Consideration of spatial and temporal diversity of EV charging demand has been demonstrated to reduce the estimating impacts on the distribution networks. The data formulation is based on impact studies of Electrical vehicles (EV s) on distribution networks. It is suggested that Distribution System Operator (DSO) could benefit for new innovation/advancement in the market (BESS-STATCOM) in a way that makes networks more reliable/robust, In this regard such innovation creates more opportunities for demand side management, reduces planning uncertainties associated with stochastic nature of EV charging and makes space for demand side management. This work considers probabilistic load flow in a …

The dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is mainly used in a utility grid to protect sensitive loads from power quality problems, such as voltage sags and swells. However, the effectiveness of the DVR can wane under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. Recently, DVR control algorithms have been developed that enable the elimination of voltage harmonics in weak and distorted utility networks. This paper presents a modified control method for the DVR, which can (1) compensate the voltage swell and (2) eliminate the voltage harmonics in a combined utility condition consisting of voltage unbalance and harmonic distortion. A self-tuning filter (STF) is used …

Passive Self-Interference Suppression For Single Channel Full-Duplex Operation, Adam Narbudowicz, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann
Articles
Full duplex radios have become a topic of increased interest in the wireless communications community. As part of this development, many efforts were directed to passively decrease the self-interference level at the antenna outputs. However, in many proposed solutions transmission and reception occur through different propagation channels. This paper demonstrates and quantifies the negative impact of channel differentiation on pivotal applications of full-duplex radio, such as cognitive radio. Antenna designs used for self-interference suppression in full-duplex radio architectures are analyzed. In order to ensure that transmission and reception occur within the same propagation channel, the use of the envelope correlation …

Policy makers are considering several alternatives to counter the negative externalities of personal vehicle dependence. Towards this end, public transit investments are critical in growing urban regions such as Orlando, Florida. Transit system managers and planners mostly rely on statistical models to identify the factors that affect ridership as well as quantifying the magnitude of the impact on the society. These models provide vital feedback to agencies on the benefits of public transit investments which in turn act as lessons to improve the investment process. We contribute to public transit literature by addressing several methodological challenges for transit ridership modeling. …

Theses and Dissertations
Digital Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems in safety-related applications of next generation industrial automation systems require high levels of resilience against different fault classes. One of the more essential concepts for achieving this goal is the notion of resilient and survivable digital I&C systems. In recent years, self-healing concepts based on biological physiology have received attention for the design of robust digital systems. However, many of these approaches have not been architected from the outset with safety in mind, nor have they been targeted for the automation community where a significant need exists. This dissertation presents a new self-healing digital …

A Joint Econometric Approach For Modeling Crash Counts By Collision Type, Tanmoy Bhowmik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, there is growing recognition that common unobserved factors that influence crash frequency by one attribute level are also likely to influence crash frequency by other attribute levels. The most common approach employed to address the potential unobserved heterogeneity in safety literature is the development of multivariate crash frequency models. The current study proposes an alternative joint econometric framework to accommodate for the presence of unobserved heterogeneity – referred to as joint negative binomial-multinomial logit fractional split (NB-MNLFS) model. Furthermore, the study undertakes a first of its kind comparison exercise between the most commonly used multivariate model (multivariate …
