Piezoelectric-Based Cardiac Monitoring Portable System, Shina Siamak Mokhtari Nov 2018

Piezoelectric-Based Cardiac Monitoring Portable System, Shina Siamak Mokhtari

Electrical Engineering Theses

In this thesis, a portable-based cardiac monitoring system is discussed, which helps to keep a check on the corresponding patient vitals. This work describes the design and development of a Bluetooth system, incorporating a piezoelectric sensor-sheet. The demonstrated prototype avoids the need for collecting the signals with wires. When the Bluetooth-connected piezoelectric sensor is attached to the human chest, the cardiac mechanical activity will induce a local strain in the active piezoelectric materials layer. This strain is converted to an electrical output voltage which is then collected and transmitted through the Bluetooth system. Piezoelectric theory and signal processing methods are …

Topology Optimization Using Load Path And Homogenization, Kaveh Gharibi Nov 2018

Topology Optimization Using Load Path And Homogenization, Kaveh Gharibi

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

In this work, the connection between topology optimization and load transfer has been established. New methods for determining load paths in two dimensional structures, plates and shells are introduced. In the two-dimensional space, there are two load paths with their total derivative equal to the transferred load, their partial derivatives related to stress tensor, and satisfying equilibrium. In the presence of a body load the stress tensor can be decomposed into solenoidal and irrotational fields using Gurtin or Helmholtz decomposition. The load path is calculated using the solenoidal field. A novel method for topology optimization using load paths and total …

Human operators play a key role in the reliable operation of critical infrastructures. However, human operators may take actions that are far from optimum. This can be due to various factors affecting the operators' performance in time-sensitive and critical situations such as reacting to contingencies with significant monetary and social impacts. In this paper, an analytic framework is proposed based on Markov chains for modeling the dynamics of cascading failures in power grids. The model captures the effects of operators' behavior quantified by the probability of human error under various circumstances. In particular, the observations from historical data and information …

Sorption Of Benzene, Toluene And Ethylbenzene By Plasticized Poly (Ethyl Methacrylate) Using Quartz Crystal Microbalance At 298.15k, Kiranpreet Kaur Nov 2018

Sorption Of Benzene, Toluene And Ethylbenzene By Plasticized Poly (Ethyl Methacrylate) Using Quartz Crystal Microbalance At 298.15k, Kiranpreet Kaur

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quartz crystal microbalances (QCM) are chemical sensors used for liquid and vapor sensing. In this thesis work, plasticized poly (ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) coated QCM was used to study sorption behavior of benzene, ethylbenzene and toluene in respective polymer at 298.15K. Poly (ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) is a promising polymer with solubility parameter close to BTEX compounds, but it's glassy and rigid nature at room temperature make it less sensitive. The addition of plasticizers (Diisononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH) and Diisooctyl azelate (DIOA)) lowers the glass transition temperature, provides flexibility and thus increases the free volume of the polymer to enhance analyte sorption. In …

An Interpretable Neural Fuzzy Inference System For Predictions Of Underpricing In Initial Public Offerings, Di Wang, Xiaolin Qian, Chai Quek, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao, Xiaofeng Zhang, Geok See Ng, You Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to their aptitude in both accurate data processing and human comprehensible reasoning, neural fuzzy inference systems have been widely adopted in various application domains as decision support systems. Especially in real-world scenarios such as decision making in financial transactions, the human experts may be more interested in knowing the comprehensive reasons of certain advices provided by a decision support system in addition to how confident the system is on such advices. In this paper, we apply an integrated autonomous computational model termed genetic algorithm and rough set incorporated neural fuzzy inference system (GARSINFIS) to predict underpricing in initial public …

Why We Do Not Evolve Software? Analysis Of Evolutionary Algorithms, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In this article, we review the state-of-the-art results in evolutionary computation and observe that we do not evolve nontrivial software from scratch and with no human intervention. A number of possible explanations are considered, but we conclude that computational complexity of the problem prevents it from being solved as currently attempted. A detailed analysis of necessary and available computational resources is provided to support our findings.

Erosion Rate Equations For Coarse- Grained Materials Using A Small Flume Testing, Ghada Ellithy, Johannes L. Wibowo, Maureen K. Corcoran

Publications

Erosion rate of soils during a levee or dam overtopping event is a major component in risk assessment evaluation of breach time and consequently in determining the downstream consequences. There is uncertainty in estimation of the erosion rate especially for coarsegrained materials that comprise the outer shell layer of dams as well as homogenous levees that are constructed of such materials. In this paper, erosion rate results are presented on three soil mixes that share the same median grain size D50 of 2 mm, the fines content varies between zero and 20%, and the gravel content between zero and 30%. …

Vortex Structures Inside Spherical Mesoscopic Superconductor Plus Magnetic Dipole, A. Ludu Nov 2018

Vortex Structures Inside Spherical Mesoscopic Superconductor Plus Magnetic Dipole, A. Ludu

Publications

We investigate the existence of multivortex states in a superconducting mesoscopic sphere with a magnetic dipole placed at the center. We obtain analytic solutions for the order parameter inside the sphere through the linearized Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model, coupled with mixed boundary conditions, and under regularity conditions and decoupling coordinates approximation. The solutions of the linear GL equation are obtained in terms of Heun double confluent functions, in dipole coordinates symmetry. The analyticity of the solutions and the associated eigenproblem are discussed thoroughly. We minimize the free energy for the fully nonlinear GL system by using linear combinations of linear analytic …

Field Oriented Sliding Mode Control Of Surface-Mounted Permanent Magnet Ac Motors: Theory And Applications To Electrified Vehicles, Xin Wang, Max Reitz, Edwin E. Yaz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Permanent magnet ac motors have been extensively utilized for adjustable-speed traction motor drives, due to their inherent advantages including higher power density, superior efficiency and reliability, more precise and rapid torque control, larger power factor, longer bearing, and insulation life-time. Without any proportional-and-integral (PI) controllers, this paper introduces novel first- and higher-order field-oriented sliding mode control schemes. Compared with the traditional PI-based vector control techniques, it is shown that the proposed field oriented sliding mode control methods improve the dynamic torque and speed response, and enhance the robustness to parameter variations, modeling uncertainties, and external load perturbations. While both first- …

Experimental And Numerical Study Of Evaporation From Wavy Surfaces By Coupling Free Flow And Porous Media Flow, Bo Gao, Hossein Davarzani, Rainer Helmig, Kathleen M. Smits

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

The macroscale roughness of the soil surface has significant influences on the mass/energy interactions between the subsurface and the atmosphere during evaporation. However, most previous works only consider evaporation behavior from flat surfaces. Based on experimental and numerical approaches, the goal of this work is to provide a framework for the understanding of the mechanisms of evaporation from irregular soil surfaces at representative elementary volume scale. A coupling free flow-porous media flow model was developed to describe evaporation under nonisothermal conditions. For simplicity, sinusoidal-type wavy surfaces were considered. To validate this modeling approach, an experiment using an open-ended wind tunnel …

Target Localization And Tracking By Fusing Doppler Differentials From Cellular Emanations With A Multi-Spectral Video Tracker, Casey D. Demars, Michael Roggemann, Adam Webb, Timothy C. Havens Oct 2018

Target Localization And Tracking By Fusing Doppler Differentials From Cellular Emanations With A Multi-Spectral Video Tracker, Casey D. Demars, Michael Roggemann, Adam Webb, Timothy C. Havens

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

We present an algorithm for fusing data from a constellation of RF sensors detecting cellular emanations with the output of a multi-spectral video tracker to localize and track a target with a specific cell phone. The RF sensors measure the Doppler shift caused by the moving cellular emanation and then Doppler differentials between all sensor pairs are calculated. The multi-spectral video tracker uses a Gaussian mixture model to detect foreground targets and SIFT features to track targets through the video sequence. The data is fused by associating the Doppler differential from the RF sensors with the theoretical Doppler differential computed …

Invasion Of The P Elements: Tolerance Is Not Futile, Colin D. Meiklejohn, Justin P. Blumenstiel Oct 2018

Invasion Of The P Elements: Tolerance Is Not Futile, Colin D. Meiklejohn, Justin P. Blumenstiel

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Organisms are locked in an eternal struggle with parasitic DNA sequences that live inside their genomes and wreak havoc on their host’s chromosomes as they spread through populations. To combat these parasites, host species have evolved elaborate mechanisms of resistance that suppress their activity. A new study in Drosophila indicates that, prior to the acquisition of resistance, individuals can vary in their ability to tolerate the activity of these genomic parasites, ignoring or repairing the damage they induce. This tolerance results from variation at genes involved in germline development and DNA damage checkpoints and suggests that these highly conserved cellular …

Analysis Of Particle Behavior Inside The Classifier Of A Raymond Bowl Mill While Co-Milling Woody Biomass With Coal, Seyedhassan Fakourian, Andrew R. Fry, Tanner Jasperson Oct 2018

Analysis Of Particle Behavior Inside The Classifier Of A Raymond Bowl Mill While Co-Milling Woody Biomass With Coal, Seyedhassan Fakourian, Andrew R. Fry, Tanner Jasperson

Faculty Publications

Woody biomass cofiring with coal at existing pulverized-coal boilers is known to be a green energy source and is a low-expense alternative for pure coal combustion. Co-milling woody biomass particles (15 wt%) with coal particles (85 wt%) before burning at a boiler is a complex problem because large woody biomass particles (>300 μm) exit the milling system along with the fine particles. A Computational Particle Fluid Dynamics (CPFD) is used in this paper to present a novel analysis about the behavior of woody biomass particles as they are mixed with coal particles inside the classifier. To meet this …

Exploring The Role Of Nanoparticles In Enhancing Mechanical Properties Of Hydrogel Nanocomposites, Josergio Zaragoza, Scott Fukuoka, Marcus Kraus, James Thomin, Prashanth Asuri

Bioengineering

Over the past few decades, research studies have established that the mechanical properties of hydrogels can be largely impacted by the addition of nanoparticles. However, the exact mechanisms behind such enhancements are not yet fully understood. To further explore the role of nanoparticles on the enhanced mechanical properties of hydrogel nanocomposites, we used chemically crosslinked polyacrylamide hydrogels incorporating silica nanoparticles as the model system. Rheological measurements indicate that nanoparticle-mediated increases in hydrogel elastic modulus can exceed the maximum modulus that can be obtained through purely chemical crosslinking. Moreover, the data reveal that nanoparticle, monomer, and chemical crosslinker concentrations can all …

Fungi: A Neglected Candidate For The Application Of Self-Healing Concrete, Congrui Jin, Rui Yu, Zhonghe Shui

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Self-healing mechanism in concrete has been so far achieved mainly by three approaches: autogenous healing, encapsulation of polymeric material, and biologically induced mineralization of calcium carbonate. The microbial approach prevails over the other two approaches due to the high compatibility between the filler material and the concrete compositions. Although the term “microbe” refers to many different types of organisms, research work on self-healing concrete has been so far restricted to bacteria. In this perspective article, we review the current status of bacteria-mediated self-healing concrete and summarize the prospects for future advances. In particular, we point out that fungi may have …

A Review On Bioconversion Of Agro-Industrial Wastes To Industrially Important Enzymes, Rajeev Ravindran, Shady S. Hassan, Gwilym A. Williams, Amit K, Jaiswal

Articles

Agro-industrial waste is highly nutritious in nature and facilitates microbial growth. Most agricultural wastes are lignocellulosic in nature; a large fraction of it is composed of carbohydrates. Agricultural residues can thus be used for the production of various value-added products, such as industrially important enzymes. Agro-industrial wastes, such as sugar cane bagasse, corn cob and rice bran, have been widely investigated via different fermentation strategies for the production of enzymes. Solid-state fermentation holds much potential compared with submerged fermentation methods for the utilization of agro-based wastes for enzyme production. This is because the physical–chemical nature of many lignocellulosic substrates naturally …

Phonon Signature Of Charge Inhomogeneity In High Temperature Superconductors Yba2cu3o6+X, Y. Petrov, T. Egami, R. J. Mcqueeney, Mohana Yethiraj, Herbert A. Mook

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Temperature and composition dependences of high-energy longitudinal optical (LO) phonons in YBa2Cu3O6+x, studied by inelastic neutron scattering measurements, provide clear evidence for temperature dependent spatial inhomogeneity of doped charges. The measurements indicate that charge doping increases the volume fraction of the charged regions, while the local charge density remains unchanged. For the optimally doped sample the charge distribution changes sharply near the superconducting transition temperature, with stronger charge inhomogeneity below TC. The remarkable magnitude of the phonon response to charge suggests strong involvement of phonons in charge dynamics.
