Real-Time Sensing Of Trust In Human-Machine Interactions, Wan-Lin Hu, Kumar Akash, Neera Jain, Tahira Reid Jan 2017

Real-Time Sensing Of Trust In Human-Machine Interactions, Wan-Lin Hu, Kumar Akash, Neera Jain, Tahira Reid

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Human trust in automation plays an important role in successful interactions between humans and machines. To design intelligent machines that can respond to changes in human trust, real-time sensing of trust level is needed. In this paper, we describe an empirical trust sensor model that maps psychophysiological measurements to human trust level. The use of psychophysiological measurements is motivated by their ability to capture a human's response in real time. An exhaustive feature set is considered, and a rigorous statistical approach is used to determine a reduced set of ten features. Multiple classification methods are considered for mapping the reduced …

Identifying Two Regimes Of Slip Of Simple Fluids Over Smooth Surfaces With Weak And Strong Wall-Fluid Interaction Energies, Haibao Hu, Luyao Bao, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Kai Luo Jan 2017

Identifying Two Regimes Of Slip Of Simple Fluids Over Smooth Surfaces With Weak And Strong Wall-Fluid Interaction Energies, Haibao Hu, Luyao Bao, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Kai Luo

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The slip behavior of simple fluids over atomically smooth surfaces was investigated in a wide range of wall-fluid interaction (WFI) energies at low shear rates using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The relationship between slip and WFI shows two regimes (the strong-WFI and weak-WFI regimes): as WFI decreases, the slip length increases in the strong-WFI regime and decreases in the weak-WFI regime. The critical value of WFI energy that separates these regimes increases with temperature, but it remains unaffected by the driving force. The mechanism of slip was analyzed by examining the density-weighted average energy barrier (∆E) encountered by fluid atoms …

Automatic Analysis Of Surface Electromyography Of Reflexes For Central Nervous System Inhibition During Pregnancy, Neda Parvin Jan 2017

Automatic Analysis Of Surface Electromyography Of Reflexes For Central Nervous System Inhibition During Pregnancy, Neda Parvin

Theses and Dissertations

Eclampsia is a life-threatening neurological complication (seizures or coma) of pregnancy, and represents progression of pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure and protein in the urine isolated to pregnancy). Even though the exact mechanism of pre-eclampsia and its neurological manifestations have yet to be definitively established, it is known that there is a loss of inhibitory impulses between the cerebral cortex and the spinal cord resulting in exaggerated reflexes. In this work, we establish normative measures for deep tendon reflexes (DTR) during pregnancy. We quantified the surface electromyogram (EMG) at the knee and ankle of DTRs in 279 subjects. The signals were …

15-07 App-Based Crowd Sourcing Of Bicycle And Pedestrian Conflict Data, Stephen Mattingly, Colleen Casey, Taylor Johnson Jan 2017

15-07 App-Based Crowd Sourcing Of Bicycle And Pedestrian Conflict Data, Stephen Mattingly, Colleen Casey, Taylor Johnson

Transportation Research Center Reports

Most agencies and decision-makers rely on crash and crash severity (property damage only, injury or fatality) data to assess transportation safety; however, in the context of public health where perceptions of safety may influence the willingness to adopt active transportation modes (e.g. bicycling and walking), pedestrian-vehicle and other similar conflicts may represent a better performance measure for safety assessment. For transportation safety, a clear conflict occurs when two parties’ paths cross and one of the parties must undertake an evasive maneuver (e.g. change direction or stop) to avoid a crash. Other less severe conflicts where paths cross but no evasive …

Fatigue Properties And Damage Mechanism Of A Cr-Mn Austenite Steel, Z. Q. Lv, Pei Cai, T. Yu, Yan Jin, H. F. Zhang, Tongguang Zhai, W. T. Fu

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The fatigue properties and the damage mechanism of a Cr-Mn austenite steel were investigated using four-point bend fatigue testing. The stress-number of cycles to failure (S-N) curve of the Cr-Mn austenite steel was measured at room temperature, at the frequency of f=20 Hz and the stress ratio of R=0.1. The fatigue strength of this Cr-Mn austenite steel was measured to be 503 MPa in the maximum stress. Multiple cracks are initiated on the sample surface after fatigue failure tests, and usually only one or two of them can lead to the final failure of the samples. Most of the cracks …

Avoiding Bus Bunching: From Theory To Practice, Ricardo Giesen Jan 2017

Avoiding Bus Bunching: From Theory To Practice, Ricardo Giesen

PSU Transportation Seminars

The problem of bus bunching in a high frequency service has been largely studied in the literature.

This phenomenon is produced by three main factors

(i) the variability in travel time between stops; (ii) variations in passenger demand; and (iii) drivers’ heterogeneity.

In order to tackle this phenomenon a wide range of control strategies have been proposed, however, none of them had been successfully implemented on a large transit network with high frequency services.

In this talk, we present a control scheme based on a rolling horizon optimization problem that has been successfully implemented for real-time control of two high …

A Well Clear Recommendation For Small Uas In High-Density, Ads-B-Enabled Airspace, Timothy Mclain, Matthew O. Duffield

Faculty Publications

With the growing popularity of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), there is a significant need to enable small UAS to detect and avoid collisions with both manned and unmanned aircraft. The capabilities of ADS-B make it an attractive sensor for detect and avoid (DAA), but it is susceptible to frequency congestion. This paper quantitatively analyzes the frequency limitations of 978 MHz ADS-B. It then uses these limitations to make a recommendation for well clear in ADS-B-equipped airspace that has a high density of small UAS operations.

Hyperbolic Metamaterials-Based Plasmonic Biosensor For Fluid Biopsy With Single Molecule Sensitivity, Kandammathe Valiyaveedu Sreekanth, Mohamed Elkabbash, Yunus Alapan, Efe Ilker Ilker, Michael Hinczewski, Umut A. Gurkan, Giuseppe Strangi

Faculty Scholarship

Plasmonic sensors are one of the most powerful optical biosensors, which can be used for the detection of small numbers of molecules at ultra-low concentrations. However, the detection of dilute analytes of low molecular weight (Da) is still a challenging task using currently available plasmonic biosensors. Here, we demonstrate the detection of both lower and heavier molecular weight biomolecules close to single molecule level using a novel plasmonic biosensor platform based on hyperbolic metamaterials. We show experimentally the extraordinary spectral and angular sensitivities of the biosensor platform, from visible to near infrared (NIR) wavelengths, by exciting the bulk plasmon polaritons …

Effect Of Liquid Contamination On Hermeticity And Seal Strength Of Flexible Pouches With Lldpe, Francesca Delle Cese, Koushik Saha, S. Roy, Jay Singh

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Flexible packaging is a growing successful market and the majority of flexible package applications are for the food industry. The demand for process optimization and reduced production costs, has led to an increase in flexible packaging. However, fast production lines can result in contamination in the seal area. For flexible food packaging, contamination is considered any food particle or substance trapped in the seal area. Current quality control processes can detect contamination in the seal area, but it is not determined if seal contamination affects seal quality. Oil-based and sodium based snack foods are two common categories that can be …

The Effect Of Creasing Lines On The Compression Strength Of Adjustable Height Corrugated Boxes, Péter Csavajda, Péter Böröcz, Ákos Mojzes, Bence Molnár

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Due to its high strength and low density, the corrugated fibreboard (CFB) box is one of the most popular types of packaging all over the world. This packaging device is able to fulfil a huge number of requirements of the logistic process, during the phases of handling, shipping and storage. In addition to this, corrugated packaging is easily machinable, so it is also suitable for special supply chains and products. These special needs include the requirement to fit to the inner measurements of the shipping device, e.g. the shipping container. This is particularly expected in case of less than container-load …

Adding A Polymer Film Barrier Layer In The Press Forming Process Of Paperboard Trays, Ville Leminen, Panu Tanninen, Mika Kainusalmi, Kirubel Bogale, Juha Varis

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The aim of this paper was to investigate the possibility to add a barrier layer in the press forming phase of paperboard trays by sealing a polymer film to a paperboard substrate. Plastic coating is often an important part of packages manufactured for food packaging. Traditionally the paperboards for food packaging are coated in the paper mill before the actual forming of the package. Experiments with coated and uncoated boards were made and the bonding and adhesion of materials was observed. The results indicate that adhesion between the board and the film can be achieved in the forming process. However …

Disciplinary Differences In Out-Of-School High School Science Experiences And Influence On Students’ Engineering Choices, Allison Godwin, Gerhard Sonnert, Philip M. Sadler

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Participation from a variety of students is important to the long-term growth of the engineering field. Much of the research on engineering recruitment or career choice has focused on engineering as a whole, even though engineering disciplines are varied in student participation and focus. This work examines how students’ out-of-school interests and experiences in high school predict the likelihood of choosing a career in a particular engineering discipline. Out-of-school experiences offer more unstructured ways for students to meaningfully engage with science and engineering outside of the confines of the classroom. These experiences offer opportunities to spark particular science interests not …

Effects Of Rejuvenators On High-Rap Mixtures Based On Laboratory Tests Of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures And Fine Aggregate Matrix Mixtures, Hesamaddin Nabizadeh, Hamzeh Haghshenas, Yong-Rak Kim, F. T. S. Aragão Jan 2017

Effects Of Rejuvenators On High-Rap Mixtures Based On Laboratory Tests Of Asphalt Concrete Mixtures And Fine Aggregate Matrix Mixtures, Hesamaddin Nabizadeh, Hamzeh Haghshenas, Yong-Rak Kim, F. T. S. Aragão

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Although the linear viscoelastic stiffness, fracture characteristics, and permanent deformation behavior of AC mixtures can be determined through experiments, it is generally time-consuming and expensive to reach statistically repeatable results. Thus, it is attractive to pursue alternative methods that are cheaper, faster, and repeatable in order to efficiently evaluate and predict asphalt mixtures’ core mechanical characteristics (such as stiffness, fatigue, and plastic deformation).

Chemical–Rheological Evaluation Of The Short-Term And Long-Term Effectiveness Of Binder Rejuvenators, H. F. Haghshenas, S. Kommidi, D. Nguyen, Yong-Rak Kim

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Many previous studies have investigated how rejuvenators affect/alter mechanical/chemical characteristics of aged binders. However, it has not been actively examined how the rejuvenated binders will perform for the next round of service after the rejuvenation was made. A better understanding of the short-term and long-term effect of rejuvenating agents in RAP blended asphalt mixtures is necessary to achieve more appropriate selection and use of rejuvenating agents.

The Irreversible Momentum Of Clean Energy, Barack Obama Jan 2017

The Irreversible Momentum Of Clean Energy, Barack Obama

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The release of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) due to human activity is increasing global average surface air temperatures, disrupting weather patterns, and acidifying the ocean. Left unchecked, the continued growth of GHG emissions could cause global average temperatures to increase by another 4°C or more by 2100 and by 1.5 to 2 times as much in many midcontinent and far northern locations. Although our understanding of the impacts of climate change is increasingly and disturbingly clear, there is still debate about the proper course for U.S. policy—a debate that is very much on display …

Development Of Earthquake Vulnerability Functions And Risk Curves For Low And Mid-Rise Hotel Buildings Using A Performance-Based Loss Estimation Framework, Amir Safiey, Weichiang Pang, Mohammad Javanbarg, Keivan Rokneddin, Ershad Ziaei

Publications

The concept of performance-based earthquake engineering has gained significant attentions in both the research and engineering communities. The development of a performance-based seismic loss assessment framework, known as the FEMA P-58 method, allows one to estimate the potential financial losses of a building using performance-based engineering method. This research employs a seismic loss estimation framework derived using the P-58 method to estimate the monetary loss of a mid-rise wood-frame hotel building which is assumed to be located in Napa Valley, California. A 3D structural model representative of the dynamic behavior of the wood-frame hotel was created and subjected to Incremental …

Analytical Content Vulnerability Assessment Methodology For Earthquake Catastrophe Models, Keivan Rokneddin, Amir Safiey, Mohammad Javanbarg, Vijay Manghnani, Weichiang Pang

Publications

The scarcity of detailed claims data for building contents (Coverage C) from historical earthquake events poses a significant challenge for property insurance catastrophe models to reliably estimate the losses associated to building contents. To develop content vulnerability functions empirically, one would need to have access to data from a multitude of historical events; however, loss disaggregation by coverage is rarely reported even when claims data become available from recent significant events such as Maule (2010) and Tohoku (2011). While damage to the building structure (Coverage A) can be estimated analytically using simulation-based fragility functions to amend sparse historical observations, the …

Estimating Airport Operations At General Aviation Airports Using The Faa Npias Airport Categories, Mary E. Johnson, Yue Gu Jan 2017

Estimating Airport Operations At General Aviation Airports Using The Faa Npias Airport Categories, Mary E. Johnson, Yue Gu

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The number of annual aircraft operations (take-offs and landings) is a significant concern to both airport owners and operators and to governmental agencies because operations data are one of the most important criteria used for determining future investments in airports. However, estimating the number of aircraft operations at non-towered general aviation airports is challenging work due to the lack of counts from air traffic control towers or useful estimates developed using models. Previous work in estimating annual aircraft operations has resulted in models and sampling methods that are imprecise or difficult to use. In 2014, new classification categories of 2,939 …

Assessing Dprestin & Nadc1 (Indy) Interaction On Calcium Oxalate Crystal Formation In A Drosophila Model Of Kidney Stones, Jessica Lin Jan 2017

Assessing Dprestin & Nadc1 (Indy) Interaction On Calcium Oxalate Crystal Formation In A Drosophila Model Of Kidney Stones, Jessica Lin

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Calcium oxalate (CaOx) accounts for >70%of kidney stones, yet why CaOx stones form is poorly understood. While several factors contribute to the stone aggregation and growth, elucidating the roles of oxalate transporters can help demystify this phenomenon. Using a Drosophila model to study the formation and inhibition of CaOx crystals in the fly Malpighian tubule (MT), oxalate transport via dPrestin—the fly Slc26a6 Cl-/Ox2- exchanger was studied using both electrophysiology and MT dissection with CaOx birefringence assays. Here, the fly model suffices as it recapitulates renal oxalate excretion. Additionally, the mammalian dicarboxylate transporter NaDC1 (Indy in Drosophila) …

Interplay Of Composition, Structure, And Electron Density Of States In W-Os Cathode Materials And Relationship With Thermionic Emission, Qunfei Zhou, Thomas John Balk, Matthew J. Beck

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The presence and composition of W-Os alloys have been found to significantly affect the thermionic emission properties of Os-coated tungsten dispenser cathodes. However, the comprehensive understanding of structure–property relationships needed to design improved tungsten cathodes with larger thermionic emission is still lacking. In this study, composition–structure–property relationships governing thermionic emission from W-Os alloys were investigated using quantum mechanical calculations. Low-energy W-Os atomic configurations at various compositions were determined from first-principles calculations based on density functional theory in combination with cluster expansion calculations. Electronic properties were investigated in terms of the electron density of states. The relative position of the Fermi …
