Contemporary And Future Characteristics Of Precipitation Indices In The Kentucky River Basin, Somsubhra Chattopadhyay, Dwayne R. Edwards, Yao Yu

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Climatic variability can lead to large-scale alterations in the hydrologic cycle, some of which can be characterized in terms of indices involving precipitation depth, duration and frequency. This study evaluated the spatiotemporal behavior of precipitation indices over the Kentucky River watershed for both the baseline period of 1986–2015 and late-century time frame of 2070–2099. Historical precipitation data were collected from 16 weather stations in the watershed, while future rainfall time-series were obtained from an ensemble of 10 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) global circulation models under two future emission pathways: Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5. Annual …

PRELUDE

On June 26, 2012 a lightning strike ignited a wildfire in the Manti-La Sal National Forest of central Utah’s Carbon and Emery counties (Figure P.1). By the time the Seeley wildfire was contained three weeks later, some 48,000 acres of federal, state, and private land had been burned and $8.7 million in suppression costs expended (Styler 2012). According to the Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS.gov) project, nearly one-third of the acreage was severely burned, damaging vegetation and soils for years to come. Severe burns vastly increase the erosion potential of burnt landscapes, and the steep lands of Huntington …

Emergence Of Home Manufacturing In The Developed World: Return On Investment For Open-Source 3-D Printers., Emily E. Petersen, Joshua M. Pearce

Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications

Through reduced 3-D printer cost, increased usability, and greater material selection, additive manufacturing has transitioned from business manufacturing to the average prosumer. This study serves as a representative model for the potential future of 3-D printing in the average American household by employing a printer operator who was relatively unfamiliar with 3-D printing and the 3-D design files of common items normally purchased by the average consumer. Twenty-six items were printed in thermoplastic and a cost analysis was performed through comparison to comparable, commercially available products at a low and high price range. When compared to the low-cost items, investment …

Alternative Cdep Design To Facilitate Cell Isolation For Identification By Raman Spectroscopy, Cynthia Hanson, Elizabeth Vargis Feb 2017

Alternative Cdep Design To Facilitate Cell Isolation For Identification By Raman Spectroscopy, Cynthia Hanson, Elizabeth Vargis

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) uses non-uniform electric fields to cause motion in particles due to the particles' intrinsic properties. As such, DEP is a well-suited label-free means for cell sorting. Of the various methods of implementing DEP, contactless dielectrophoresis (cDEP) is advantageous as it avoids common problems associated with DEP, such as electrode fouling and electrolysis. Unfortunately, cDEP devices can be difficult to fabricate, replicate, and reuse. In addition, the operating parameters are limited by the dielectric breakdown of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This study presents an alternative way to fabricate a cDEP device allowing for higher operating voltages, improved replication, and the opportunity …

A Low Assembly Cost Coaxial Magnetic Gearbox, Kiran Uppalapati, Joshua Kadel, Jason Wright, Kang Li, Wesley Williams, Jonathan Bird

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents the design investigation and experimental testing of a flux-focusing magnetic gearbox with a three piece laminated rotor structure. Each rotor is made of a single lamination stack held together via thin lamination bridges. It is calculated that mechanical bridges reduces the torque density from 156Nm/L to 139Nm/L (a reduction of 11%). The experimentally measured torque density is shown to be only 95Nm/L because the magnets were demagnetized during testing.

Adhesion Evaluation Of Asphalt-Aggregate Interface Using Surface Free Energy Method, Jie Ji, Hui Yao, Luhou Liu, Zhi Suo, Peng Zhai, Xu Yang, Zhanping You

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The influence of organic additives (Sasobit and RH) and water on the adhesion of the asphalt-aggregate interface was studied according to the surface free energy theory. Two asphalt binders (SK-70 and SK-90), and two aggregate types (limestone and basalt) were used in this study. The sessile drop method was employed to test surface free energy components of asphalt, organic additives and aggregates. The adhesion models of the asphalt-aggregate interface in dry and wet conditions were established, and the adhesion work was calculated subsequently. The energy ratios were built to evaluate the effect of organic additives and water on the adhesiveness …

Examination Of The Effect Of Differential Molecular Diffusion In Dns Of Turbulent Non-Premixed Flames, Chao Han, David O. Lignell, Evatt R. Hawkes, Jacqueline H. Chen, Haifeng Wang

Faculty Publications

The effect of differential molecular diffusion (DMD) in turbulent non-premixed flames is studied by examining two previously reported DNS of temporally evolving planar jet flames, one with CO/H2 as the fuel and the other with C2H4 as the fuel. The effect of DMD in the CO/H2 DNS flames in which H2 is part of fuel is found to behave similar to laminar flamelet, while in the C2H4 DNS flames in which H2 is not present in the fuel it is similar to laminar flamelet in early stages but becomes different from laminar flamelet later. The scaling of the effect …

Collective Nonaffine Displacements In Amorphous Materials During Large-Amplitude Oscillatory Shear, Nikolai V. Priezjev Feb 2017

Collective Nonaffine Displacements In Amorphous Materials During Large-Amplitude Oscillatory Shear, Nikolai V. Priezjev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the transient response of a binary Lennard-Jones glass subjected to periodic shear deformation. The amorphous solid is modelled as the three-dimensional Kob-Andersen binary mixture at a low temperature. The cyclic loading is applied to slowly annealed, quiescent samples, which induces irreversible particle rearrangements at large strain amplitudes, leading to stress-strain hysteresis and a drift of the potential energy towards higher values. We find that the initial response to cyclic shear near the critical strain amplitude involves disconnected clusters of atoms with large nonaffine displacements. In contrast, the amplitude of shear stress oscillations decreases after …

Remediating 1,4-Dioxane-Contaminated Water With Slow-Release Persulfate And Zerovalent Iron, Ann Kambhu, Megan Gren, Wei Tang, Steve D. Comfort, Clifford Harris Feb 2017

Remediating 1,4-Dioxane-Contaminated Water With Slow-Release Persulfate And Zerovalent Iron, Ann Kambhu, Megan Gren, Wei Tang, Steve D. Comfort, Clifford Harris

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

1,4-dioxane is an emerging contaminant that was used as a corrosion inhibitor with chlorinated solvents. Metal-activated persulfate can degrade dioxane but reaction kinetics have typically been characterized by a rapid decrease during the first 30 min followed by either a slower decrease or no further change (i.e., plateau). Our objective was to identify the factors responsible for this plateau and then determine if slow-release formulations of sodium persulfate and Fe0 could provide a more sustainable degradation treatment. We accomplished this by conducting batch experiments where Fe0-activated persulfate was used to treat dioxane. Treatment variables included the timing …

A Vertical Axis Wave Turbine With Hydrofoil Blades, Yingchen Yang, Isaiah Diaz, Sergio Soto Quintero Feb 2017

A Vertical Axis Wave Turbine With Hydrofoil Blades, Yingchen Yang, Isaiah Diaz, Sergio Soto Quintero

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This work discusses a new wave energy converter (WEC) design that, when deployed in waves, performs unidirectional rotation about a vertical shaft. The uniqueness of this new WEC design is on utilizing omnidirectional water flow generated by waves to drive a rotor to perform unidirectional rotation about a vertical axis. This unique feature circumvents the frequency-dependent issue of common WECs, and eliminate realignment needs to cope with dynamically changing wave propagation directions. The key component of the WEC is a rotor, which has a vertical shaft with a number of blades mounted to it. Each blade has a hydrofoil-shaped cross …

Comparative Performance Of Two Ventilation Strategies In A Hot-Humid Climate, Florida Solar Energy Center, Sarah Widder Feb 2017

Comparative Performance Of Two Ventilation Strategies In A Hot-Humid Climate, Florida Solar Energy Center, Sarah Widder

FSEC Energy Research Center®

ASHRAE Standard 62.2, 'Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Buildings,' is the most commonly referenced residential ventilation standard in the United States. It is currently required by ENERGY STAR Version 3 (V3), the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code, the U.S. Department of Energy's Zero Energy Ready Home Program, many state weatherization programs, and many other home performance programs. The standard calls for ventilation levels that are perceived by some builders and contractors to cause indoor moisture issues in hot-humid climates unless mitigated by supplemental dehumidification systems, which increase overall energy consumption. Therefore, many high-performance home builders in a hot-humid …

A Fault-Tolerant T-Type Multilevel Inverter Topology With Increased Overload Capability And Soft-Switching Characteristics, Jiangbiao He, Ramin Katebi, Nathan Weise, Nabeel Demerdash, Lixiang Wei

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

he performance of a novel three-phase four-leg fault-tolerant T-type inverter topology is introduced in this paper. This inverter topology provides a fault-tolerant solution to any open-circuit and certain short-circuit switching faults in the power devices. During any of the fault-tolerant operation modes for these device faults, there is no derating required in the inverter output voltage or output power. In addition, overload capability is increased in this new T-type inverter compared to that in the conventional three-level T-type inverter. Such increase in inverter overload capability is due to the utilization of the redundant leg for overload current sharing with other …

Fast And Efficient Radio Resource Allocation In Dynamic Ultra-Dense Heterogeneous Networks, Chonggyu Niu, Yibing Li, Rose Qingyang Hu, Fang Ye

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Ultra-dense network (UDN) is considered as a promising technology in 5G wireless networks. In an UDN network, dynamic traffic patterns can lead to a high computational complexity and an excessive communications overhead with traditional resource allocation schemes. In this paper, a new resource allocation scheme presenting a low computational overhead and a low subband handoff rate in a dynamic ultra-dense heterogeneous network is presented. The scheme first defines a new interference estimation method that constructs network interference state map, based on which a radio resource allocation scheme is proposed. The resource allocation problem is a MAX-K cut problem and can …

In this paper, we consider collaborative power systems education through the FEEDER consortium. To increase students' access to power engineering educational content, the consortium of seven universities was formed. A framework is presented to characterize different collaborative education activities among the universities. Three of these approaches of collaborative educational activities are presented and discussed. These include 1) cross-institutional blended courses (“MS-MD”); 2) cross-institutional distance courses (“SS-MD”); and 3) single-site special experiential courses and concentrated on-site programs available to students across consortium institutions (“MS-SD”). This paper presents the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Since the fall of 2004, the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) has been providing global monitoring of volcanic SO2 emissions, helping to understand their climate impacts and to mitigate aviation hazards. Here we introduce a new-generation OMI volcanic SO2 dataset based on a principal component analysis (PCA) retrieval technique. To reduce retrieval noise and artifacts as seen in the current operational linear fit (LF) algorithm, the new algorithm, OMSO2VOLCANO, uses characteristic features extracted directly from OMI radiances in the spectral fitting, thereby helping to minimize interferences from various geophysical processes (e.g., O3 absorption) and measurement details (e.g., wavelength shift). To solve …

Bioengineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Simultaneous imaging of multiple targets (SIMT) in opaque biological tissues is an important goal for molecular imaging in the future. Multi-color fluorescence imaging in deep tissues is a promising technology to reach this goal. In this work, we developed a dual-modality imaging system by combining our recently developed ultrasound-switchable fluorescence (USF) imaging technology with the conventional ultrasound (US) B-mode imaging. This dual-modality system can simultaneously image tissue acoustic structure information and multi-color fluorophores in centimeter-deep tissue with comparable spatial resolutions. To conduct USF imaging on the same plane (i.e., x-z plane) as US imaging, we adopted two 90 -crossed ultrasound …
