Development Of Cone Testing Device For Improved Deep Foundation Design Protocols, Hai Minh Nguyen
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
A novel cone penetration test device, the P-cone, has been developed to assist in deep foundation design and this P-cone device combines features of CPTU cone sounding technologies with capabilities to perform bidirectional loading at a given soil depth condition. Using two independent systems, the P cone measures shear stress versus movements of cone shaft and stress versus penetration of the cone tip at desired depths. The P-cone can also improve the penetration depth and offer a potential application for the in situ consolidation test. Laboratory experiments of the P-cone device were successful beyond the expectation. P-cone Tests performed on …

Genetic Editing Out The Tumor Growth Supressor Gene Trm9l In Colorectal Cancer Models Using Crispr-Cas9, Philip Blatner
Nanoscale Science & Engineering (discontinued with class year 2014)
Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) is a precise genetic engineering tool for genome editing. CRISPR utilizes guide RNA (gRNA) to find specific DNA sequences followed by a Cas9 nuclease to cut the DNA at a specific site. TRM9L is a tumor growth-suppresser gene that restricts the growth of some colorectal cancer cells by upregulating LIN9 expression. TRM9L expression is lost in some late stage colorectal cancers and cancer models (SW620). SW480 colorectal cancer cells express TRM9L and these cells are considered to be at the beginning of colorectal cancer development. The goal of my project was to use …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A case-comparative mixed methods approach was used to discover how faculty members’ teaching perspectives changed as they adopted an eportfolio tool (Pathbrite). Ten faculty members took the Teaching Perspectives Inventory (TPI) before and after using the tool during Fall semester 2015. Also, systems logs were collected and interviews were conducted after the post survey was completed. Interview data found that faculty members developed a broader view of the potential of eportfolios. Participants also appreciated the long-term benefits that eportfolios would have on their students. However, when use was associated with accreditation standards, gains in student-centered perspectives were minimal. The study …

Bioengineering Theses - Archive
During a radical prostatectomy in the operating room, there exists a certain degree of risks of a surgical positive margin of prostate cancer. Positive surgical margins are defined as cancer that has spread beyond the margin of the prostate and into the surrounding tissues. Surgeons will be able to utilized the concept of Light Reflectance Spectroscopy (LRS) in real-time during surgery to help detect these positive surgical margins and to provide the surgeon a quantitative decision to remove the excess surrounding tissues. This modality would essentially lower the risks of positive surgical margins and prevent the recurrence of cancer, effectively …
Production Of Mesophase Pitch From Gasified Lignin-Derived Tars, Adedayo O. Idowu
Production Of Mesophase Pitch From Gasified Lignin-Derived Tars, Adedayo O. Idowu
Theses and Dissertations
Lignin tars are created as a by-product of lignin gasification. Significant effort has gone into minimizing tar production. However, no process has been shown to completely eliminate its formation. As a result, the tar is being used to manufacture low value products such as asphalt, or is being used as a fuel in fixed combustion systems.
The research presented here is part of an effort to increase the viability of using lignocellulosic biomass as a feedstock to produce high value products. We tested the postulate that tars derived from lignin could be processed into a mesophase pitch allowable for conversion …

Detection Of Plant Emergence Based On Spatio Temporal Image Sequence Analysis, Bhushit Agarwal
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The phenome of a plant is the sum of all observable phenotypes for that plant. Phenotypes are observable characteristics or traits of a plant. These traits generally reflect a combination of influences from the genotype of the plant and the environment in which the plant has grown and developed. Collecting phenotypic data has traditionally been a slow and costly manual process, albeit one highly necessary for plant breeding and the development of improved agronomic practices. As a result automated methods for plant phenotyping analysis have become an active research field in recent years. Image-based plant phenotyping analysis facilitates extraction of …

Impact Of Rram Read Fluctuations On The Program-Verify Approach, David M. Nminibapiel, Dmitry Veksler, J.-H. Kim, Pragya R. Shrestha, Jason P. Campbell, Jason T. Ryan, Helmut Baumgart, Kin P. Cheung
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The stochastic nature of the conductive filaments in oxide-based resistive memory (RRAM) represents a sizeable impediment to commercialization. As such, program-verify methodologies are highly alluring. However, it was recently shown that program-verify methods are unworkable due to strong resistance state relaxation after SET/RESET programming. In this paper, we demonstrate that resistance state relaxation is not the main culprit. Instead, it is fluctuation-induced false-reading (triggering) that defeats the program-verify method, producing a large distribution tail immediately after programming. The fluctuation impact on the verify mechanism has serious implications on the overall write/erase speed of RRAM.

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Aluminum multicharged ion generation from femtosecond laser ablation is studied. A Ti:sapphire laser (wavelength 800 nm, pulse width ∼100 fs, and maximum laser fluence of 7.6 J/cm2) is used. Ion yield and energy distribution of each charge state are measured. A linear relationship between the ion charge state and the equivalent acceleration energy of the individual ion species is observed and is attributed to the presence of an electric field within the plasma-vacuum boundary that accelerates the ions. The ion energy distribution follows a shifted Coulomb-Boltzmann distribution. For Al1+ and Al2+, the ion energy distributions …

Optimization Under Uncertainty For Wake Steering Strategies, Julian Quick, Jennifer Annoni, Ryan King, Katherine Dykes, Paul Fleming, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
Wind turbines in a wind power plant experience significant power losses because of aerodynamic interactions between turbines. One control strategy to reduce these losses is known as 'wake steering,' in which upstream turbines are yawed to direct wakes away from downstream turbines. Previous wake steering research has assumed perfect information, however, there can be significant uncertainty in many aspects of the problem, including wind inflow and various turbine measurements. Uncertainty has significant implications for performance of wake steering strategies. Consequently, the authors formulate and solve an optimization under uncertainty (OUU) problem for finding optimal wake steering strategies in the presence …

A Study Of Dislocation Networks In Gasb On Gaas Using Transmission Electron Microscopy, Darryl M. Shima
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
The growth of GaSb on GaAs is of interest for a variety of scientific and technological applications. Some evidence suggests that low threading dislocation density GaSb can be grown directly on GaAs through arrays of periodic edge misfit dislocations. However, significant conflicting data also exist. This work seeks to clarify the question through transmission electron microscopy analysis of GaSb grown on GaAs. The results of this work show that the single strategy of direct growth of GaSb on GaAs results in dislocation densities too high for devices. A secondary strategy of dislocation filtering layers is introduced to further reduce threading …

Chip-Package Interfacial Stress Analysis And Reliability Implications For Flip-Chip Power Devices, Jonathan Gh Treco
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The solder in flip-chip assemblies experience high stress and strain because of thermal mismatch induced deformation. These deformations occur because of the differences of coefficient of thermal expansion between flip-chip assembly materials. The similarly in stress profiles between thermal induced and shear induced stress in solder joints enable the use of die shear testing as a representative technique for relating the max stress the flip-chip can withstand to cyclic thermal fatigue failures. In this work, two electronic device sample preparation types are evaluated: One set of samples are soldered together and other set of samples use epoxy as an adhesive. …
