Find, Build, And Export Information For 3d Printing Of Your Favorite Molecules And Crystal Structures At Two Dedicated Websites, Paul R. Destefano, Peter Moeck
Student Research Symposium
As 3D printers require instructions, the Nano-Crystallography Group at Portland State University is creating two websites (http://nanocrystallography.org/3dconvert/ and http://nanocrystallography.research.pdx.edu/3d-print-files/convert/) where such instructions are created, interactively, for the atomic arrangements of virtually all known molecules and crystals.
We will prepare a "pipeline" into which crystallographic information enters from two curated open access crystallographic databases, is manipulated to create the desired 3D models, and then is exported in either STL format (the standard for monochrome 3D printing) or VRML/X3D (the ISO successor to STL). The two aforementioned databases are the North-American mirror of the Crystallography Open Database (http://nanocrystallography.org) …
Fe Analysis Of Alternative Thermal Breaks For Steel Buildings, Salih Q. Mahmood
Fe Analysis Of Alternative Thermal Breaks For Steel Buildings, Salih Q. Mahmood
Student Research Symposium
“Thermal bridge” is a term used for structural or non-structural elements that have higher heat transfer than any other elements or spots in the building envelope, reducing the efficiency of the building thermal insulation. About 20% of the heat occurs via such thermal bridges. Thermal insulations (thermal breaks) are used within a steel connection to mitigate the effect of thermal bridges. In this research, connections with steel fillers studied by Dusicka (2007) were simulated using the finite element (FE) program ABAQUS. The results from the FE model were validated with those from the experimental work done by Dusicka (2007) and …
Monitoring Of Applied Stress In Concrete Using Ultrasonic Full-Waveform Comparison Techniques, Ali Hafiz
Monitoring Of Applied Stress In Concrete Using Ultrasonic Full-Waveform Comparison Techniques, Ali Hafiz
Student Research Symposium
Ultrasonic testing is a non-destructive approach commonly used to evaluate concrete structures. A challenge with concrete is that it is heterogeneous, which causes multiple wave scattering resulting in longer and more complex wave paths. The recorded ultrasonic waveform can be divided into two portions: the coherent (or early) and the diffuse (or Coda) portion. While conventional methods only use the coherent portion, e.g. the first wave arrival to determine the wave velocity, we are interested in the entire waveform, i.e. until the wave amplitude is completely dampened out. The objective of this study was to determine what portion of the …

Extended Saleh Model For Behavioral Modeling Of Envelope Tracking Power Amplifiers, Haider Al Kanan, Fu Li, Felice Francesco Tafuri
Student Research Symposium
Envelope Tracking (ET) is one of the most deployed efficiency enhancement techniques to improve efficiency of RF Power Amplifiers (PAs) in wireless communication. ET PA behavioral models are important to predict the impact of the nonlinear distortion, and memory effect of ET PA on the spectrum in wireless communication. ET PA linearization techniques can be designed based on the behavioral modeling.
Understanding Photovoltaic Properties Of Pbs Quantum Dot Solids Via Solution Contacting, Vitalii Dereviankin, Erik Johansson
Understanding Photovoltaic Properties Of Pbs Quantum Dot Solids Via Solution Contacting, Vitalii Dereviankin, Erik Johansson
Student Research Symposium
Photovoltaic (PV) devices based on PbS quantum dot (QD) solids demonstrate high photontoelectron conversion yields. However, record power conversion efficiency remain low, in part due to small photovoltages, which in turn are affected by both bulk and interfacial defects. Their relative impacts on limiting the photovoltaic performance of QD solids are not known. Interfacial defects can be formed when contacting a semiconductor and may dominate the semiconductor/metal or metaloxide junction properties. The objective of this study is to explore whether electrochemical contacting using liquid electrolytes provides means of contacting QD solids without introducing interfacial defects. We have initially focused on …
Speculations On A City For Mars, Edouard Terzis
Speculations On A City For Mars, Edouard Terzis
School of Architecture - Theses
This thesis proposes the reinterpretation of architectural forms as the index of the constitution of the idea of the city. “Speculations on a City on Mars” is paradoxical in a sense as it superposes both the managerial representation of a city, that is Zoning, along with the speculative aspect of an extra-terrestrial city.

Single-use Technologies II: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications
In the recent years droplet-based microfluidic techniques were developed and used for various screening purposes mainly in the field of life-sciences and biotechnology. Therefore, droplet volumes in a range from pL to μL were used and different technology platforms were necessary to produce the required fluidic devices which made of various materials. Traditionally, lithography combined with etching processes were used to produce precise glass or silicon devices. But, hot embossing and injection molding techniques are better suited for the production of single use devices. Recently, 3D-printing technologies are under development for the generation of individual costumes made microfluidic devices in …

Methanol Steam Reforming: Na Doping Of Pt/Ysz Provides Fine Tuning Of Selectivity, Michela Martinelli, Gary Jacobs, Uschi M. Graham, Burtron H. Davis
Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications
In this work, we found that sodium doping can be used to improve CO2 selectivity for supported Pt catalyst during methanol steam reforming. These materials are usually very active in the low temperature range; however, they are characterized by high selectivity of CO, which is a poison in downstream polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEM-FC) application. With Na doping, we found that CO2 selectivity was higher than 90% when 2.5 wt.% of sodium was added to Pt/YSZ. We have speculated that the different product distribution is due to a different reaction pathway being opened for CH3OH …
Biomaterials For Local, Controlled Drug Delivery To The Injured Spinal Cord, Alexis M. Ziemba, Ryan J. Gilbert
Biomaterials For Local, Controlled Drug Delivery To The Injured Spinal Cord, Alexis M. Ziemba, Ryan J. Gilbert
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Affecting approximately 17,000 new people each year, spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating injury that leads to permanent paraplegia or tetraplegia. Current pharmacological approaches are limited in their ability to ameliorate this injury pathophysiology, as many are not delivered locally, for a sustained duration, or at the correct injury time point. With this review, we aim to communicate the importance of combinatorial biomaterial and pharmacological approaches that target certain aspects of the dynamically changing pathophysiology of SCI. After reviewing the pathophysiology timeline, we present experimental biomaterial approaches to provide local sustained doses of drug. In this review, we present …

It's No Accident: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Vehicle Safety Inspections, Alex Hoagland, Trevor Woolley
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
Traffic fatalities have fallen steadily over the past two decades, particularly those due to car failure. Many have attributed this fall to safer vehicle technology. This trend has led many states to reevaluate mandatory vehicle safety inspection programs. This study sought to answer the question, does the elimination of vehicle safety inspections have an effect on traffic fatalities?

Precoder Design For Simultaneous Wireless Information And Power Transfer With Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Xiaodong Zhu, Weiliang Zeng, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we investigate the mutual information maximization for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), where perfect channel state information (CSI) is known at the transmitter. We formulate an optimization problem under the constraints of transmit power and harvested energy. Different from previous work, we assume the input signals to be taken from finite-alphabet inputs instead of Gaussian signals. The formulated problem is NP-hard, so a global optimal solution cannot be found with polynomial time complexity. However, by exploiting the structure of the problem, this optimization problem can be transformed into a …

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
This article is the third in a series of reports called Pilot Source Study 2015. In 2010, when the U.S. Congress considered dramatic changes to airline pilot qualifications, researchers from the ‘‘Pilot Source Study 2010’’ sampled pilots from six regional airlines to investigate how pilots’ backgrounds affected their performance in airline training. In 2012, when the FAA proposed rulemaking to implement Public Law 111-216, the ‘‘Pilot Source Study 2012’’ researchers repeated the study with a new sample of pilots from seven different regional airlines. Data from these two studies were combined into a Pre-Law dataset. On August 1, 2013, the …

Single-use Technologies II: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications
Roll-to-roll (R2R) technologies with roller-based nanoimprinting methods enable manufacturing of highly cost-effective and large-scale sheets of flexible polymer film with precise structures on a micro- and nanoscale 1. Areas that can benefit strongly from such large scale technologies are microfluidics, biosensors, and lab-on-chip products for point of care diagnostics, drug discovery and food control. Here, R2R fabrication could greatly reduce production costs and increase manufacturing capacity with respect to currently used products. A pilot line with this technology is investigated in the European Horizon 2020 project R2R Biofluidics and its capabilities are tested on two Demonstrators: - Demonstrator 1: In-vitro …
Protein-Specific Empirical Model Of Protein Adsorption On Surfaces, Dan Nicolau
Protein-Specific Empirical Model Of Protein Adsorption On Surfaces, Dan Nicolau
Single-use Technologies II: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications
Predicting protein adsorption from solution to a surface is an important problem in biomedicine and related fields. Despite constant attention in the literature, it is not currently possible to predict quantitatively the amount of adsorbed protein given environment, protein and surface parameters. We present a purely empirical approach to predict protein adsorption using a linearly piecewise model with breakpoint, based on progress in the understanding and quantification of physico-chemical properties on protein molecular surfaces. This model is capable of accounting for over 90% of the variance in the data, despite the fact that the adsorption data spans over three orders …

Leukemia is cancer of the blood and bone marrow, it is the most common cancer found in children and is found to be more than one fourth of pediatric cancers. It causes white blood cells to become abnormal and the body to become weak. This deficiency in the immune system reduces the body's ability to fight infection or simple airborne illnesses, causing extensive treatment of common pathogens and cancer treatment. The present review covers all topics, from diagnosis to treatment of pediatric leukemia, as well as the stages of growth and physiological changes throughout the process. As leukemia has a …
A Hybrid Dynamic System Assessment Methodology For Multi-Modal Transportation-Electrification, Thomas J.T Van Der Wardt, Amro M. Farid
A Hybrid Dynamic System Assessment Methodology For Multi-Modal Transportation-Electrification, Thomas J.T Van Der Wardt, Amro M. Farid
Dartmouth Scholarship
In recent years, electrified transportation, be it in the form of buses, trains, or cars have become an emerging form of mobility. Electric vehicles (EVs), especially, are set to expand the amount of electric miles driven and energy consumed. Nevertheless, the question remains as to whether EVs will be technically feasible within infrastructure systems. Fundamentally, EVs interact with three interconnected systems: the (physical) transportation system, the electric power grid, and their supporting information systems. Coupling of the two physical systems essentially forms a nexus, the transportation-electricity nexus (TEN). This paper presents a hybrid dynamic system assessment methodology for multi-modal transportation-electrification. …

Recent advances of Internet and microelectronics technologies have led to the concept of smart grid which has been a widespread concern for industry, governments, and academia. The openness of communications in the smart grid environment makes the system vulnerable to different types of attacks. The implementation of secure communication and the protection of consumers’ privacy have become challenging issues. The data aggregation scheme is an important technique for preserving consumers’ privacy because it can stop the leakage of a specific consumer’s data. To satisfy the security requirements of practical applications, a lot of data aggregation schemes were presented over the …

Classification Of Images Based On Pixels That Represent A Small Part Of The Scene. A Case Applied To Microaneurysms In Fundus Retina Images, Pablo F. Ordonez, Pablo F. Ordonez
Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), the state of the art in image classification, have proven to be as effective as an ophthalmologist, when detecting Referable Diabetic Retinopathy (RDR). Having a size of less than 1\% of the total image, microaneurysms are early lesions in DR that are difficult to classify. The purpose of this thesis is to improve the accuracy of detection of microaneurysms using a model that includes two CNNs with different input image sizes, 60x60 and 420x420 pixels. These models were trained using the Kaggle and Messidor datasets and tested independently against the Kaggle dataset, showing a sensitivity of …

Information Theoretic Eeg Analysis Of Children With Severe Disabilities In Response To Power Mobility Training: A Pilot Study, Joshua O. Usoro
Information Theoretic Eeg Analysis Of Children With Severe Disabilities In Response To Power Mobility Training: A Pilot Study, Joshua O. Usoro
Masters Theses
Studies have shown that self-initiated locomotion in infants and young children is paramount to developing motor skills, social skills, and visuospatial perception. Because children with multiple, severe disabilities are often not able to produce movement on their own due to limited motor control, access to a power mobility device may be vital to their overall development. This study extends data analysis from an exploratory study, and investigates the use of information theoretics in providing objective measures to characterize changes in electroencephalograms (EEG) as a result of power mobility training, and relates these changes to observed rehabilitation outcomes. Three subjects with …
Evaluating The Effect Of Temporary Casing On Drilled Shaft Rock Socket Capacity, Daniel J. Hagerman
Evaluating The Effect Of Temporary Casing On Drilled Shaft Rock Socket Capacity, Daniel J. Hagerman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect on side shear resistance in limestone when temporary casing is used. Due to testing in actual limestone being an unrealistic goal, simulated limestone mixes were prepared and cast into 6 – 42 in. diameter beds. Limestone throughout Florida can be quite varied (e.g. 50-5000 psi) but where stronger limestone is not likely to be penetrated by casing installation. Therefore, target unconfined compressive strengths of the study specimens ranged between 60 psi to 850 psi.
A simulated limestone material was developed based on over 200 cylinders cast for unconfined compression testing …
Using Activated Charcoal To Reuse Anesthetic Gas, Patrick Kolbay, Joseph Orr, Kai Kück
Using Activated Charcoal To Reuse Anesthetic Gas, Patrick Kolbay, Joseph Orr, Kai Kück
Utah Space Grant Consortium
General anesthesia enables surgery, with anesthesia machines being the predominant tool to do so. However, these machines are hard to maintain, costly, and require significant supporting infrastructure. The current design of anesthesia machines demands the disposal of anesthetic gases at a rate equal to fresh oxygen entering the system. This causes several orders of magnitude more anesthetic vaporized than needed, yielding negative economic and environmental impact. To address this, we propose utilizing the porous surface of activated charcoal to absorb and desorb the anesthetic gases to be reused.
A Hydrodynamic Model For Plasmasphere Refilling Following Geomagnetic Storms, Kausik Chatterjee, Robert W. Schunk
A Hydrodynamic Model For Plasmasphere Refilling Following Geomagnetic Storms, Kausik Chatterjee, Robert W. Schunk
Utah Space Grant Consortium
The refilling of the plasmasphere following a geomagnetic storm remains one of the longstanding problems involving ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling. Both diffusion and hydrodynamic approximations have been adopted for the modeling and solution of this problem. The diffusion approximation neglects the nonlinear inertial term in the momentum equation and so this approximation is not rigorously valid immediately after a storm. The principle focus of this work is the formulation and development of a hydrodynamic refilling model (that includes the nonlinear inertial term) using the fluxcorrected transport method, a numerical method that is extremely well suited to handling nonlinear problems with shocks and …
