Understanding The Impact Of Strategic Team Formation In Early Programming Education, Tony A. Lowe, Sean B. Brophy
School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series
This evidence based research looks at the impact of a team-based instruction on learning to program in a first year engineering course designed under the Bauhaus studio model. Each team is formulated with a “more knowledgeable other” [1], or for this paper the “ringer” based on selfreported prior learning. The ringer is intended to support the team through early programming challenges. In addition to the professor and teaching assistants, having a peer mentor can yield higher satisfaction and confidence in learners [2]. Our analysis evaluates learning outcomes as student progress through the term, comparing performance based on the performance and …
Vicarious Calibration Of Suas Microbolometer Temperature Imagery For Estimation Of Radiometric Land Surface Temperature., Alfonso F. Torres-Rua
Vicarious Calibration Of Suas Microbolometer Temperature Imagery For Estimation Of Radiometric Land Surface Temperature., Alfonso F. Torres-Rua
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
In recent years, the availability of lightweight microbolometer thermal cameras compatible with small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) has allowed their use in diverse scientific and management activities that require sub-meter pixel resolution. Nevertheless, as with sensors already used in temperature remote sensing (e.g., Landsat satellites), a radiance atmospheric correction is necessary to estimate land surface temperature. This is because atmospheric conditions at any sUAS flight elevation will have an adverse impact on the image accuracy, derived calculations, and study replicability using the microbolometer technology. This study presents a vicarious calibration methodology (sUAS-specific, time-specific, flight-specific, and sensor-specific) for sUAS temperature imagery …

Multiple Ngf Treatments Enhance Regeneration In Peripheral Nerves, Keaton Karlinsey, Alonzo Cook
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this project is to develop an effective treatment for damaged nerves. A team led by Dr. Cook has been working in this area for several years. Their project used a combination of biochemical treatments on rats with damaged sciatic nerves to improve the rate and quality of regeneration. The team is comparing the recovery of the nerves through a treatment receiving a combination of Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) and Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) with a treatment receiving only NGF and with a control that receives no treatment. LPC has been shown to upregulate the trkA receptor for NGF, thus …

Minimum Required Detection Range For Detect And Avoid Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Jared Kevin Wikle, Tim Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Laith Rasmi Sahawneh
Faculty Publications
For unmanned aircraft systems to gain full access to the National Airspace System, they must have the capability to detect and avoid other aircraft. To safely avoid an- other aircraft, an unmanned aircraft must detect the intruder aircraft with ample time and distance to allow the ownship to track the intruder, perform risk assessment, plan an avoidance path, and execute the maneuver. This paper describes two analytical methods for finding the minimum detection range to ensure that these detection and avoidance steps can be carried out. The first method, time-based geometric velocity vectors, includes the bank-angle dynamics of the ownship; …

Performance Analysis Of On-Line Camera-Based Web Inspection Sensors: A Pilot-Scale Experimental Study, Barry Hojjatie Dr, E. Lafond
Georgia Journal of Science
Camera-based web inspection sensors have been available in the paper industry for many years. However, in recent years because of a market demand for high-quality paper products, the need for realtime flaw-detection systems has increased significantly. In addition to flaw-detection capabilities, these systems should be capable of doing defect classification (e.g., relative to size and type of flaws) as well as defect localization (providing information on location of flaws). The technique employed in flaw detection and measurement principles used in common systems are based on laser, CCD (charge coupled device) camera, or infrared technology. The study was designed to determine …

More and more universities are pursuing interdisciplinary academic activities that span across department and college boundaries. Administrative structures to facilitate such programs are difficult to establish within traditional university frameworks consisting of disciplinary departments and colleges. Often interdisciplinary programs are housed in a traditional disciplinary department or college, or in a standalone center reporting to a college dean or the provost. The difficulty of these structures is obtaining broad buy-in from faculty across departments and having disciplinary degree programs include interdisciplinary coursework.
To overcome the difficulties described above, an innovative shared department structure that fosters collaborations to advance interdisciplinary education …

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
One of the fundamental practices identified in Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is argumentation, which has been researched in P-12 science education for the previous two decades but has yet to be studied within the context of P-12 engineering education. This research explores how elementary and middle school science teachers incorporated argumentation into engineering design-based STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) integration curricular units they developed during a professional development program. To gain a better understanding of how teachers included argumentation in their curricula, a multiple case study approach was conducted using four STEM integration units. While evidence of argumentation …

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Today’s college-aged students are graduating into a world that relies on multidisciplinary talents to succeed. Engineering college majors are more likely to find jobs after college that are outside of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, including jobs in healthcare, management, and social services. A survey of engineering undergraduate students at the University of Colorado Boulder in November 2012 indicated a desire by students to simultaneously pursue secondary teacher licensure alongside their engineering degrees: 25 percent ‘‘agreed’’ or ‘‘strongly agreed’’ that they ‘‘would be interested in earning grades 7–12 science or math teaching licenses while [they] earn [their] engineering …

Examining Experienced Teachers’ Noticing Of And Responses To Students’ Engineering, Aaron W. Johnson, Kristen B. Wendell, Jessica Watkins
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Engineering design places unique demands on teachers, as students are coming up with new, unanticipated ideas to problems along often unpredictable trajectories. These demands motivate a responsive approach to teaching, in which teachers attend their students’ thinking and flexibly adapt their instructional plans and objectives. A great deal of literature has focused on responsive teaching in science and mathematics, but there has been little research or professional development on this approach in engineering. In this work, we conducted clinical video-based interviews with six elementary teachers experienced in teaching engineering to discuss what they noticed in their students’ thinking and how …

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
This mixed-methods study examines how teachers who have taught one or two units of the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) curriculum for two years reported on: students’ responses to design failure; the ways in which they, the teachers, supported these students and used fail words (e.g. fail, failure); and the teachers’ broad perspectives and messages to students about failure. In addition, the study explores how strategies, perspectives, messages, and fail word use may change after two years of engineering instruction. This study builds on previous work about elementary teachers’: perspectives on failure prior to teaching engineering, and responses to and perspectives …
From Creativity To Classification: A Logical Approach To Patent Searching, Marian G. Armour-Gemmen
From Creativity To Classification: A Logical Approach To Patent Searching, Marian G. Armour-Gemmen
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Engineering students and professors need to understand and search intellectual property. In the past, librarians have instructed them on using the United States Patent Classification (USPC). In 2015, after a period of transition, the United States Patent and Trademark Office phased out the USPC and began exclusively classifying in the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC). This adoption presented librarians a challenge of instructing students and professors in the easiest and most effective patent search. By tying patent searching to an example and presenting classification in an understandable fashion using CPC in conjunction with USPC, this writer presents a logical directed search …

Boise State University (BSU) implemented an across-the-board reform of calculus instruction during the 2014 calendar year. The details of the reform, described elsewhere (Bullock, 2015), (Bullock 2016), involve both pedagogical and curricular reform. Gains from the project have included a jump in Calculus I pass rate, greater student engagement, greater instructor satisfaction, a shift toward active learning pedagogies, and the emergence of a strong collaborative teaching community. This paper examines the effects of the reform on student retention. Since the curricular reform involved pruning some content and altering course outcomes, which could conceivably have negative downstream impacts, we report on …

A survey of papers in the ASEE Multidisciplinary Engineering Division over the last three years shows three main areas of emphasis: individual courses; profiles of specific projects; and capstone design courses. However, propagating multidisciplinary education across the vast majority of disciplines offered at educational institutions with varying missions requires models that are independent of the disciplines, programs, and institutions in which they were originally conceived. Further, models that can propagate must be cost effective, scalable, and engage and benefit participating faculty. Since 2015, a consortium of twenty-four institutions has come together around one such model, the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) …

Engineering: Faculty Publications
Capstone design courses are common in engineering design programs, but they vary substantially across institution and department. The goal of the decennial capstone design survey initiative has been to capture data from capstone design courses every ten years to identify current practices and changes over time. The 1994, 2005, and 2015 surveys have focused almost exclusively on capstone programs within the United States. This paper documents an initial extension of the 2015 survey to Australia and New Zealand to identify how capstone courses are implemented outside the United States and what strategies can be shared across countries. As in their …
