Unmanned Aerial Systems For Monitoring Trace Tropospheric Gases, Travis J. Schuyler, Marcelo I. Guzman Oct 2017

Unmanned Aerial Systems For Monitoring Trace Tropospheric Gases, Travis J. Schuyler, Marcelo I. Guzman

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) has changed the composition of the atmosphere during the Anthropocene. Accurately documenting the sources and magnitude of GHGs emission is an important undertaking for discriminating the contributions of different processes to radiative forcing. Currently there is no mobile platform that is able to quantify trace gases at altitudes(UASs) can be deployed on-site in minutes and can support the payloads necessary to quantify trace gases. Therefore, current efforts combine the use of UASs available on the civilian market with inexpensively designed analytical systems for monitoring atmospheric trace gases. In this context, this perspective introduces the …

Hidden Players Of Ethical Mentoring For Women Graduate Students In Science And Engineering, Laura Gelles, Idalis Villanueva, Marialuisa Di Stefano

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

The relationship a graduate student and their research advisor have while they work together in academia is pivotal to the development and success of the research and involved parties (Polson, 2003). Students rely on their advisor to guide them through the academic and research process while also being a role model of professional and ethical behavior (Johnson, 2016; King, 2003). In essence, a research advisor must accept the trust and confidence of the graduate student to act in their best interest by following ethical mentoring principles. However, if the advisor is unaware of the best interest of their students or …

Grouping Environmental Factors Influencing Individual Decision-Making Behavior In Software Projects: A Cluster Analysis, Luiz Fernando Capretz Oct 2017

Grouping Environmental Factors Influencing Individual Decision-Making Behavior In Software Projects: A Cluster Analysis, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

An individual’s decision-making behavior is heavily influenced by and adapted to external environmental factors. Given that software development is a human-centered activity, individual decision-making behavior may affect the software project quality. Although environmental factors affecting decision-making behavior in software projects have been identified in prior literature, there is not yet an objective and a full taxonomy of these factors. Thus, it is not trivial to manage these complex and diverse factors. To address this deficiency, we first design a semantic similarity algorithm between words by utilizing the synonymy and hypernymy relationships in WordNet. Further, we propose a method to measure …

Improving Rolling Bearing Fault Diagnosis By Ds Evidence Theory Based Fusion Model, Xuemei Yao, Shaobo Li, Jianjun Hu

Faculty Publications

Rolling bearing plays an important role in rotating machinery and its working condition directly affects the equipment efficiency. While dozens of methods have been proposed for real-time bearing fault diagnosis and monitoring, the fault classification accuracy of existing algorithms is still not satisfactory. This work presents a novel algorithm fusion model based on principal component analysis and Dempster-Shafer evidence theory for rolling bearing fault diagnosis. It combines the advantages of the learning vector quantization (LVQ) neural network model and the decision tree model. Experiments under three different spinning bearing speeds and two different crack sizes show that our fusion model …

Development Of Novel N-Isopropylacrylamide (Nipaam) Based Hydrogels With Varying Content Of Chrysin Multiacrylate, Shuo Tang, Martha Floy, Rohit Bhandari, Thomas D. Dziubla, J. Zach Hilt

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A series of novel temperature responsive hydrogels were synthesized by free radical polymerization with varying content of chrysin multiacrylate (ChryMA). The goal was to study the impact of this novel polyphenolic-based multiacrylate on the properties of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) hydrogels. The temperature responsive behavior of the copolymerized gels was characterized by swelling studies, and their lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was characterized through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was shown that the incorporation of ChryMA decreased the swelling ratios of the hydrogels and shifted their LCSTs to a lower temperature. Gels with different ChryMA content showed different levels of response to …

Detection Of Methylation On Dsdna Using Nanopores In Mos2 Membrane, David Estrada

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Methylation at the 5-carbon position of the cytosine nucleotide base in DNA has been shown to be a reliable diagnostic biomarker for carcinogenesis. Early detection of methylation and intervention could drastically increase the effectiveness of therapy and reduce the cancer mortality rate. Current methods for detecting methylation involve bisulfite genomic sequencing, which are cumbersome and demand a large sample size of bodily fluids to yield accurate results. Hence, more efficient and cost effective methods are desired. Based on our previous work, we present a novel nanopore-based assay using a nanopore in a MoS2 membrane, and the methyl-binding protein (MBP), …

On Inductance Of Power Islands And Its Impact On Decoupling Behavior In High Speed Boards, Mosin Mondal, Bruce Archambeault Oct 2017

On Inductance Of Power Islands And Its Impact On Decoupling Behavior In High Speed Boards, Mosin Mondal, Bruce Archambeault

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Design of power delivery networks for printed circuit boards hosting both analog and digital parts often employs small power islands for supplying power to sensitive components. While providing necessary isolation from noise generated by other components, the power islands also experience increased inductance due to current crowding at the bridge. In this paper, the inductance at a port on the power island has been quantified. The variation of port inductance with the bridge width and slot/gap width has been studied. It has been demonstrated that the increased inductance adversely affects the effectiveness of decoupling capacitors. This necessitates more careful design …

All-Dielectric Metamaterials: Irrelevance Of Negative Refraction To Overlapped Mie Resonances, Navid Gandji, George Semouchkin, Elena Semouchkina Oct 2017

All-Dielectric Metamaterials: Irrelevance Of Negative Refraction To Overlapped Mie Resonances, Navid Gandji, George Semouchkin, Elena Semouchkina

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

All-dielectric metamaterials comprised of identical resonators draw a lot of attention as low-loss media providing for negative refraction, which is commonly attributed to the double negativity of effective material parameters caused by overlapping of Mie resonances. We study dispersion diagrams of such metamaterials composed of dielectric rod arrays and show that bandwidths of positive and negative refraction and its type are irrelevant to the negativity of effective parameters; instead, they are unambiguously defined by the shape and the location of the second transmission branch in dispersion diagrams and thus can be controlled by the lattice constants.

Predicting General Aviation Pilots’ Weather-Related Performance Through A Scenario-Based Assessment, Jessica Cruit, Christina Frederick, Beth Blickensderfer, Joseph Keebler, Thomas Guinn Oct 2017

Predicting General Aviation Pilots’ Weather-Related Performance Through A Scenario-Based Assessment, Jessica Cruit, Christina Frederick, Beth Blickensderfer, Joseph Keebler, Thomas Guinn

Publications

Weather-related accidents continue to challenge the general aviation (GA) community and with the development of advanced weather technology, GA pilots need additional education and training on how to effectively use these weather products to ensure flight safety. Currently, the literature on aviation weather suggests that there is a gap in both training and assessment strategy for GA pilots. Furthermore, several studies advocate assessing GA pilots at a deeper level of learning by including weather-based, scenario/application questions on the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) written exam for private pilots. After first developing a scenario-based, aviation weather assessment, we used a multiple regression …

Cam-Based Pose-Independent Counterweighting For Partial Body-Weight Support In Rehabilitation, Ashish Shinde

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis presents the design and testing of a body weight support system for gait training in a two-dimensional workspace. Extension of the system to a three-dimensional workspace is not within the scope of this thesis.

Gait dysfunctions are changes in normal walking patterns, often related to a disease or abnormality in different areas of the body. There are numerous body weight support (BWS) systems present in the market which are applied to rehabilitation scenarios in mobility recovery like in gait training. But most of these BWE systems are costly and generally are stationary devices. A major drawback of such …

Improving Hpc Communication Library Performance On Modern Architectures, Matthew G. F. Dosanjh Oct 2017

Improving Hpc Communication Library Performance On Modern Architectures, Matthew G. F. Dosanjh

Computer Science ETDs

As high-performance computing (HPC) systems advance towards exascale (10^18 operations per second), they must leverage increasing levels of parallelism to achieve their performance goals. In addition to increased parallelism, machines of that scale will have strict power limitations placed on them. One direction currently being explored to alleviate those issues are many-core processors such as Intel’s Xeon Phi line. Many-core processors sacrifice clock speed and core complexity, such as out of order pipelining, to increase the number of cores on a die. While this increases floating point throughput, it can reduce the performance of serialized, synchronized, and latency sensitive code …

In this paper, a new method for ranking interval grey numbers to address the challenge in multi-criteria decision-making problems with interval grey numbers has been proposed. This new method involves the risk preferences of decision makers. First, we propose a new method to rank the interval grey numbers by comparing the possibility degree or whitened value. Second, we classify the decision makers into three different types according to their risk preferences then we establish the corresponding risk preference assumptions to solve the problem that different interval grey numbers with the same possibility degree or whitened value. Finally, we use a …

This paper proposes a novel method by rethinking the method of moments (MoM) solving process into a machine learning training process. Based on the artificial neural network (ANN), the conventional MoM matrix is treated as the training data set, based on which machine learning training process becomes conventional linear algebra MoM solving process. The trained result is the solution of MoM. The multiple linear regression (MLR) is utilized to train the model. Amazon Web Service (AWS) is used as the computations platform to utilize the existing hardware and software resources for machine learning. To verify the feasibility of the proposed …

Orbital Angular Momentum Generation From A Defect In Photonic Crystals, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha Oct 2017

Orbital Angular Momentum Generation From A Defect In Photonic Crystals, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) is generated from a defect in two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystals (PC). By breaking the translation symmetry along the two orthogonal directions, the localized defect states can be supported within photonic bandgap of the PC. Particularly, we examine the characteristics of the point defect states along the azimuthal direction by the finite-difference (FD) based eigenvalue analysis. We find that vortex beam carrying OAM can be generated from the defect. The novel design can be easily integrated in optical circuits.

Using Subdivision Surface Technique To Solve Generalized Debye Sources Based Efie, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Jie Li, Balasubramaniam Shanker Oct 2017

Using Subdivision Surface Technique To Solve Generalized Debye Sources Based Efie, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Jie Li, Balasubramaniam Shanker

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we extend the idea of generalized Debye sources (GDS) method to electric field integral equation (EFIE) and establish a new well-conditioned GDS-EFIE. The principal challenge in implementing this approach arises from the difficulty in developing a robust solver for the surface Laplacian equation. In this paper, we propose using subdivision surfaces that permits such a solution due to the higher order continuous nature of the surface representation. This permits an efficient and effective solution. Thus, GDS-EFIE can be resolved within isogeometric analysis framework as an emerging approach for design-through-analysis. Several numerical results are provided to validate the …

Prediction-Based Adaptive Robust Control For A Class Of Uncertain Time-Delay Systems, Jayaprakash Suraj Nandiganahalli, Cheolhyeon Kwon, Inseok Hwang

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

This paper presents an integrated control design approach for a class of dynamical systems that satisfy a certain matching condition subject to known input time-delay, unknown parameters, and time-varying disturbances, simultaneously. A novel nonlinear predictor adaptive robust control (PARC) is proposed to track a desired state trajectory. The controller uses predictor-based model compensation to attenuate the effect of input time-delay, gradient type projection with prediction-based learning mechanisms to reduce the parameter uncertainties, and prediction-based nonlinear robust feedback to attenuate the effect of model approximation errors and disturbances, simultaneously. The controller guarantees a prescribed transient performance (with global exponential convergence) and …
