Statistical Scaling Of Turbulent Surface Pressure In The Atmospheric Boundary Layer, Gregory William Lyons Jan 2016

Statistical Scaling Of Turbulent Surface Pressure In The Atmospheric Boundary Layer, Gregory William Lyons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Turbulence in the atmosphere produces fluctuations in static pressure through a variety of mechanisms. These fluctuations are of interest both to atmospheric scientists, as a fluid dynamic property, and to acousticians, as a source of wind noise. At the ground surface, previous work has found the dominant source of pressure fluctuations to be an interaction of the turbulent vertical velocity with the shear rate in the mean wind. In this work, the existing theoretical framework was extended to investigate the effects of atmospheric stability, shear anisotropy, and different turbulence models. A rapid-distortion model was introduced and compared with the existing …

Kinematic Modeling Of An Automated Laser Line Scanning System, Kiran Sunil Deshmukh Jan 2016

Kinematic Modeling Of An Automated Laser Line Scanning System, Kiran Sunil Deshmukh

Wayne State University Theses

This research work describes the geometric coordinate transformation in an automated laser line scanning system caused by movements required for scanning a component surface. The elements of an automated laser scanning system (robot, laser line scanner, and the component coordinate system) function as a mechanical linkage to obtain a trajectory on a component surface. This methodology solves the forward kinematics, derives the component surface, and uses inverse kinematic equations to characterize the movement of the entire automated scanning system on point trajectory. To reach a point on the component, joint angles of robot have been calculated. As a result, trajectory …

Enhancement Of Cancer Vaccine Efficacy Via Nanoparticle Or Molecular-Based Adjuvants, Myunggi An

Wayne State University Theses

Adjuvants are immunomodulators which enhance immune responses to vaccines. However, parenteral administration of unformulated adjuvants fails to reach lymph nodes (LNs), the anatomic organ where the primary functions of immune cells are orchestrated. The LN-targeting delivery plays the key roles in promoting immune activation and has the great potential to transform disease treatment. The main goal of this thesis is to develop efficient vaccine delivery systems to target therapeutics into draining lymph nodes (dLNs) for ensuring their immunostimulatory activity. We introduced therapeutic applications of activating TLR9 with synthetic CpG oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) agonists in nanoparticle or molecular form to activate immune …

Novel Design And Synthesis Of Transition Metal Hydroxides And Oxides For Energy Storage Device Applications, Peifeng Li

Wayne State University Theses

Supercapacitors (SCs) and Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are two types of important electrical energy storage devices with high power density and high energy density respectively. However, to satisfy the increasing demand of high-performance energy storage devices, the energy density of SCs and power/energy densities of LIBs have to be further improved. The exploration, research, and development of electrode materials with high-performance for applications in SCs and LIBs are still needed to meet the ever-increasing demand on energy and power densities. Herein, the amorphous Ni-Co-Mo ternary hydroxides nanoflakes for SCs and oxides nanoflakes for LIBs with ultrathin stature, abundant open spaces, and …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Strategic 4D trajectory conflict-free planning is recognized as one of the core technologies of next-generation air traffic control and automation systems. To resolve potential conflicts during strategic 4D conflict-free trajectory planning, a protection-zone conflict-control model based on air traffic control separation constraints was proposed, in which relationships between expected arrival time and adjusted arrival time at conflicting waypoints for aircraft queues were built and transformed into dynamic linear equations under the definition of max-plus algebra. A method for strategic deconfliction of 4D trajectory was then proposed using two strategies: arrival time adjustment and departure time adjustment. In addition, departure time …

Novel H.265 Video Traffic Prediction Models Using Artificial Neural Networks, Collin Daly Jan 2016

Novel H.265 Video Traffic Prediction Models Using Artificial Neural Networks, Collin Daly

Honors College Theses

In this work, we propose the use of non-linear, autoregressive neural network models for predicting video frame sizes. This model utilizes H.265 encoded video traces as inputs and the predicted future frame sizes as outputs. This model is developed to predict ultra-high definition video frame encoded with H.265 within IP networks. The video I, P, and B frames are predicted separately to improve model prediction accuracy. This approach is verified in MATLAB using various H.265 video traces. The results indicate that the proposed models were able to predict the video traffic fairly accurately.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Higher oxygenates synthesis by catalytic conversion of synthesis gas are the potential approaches to replace fossil fuels and produce chemicals for pharmaceutical manufacture, detergents and polymer industry. Cobalt-based catalysts are the most promising catalysts to replace noble metal catalysts for producing ethanol, acetaldehyde and higher oxygenates via CO hydrogenation. The formation of higher oxygenates requires active sites that can adsorb CO non-dissociatively and insert to the alkyl intermediate. The hydrogenation of the CO-inserted intermediates yields C2 and C2+ oxygenates. The main focus of this study is to investigate the active site for non-dissociative CO adsorption, and the modification of the …

A Statistical Approach To Broadband Noise Suppression, Walter Eversman Jan 2016

A Statistical Approach To Broadband Noise Suppression, Walter Eversman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method for estimating achievable attenuation for broadband noise in an inlet duct, consistent with Dyer's suggestion that an appropriate model includes all propagating acoustic modes at equal power and random phase, is proposed. Broadband noise is represented in a frequency domain analysis by a statistical distribution of propagating duct modes. The required number of modes is estimated by Rice's approximation method and verified in FEM modeling. For each propagating circumferential mode propagating radial modes have equal acoustic power and random phase. Source acoustic power is distributed among circumferential modes according to the number of propagating radial modes in the …

Multi-mode micro propulsion is a potential game-changing technology enabling rapidly composable small satellites with unprecedented mission flexibility. Maximum mission flexibility requires propellant that is shared between the chemical and electric propulsion systems. Previous research has identified a promising monopropellant that is both readily catalytically exothermically decomposed (chemical mode) and electro sprayable (electric mode). In this work the linear burn rate of this monopropellant is determined to aid design of the microtube catalytic chemical thruster. A pressurized fixed volume reactor is used to determine the linear burn rate. Benchmark experiments use a 13-molar mixture of hydroxylammonium nitrate and water and show …

Direct Position Control Of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Filaments, Matthew C. Paliwoda, Joshua L. Rovey, Mitchell Wainwright

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Controllable patterns of plasma filaments are being explored for reconfigurable metamaterial applications. When operated in a filamentary mode, volume dielectric barrier discharges are known to produce patterns of self-organizing plasma filaments. In this work the presence and intensity of a single filament at a fixed location is controlled by an isolated and independently electrically adjusted needle electrode. Time-averaged normalized light intensity, current, and voltage are measured while varying the voltage of the needle through a self-biasing resistance. For a 7.5 kV, 3.2 kHz DBD, the needle-controlled filament discharges similar to adjacent filaments at low potentials but stops discharging at a …

Adaptive control-based schemes have been implemented to date in a variety of different ap-plications. However, the ability to obtain a predictable transient closed-loop performance in adaptive systems is still a challenging problem from a verification and validation point of view. To face this problem we have recently introduced an analysis and design framework for adaptive control systems in the presence of bounded uncertainty and bounded adaptive control (the boundedness can be enforced, for instance, by a parameter projection mechanism) showing that the transitory performance of a MRAC system can be expressed, analyzed, and optimized via a convex optimization formulation based …

Bridge Rating Based On In-Situ Weigh-In-Motion And Health Monitoring Data, Dana Feng Jan 2016

Bridge Rating Based On In-Situ Weigh-In-Motion And Health Monitoring Data, Dana Feng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Parallel to the bridge design methodology changes from the Allowable Stress Design to the Load Factor Design, and then to the reliability based Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), bridge load rating method has also been evolving. Applying the reliability theory to the bridge load rating is more complex than applying to the LRFD since any conservatism can have a significant effect on the assessment of bridge capacity, particularly in load posting and bridge replacement. Although the current Load and Resistant Factor Rating (LRFR) method applying the concept of reliability analyses, it uses very limited site-specific data due to practical …
