Reactivity Of Hydroxyl Radical: Mechanistic Insight Into The Reactivity With Dissolved Organic Matter, Mallika Khare
Reactivity Of Hydroxyl Radical: Mechanistic Insight Into The Reactivity With Dissolved Organic Matter, Mallika Khare
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) that produce highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (HO•) are attractive and promising water and wastewater treatment technologies because HO• can destroy a variety of organic compounds. However, background dissolved organic matter (DOM) significantly reduces the performance of AOPs by scavenging HO•. The conventional experimental approach to identifying ‘average’ reactivity limits our mechanistic understanding of the reaction of HO• with complex mixture of surrogate DOM. This is the first study to use quantum mechanical methods to understand the elementary reactions of HO• with a model monomer of DOM. “Temple Northeastern Birmingham model” (TNB). The theoretically calculated aqueous-phase free …
Mechanical Testing Of Fused Filament 3-D Printed Components For Distributed Manufacturing, Nagendra Gautam Tanikella
Mechanical Testing Of Fused Filament 3-D Printed Components For Distributed Manufacturing, Nagendra Gautam Tanikella
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Fused filament fabrication (FFF)-based open-source 3-D printers offer the potential of decentralized manufacturing both in developing and developed countries. Unfortunately, a severe lack of data and standards relating to material properties and printed components limit this potential. This thesis first investigates the mechanical properties of a wide-range of FFF materials and provides a database of mechanical strength of the materials tested. The results demonstrate that the tensile strength of a 3-D printed specimen depends largely on the mass of the specimen, which provides a means to estimate the strength of 3-D printed components. Then this information is used to evaluate …

High Resolution Time-Of-Arrival Ranging Of Wireless Sensor Nodes In Non-Homogenous Environments, Mohsen Jamalabdollahi
High Resolution Time-Of-Arrival Ranging Of Wireless Sensor Nodes In Non-Homogenous Environments, Mohsen Jamalabdollahi
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have emerging applications in homogeneous environments such as free space. In addition, WSNs are finding new applications in non-homogeneous (NH) media. All referred applications entail location information of measured data or observed event. Localization in WSNs is considered as the leading remedy, which refers to the procedure of obtaining the sensor nodes relative location utilizing range measurements. Localization via Time-of-Arrival (ToA) estimation has received considerable attention because of high precision and low complexity implementation, however, the traditional techniques are not feasible in NH media due to frequency dispersion of transmitted ranging waveform.

Evaluating The Anaerobic Codigestion Potential Of Stillage And Dairy Manure In A Tubular Digester, Brad J. Weiss
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Evaluations of the anaerobic treatment of sugarcane stillage and dairy manure in a low cost tubular digester were performed in small scale batch experiments and using mathematical simulations. A local sensitivity analysis of the model was performed, and key input parameters were adjusted until the predicted COD removal was consistent with data obtained using two full-scale digesters. Simulations were performed to evaluate COD removal and biogas production for nine different mixtures of stillage and manure at four different temperatures ranging from 15˚C to 30˚C. Digestion of stillage alone was not effective, but when codigested with 20% or more manure, COD …

Use Of Lidar In The Design Of Grassed Waterways: Case Study In Agricultural Management In Oklahoma, Annette Sparks
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Before the advent of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, farm-level infrastructure for sustainable agriculture was designed using topographic maps. LiDAR is a remote sensing method whereby reflected laser pulses are measured to generate high-resolution 3D images of the terrain. This report compares these two methods in the design of grassed waterways for flood drainage and evaluates how the quantitative difference between the two methods can affect the overall hydrologic design. The benefits of LiDAR are expected to be higher accuracy and precision in design, as well as greater reproducibility or consistency, regardless of the designer. To carry out this …

Widespread adoption of lab-on-a-chip technologies may be encouraged by the development of methods and devices that require minimal investment and expertise. Here we describe a type of device that makes exclusive use of consumer-grade components and equipment. The devices consist of as little as three layers of a polymer film, with microchannels shaped by an inexpensive craft cutter, and sealed by thermal lamination. Fabrication time is in the order of minutes, and the method does not require any prior training. To showcase the properties and demonstrate the versatility of the devices, we describe their use to generate fully biocompatible lipid-based …

Locality-Aware Dynamic Task Graph Scheduling, Jordyn Maglalang, Sriram Krishnamoorthy, Kunal Agrawal
Locality-Aware Dynamic Task Graph Scheduling, Jordyn Maglalang, Sriram Krishnamoorthy, Kunal Agrawal
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Dynamic task graph schedulers automatically balance work across processor cores by scheduling tasks among available threads while preserving dependences. In this paper, we design NabbitC, a provably efficient dynamic task graph scheduler that accounts for data locality on NUMA systems. NabbitC allows users to assign a color to each task representing the location (e.g., a processor core) that has the most efficient access to data needed during that node’s execution. NabbitC then automatically adjusts the scheduling so as to preferentially execute each node at the location that matches its color—leading to better locality because the node is likely to make …

Articles
This paper reports a multi-step procedure to fabricate a novel corrosion resistant and biocompatible PLGA-silane coating on the magnesium (Mg) alloy AZ31. The first step involves alkaline passivation followed by dip coating in a methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) mixture to produce a cross-linked siloxane coating. The second step is to impart an amine functionalization to the silane modified surface by using 3-aminopropyl-triethoxy silane (APTES) for promoting adhesion of the acid terminated poly-(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) as a final coating step. Static contact angle measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed the successful assembly of coatings on …

This experimental study explore the reverse-selective potential of RTIL based membranes by lowering the solubility of the non-condensing gases like N2 and CH4. It explored reverse-selectivity by measuring the permeance of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, methane, propylene, propane, 1-butene, and butane in supported ionic liquid membranes (SILM). Particular attention was given to the reverse-selective behavior in the propane/methane and propane/nitrogen separations. For this purpose, a series of experiments were conducted in a batch gas permeance system. The permeance of the above-mentioned gases was obtained using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the support and [emim][Tf2N], [emim][BF4], [emim][TfO], [emim][DCA], [emim][SCN], and [bmim][NO3] as immobilized …
Validation Of Integrated Coast-Ocean Model Cche2d-Coast And Development Of Wind Model, Afshin Gazerzadeh
Validation Of Integrated Coast-Ocean Model Cche2d-Coast And Development Of Wind Model, Afshin Gazerzadeh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The eastern and southern coastlines of the United States are two of the most cyclone-prone areas of the world. The effects of tropical cyclones vary mainly depending on wind intensity and geological features of the coast that it is crossing. Higher winds potentially generate higher storm surges and consequently larger floods occur along the coastlines. Therefore, it is critical to accurately predict winds, storm surge, and waves associated with a hurricane. In the present study, an integrated coastal and ocean process model, CCHE2D-Coast, is validated by assessing the model’s capabilities in simulating coast-ocean circulations driven by the astronomical tides on …

Field Use Of An Acoustic Surrogate System To Monitor Gravel Bed Load Flux, Jarrod Grant Bullen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There has long been an interest in monitoring the movement of large particle sediments traveling through fast-moving streams and rivers. However, there have been numerous challenges concerning the methodology best suited to collect these data. Many studies have been done to alleviate this problem, both through physical and surrogate methods. Physical methods include bed load traps that provide data over a specific time frame, but the fluctuation of sediment can change drastically over hours; thus, bed load traps are unable to provide a reliable predictive model. Since studies have shown a relationship between acoustic energy and particle impacts, the field …

Reconstructing Lithofacies Of The Norphlet Formation (Jurassic) As Potential Exploration Targets: Little Cedar Creek And Brooklyn Fields, Southwest Alabama, Catherine E. Henry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Norphlet Formation is a Jurassic-aged siliciclastic unit located across the southeastern United States and offshore Gulf of Mexico. The eolian dune sands present in the Norphlet Formation serve as oil and gas reservoirs, making the formation of particular interest to oil and gas companies. Stable Appalachian ridges are the source of the Norphlet Formation, however deposition is related to complex faults and structures resulting from movement of the Louann Salt. Erosion of the ancestral Appalachian Mountains resulted in the deposition of four main lithofacies: basal shales, conglomerates and conglomeratic sandstones, the Denkman Sandstone member, and a redbed succession. Additionally, …

Computation Aided Design Of Multicomponent Refractory Alloys With A Focus On Mechanical Properties, Paul Daniel Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Quantum mechanical calculations paired with exponential growth in computer processing speed has created a paradigm shift in materials discovery. Simulations can be carried out to accurately predict structure-composition-property relationships of novel systems. This work focuses on calculating elastic properties of high entropy alloys, a new class of alloys that are built from 4+ elements in equi-atomic proportion. These alloys often exhibit simple microstructures and each constituent element contributes its properties to the overall bulk properties of the amalgamated material. This "cocktail" effect has led to the discovery of many alloys which could drive technical advances in the future. Elastic properties …

Electropermeabilization of cell membranes by micro- and nanosecond-duration stimuli has been studied extensively, whereas effects of picosecond electric pulses (psEP) remain essentially unexplored. We utilized whole-cell patch clamp and Di-8-ANEPPS voltage-sensitive dye measurements to characterize plasma membrane effects of 500 ps stimuli in rat hippocampal neurons (RHN), NG108, and CHO cells. Even a single 500-ps pulse at 190kV/cm increased membrane conductance and depolarized cells. These effects were augmented by applying brief psEP bursts (5–125 pulses), whereas the rate of pulse delivery (8Hz–1kHz) played little role. psEP-treated cells displayed large inward current at negative membrane potentials but modest or no conductance …
Statistical Scaling Of Turbulent Surface Pressure In The Atmospheric Boundary Layer, Gregory William Lyons
Statistical Scaling Of Turbulent Surface Pressure In The Atmospheric Boundary Layer, Gregory William Lyons
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Turbulence in the atmosphere produces fluctuations in static pressure through a variety of mechanisms. These fluctuations are of interest both to atmospheric scientists, as a fluid dynamic property, and to acousticians, as a source of wind noise. At the ground surface, previous work has found the dominant source of pressure fluctuations to be an interaction of the turbulent vertical velocity with the shear rate in the mean wind. In this work, the existing theoretical framework was extended to investigate the effects of atmospheric stability, shear anisotropy, and different turbulence models. A rapid-distortion model was introduced and compared with the existing …
