Grounding Robot Motion In Natural Language And Visual Perception, Scott Alan Bronikowski

Open Access Dissertations

The current state of the art in military and first responder ground robots involves heavy physical and cognitive burdens on the human operator while taking little to no advantage of the potential autonomy of robotic technology. The robots currently in use are rugged remote-controlled vehicles. Their interaction modalities, usually utilizing a game controller connected to a computer, require a dedicated operator who has limited capacity for other tasks.

I present research which aims to ease these burdens by incorporating multiple modes of robotic sensing into a system which allows humans to interact with robots through a natural-language interface. I conduct …

Development And Evaluation Of A Watershed-Scale Hybrid Hydrologic Model, Younghyun Cho Apr 2016

Development And Evaluation Of A Watershed-Scale Hybrid Hydrologic Model, Younghyun Cho

Open Access Dissertations

A watershed-scale hybrid hydrologic model (Distributed-Clark), which is a lumped conceptual and distributed feature model, was developed to predict spatially distributed short- and long-term rainfall runoff generation and routing using relatively simple methodologies and state-of-the-art spatial data in a GIS environment. In Distributed-Clark, spatially distributed excess rainfall estimated with the SCS curve number method and a GIS-based set of separated unit hydrographs (spatially distributed unit hydrograph) are utilized to calculate a direct runoff flow hydrograph, and time-varied SCS CN values and conditional unit hydrograph approach for different runoff depth-based flow convolution are also used to compute long-term rainfall-runoff flow hydrographs. …

In The Face Of Anticipation: Decision Making Under Visible Uncertainty As Present In The Safest-With-Sight Problem, Bryan A. Knowles Apr 2016

In The Face Of Anticipation: Decision Making Under Visible Uncertainty As Present In The Safest-With-Sight Problem, Bryan A. Knowles

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Pathfinding, as a process of selecting a fixed route, has long been studied in

Computer Science and Mathematics. Decision making, as a similar, but intrinsically different, process of determining a control policy, is much less studied. Here, I propose a problem that appears to be of the first class, which would suggest that it is easily solvable with a modern machine, but that would be too easy, it turns out. By allowing a pathfinding to anticipate and respond to information, without setting restrictions

on the \structure" of this anticipation, selecting the \best step" appears to be an intractable problem.

After …

Pedestrian Detection Using Basic Polyline: A Geometric Framework For Pedestrian Detection, Liang Gongbo

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Pedestrian detection has been an active research area for computer vision in recently years. It has many applications that could improve our lives, such as video surveillance security, auto-driving assistance systems, etc. The approaches of pedestrian detection could be roughly categorized into two categories, shape-based approaches and appearance-based approaches. In the literature, most of approaches are appearance-based. Shape-based approaches are usually integrated with an appearance-based approach to speed up a detection process.

In this thesis, I propose a shape-based pedestrian detection framework using the geometric features of human to detect pedestrians. This framework includes three main steps. Give a static …

Optimization-Based Interactive Segmentation Interface For Multiregion Problems., John S H Baxter, Martin Rajchl, Terry M Peters, Elvis C S Chen

Robarts Imaging Publications

Interactive segmentation is becoming of increasing interest to the medical imaging community in that it combines the positive aspects of both manual and automated segmentation. However, general-purpose tools have been lacking in terms of segmenting multiple regions simultaneously with a high degree of coupling between groups of labels. Hierarchical max-flow segmentation has taken advantage of this coupling for individual applications, but until recently, these algorithms were constrained to a particular hierarchy and could not be considered general-purpose. In a generalized form, the hierarchy for any given segmentation problem is specified in run-time, allowing different hierarchies to be quickly explored. We …

Detecting And Screening Of The Prostate Cancer By Using An Optical Nanoporous Thin-Film Sensor, Salah Eldeen Mofleh Alzghoul Apr 2016

Detecting And Screening Of The Prostate Cancer By Using An Optical Nanoporous Thin-Film Sensor, Salah Eldeen Mofleh Alzghoul

Doctoral Dissertations

Prostate cancer (PC) affects elderly men more than young men. The currently used cancer biomarker, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), highly overestimates PC population. Men with high PSA levels often have to go through unnecessary, but physically painful, and expensive prosesses, such as prostate biopsies. Finding a prostate cancer marker that is produced selectively by cancer, but not by normal prostate cells will increase the reliability of PC test. In 2006, our collaborator (Dr. Girish Shah) discovered a novel protein, referred as neuroendocrine marker (NEM), secreted only by malignant prostate cells and released in blood circulation.

To examine whether the combined NEM-PSA …

Micro- And Nanoparticulates For Dna Vaccine Delivery, Eric Farris, Deborah M. Brown, Amanda Ramer-Tait, Angela K. Pannier

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

DNA vaccination has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional protein-based vaccines for the induction of protective immune responses. DNA vaccines offer several advantages over traditional vaccines, including increased stability, rapid and inexpensive production, and flexibility to produce vaccines for a wide variety of infectious diseases. However, the immunogenicity of DNA vaccines delivered as naked plasmid DNA is often weak due to degradation of the DNA by nucleases and inefficient delivery to immune cells. Therefore, biomaterial-based delivery systems based on micro- and nanoparticles that encapsulate plasmid DNA represent the most promising strategy for DNA vaccine delivery. Microparticulate delivery systems allow …

Hyaluronic Acid-Conjugated Liposome Nanoparticles For Targeted Delivery To Cd44 Overexpressing Glioblastoma Cells, Stephen L. Hayward, Christina L. Wilson, Srivatsan Kidambi

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is a highly prevalent and deadly brain malignancy characterized by poor prognosis and restricted disease management potential. Despite the success of nanocarrier systems to improve drug/gene therapy for cancer, active targeting specificity remains a major hurdle for GBM. Additionally, since the brain is a multi-cell type organ, there is a critical need to develop an approach to distinguish between GBM cells and healthy brain cells for safe and successful treatment. In this report, we have incorporated hyaluronic acid (HA) as an active targeting ligand for GBM. To do so, we employed HA conjugated liposomes (HALNPs) to study …

Rejuvenator is also a type of treatment that penetrates into the asphalt pavement and restores its original viscoelastic properties. Similarly, like fog seal, rejuvenators can be sprayed on top of an asphalt pavement surface. The use of rejuvenators has grown rapidly in the past decade. However, little is known about the actual effectiveness …

Immobilization Of Cellulase For Large Scale Reactors To Reduce Cellulosic Ethanol Cost, Dezhi Zhang Apr 2016

Immobilization Of Cellulase For Large Scale Reactors To Reduce Cellulosic Ethanol Cost, Dezhi Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Cellulosic ethanol is an alternative renewable energy source. Cellulase used in the production of cellulosic ethanol is very expensive. The difficulty in separating cellulase from the cellulose solution after the hydrolysis process limits the reusability of the cellulase, which highly precludes the scales of this application because of the high cost of the enzyme. Immobilization of cellulase provides a promising approach to allow the enzyme to be recycled, thus reducing the production cost. This research focused on immobilizing cellulase for reuse to reduce the cellulosic ethanol cost.

Four immobilization techniques were explored for the immobilization of cellulase on four different …

Novel Nitroxyl Radical Synthesis, Max Meier Apr 2016

Novel Nitroxyl Radical Synthesis, Max Meier

UCARE: Research Products

The purpose of this research is to synthesize a novel compound, 2,2,6,6-dispirocyclobutylpiperidine- 4-one (P), for use as an oxidation reactant to form the corresponding nitroxyl radical. This is to be conducted using a reliable method for a variety of 2,2,6,6-tetrasubstituted piperidine-4-one compounds as detailed by Sakai et al. [3]. Sakai uses a variety of 6-member cyclic ketones, which are quite stable. It was attempted to use 4-member cyclic ketones to research the effectiveness of 2,6-substitution using a less stable carbonyl compound. Cyclobutanone and 3-oxycetanone were used as candidates for this reaction. Both are delicate, expensive ketones.

Growth Of Ws2 Thin Photovoltaic Films, Matthew J. Hilfiker, Aaron Ediger, Natale Lanno

UCARE: Research Products

Through research for a material that is low cost, earth abundant, and highly efficient, Tungsten Sulfide (WS2) has been identified as a promising solution. From literature, it has been shown that WS2 possesses a band gap of 1.9 eV, which is ideal for a top layer heterostructure cell. While this is a favorable value, other properties needed to understand its value as a photovoltaic material are unknown. Through research, WS2 films will be grown through a sputtering deposition process and electrical characterization measurements will be performed to study these missing properties.

Analysis Of Breath-Holding Index As An Assessment Of Cerebrovascular Reactivity, Allison P. Porter, Madison Burger, Mohammed Alwatban, Benjamin Hage, Greg Bashford

UCARE: Research Products

Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) is a key factor in regulating blood flow into the brain, and a marker for vascular disease. If the brain's regulatory system is not working, a patient may be in serious trouble. Testing of CVR is one method of assessing the brain's regulatory capabilities. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) is one tool to measure CVR. In this method, carbon dioxide in the blood is transiently increased (such as with the holding of breath), and the resulting blood flow in the brain is measured. In this study, we are going to measure the variability of the breathholding index.

Within …
