Automated Synthetic Scene Generation, Ryan N. Givens Sep 2014

Automated Synthetic Scene Generation, Ryan N. Givens

Theses and Dissertations

First principles, physics-based models help organizations developing new remote sensing instruments anticipate sensor performance by enabling the ability to create synthetic imagery for proposed sensor before a sensor is built. One of the largest challenges in modeling realistic synthetic imagery, however, is generating the spectrally attributed, three-dimensional scenes on which the models are based in a timely and affordable fashion. Additionally, manual and semi-automated approaches to synthetic scene construction which rely on spectral libraries may not adequately capture the spectral variability of real-world sites especially when the libraries consist of measurements made in other locations or in a lab. This …

Adaptive Control Of An Active Magnetic Bearing With External Disturbance, Lili Dong, Silu You Sep 2014

Adaptive Control Of An Active Magnetic Bearing With External Disturbance, Lili Dong, Silu You

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Adaptive back stepping control (ABC) is originally applied to a linearized model of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) system. Our control goal is to regulate the deviation of the magnetic bearing from its equilibrium position in the presence of an external disturbance and system uncertainties. Two types of ABC methods are developed on the AMB system. One is based on full state feedback, for which displacement, velocity, and current states are assumed available. The other one is adaptive observer based back stepping controller (AOBC) where only displacement output is measurable. An observer is designed for AOBC to estimate velocity and …

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane Sep 2014

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fluid diodes are fluidic devices that enhance fluid flow in a particular direction while inhibiting it in the opposite direction without the use of moving parts. This is accomplished through the use of nozzle shaped geometry on one side of the diode, and cusp shaped geometry on the opposing side. Fluid meets very little resistance as is travels though the nozzle side of the diode. The cusps on the other side of the diode reduce the effective flow area, thereby inhibiting flow. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a fluid diode installed in a reconstructed …

Generalized Approach Of Stator Shifting In Interior Permanent-Magnet Machines Equipped With Fractional-Slot Concentrated Windings, Patel B. Reddy, Kum-Kang Huh, Ayman M. El-Refaie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Electrical drive systems, which include electrical machines and power electronics, are a key enabling technology for advanced vehicle propulsion systems that reduce the petroleum dependence of the ground transportation sector. To have significant effect, electric drive technologies must be economical in terms of cost, weight, and size while meeting performance and reliability expectations. Interior permanent magnet machines with fractional-slot concentrated windings have been shown to be good candidates for hybrid traction applications. One of the key challenges is the additional stator magnetomotive force sub- and superharmonic components that lead to higher losses in the rotor as well as saturation effects. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Associating faces appearing in Web videos with names presented in the surrounding context is an important task in many applications. However, the problem is not well investigated particularly under large-scale realistic scenario, mainly due to the scarcity of dataset constructed in such circumstance. In this paper, we introduce a Web video dataset of celebrities, named WebV-Cele, for name-face association. The dataset consists of 75 073 Internet videos of over 4 000 hours, covering 2 427 celebrities and 649 001 faces. This is, to our knowledge, the most comprehensive dataset for this problem. We describe the details of dataset construction, discuss …

Entrepreneurship In Capstone Design: Has The Pendulum Swung Too Far?, Jay R. Goldberg

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The author supports entrepreneurial education for all interested students, but not at the expense of design education. He thinks we should develop business literacy among all of our students to prepare them for work in start-ups and established medical device companies, and provide opportunities for interested students to add entrepreneurial literacy to better prepare them to create new companies, either upon graduation or later in their careers. Capstone design courses should focus on helping students develop solid design skills and providing opportunities to apply the analytical tools learned in previous courses. Students should be encouraged, not required, to consider commercializing …

On Uav Robust Nonlinear Control In Presence Of Parametric Uncertainties, Vladimir V. Golubev, William Mackunis Sep 2014

On Uav Robust Nonlinear Control In Presence Of Parametric Uncertainties, Vladimir V. Golubev, William Mackunis

Publications

We examine a new robust nonlinear flight control technology that employs an array of synthetic-jet micro-actuators embedded in UAV wing design in order to completely eliminate moving parts (such as ailerons) thus greatly enhancing maneuverability required for small fixed-wing air vehicles operating, e.g., in tight urban environments. Estimated fast response times are critical in mitigating gust effects while greatly improving flight stability and control. The new controller design is particularly advantageous for high levels of uncertainty and nonlinearity present both in the unsteady flowpath environment and in the embedded actuator’s response. The current work focuses on a benchmark case of …

Vibration Based Planetary Gear Analysis And Damage Detection, Rene Sawatzky Sep 2014

Vibration Based Planetary Gear Analysis And Damage Detection, Rene Sawatzky

Master's Theses

With this thesis the research at the engineering department is continued, based on previous thesis projects. These projects were considering the possibility of simulation gears with rigid bodies. After researches with different emphasizes on the rigid body simulation, the gained knowledge showed limitations of the rigid body model. Gear failures are very diverse and the actual simulation technique could not represent all necessary failure modes that can occur. That led to this thesis as a research project to find a way to detect and analyze the failure modes that cannot be considered with the current rigid body approach. With the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, a robust parametric model of a brushless permanent magnet machine with fractional-slot concentrated windings, which was developed for automated design optimization is presented. A computationally efficient finite-element analysis method was employed to estimate the dq-axes inductances, the induced voltage and torque ripple waveforms, and losses of the machine. A method for minimum effort calculation of the torque angle corresponding to the maximum torque per ampere load condition was developed. A differential evolution algorithm was implemented for the global design optimization with two concurrent objectives of minimum losses and minimum material cost. An engineering decision process based on …

Evaluation Of Environmental Materials As Thermal Witness Materials, Shashank Vummidi Lakshman Aug 2014

Evaluation Of Environmental Materials As Thermal Witness Materials, Shashank Vummidi Lakshman

Dissertations

New and complex energetic materials are under development for achieving tunable pyrotechnical events for applications such as neutralization of biological weapons, bunker busters and many others. To guide the development of hybrid materials, the pyrotechnical environment they produce requires higher degree of characterization i.e. good description of spatial and temporal temperature distribution.

Temperature measurements in pyrotechnical events are especially challenging, where the temperature of the environment rises more than 2000 K on microseconds to few milliseconds time scale. These environments produce high thermal stress where traditional sensors like thermocouples, optical pyrometers struggle to describe the dynamic changes in the environment. …

Novel Scrubbing Systems For Post-Combustion Co2 Capture And Recovery, Tripura Mulukutla Aug 2014

Novel Scrubbing Systems For Post-Combustion Co2 Capture And Recovery, Tripura Mulukutla

Dissertations

Power plant emissions of flue gas releases considerable CO2 to the atmosphere; CO2 is considered to be the main contributor to global warming. Several gas absorption techniques are being investigated to reduce the capital and operating costs for CO2 capture from post-combustion flue gas. Conventional method of CO2 capture by an aqueous solution of monoethanolamine (MEA) and its subsequent stripping in a separate tower with steam at 120°C, is a highly energy intensive process. The low partial pressure of CO2 in the flue gas inhibits the application of CO2-selective membranes unless methods are …

Ignition Mechanism In Nanocomposites Thermites, Rayon Williams Aug 2014

Ignition Mechanism In Nanocomposites Thermites, Rayon Williams

Dissertations

Nanocomposite thermites (n-thermites) have been actively investigated for a wide range of potential applications including propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnics. There have been several recent efforts aimed at understanding ignition mechanisms of nanocomposite reactive materials. Although significant progress has been made, ignition mechanisms remain elusive. At the same time, a robust ignition model is required to incorporate these materials in practical energetic formulations. A challenge of this effort is to describe the mechanisms of ignition of n-thermites prepared by Arrested Reactive Milling (ARM) with different stimuli, including heat, spark and impact and also develop a multi-step kinetic model describing different processes …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Metal-Based Reactive Powders, Yasmine Aly Aug 2014

Synthesis And Characterization Of Metal-Based Reactive Powders, Yasmine Aly

Dissertations

Aluminum added to propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnics, boosts their energy density. Different approaches were investigated that could shorten aluminum ignition delays, increase combustion rates, and decrease the tendency of aluminum droplets to agglomerate. Here, Al-based reactive, mechanically milled materials are prepared and characterized.

For powders with Fe, Ni, or Zn additives, the particles consist of an aluminum matrix and inclusions of Fe, Ni, or Zn comprising 10 at % of the bulk composition. For additives of Ni and Zn, only short milling times can be used to prepare composites; intermetallic phases form at longer milling times. Thermogravimetric analysis shows selective …

The Photophysics Properties Of Lanthanide Luminescent Probes, Ke Li Aug 2014

The Photophysics Properties Of Lanthanide Luminescent Probes, Ke Li

Theses

A detailed study of the luminescence quantum yield, lifetimes and the number of water molecules coordinated to lanthanide luminescent probes based on biphenylyl-7-amino-4- methyl-2(1H)-quinolinon (Bi-cs124) derivatives have been carried out using a time- resolved fluorescence assay (TRFA). Bi-cs124 was conbined with different chelating agents, specifically diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA), ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA), and 3,6,9,12-Tetrakis carboxymethyl)-3,6,9,12-tetraazatetradecane-1,14-dioic acid (TTHA). The results indicate that Bi-cs 124-TTHA has a longest lifetime and smallest number of coordinated water molecules because TTHA has larger number of chelating groups. The dependence of the luminescence lifetimes on the probes concentrations …

Gaussian Beam Scattering From A Deterministic Rough Metal Surface, Qi Wang Aug 2014

Gaussian Beam Scattering From A Deterministic Rough Metal Surface, Qi Wang

Theses

A full-wave theory of plane wave scattering from rough surfaces called the Correction Current (CC) method was recently developed for the two-dimensional scatter problem that have a one-dimensional roughness profile. The method involves a primary field and radiation modes that are plane-wave-type fields that satisfy the boundary conditions at the rough surface. These fields do not satisfy Maxwell's source free equations, but they are forced to satisfy Maxwell's equations with distributed sources upon the introduction of fictitious volume currents distributions which correct for the field errors. Additionally, current sheet distributions are introduced which generate a radiation modal field that satisfies …

Electrochemical And Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Studies Of Benzimidazole On Nickel Electrode, Ping-Jie Wei, Ya-Xian Yuan, Min-Min Xu, Jian-Lin Yao, Ren-Ao Gu

Journal of Electrochemistry

By measuring cyclic voltammograms and polarization curves, the inhibition effects of benzimidazole (BMIH) concentration in acetonitrile system on a nickel electrode were investigated. It was found that the oxidation and the corrosion potentials shifted positively, and the oxidation current decreased with the increase in the concentration of BIMH. Potential dependent adsorption and film formation behavior of BMIH on the nickel electrode were investigated by in situ SERS spectroscopy. With the potential moving from negative direction to positive direction, the complexes made of BIMH and nickel were formed, preventing the nickel electrode from corrosion. In addition, the 0.001 mol·L-1 of …

Synthesis Of Silver Nanoparticles Supported On Graphene Quantum Dots For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Jian Ju, Wei Chen Aug 2014

Synthesis Of Silver Nanoparticles Supported On Graphene Quantum Dots For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Jian Ju, Wei Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Silver-based catalysts have been extensively investigated as the platinum substituted catalysts due to their high catalytic efficiency, low cost and long-term durability. In this study, the surfactant-free silver nanoparticles supported on graphene quantum dots were synthesized through a facile approach without addition of any other protecting ligands and reducing agents. The “surface-clean” silver nanoparticles had remarkable electrocatalytic performance towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with the most efficient four-electron transfer process. Compared with commercial Pt/C catalyst, the hybrid nanoparticles showed comparable catalytic performance for ORR but much higher tolerance to methanol. Such silver nanoparticles supported on graphene quantum dots may have …

Formalization Of Matrix Theory In Hol4, Zhiping Shi, Yan Zhang, Zhenke Liu, Xinan Kang, Yong Guan, Jie Zhang, Xiaoyu Song

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Matrix theory plays an important role in modeling linear systems in engineering and science. To model and analyze the intricate behavior of complex systems, it is imperative to formalize matrix theory in a metalogic setting. This paper presents the higherorder logic (HOL) formalization of the vector space and matrix theory in the HOL4 theorem proving system. Formalized theories include formal definitions of real vectors and matrices, algebraic properties, and determinants, which are verified in HOL4. Two case studies, modeling and verifying composite two-port networks and state transfer equations, are presented to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of our work.

Room Temperature Ionic Liquid Templated Meso-Macroporous Material By Self-Assembled Giant Gold Nanoparticles And Its Enhancement On The Direct Electrochemistry Of Cytochrome C, Pei Li, Dong-Ping Zhan, Yuan-Hua Shao

Journal of Electrochemistry

Room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) is used as a soft-template to organize a meso-macroporous material constructed by self-assembled giant gold nanoparticles which are capped by L-cysteine. First, L-cysteine capped gold nanoparticles can self-assembly to form nanowires and sub-micrometer spherical giant particles due to the static interaction and/or the condensation reaction between the carboxyl and amino groups at the outer terminal of the ligand. Second, the spherical assembled particles can form a quasi-solid gel when grinding with a hydrophobic RTIL, 1-octyl-3-metyllimidazolium hexafluorophosphate. Finally, when the composite gel is coated on a glassy carbon electrode and then polarized by using cyclic voltammetry …

Comparative Assessment Of Diverse Strategies For Malaria Vector Population Control Based On Measured Rates At Which Mosquitoes Utilize Targeted Resource Subsets, Gerry F. Comparative Assessment Of Diverse Strategies For Malaria Vector Population Control Based On Measured Rates At Which Mosquitoes Utilize Targeted Resource Subsets, Gerry F. Killeen, Samson Sifael Kiware, Aklilu Seyoum, John E. Gimnig, George Corliss, Jennifer Stevenson, Christopher J. Drakeley, Nakul Chitnis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Eliminating malaria requires vector control interventions that dramatically reduce adult mosquito population densities and survival rates. Indoor applications of insecticidal nets and sprays are effective against an important minority of mosquito species that rely heavily upon human blood and habitations for survival. However, complementary approaches are needed to tackle a broader diversity of less human-specialized vectors by killing them at other resource targets.

Methods

Impacts of strategies that target insecticides to humans or animals can be rationalized in terms of biological coverage of blood resources, quantified as proportional coverage of all blood resources mosquito vectors utilize. Here, this concept …

In-Situ Afm Force Curve Investigations On Layered Structures Of Au(111)-Ionic Liquid Interfaces And Temperature Dependence, Xiao Zhang, Yun-Xin Zhong, Jia-Wei Yan, Bing-Wei Mao

Journal of Electrochemistry

By utilizing in-situ AFM force curve measurements systematic investigations have been carried out on Au(111)-ionic liquid interface in BMIPF6 and OMIPF6 of imidazolium-based ionic liquids with different lengths of alkyl side chains. The temperature dependence of the number, thickness and stability of the layered structures of each system are studied by performing AFM force curve measurements at potentials far negative of the PZC. The layered structures at Au (111)/BMIPF6 interface are composed of two charged interior layers and two neutral exterior layers at -1.0 V, while those at Au (111)/OMIPF6 interface only one charged interior layer …

Cyclic Voltammetric Studies In Adsorption Of Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (Ctab) On Au(111) Electrode, Ling Chen, Chang-Deng Xu, Jin-Yu Ye, Chun-Hua Zhen, Shi-Gang Sun Aug 2014

Cyclic Voltammetric Studies In Adsorption Of Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (Ctab) On Au(111) Electrode, Ling Chen, Chang-Deng Xu, Jin-Yu Ye, Chun-Hua Zhen, Shi-Gang Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

Adsorption of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) on Au(111) electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The results demonstrate that the adsorption of CTAB on Au(111) yields particular CV features. Both the adsorption of CTA+ and the phase change of the surfactant film are surface structure selective. Two pairs of stable sharp peaks that depend on halide species appear upon the adsorption of cationic surfactant on Au(111) electrode. The relationship between the peak current density and the scan rate indicates that the electron transfer reaction was controlled by diffusion process. These CV features are observed for the first time, and reflect …

Electrochemical Catalysis: A Dft Study, Li Li, Zi-Dong Wei Aug 2014

Electrochemical Catalysis: A Dft Study, Li Li, Zi-Dong Wei

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this review, we focus on achievements in electro-catalysis based on the density function theory study. The relationships among the electrode potential, electronic structure of catalysts and electro-catalytic activity are summarized in three parts: the adsorption and desorption of species, electron transfer, and stability of catalysts. The electrode potential and the electronic structure (d-band center or Fermi (HOMO) energy) of catalysts significantly influence the formation, adsorption and desorption of surface species on electrode. The electro-catalytic activity can be improved by modulating the electrode potential and electronic structure of catalysts.

High Sensitive Detection Of Cd(Ii) And Pb(Ii) Based On Antimony-Film Covered Pencil Core Electrodes, Shan Chen, Zhao-Yan Zheng, Yi-Min Fang, Li-Qing Zheng, Jian-Jun Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, a pencil core was used as the substrate for an antimony-film electrode for simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). With the deposition time of 180 s, the low limit of detection (LOD) for the electrode was determined to be 0.075·g?L-1 for Cd(II), while 0.13·g·L-1 for Pb(II) with good reproducibility in low pH solutions (pH = 2). The results show a much lower LOD than that of bismuth-film pencil core electrode. Finally, this antimony-film electrode was successfully applied to determine Cd(II) and Pb(II) in tap water.

A Sensitive And Label-Free Electrochemical Aptasensor Based On Signal Amplification Of Carbon Nanotubes, Chun-Yan Deng, Hui-Min Fan, Juan Xiang, Yuan-Jian Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

A label-free electrochemical sensing electrode for highly sensitive detection of adenosine was constructed based on the signal amplification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The change in the interfacial feature of the modified electrode was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Using [Ru(NH3)6]3+ as the signaling moiety, adenosine with concentrations as low as 0.027 nmol·L-1 can be selectively detected. Additionally, the fabrication of this present aptasensor was simple, time-saving and cost-effective. Compared with other reported aptasensors, the proposed aptasensor had advantages of excellent sensitivity, selectivity and simplicity, which plays a potential role in development of aptasensor.
