Remote Beehive Monitoring Using Acoustic Signals, Amro Qandour, Iftekhar Ahmad, Daryoush Habibi, Mark Leppard
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Recent developments in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have led to their use in remote data acquisition and automatic data analysis applications, which have proven to be an invaluable tool in a diverse range of fields including biosecurity. Further indications have been found that honeybee health can be monitored and determined through the use of acoustic analysis. In this paper, we present a system that has the ability to remotely detect the presence of pest infestation on a colony of honeybees by comparing the acoustic fingerprint of a hive to a fingerprint of known status. This will aid the goals of …

Characterizing The Resolvability Of Real Superluminescent Diode Sources For Application To Optical Coherence Tomography Using A Low Coherence Interferometry Model, Paul V. Jansz, Steven Richardson, Graham Wild, Steven Hinckley
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The axial resolution is a critical parameter in determining whether optical coherent tomography (OCT) can be used to resolve specific features in a sample image. Typically, measures of resolution have been attributed to the light source characteristics only, including the coherence length and the point spread function (PSF) width of the OCT light sources. The need to cost effectively visualize the generated PSF and OCT cross-correlated interferogram (A-scan) using many OCT light sources have led to the extrinsic evolution of the OCT simulation model presented. This research indicated that empirical resolution in vivo, as well as depending on the light …

Recent Developments In R.F. Magnetron Sputtered Thin Films For Ph Sensing Applications - An Overview, Devendra Maurya, Ali Sardarinejad, Kamal Alameh
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
pH sensors are widely used in chemical and biological applications. Metal oxides-based pH sensors have many attractive features including insolubility, stability, mechanical strength, electrocatalyst and manufacturing technology. Various metal oxide thin films prepared by radio frequency (R.F.) magnetron sputtering have attractive features, including high pH sensitivity, fast response, high resolution, good stability and reversibility as well as potential for measuring pH under conditions that are not favourable for the commonly used glass electrodes-based pH sensors. In addition, thin film pH sensors prepared by R.F. magnetron sputtering offer many advantages, such as ease of packaging, low cost through the use of …

Bulk Tib2-Based Ceramic Composites With Improved Mechanical Property Using Fe-Ni-Ti-Al As A Sintering Aid, Chao Yang, Hao Guo, Mo Daguang, Shengguan Qu, Xiaoqiang Li, Weiwen Zhang, Laichang Zhang
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The densification behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties of bulk TiB2-based ceramic composites, fabricated using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique with elements of (Fe–Ni–Ti–Al) sinter-aid were investigated. Comparing the change of shrinkage displacement of pure TiB2 and TiB2–5 wt% (Fe–Ni–Ti–Al), the addition of elements Fe–Ni–Ti–Al into TiB2 can facilitate sintering of the TiB2 ceramics. As the sintering temperature exceeds 1300 °C, the relative density does not significantly change. Alumina particles and austenite (Fe–Ni–Ti) metallic binder distributed homogeneously in the grain boundary of TiB2 can inhibit the growth of the TiB2 grains when the sintering temperature is below 1300 °C. The …

Purpose: This paper presents a nonrigid registration method to align preoperative MRI with intraoperative MRI to compensate for brain deformation during tumor resection. This method extends traditional point-based nonrigid registration in two aspects: (1) allow the input data to be incomplete and (2) simulate the underlying deformation with a heterogeneous biomechanical model.
Methods: The method formulates the registration as a three-variable (point correspondence, deformation field, and resection region) functional minimization problem, in which point correspondence is represented by a fuzzy assign matrix; Deformation field is represented by a piecewise linear function regularized by the strain energy of a heterogeneous biomechanical …
Theoretical And Experimental Investigations To Improve The Performance Of Surface Acoustic Wave (Saw) Biosensors, Mandek Richardson
Theoretical And Experimental Investigations To Improve The Performance Of Surface Acoustic Wave (Saw) Biosensors, Mandek Richardson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this dissertation is to improve the performance of surface acoustic wave (SAW) biosensors for use in point-of-care-testing (POCT) applications. SAW biosensors have the ability to perform fast, accurate detection of an analyte in real time without the use of labels. However, the technology suffers from the inability to differentiate between specific and non-specific binding. Due to this limitation, direct testing of bodily fluids using SAW sensors to accurately determine an analyte's concentration is difficult. In addition, these sensors are challenged by the need to detect small concentrations of a biomarker that are typically required to give a …

This paper demonstrates the acquisition of advanced circuit board performance parameters from breakaway test coupons measured right at the PCB fabricator. We show how to acquire S-parameter and TDR-based measurements up to 30 GHz using robust probes and test coupon fixtures. The measurements provide pass/fail tests for process control and they provide model parameters as feedback to improve channel design. By way of example, we demonstrate measurements of several representative test coupons, perform total loss tests, such as SET2DIL, and extract design parameters that can be used to improve EDA channel models. We also demonstrate measurement and tests of impedance …

The rate of electrochemical reactions in some systems varies with the polarity of the overpotential on the working electrode, introducing diode-like behavior at the electrode/electrolyte interface. However, with repeated bipolar cycling, the electrochemical current damages the electrodes. We have connected electrochemical diodes in series with opposing polarities to reduce the diode current while charging a capacitive circuit. We have previously used this capacitive circuit arrangement to actuate aqueous droplets continuously using the electrowetting (EW) effect. In this study, the performance of electrochemical diodes under repeated voltage cycles is investigated. Aluminum and titanium electrodes in contact with three electrolyte solutions (0.1 …
