Advanced Water Vapor Lidar Detection System, Hani Elsayed-Ali Jan 2013

Advanced Water Vapor Lidar Detection System, Hani Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In the present water vapor lidar system, the detected signal is sent over long cables to a waveform digitizer in a CAMAC crate. This has the disadvantage of transmitting analog signals for a relatively long distance, which is subjected to pickup noise, leading to a decrease in the signal to noise ratio.

Generally, errors in the measurement of water vapor with the DIAL method arise from both random and systematic sources. Systematic errors in DIAL measurements are caused by both atmospheric and instrumentation effects. The selection of the on-line alexandrite laser with a narrow linewidth, suitable intensity and high spectral …

Modeling, Analysis And Control Of Voltage-Source Converter In Microgrids And Hvdc, Ling Xu Jan 2013

Modeling, Analysis And Control Of Voltage-Source Converter In Microgrids And Hvdc, Ling Xu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to carry out dynamic modeling, analysis and control for Voltage-Source Converters (VSC). Two major applications of VSC will be investigated in this dissertation: microgrid application and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) application.

In microgrid applications, VSC is used to integrate distributed energy sources such as battery and provide system functions: such as real and reactive power regulation, voltage and frequency support during islanding condition, and abnormal system condition mitigation. In HVDC applications, VSC is used to interconnect dc systems with ac systems. The functions supplied by VSC are similar to that in microgrids. However, …

Prevention And Detection Of Intrusions In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ismail Butun Jan 2013

Prevention And Detection Of Intrusions In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ismail Butun

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) continue to grow as one of the most exciting and challenging research areas of engineering. They are characterized by severely constrained computational and energy

resources and also restricted by the ad-hoc network operational

environment. They pose unique challenges, due to limited power

supplies, low transmission bandwidth, small memory sizes and limited energy. Therefore, security techniques used in traditional networks cannot be directly adopted. So, new ideas and approaches are needed, in order to increase the overall security of the network. Security applications in such resource constrained WSNs with minimum overhead provides significant challenges, and is the …

Self-Interference In Ofdm-Based Systems: Identification And Separation, Ertugrul Guvenkaya Jan 2013

Self-Interference In Ofdm-Based Systems: Identification And Separation, Ertugrul Guvenkaya

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is communication technique that is robust against multipath spread, efficient in equalization implementation, and flexible in dynamic spectrum usage. With the need of wideband signals in high data rate communications, OFDM has gained widespread attention and usage as an efficient way of implementing multicarrier communication. Despite its prominent advantages, received signal quality degrades because of inter-symbol interference (IS) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) due to insufficient guard time in multipath channels and time variance as well as hardware impairments in OFDM systems. When several of the impairments occurs simultaneously, interferences combine at the receiver side. Thus, interference …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder leading to increased bone fragility. Recent work has shown that the hierarchical structure of bone plays an important role in determining its mechanical properties and resistance to fracture. The current study represents one of the first attempts to characterize the 3D structure and composition of cortical bone in OI at the micron-scale. A total of 26 pediatric bone fragments from 18 individuals were collected during autopsy (Nc=5) or routing orthopaedic procedures (NOI=13) and imaged by microtomography with a synchrotron light source (SRµCT) for several microstructural parameters including cortical porosity …

Effects Of Openings On The Analysis And Design Of Precast Prestressed Hollow Core Slabs, Eoghan Lodge Jan 2013

Effects Of Openings On The Analysis And Design Of Precast Prestressed Hollow Core Slabs, Eoghan Lodge

Theses

Precast prestressed hollow core floors are a widely used structural element which offers increased speed of construction, reduced self-weight and many other advantages. Due to the relatively low span-to-depth ratio and the speed of construction hollow core slabs are utilised in a large number of commercial buildings. In order to carry the services to the upper floors an opening must be made within the prestressed slab. Cutting an opening in a prestressed slab has significant effects on the structural behaviour of the slab and can considerably reduce the ultimate capacity of the slab.

This paper outlines the limited available guidance …

Reinforced Concrete Deterioration Of A 100 Year Old Structure In A Marine Environment, Ross O'Donovan Jan 2013

Reinforced Concrete Deterioration Of A 100 Year Old Structure In A Marine Environment, Ross O'Donovan

Theses

The current study investigates the deterioration of a 100 year old bridge located in a harsh marine environment. Constructed in 1908 - 1909 the Mizen Head Footbridge was one of the oldest reinforced concrete bridges in Ireland. The demolition of the bridge in 2009 provided a unique opportunity to examine its service life and to extract samples for analysis and investigation. A review of the construction of the bridge, and its maintenance history are presented, with a view to analysing their influence on the behaviour of the concrete.

Reinforcement corrosion due to chloride attack was identified. A focused study indicates …

An Examination Of The Influence Of Pressure Management And Active Leakage Control In Establishing The Economic Level Of Leakage For An Urban Water Operational Area, Mark Callanan Jan 2013

An Examination Of The Influence Of Pressure Management And Active Leakage Control In Establishing The Economic Level Of Leakage For An Urban Water Operational Area, Mark Callanan

Theses

Leakage targets in Ireland are based on the Unaccounted for Water (UFW) performance indicator. This has been set out in the National Water Study published by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government (DECLG) in 2000. This leakage target performance indicator has been maintained since in all government published reports and guidelines.

The use of this performance indicator has been discouraged by the International Water Association (IWA) and its use has been discontinued by the UK water industry because it can misrepresent the true level of leakage. The IWA recommends the use of the Infrastructure Leakage Index (ILl) as …

The contributions of the dissertation are three novel control algorithms for three different classes of nonlinear systems: single-input multiple output (SIMO) …

Dynamics And Control Of Higher-Order Nonholonomic Systems, Jaime Rubio HerváS Jan 2013

Dynamics And Control Of Higher-Order Nonholonomic Systems, Jaime Rubio HerváS

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

A theoretical framework is established for the control of higher-order nonholonomic systems, defined as systems that satisfy higher-order nonintegrable constraints. A model for such systems is developed in terms of differential-algebraic equations defined on a higher-order tangent bundle. A number of control-theoretic properties such as nonintegrability, controllability, and stabilizability are presented. Higher-order nonholonomic systems are shown to be strongly accessible and, under certain conditions, small time locally controllable at any equilibrium. There are important examples of higher-order nonholonomic systems that are asymptotically stabilizable via smooth feedback, including space vehicles with multiple slosh modes and Prismatic-Prismatic-Revolute (PPR) robots moving open liquid …

Nonlinear Control For Dual Quaternion Systems, William D. Price Jan 2013

Nonlinear Control For Dual Quaternion Systems, William D. Price

The motion of rigid bodies includes three degrees of freedom (DOF) for rotation, generally referred to as roll, pitch and yaw, and 3 DOF for translation, generally described as motion along the x, y and z axis, for a total of 6 DOF. Many complex mechanical systems exhibit this type of motion, with constraints, such as complex humanoid robotic systems, multiple ground vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), multiple spacecraft vehicles, and even quantum mechanical systems. These motions historically have been analyzed independently, with separate control algorithms being developed for rotation and translation. The goal of this research is to study …

Modification Of Luas Heating And Ventilation Systems To Reduce Energy Consumption, Eogan Sweeney, James Brunton Jan 2013

Modification Of Luas Heating And Ventilation Systems To Reduce Energy Consumption, Eogan Sweeney, James Brunton

Conference Papers

Luas is a state of the art light rail system operating in Dublin Ireland. Being electrically powered, energy is a major operating cost for Luas. One component of rolling stock identified by this research that consumes a disproportional amount of energy is that of the heating and ventilation systems. The heating and ventilation systems fitted to Luas vehicles consume as much as 60% of total vehicle power, and under certain conditions can consume more than that of the traction motors. This paper explores solutions to reducing the energy consumption of Luas heating and ventilation systems. The identified software modifications and …

Automated Detection Of Incomplete Exhalation As An Indirect Detection Of Auto-Peep On Mechanically Ventilated Adults, Nyimas Arief

Theses and Dissertations

Auto-PEEP is auto positive end-expiratory pressure due to excessive amounts of alveolar gas produced by sustained recurrent incomplete exhalation. Incomplete exhalation occurs when the exhaled breath never reaches a flow rate of 0 L/min. The objective of this dissertation is to develop an automated detection system of auto-PEEP through incomplete exhalation as revealed by ventilator graphics for mechanically ventilated adults. Auto-PEEP can cause adverse effects if allowed to linger and if not quickly identified. An automated detection system will be instrumental in helping to quickly identify auto-PEEP. A computerized algorithm was developed to detect incomplete exhalation based on the following …

Automated Color Calibration Of Display Devices, Andrew Shulman Jan 2013

Automated Color Calibration Of Display Devices, Andrew Shulman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

If you compare two identical images on two different monitors, they will likely appear different. Every display device is supposed to adhere to a particular set of standards regulating the color and intensity of the image it outputs. However, in practice, very few do. Color calibration is the practice of modifying the signal path such that the colors produced more closely match reference standards. This is essential for graphics professionals who are mastering original content. They must ensure that the source material appears correct when viewed on a reference monitor. When viewed on a consumer panel, however, some error will …

Efficient Parallel Real-Time Upsampling Of Ultrasound Vectors, William D. Richard Ph.D. Jan 2013

Efficient Parallel Real-Time Upsampling Of Ultrasound Vectors, William D. Richard Ph.D.

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Upsampling is required prior to the summation step in most receive digital beamforming implementations to produce an accurate summed RF line or vector. This is true in both annular and linear array systems where receive echos are digitized first and then time delayed in the digital domain to achieve proper signal alignment. The efficient, parallel, real-time upsampling circuit presented here produces M upsampled values per ADC clock, where M is the desired upsampling factor. A circuit implementation that upsamples by a factor of M=4 is presented as an example of the more general technique.

Adding Data Parallelism To Streaming Pipelines For Throughput Optimization, Peng Li, Kunal Agrawal, Jeremy Buhler, Roger D. Chamberlain Jan 2013

Adding Data Parallelism To Streaming Pipelines For Throughput Optimization, Peng Li, Kunal Agrawal, Jeremy Buhler, Roger D. Chamberlain

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The streaming model is a popular model for writing high-throughput parallel applications. A streaming application is represented by a graph of computation stages that communicate with each other via FIFO channels. In this report, we consider the problem of mapping streaming pipelines — streaming applications where the graph is a linear chain — in order to maximize throughput. In a parallel setting, subsets of stages, called components can be mapped onto different computing resources. The through-put of an application is determined by the throughput of the slowest component. Therefore, if some stage is much slower than others, then it may …

Decision Support For Assorted Populations In Uncertain And Congested Environments, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng Jan 2013

Decision Support For Assorted Populations In Uncertain And Congested Environments, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research is motivated by large scale problems in urban transportation and labor mobility where there is congestion for resources and uncertainty in movement. In such domains, even though the individual agents do not have an identity of their own and do not explicitly interact with other agents, they effect other agents. While there has been much research in handling such implicit effects, it has primarily assumed deterministic movements of agents. We address the issue of decision support for individual agents that are identical and have involuntary movements in dynamic environments. For instance, in a taxi fleet serving a city, …

This paper is concerned with automated tuning of parameters of algorithms to handle heterogeneous and large instances. We propose an automated parameter tuning framework with the capability to provide instance-specific parameter configurations. We report preliminary results on the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) and show that our framework provides a significant improvement on solutions qualities with much smaller tuning computational time.

Regret Based Robust Solutions For Uncertain Markov Decision Processes, Asrar Ahmed, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Yossiri Adulyasak, Patrick Jaillet Jan 2013

Regret Based Robust Solutions For Uncertain Markov Decision Processes, Asrar Ahmed, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Yossiri Adulyasak, Patrick Jaillet

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we seek robust policies for uncertain Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). Most robust optimization approaches for these problems have focussed on the computation of maximin policies which maximize the value corresponding to the worst realization of the uncertainty. Recent work has proposed minimax regret as a suitable alternative to the maximin objective for robust optimization. However, existing algorithms for handling minimax regret are restricted to models with uncertainty over rewards only. We provide algorithms that employ sampling to improve across multiple dimensions: (a) Handle uncertainties over both transition and reward models; (b) Dependence of model uncertainties across state, …

Artificial Immunity-Based Induction Motor Bearing Fault Diagnosis, Hakan Çaliş, Abdülkadi̇r Çakir, Emre Dandil

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, the artificial immunity of the negative selection algorithm is used for bearing fault detection. It is implemented in MATLAB-based graphical user interface software. The developed software uses amplitudes of the vibration signal in the time and frequency domains. Outer, inner, and ball defects in the bearings of the induction motor are detected by anomaly monitoring. The time instants of the fault occurrence and fault level are determined according to the number of activated detectors. Anomaly detection in the frequency domain is implemented by monitoring the fault indicator bearing frequencies and harmonics, calculated using the bearing dimensions and …

The Vortex Effect Of Francis Turbine In Electric Power Generation, Veli̇ Türkmenoğlu Jan 2013

The Vortex Effect Of Francis Turbine In Electric Power Generation, Veli̇ Türkmenoğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, the vibration effects of a vortex that occurred in high-head Francis turbines and an alternator are examined. The vortex effect, which directly affects the efficiency and the quality of the energy, was tested at the DarÔøΩca-1 hydroelectric power plant (HPP) located in Ordu Province, Turkey. Formed by undissolved oxygen in the water, the vortex effect, which is parallel to the alternator load, causes tremendous vibration within the alternator and Francis turbine bearings. This problem, which has a direct negative effect on the alternator capacity, was solved by adding an air-admission system. In doing so, power production was …

Circulating Current Analysis Between Strands In Armature Winding Of A Turbo-Generator Using Analytical Model, Karim Abbaszadeh, Farhad Rezaee Alam Jan 2013

Circulating Current Analysis Between Strands In Armature Winding Of A Turbo-Generator Using Analytical Model, Karim Abbaszadeh, Farhad Rezaee Alam

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the circulating current analysis between strands is studied while considering the different transpositions in the active part and without considering the transposition in the end winding region. First, this analysis is done while only considering the slot region, and then the end winding region is added to the model. The model used for this analysis is a circuit model, including the resistance and inductance of the strands and their induced back-electromotive force (EMF). The back-EMF sources and inductances are calculated through a 2D finite element analysis (FEA) of the active part and a 3D FEA for the …

Composite Power System Adequacy Assessment Based On Postoptimal Analysis, Amir Safdarian, Mahmood Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Farrokh Aminifar Jan 2013

Composite Power System Adequacy Assessment Based On Postoptimal Analysis, Amir Safdarian, Mahmood Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Farrokh Aminifar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The modeling and evaluation of enormous numbers of contingencies are the most challenging impediments associated with composite power system adequacy assessment, particularly for large-scale power systems. Optimal power flow (OPF) solution, as a widely common approach, is normally employed to model and analyze each individual contingency as an independent problem. However, mathematical representations associated with diverse states are slightly different in one or a few generating units, line outages, or trivial load variations. This inherent attribute brings a promising idea to speed up the contingency evaluation procedure. In this paper, postoptimal analysis (POA), as a well-recognized technique to attack a …

A Novel Multirobot Map Fusion Strategy For Occupancy Grid Maps, Sebahatti̇n Topal, İsmet Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref Erkmen Jan 2013

A Novel Multirobot Map Fusion Strategy For Occupancy Grid Maps, Sebahatti̇n Topal, İsmet Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref Erkmen

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we consider the problem of merging partial occupancy grid environment maps, which are extracted independently by individual robot units during search and rescue (SAR) operations in icomplex disaster environments. Moreover, these maps are combined using intensity-based and area-based features without knowing the initial position and orientation of the robots. Our proposed approach handles the limitation of existing studies in the literature; for example, the limited overlapped area between partial maps of robots is enough for good merging performance and unstructured and complex partial environment maps can be merged efficiently. These abilities allow multirobot teams to efficiently generate …
