An Autonomous Channel Selection Algorithm For Wlans, Fuhu Deng Nov 2013

An Autonomous Channel Selection Algorithm For Wlans, Fuhu Deng

Doctoral

IEEE 802.11 wireless devices need to select a channel in order to transmit their packets. However, as a result of the contention-based nature of the IEEE 802.11 CSMA/CA MAC mechanism, the capacity experienced by a station is not fixed. When a station cannot win a sufficient number of transmission opportunities to satisfy its traffic load, it will become saturated. If the saturation condition persists, more and more packets are stored in the transmit queue and congestion occurs. Congestion leads to high packet delay and may ultimately result in catastrophic packet loss when the transmit queue’s capacity is exceeded. In this …

An Adaptive Packet Aggregation Algorithm (Aam) For Wireless Networks, Jianhua Deng Nov 2013

An Adaptive Packet Aggregation Algorithm (Aam) For Wireless Networks, Jianhua Deng

Doctoral

Packet aggregation algorithms are used to improve the throughput performance by combining a number of packets into a single transmission unit in order to reduce the overhead associated with each transmission within a packet-based communications network. However, the throughput improvement is also accompanied by a delay increase. The biggest drawback of a significant number of the proposed packet aggregation algorithms is that they tend to only optimize a single metric, i.e. either to maximize throughput or to minimize delay. They do not permit an optimal trade-off between maximizing throughput and minimizing delay. Therefore, these algorithms cannot achieve the optimal network …

The Humanistic Side Of Engineering: Considering Social Science And Humanities Dimensions Of Engineering In Education And Research, Morgan Hynes, Jessica Swenson

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Mathematics and science knowledge/skills are most commonly associated with engineering’s pre-requisite knowledge. Our goals in this paper are to argue for a more systematic inclusion of social science and humanities knowledge in the introduction of engineering to K-12 students. As part of this argument, we present a construct for framing the humanistic side of engineering with illustrative examples of what appealing to the humanistic side of engineering can look like in a classroom setting, and opportunities for research that examines the dynamics the humanistic side of engineering introduces into engineering learning and teaching. The illustrative examples are drawn from interactions …

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Researchers have long been interested in how to recruit and retain more and more diverse students into engineering programs. One consistent challenge in this research is understanding the impacts of interventions from the point of view of the student, and how their preconceptions may influence that effectiveness. This study investigated how secondary students understand the concept of engineering, including what engineering is and what engineers do. The purpose of this work was to describe students’ conceptions of engineering, and to determine how those perceptions relate to student interest in engineering careers. The investigation was founded on the theoretical framework of …

Design And Analysis Of Digital True Random Number Generator, Avantika Yadav

Theses and Dissertations

Random number generator is a key component for strengthening and securing the confidentiality of electronic communications. Random number generators can be divided as either pseudo random number generators or true random number generators. A pseudo random number generator produces a stream of numbers that appears to be random but actually follow predefined sequence. A true random number generator produces a stream of unpredictable numbers that have no defined pattern. There has been growing interest to design true random number generator in past few years. Several Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) based approaches have been …

Experimental Design Methodology Applied To The Oxidation Of Quinolines In Aqueous Medium By Electro-Fenton Process, Souhaila Trabelsi Souissi, Nihal Oturan, Nizar Bellakhal, Mehmet A. Oturan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The degradation behavior of 8-hydroxyquinoleine sulfate (8-HQS), a model molecule of quinolines, was studied in an aqueous medium by electro-Fenton process using a carbon felt cathode and a platinum anode. The great oxidation ability of this process is due to a large production of hydroxyl radical (OH) by electrochemically induced Fenton’s reagent (H2O2, Fe2+). Hydroxyl radicals are very powerful oxidizing agents which react on organics up to complete mineralization. A factorial experimental design was used for determining the operating parameters on the degradation of 8-HQS in an aqueous medium. The results showed that the …

Thoughts On The Complex Relation Between Linked Data, Semantic Annotations, And Ontologies, Krzysztof Janowicz, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The relation between data, annotations, and schemata seems straightforward at first: Data are annotated with additional meta information according to some schemata in order to expose additional non-intrinsic characteristics relevant to the meaningful interpretation of said data. However, on closer examination, things are not as simple. Focusing on geo-information retrieval, we will try to disentangle the aforementioned relations. We will report from our own experience and from observations gathered by editing papers about ontologies and Linked Data for the Semantic Web journal.

Corrosion Behavior Of Zinc Covered With Thin Electrolyte Layers Under External Electric Field, Xu-Jie Yuan, Jun-Xi Zhang, Shi-Ming Zhang, Tian Tan, Qi-Meng Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

The corrosion behavior of zinc covered with thin electrolyte layers (TELs) under an application of external electric field was investigated by performing corrosion potential and cathodic polarization current measurements. The results showed that the Ecorr and ic values first increased and then decreased with the increase of electrolyte layer thickness. Pure zinc exhibited the maximum corrosion potential as the TELs increased to 400 μm under the controls of cathodic process and corrosion products. The application of external electric field resulted in either a negative shift in corrosion potential of zinc or an increase of cathodic current. The effect of external …

Simulation Of Electromagnetic Waves In The Magnetized Cold Plasma By A Dgfetd Method, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Oct 2013

Simulation Of Electromagnetic Waves In The Magnetized Cold Plasma By A Dgfetd Method, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The properties of electromagnetic waves propagating in magnetized plasma slabs and scattering from plasma coated spheres are investigated using the discontinuous Galerkin finite-element time-domain (DGFETD) method. The magnetized plasma is a kind of gyroelectric anisotropic dispersive medium. This anisotropy must be described by an electric permittivity tensor with both nonzero diagonal and off-diagonal elements. Instead of doing the convolution directly in the time domain, an auxiliary differential equations (ADE) method is employed to represent the constitutive relation. The algorithm is validated by studying the transmission characteristics via electron-composed plasma slabs and radar cross section (RCS) of plasma-coated spheres. All numerical …

Oxy-Combustion Of High Water Content Fuels, Fei Yi Oct 2013

Oxy-Combustion Of High Water Content Fuels, Fei Yi

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

As the issues of global warming and the energy crisis arouse extensive concern, more and more research is focused on maximizing energy efficiency and capturing CO2 in power generation. To achieve this, in this research, we propose an unconventional concept of combustion - direct combustion of high water content fuels. Due to the high water content in the fuels, they may not burn under air-fired conditions. Therefore, oxy-combustion is applied. Three applications of this concept in power generation are proposed - direct steam generation for the turbine cycle, staged oxy-combustion with zero flue gas recycle, and oxy-combustion in a low …

Soil Mercury And Its Response To Atmospheric Mercury Deposition Across The Northeastern United States, Xue Yu, Charles T. Driscoll, Richard A. F. Warby, Mario Montesdeoca, Chris E. Johnson

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Terrestrial soil is a large reservoir of atmospherically deposited mercury (Hg). However, few studies have evaluated the accumulation of Hg in terrestrial ecosystems in the northeastern United States, a region which is sensitive to atmospheric Hg deposition. We characterized Hg and organic matter in soil profiles from 139 sampling sites for five subregions across the northeastern United States and estimated atmospheric Hg deposition to these sites by combining numerical modeling with experimental data from the literature. We did not observe any significant relationships between current net atmospheric Hg deposition and soil Hg concentrations or pools, even though soils are a …
