Engineering Education Faculty Publications

The objective of this exploratory study was to describe patterns in self-regulated learning (SRL) for secondary school and college freshmen while engaged in a design activity. The main research question guiding the study was: In what ways did secondary and first year college students differ in addressing an engineering design project? Specific focus was given by exploring how these two groups of students compared in their (1) task interpretation in relation to reported strategy use during the design process; and (2) task interpretation in relation to reported strategy use in project management. Students at one high school in the state …

Navigation & Control Of An Automated Swath Surface Vessel For Bathymetric Mapping, Ketan Rasal

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

With the abundant amount of water on the earth, the study of underwater terrain plays an important role in the use and sustainability of marine resources. A wide variety of technical systems are used to collect such bathymetric data, and autonomous vehicles are being explored as a manner in which to make this process more cost-effective. Students in Santa Clara University's Robotic Systems Laboratory are contributing to this effort through the development of an autonomous SWATH boat that can create such maps. As part of this thesis work, the navigation and control system of this SWATH boat has been significantly …

Finite Element Analysis Of Thermomechanical Processes In Disk Clutch Systems, Zhuo Chen Jan 2013

Finite Element Analysis Of Thermomechanical Processes In Disk Clutch Systems, Zhuo Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The engagement of clutch system is a typical dynamic coupled temperature-displacement process which contains two or more sliding surfaces involved in frictional contact. This process influences evidently the thermal fatigue, noise and vibration of the clutch system. This effect can be more remarkable if the temperature distribution over the clutch disk is not uniform.

This thesis is organized into five chapters:

The first chapter is an introduction which reviews the background and previous work of thermoelastic instability and finite element analysis of clutch system and disk brake.

A parametric analysis of TEI (thermoelastic instability) is elaborated in the second chapter. …

Control Of Harmonics In 6-Pulse Rectifiers, Sudeep K. Pyakuryal Jan 2013

Control Of Harmonics In 6-Pulse Rectifiers, Sudeep K. Pyakuryal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Harmonics are always present in electrical power systems. Harmonic distortion is harmless as long as its level is within the limit. However, with the recent rapid advancement of power electronics, i.e. non linear loads, the use of the variable speed drives are increasing day by day. Harmonics produced by non-linear loads are a potential risk if they are not evaluated, predicted, and controlled.

The power electronic switching devices like thyristor used in the rectifier circuits inject harmonic distortion to the utility grid in different applications. The harmonic distortion causes different problems in the power system. To minimize the unwanted effects …

Enhanced Tribological Properties Of Surfaces Patterned With Su8/Dlc Microstructures, Luke Osborn Jan 2013

Enhanced Tribological Properties Of Surfaces Patterned With Su8/Dlc Microstructures, Luke Osborn

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

In tribology (the study of friction, wear, and lubrication), it is known that micro-textured surfaces can reduce friction due to decreased contact area between two surfaces. The problem with many micro-textures, however, is their inability to withstand significant amounts of wear, thus limiting their potential uses and overall effectiveness. In this study, connected and isolated microstructures of SU8, a negative tone photoresist, coated with and without diamond-like carbon (DLC), were designed to investigate the effects of these microstructures and DLC coating on the tribological performance of a surface. Friction and wear studies were conducted using a tribometer; surface topography and …

Preparation Of New Versatile And Implantable Titanate Nanofiber-Bioscaffolds Via Efficient Cation Exchanges, Keaton Piper

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

For the first time in the implantable biomaterials field, efficient hydrothermal cation exchange methods were developed suitable for mass-production of implantable material. The cation exchange conditions were performed by various methods of temperature, pressure, and time exposure. To confirm both chemical and physical alteration of the scaffold, XRD shift analysis, EDX atomic composition, and SEM imaging were conducted. The optimal results are to use aqueous solutions of 0.5 M chloride salts in sealed heated containers at 180 ̊C for eight hours. Cation exchange capacities are determined for K+, Na+, Li+, Ca2+, and Sr2+; future studies demanding durable, highly specific composition …

Has Supply Chain Management Lost Its Relevance?, Natalie Descheres Jan 2013

Has Supply Chain Management Lost Its Relevance?, Natalie Descheres

Books/Book chapters

The context of business has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. The definition of need satisfaction, the shift from “dot to web” competition and the embedding of the organisation into a wider political and societal environment has transformed SCM contributions and the meaning of work for employees. Interdependence must evolve from the do-it-alone approach and yet the ashes are not proving fertile ground. In many ways, traditional models of management have not kept up with the changes and are taken aback by the complexity that surrounds us. Complexity is however not a feature of our world, but one of …

High Sensitivity Fiber Refractometer Based On An Optical Microfiber Coupler, Lin Bo, Pengfei Wang, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell

Articles

An optical microfiber coupler-based refractive index sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this letter. A microfiber coupler with a minimum diameter of 2.5 µm and a uniform waist with a length of 2 mm is fabricated and used for sensing surrounding refractive index. Both theoretical and experimental results have shown that the spectral response of the proposed microfiber coupler is highly sensitive to the surrounding refractive index over the range from 1.3340 to 1.3800. An average sensitivity of 2723 nm/RIU over this entire refractive index range has been achieved experimentally. Furthermore, for the refractive index range from 1.3340 to …

Molecular Crystallization Directed By Nanoparticles And Nanopatterns, Li Li Jan 2013

Molecular Crystallization Directed By Nanoparticles And Nanopatterns, Li Li

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on nanoparticle/nanopattern-induced molecular self-assembly and crystallization. We propose a universal strategy to synthesize organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructures using inorganic nanoparticles and nanoparticle arrays to induce organic crystalline compound nucleation and crystallization. The nanoconfinement effect will be addressed to study molecular crystallization by changing nanoparticle size, curvature and separation distance. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is the main characterization tool to investigate the topography of the hybrid nanostructures and the nucleation and crystallization process. This work will contribute to the understanding of seed mediated nucleation and crystallization, molecular ordering under nanoconfinement and hybrid nanomaterials.

Hypervelocity Impact Testing Of Multiwall Targets Using Multiple Simultaneously Launched Projectiles, William P. Schonberg, Steve Evans, Michael D. Bjorkman Jan 2013

Hypervelocity Impact Testing Of Multiwall Targets Using Multiple Simultaneously Launched Projectiles, William P. Schonberg, Steve Evans, Michael D. Bjorkman

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multiwall shield designs for spacecraft have been studied extensively in the last four decades as a means of reducing the perforation threat of the near-Earth particulate environment over equivalent single-wall structures. The performance of an impact shield is typically characterized by its ballistic limit equation, which is obtained through high-speed impact tests that typically use spherical projectiles fired in light gas guns. Traditional firings employ only one projectile per launch package. However, some facilities have taken to launching multiple projectiles of different sizes in a single launch package. In light of the significant role played by a ballistic limit equation …
