Identification Of A Target Using Its Natural Poles Using Both Frequency And Time Domain Response, Woojin Lee
Identification Of A Target Using Its Natural Poles Using Both Frequency And Time Domain Response, Woojin Lee
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations
A new methodology for detection and identification of unknown objects in free space or on ground, or under the ground is presented in this dissertation. The Singularity Expansion Method (SEM) is introduced because it is possible to find the natural resonant frequencies of a scatterer from the scattered fields and use the resonant frequencies for identification. Many techniques to extract singularities of the EM response of an object are studied and then the Cauchy and the Matrix Pencil (MP) methods are chosen to carry out the processing. In the first part of the dissertation, a methodology for the computation of …
Turbulence Modeling For Subsonic Separated Flows Over 2-D Airfoils And 3-D Wings, Aaron Michael Rosen
Turbulence Modeling For Subsonic Separated Flows Over 2-D Airfoils And 3-D Wings, Aaron Michael Rosen
Open Access Theses
Accurate predictions of turbulent boundary layers and flow separation through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are becoming more and more essential for the prediction of loads in the design of aerodynamic flight components. Standard eddy viscosity models used in many commercial codes today do not capture the nonequilibrium effects seen in a separated flow and thus do not generally make accurate separation predictions. Part of the reason for this is that under nonequilibrium conditions such as a strong adverse pressure gradient, the history effects of the flow play an important role in the growth and decay of turbulence. More recent turbulence …

Effect Of High-Volume Fly Ash On Shear Strength Of Concrete Beams, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Jeffery Volz, John Myers
Effect Of High-Volume Fly Ash On Shear Strength Of Concrete Beams, Mahdi Arezoumandi, Jeffery Volz, John Myers
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Every year concrete production exceeds 6.5 billion tons worldwide, nearly 1 ton for every man, woman, and child on the planet. In fact, concrete is used 10 times more than any other building material in the world, primarily because of its incredible versatility, availability, and relatively low cost. Unfortunately, the production of Portland cement - the key ingredient in concrete - generates approximately a pound of carbon dioxide for every pound of cement produced. One method of reducing concrete's carbon footprint is to replace a significant amount of the cement with fly ash, a by-product of coal-burning thermal power stations. …

Effect Of Moist Curing And Use Of Lightweight Sand On Characteristics Of High-Performance Concrete, Soo Duck Hwang, Kamal H. Khayat, Dalia Youssef
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Factorial design approach was undertaken to determine the effect of initial moist-curing duration (0 and 6 days) on properties of high-performance concrete (HPC) made with different water-to-cementitious materials ratios (w/cm) of 0.30 and 0.40 and sand substitution rates with lightweight sand (LWS) of 0 and 30 %, by volume. Mechanical properties of HPC are shown to be mainly affected by w/cm and total shrinkage of concrete by the LWS replacement rate and initial moist-curing period. It should be noted that concrete made with 30 % LWS replacement that did not receive any moist-curing exhibited lower shrinkage than moist-cured concrete prepared …

Aggregates must meet certain specifications to be acceptable in asphalt and concrete applications. Among these are specifications that deal with the various aspects of aggregate shape, including flatness and elongation and aggregate angularity. The current practice for ensuring those specifications is the use of manual-mechanical tests. These tests are time consuming, labor intensive and subjective. In addition, tests such as the compacted or uncompacted voids tests (Figure 1), are taken to be a shape (angularity) indicator, even thought the measured quantify is the void ratio. This report describes a prototype of an automated digital video image analysis system that measures …

Effect Of Crumb Rubber Modifier Dissolution On Storage Stability Of Crumb Rubber-Modified Asphalt, Amir Ghavibazoo, Magdy Abdelrahman, Mohyeldin Ragab
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Crumb rubber-modified asphalt (CRMA) extensively suffers from high-temperature storage instability. Because of the higher density of the crumb rubber modifier (CRM) particles, they settle down to the bottom of storage tanks and cause variation between physical properties of the top and bottom samples. The storage stability of the CRMA changes under different interaction parameters and consequently different mechanisms of interaction. In this research the mechanism of separation under different levels of CRM dissolution was investigated by using Stokes' law. The extent and mechanism of CRM dissolution in asphalt was controlled through regulating interaction temperature and interaction mixing speed. A standard …

Modeling Hrtf For Sound Localization In Normal Listeners And Bilateral Cochlear Implant Users, Douglas A. Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mathematical models can be very useful for understanding complicated systems and for testing algorithms through simulation that would be difficult or expensive to implement. This dissertation presents a model that attempts to simulate the sound localization performance of persons using bilateral cochlear implants. The expectation is that this model could prove to be a useful tool in developing new signal processing algorithms for neural encoding strategies.
The head related transfer function (HRTF) is a critical component of this model, and in the ideal case, provides the base characteristics of head shadow, torso and pinna effects. This defines the temporal, intensity …
Multiple Bounding Boxes Algorithm In Collision Detection And Its Performances In Sequential Vs Cuda Parallel Processing, Min Qi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The traditional method for detecting collisions in a 2D computer game uses a axisaligned bounding box around each sprite, and checks to determine if the bounding boxes overlap periodically. Using this single bounding box method may result in a large amount of pixel intersection tests, since a sprite may be composed of areas where the pixels are empty and the intersecting bounding box test results in false positives.
Our algorithm analysis shows that the optimal two or three bounding boxes is the best partition we can get for a reasonable time complexity. The results further show significantly diminishing returns for …

Techno-economic and systems studies on microalgal growth scenarios to date are abbreviated and missing a number of important variables. By including these variables in a detailed model integrating biology, chemistry, engineering, and financial aspects, a more defined systems analysis is possible. Through optimizing the model productivity based on the resulting net profit, the system analysis results in a more accurate assessment of environmental and economic sustainability of specific algal growth scenarios. Photobioreactor algal growth scenario optimization in the system model has resulted in realistic engineering design requirements based on algal growth requirements and fluid dynamics analysis. Results show feasibility for …
Study The Carrier Frequency Offset (Cfo) For Wireless Ofdm, Saeed Mohseni
Study The Carrier Frequency Offset (Cfo) For Wireless Ofdm, Saeed Mohseni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Due to high proficiency with high bandwidth efficiency, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been selected for broadband wireless communication systems. Since OFDM can provide large data rates with sufficient robustness to radio channel impairments, and due to its robustness against the multipath delay spread, OFDM has always been a designated technique for broadband wireless communication mobile systems. Nevertheless, OFDM suffers from Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO). CFO has been recognized as a major disadvantage of OFDM. CFO can lead to the frequency mismatch in transmitter and receiver oscillator. Lack of the synchronization of the local oscillator signal (L.OSC), for down …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A smart grid is an electricity network that accommodates two-way power flows, and utilizes two-way communications and increased measurement, in order to provide more information to customers and aid in the development of a more efficient electricity market. The current electrical network is outdated and has many shortcomings relating to power flows, inefficient electricity markets, generation/supply balance, a lack of information for the consumer and insufficient consumer interaction with electricity markets. Many of these challenges can be addressed with a smart grid, but there remain significant barriers to the implementation of a smart grid.

Reducing Communication Delay Variability For A Group Of Robots, Goncalo Martins
Reducing Communication Delay Variability For A Group Of Robots, Goncalo Martins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A novel architecture is presented for reducing communication delay variability for a group of robots. This architecture relies on using three components: a microprocessor architecture that allows deterministic real-time tasks; an event-based communication protocol in which nodes transmit in a TDMA fashion, without the need of global clock synchronization techniques; and a novel communication scheme that enables deterministic communications by allowing senders to transmit without regard for the state of the medium or coordination with other senders, and receivers can tease apart messages sent simultaneously with a high probability of success. This approach compared to others, allows simultaneous communications without …

Efficient Space Dedication To Bus Rapid Transit Or Light Rail Systems, Jacob Tsao, A Pratama
Faculty Publications
Dedicating two lanes and passenger platforms to transit typically requires taking the same space away from general use. This may affect public support. This paper proposes efficient geometric configurations for a two-dedicated-lane BRT or light rail system that requires a minimum amount of right-of-way along a busy commute arterial. In many current busy commute corridors, a significant part of the street median is underused or unused for traffic purposes. The efficiency is achieved ainly by using the street median between a left-turn lane and its counterpart located at the intersection on the other end of the same street section and …
Effects Of Storage Tank Mixing On Water Quality, Andy Lemke, Delvin E. Deboer
Effects Of Storage Tank Mixing On Water Quality, Andy Lemke, Delvin E. Deboer
Water and Environmental Engineering Research Reports
Storage tanks are used by water systems to maintain pressure in the distribution system and to meet the varying water demands of the system. The design and operation of the storage tanks affect their mixing characteristics which affect the water quality. Poor mixing can lead to stratification in the tanks, which can lead to low chlorine residual causing microbial growth and nitrification. This thesis presents the results of the study of seven storage tanks used in South Dakota’s rural water systems. The tanks were chosen to represent varying height to diameter ratios, varying types of disinfectant, and to study passive …

A Resolution Procedure For Description Logics With Nominal Schemas, Cong Wang, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
We present a polynomial resolution-based decision procedure for the recently introduced description logic ELHOVn(⊓), which features nominal schemas as new language construct. Our algorithm is based on ordered resolution and positive superposition, together with a lifting lemma. In contrast to previous work on resolution for description logics, we have to overcome the fact that ELHOVn(⊓) does not allow for a normalization resulting in clauses of globally limited size.

Characterization Of Porous Media In Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Based On Percolation Studies, Stephen Stacy
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Water management in the porous media of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, catalyst layer and porous transport layers (PTL) is confronted by two issues, flooding and dry out, both of which result in improper functioning of the fuel cell and lead to poor performance and degradation.
The data that has been reported about water percolation and wettability within a fuel cell catalyst layer is limited to porosimetry. A new method and apparatus for measuring the percolation pressure in the catalyst layer has been developed. The experimental setup is similar to a Hele-Shaw experiment where samples are compressed and a …

Use Of Vacuum For The Stabilization Of Dry Sand Slopes, B. Bate, Limin Zhang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Vacuum is proposed as a means for rescuing soil slopes showing signs of impending failure. Two aspects associated with the proposed method were studied: namely, the theory of airflow through dry soils and the effectiveness of vacuum for enhancing the stability of soil slopes. A model test device was developed, and two series of tests were carried out using this device. One was a series of tests on pore-air pressure distributions in dry sand slopes, and the second series involved dry sand slope stability tests. The results revealed that a vacuum (negative pore-air pressure) even as small as 20.4 kPa …
