Rfid Technology Selection And Economic Justification For Healthcare Asset Tracking, Tyler Robert Peabody, Tali Freed
Rfid Technology Selection And Economic Justification For Healthcare Asset Tracking, Tyler Robert Peabody, Tali Freed
Master's Theses
Although Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Real-Time Location System (RTLS) technologies for inventory tracking have been growing in popularity, the healthcare industry has been reluctant to adopt these technologies. One of the primary reasons for this lack of enthusiasm has been the risk associated with electromagnetic interference between RFID/RTLS systems and medical equipment functionality. The other reason has been the substantial cost and complexity of implementing RFID/RTLS in healthcare organizations. In this study, we show that there are several ways to safely install RFID/RTLS systems to improve the inventory management processes of hospitals and clinics. We then analyze the inventory …
Cloth Filter For Disaster Relief Water Treatment, Shasta Le'ja Billings
Cloth Filter For Disaster Relief Water Treatment, Shasta Le'ja Billings
Master's Theses
Relief organizations and governments strive to provide safe drinking water to natural disaster survivors as quickly as possible. However, drinking water is typically provided either as bottled water or via mobile water treatment equipment, both of which can be difficult or expensive to transport rapidly into disaster zones. An alternative is the waterbag point-of-use treatment device developed at Cal Poly that allows survivors to produce safe drinking water from contaminated local sources. The waterbag is a 10-L bladder designed for use with Procter & Gamble Purifier of Water (PŪR®) sachets, which contain coagulant and chlorine compounds. Following treatment …
Bacterial Growth On Metal And Non-Metal Surfaces In A Static Bioreactor, Rolan Yuk Loong Liong
Bacterial Growth On Metal And Non-Metal Surfaces In A Static Bioreactor, Rolan Yuk Loong Liong
Master's Theses
Research was conducted to observe bacterial growth on the surface of metals in a static bioreactor. Metal and non-metal samples were subjected to bacterial exposure (1 day and 9 days). The metal samples were surface treated prior to bacterial exposure. The microstructures of the surface treated samples were analyzed by optical microscopy. After exposure, the microstructures of the samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analysis suggested that microbial attachment on the surface was related to the underlying microstructure of steel. The preferential attachment of microbes could potentially be influenced by cathodic and anodic regions created by the …

Discrimination Of Individual Tigers (Panthera Tigris) From Long Distance Roars, An Ji, Michael T. Johnson, Edward J. Walsh, Joann Mcgee, Douglas L. Armstrong
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This paper investigates the extent of tiger (Panthera tigris) vocal individuality through both qualitative and quantitative approaches using long distance roars from six individual tigers at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE. The framework for comparison across individuals includes statistical and discriminant function analysis across whole vocalization measures and statistical pattern classification using a hidden Markov model (HMM) with frame-based spectral features comprised of Greenwood frequency cepstral coefficients. Individual discrimination accuracy is evaluated as a function of spectral model complexity, represented by the number of mixtures in the underlying Gaussian mixture model (GMM), and temporal model complexity, …

Predicting Landslides In Real Time, Michael J. Olsen
Predicting Landslides In Real Time, Michael J. Olsen
TREC Project Briefs
The Oregon Department of Transportation, or ODOT, has an ongoing struggle to maintain public highways against earth movements such as erosion, earthquakes and landslides. An earthquake or landslide can close down a road for days, while highway workers fight to keep supply lines open and repair the damage. Particularly along Oregon’s coastal roads with high sea cliffs, these natural processes are a constant threat to transportation infrastructure. The damage caused by gradual erosion is typically not detectable until there is a landslide or other disaster, costing the state considerable time and money to repair. New technology has the potential to …
Semi-Supervised Heterogeneous Fusion For Multimedia Data Co-Clustering, Lei Meng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Dong Xu
Semi-Supervised Heterogeneous Fusion For Multimedia Data Co-Clustering, Lei Meng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Dong Xu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Co-clustering is a commonly used technique for tapping the rich meta-information of multimedia web documents, including category, annotation, and description, for associative discovery. However, most co-clustering methods proposed for heterogeneous data do not consider the representation problem of short and noisy text and their performance is limited by the empirical weighting of the multi-modal features. In this paper, we propose a generalized form of Heterogeneous Fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory, called GHF-ART, for co-clustering of large-scale web multimedia documents. By extending the two-channel Heterogeneous Fusion ART (HF-ART) to multiple channels, GHF-ART is designed to handle multimedia data with an arbitrarily rich …
A Steady-State Detection (Ssd) Algorithm To Detect Non-Stationary Drifts In Processes, Jeff Kelly, John Hedengren
A Steady-State Detection (Ssd) Algorithm To Detect Non-Stationary Drifts In Processes, Jeff Kelly, John Hedengren
Faculty Publications
Detecting windows or intervals of when a continuous process is operating in a state of steadiness is useful especially when steady-state models are being used to optimize the process or plant on-line or in real-time. The term steady-state implies that the process is operating around some stable point or within some stationary region where it must be assumed that the accumulation or rate-of-change of material, energy and momentum is statistically insignificant or negligible. This new approach is to assume the null-hypothesis that the process is stationary about its mean subject to independent and identically distributed random error or shocks (white-noise) …
Entropic Depletion Of Dna In Triangular Nanochannels, Wesley F. Reinhart, Douglas R. Tree, Kevin D. Dorfman
Entropic Depletion Of Dna In Triangular Nanochannels, Wesley F. Reinhart, Douglas R. Tree, Kevin D. Dorfman
Faculty Publications
Using Monte Carlo simulations of a touching-bead model of double-stranded DNA, we show that DNA extension is enhanced in isosceles triangular nanochannels (relative to a circular nanochannel of the same effective size) due to entropic depletion in the channel corners. The extent of the enhanced extension depends non-monotonically on both the accessible area of the nanochannel and the apex angle of the triangle. We also develop a metric to quantify the extent of entropic depletion, thereby collapsing the extension data for circular, square, and various triangular nanochannels onto a single master curve for channel sizes in the transition between the …

Combination And Applications Of Time-Resolved Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy And Electrochemical Methods, Yu Bao, Yan Mao, Wei Wang, Zheng-Gang Li, Li Niu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Electrochemical-surface plasmon resonance (EC-SPR) technique, developed in recent years, is a new technology which combines time-resolved surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a physical phenomenon generated by optical coupling using a metallic thin film and is very sensitive to optical analysis. The principles of SPR and EC-SPR are briefly introduced and the applications of the combination of SPR spectroscopy with electrochemical techniques are reviewed in this paper. This new technology has been widely used in such research areas as reaction dynamics, biochemical sensors, electrode/electrolyte interfaces, kinetic parameters and bimolecular interactions.

A Comparative Study Of Charge-Discharge Behaviors Of α-Pbo2 And β-Pbo2 Cathodes, Cong-Ying Cui, Xue-Mei Ma, De-Long Kong, Hou-Yi Ma
Journal of Electrochemistry
The α-PbO2 and β-PbO2 powders were prepared using simple chemical synthetic methods, and their crystalline structures and surface morphologies were characterized with X-ray powder diffraction spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Using the as-synthesized α-PbO2 and β-PbO2 powders as positive active materials, the electrochemical performance of the two PbO2 materials was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge tests, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results indicate that the discharge capacity of α-PbO2 electrode is larger than that of β-PbO2; moreover, the composite electrodes made by α-PbO2 and β-PbO2 mixtures with …

An In Situ Ftir Spectroelectrochemical Study On Methanol Oxidation At Pt-Mo2C/Gc Catalyst, Hai-Ping Huang, Xi-Yu Yao, Pei-Kang Shen
Journal of Electrochemistry
A 40% Pt on Mo2C/GC catalyst has been prepared by ion exchange method. The mechanism of methanol electrooxidation on Pt-Mo2C/GC and commercial Pt/C catalysts in acidic media was studied by cyclic voltammetry, XRD measurements and in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroelectrochemistry. The results revealed that the Pt nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on Mo2C/GC with an average particle size of 3 nm. The cyclic voltammetric and chronopotentiometric experiments indicated that Pt-Mo2C/GC catalyst exhibited a better performance for methanol oxidation than that of Pt/C in acid solution. A negative shift over 90 mV of the …

A Hybrid Electromagnetics-Circuit Simulation Method Exploiting Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Time Domain Method, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A hybrid electromagnetics (EM)-circuit simulation method employing the discontinuous Galerkin finite element time domain (DGFETD) method is developed to model single lumped port networks comprised of both linear and non-linear elements. The whole computational domain is split into two subsystems: one is the EM subsystem that is analyzed by DGFETD, while another is the circuit subsystem that is modeled by the Modified Nodal Analysis method to generate a circuit subsystem. The coupling between the EM and circuit subsystems is achieved through a lumped port. Due to the local properties of DGFETD operations, only small coupling matrix equation systems are involved. …

Applications Of Ellipsometry In The Investigations Of Electrode-Solution Interface, Jing-Lei Lei, Liang-Liu Wu, Ling-Jie Li, Sheng-Mao Wu, Sheng-Tao Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Ellipsometry is an optical technique with high-sensitivity to quantitatively obtain surface/interface properties such as thickness andrefractive index by analyzing the changes in polarized light reflected from the surface/interface. Its noncontacting and nondestructivenature makes it possible to acquire thein situreal-time information of the change at the surface/interface. Therefore, ellipsometry has been used widely in the electrochemical investigations. In this paper, based on the brief introduction of the measurementprinciple of ellipsometry, the current progress and the future trends of ellipsometry in electrochemistry arediscussed. The applications of ellipsometry in the fields of conversion and storage of electrochemical energy, electrochemistry ofmaterials science, electroanalysisand bioelectrochemistry are …

Porous Electrodes With High Pt Utilization Obtained By Ion-Exchange/Electrodeposition, Si-Guo Chen, Wei Ding, Xue-Qiang Qi, Li Li, Zi-Hua Deng, Zi-Dong Wei
Journal of Electrochemistry
We report a novel method based on ion-exchange/electrodeposition (IEE) for constructing high Pt utilization porous electrodes. The electrode prepared using IEE was assessed by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and single cell test. The preliminary results show that the undesired ion-exchange between Pt anion and surface functional group in carbon black can be eliminated through the electrode preparation process, and every Pt particle prepared by IEE is expected to be deposited on the three-phase reaction zone and thus can be fully utilized in fuel cell reactions. The Pt particle size, shape and distribution …

Simultaneous Measurement Of Deep Tissue Blood Flow And Oxygenation Using Noncontact Diffuse Correlation Spectroscopy Flow-Oximeter, Ting Li, Yu Lin, Yu Shang, Lian He, Chong Huang, Margaret M. Szabunio, Guoqiang Yu
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
We report a novel noncontact diffuse correlation spectroscopy flow-oximeter for simultaneous quantification of relative changes in tissue blood flow (rBF) and oxygenation (Δ[oxygenation]). The noncontact probe was compared against a contact probe in tissue-like phantoms and forearm muscles (n = 10), and the dynamic trends in both rBF and Δ[oxygenation] were found to be highly correlated. However, the magnitudes of Δ[oxygenation] measured by the two probes were significantly different. Monte Carlo simulations and phantom experiments revealed that the arm curvature resulted in a significant underestimation (~-20%) for the noncontact measurements in Δ[ …

A Dft Calculation Screening Of Pt-Based Bimetallic Catalysts For Oxygen Reduction, Li-Hui Ou, Sheng-Li Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Developing Pt-lean catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key for large-scale application of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this paper, we have proposed a multiple-descriptor strategy for screening efficient and durable ORR alloy catalysts of low Pt content. We argue that an ideal Pt-based bimetallic alloy catalyst for ORR should possess simultaneously negative alloy formation energy, negative surface segregation energy of Pt and a lower oxygen binding ability than pure Pt. By performing detailed DFT calculations on the thermodynamics, surface chemistry and electronic properties of various Pt-M alloys (M refers to non-precious transition metals in the …

Sodium Carbonate Catalyzed Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Over Tio2 Nanotubes Photoanode, De-Sheng Kong, Jing Wang, Xue-Di Zhang, Xi Zhao, Chao Wang, Yuan-Yuan Feng, Wen-Juan Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Surface recombination of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs at semiconductor/electrolyte interface is one of the most essential reasons responsible for lowering photoconversion efficiency (Φ) of light to chemical energy for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting reaction. In this paper, the catalytic effect of sodium carbonate on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) over TiO2 nanotubes photoanode during PEC water splitting was investigated by performing photocurrent and ac impedance measurements. It was demonstrated that the addiction of 1 mmol•L-1 Na2CO3 in 0.5 mol•L-1 NaClO4 electrolyte can effectively improve the charge transfer properties for the photogenerated holes across …
A Quantitative Analysis Of Memory Controller Page Policies, Matthew Blackmore
A Quantitative Analysis Of Memory Controller Page Policies, Matthew Blackmore
Dissertations and Theses
Two common goals in computing system design are increasing performance and decreasing power consumption. DRAM-based memory subsystems are a major component of both system performance and power consumption. Memory controllers employ strategies to efficiently schedule DRAM operations to reduce latency and to utilize DRAM low power modes when possible. One of the most important of these is the page policy, which determines when to close pages in DRAM. An effective DRAM memory controller page policy is important to minimizing power consumption and increasing system performance. This thesis explores the impact memory controller page policy has on performance as measured by …

The recent achievement of atomic resolution with dynamic atomic force microscopy (dAFM) [Fukuma et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 2005, 87, 034101], where quality factors of the oscillating probe are inherently low, challenges some accepted beliefs concerning sensitivity and resolution in dAFM imaging modes. Through analysis and experiment we study the performance metrics for high-resolution imaging with dAFM in liquid media with amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM) and drive-amplitude modulation (DAM) imaging modes. We find that while the quality factors of dAFM probes may deviate by several orders of magnitude between vacuum and liquid media, their sensitivity to tip-sample forces …
Quantifying The Nonlinear, Anisotropic Material Response Of Spinal Ligaments, Daniel J. Robertson
Quantifying The Nonlinear, Anisotropic Material Response Of Spinal Ligaments, Daniel J. Robertson
Theses and Dissertations
Spinal ligaments may be a significant source of chronic back pain, yet they are often disregarded by the clinical community due to a lack of information with regards to their material response, and innervation characteristics. The purpose of this dissertation was to characterize the material response of spinal ligaments and to review their innervation characteristics.
Review of relevant literature revealed that all of the major spinal ligaments are innervated. They cause painful sensations when irritated and provide reflexive control of the deep spinal musculature. As such, including the neurologic implications of iatrogenic ligament damage in the evaluation of surgical procedures …
