This review of metal-based nanoparticles focuses on factors influencing their distribution into the nervous system, evidence they enter brain parenchyma, and nervous system responses. Gold is emphasized as a model metal-based nanoparticle and for risk assessment in the companion review. The anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, basics of colloid chemistry, and environmental factors that influence what cells see are reviewed to provide background on the biological, physical–chemical, and internal milieu factors that influence nervous system nanoparticle uptake. The results of literature searches reveal little nanoparticle research included the nervous system, which about equally involved in vitro and in …
All-Optical Sigma-Delta Modulator For Analog-To-Digital Conversion, Bin Zhang
All-Optical Sigma-Delta Modulator For Analog-To-Digital Conversion, Bin Zhang
Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering
In this thesis, an all-optical sigma-delta (ΣΔ) modulator for analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) using a novel optical bistable switch, the SOA-PD device, is demonstrated. The presented all-optical ΣΔ modulator consists of a photonic leaky integrator, the SOA-PD optical comparator, and a positive feedback loop. The switching properties of the SOA-PD device are studied and experimentally tested to confirm its performance. Then the all-optical ΣΔ modulator is designed according to the switching performance of the SOA-PD device. It is demonstrated that the all-optical ΣΔ modulator is capable of producing an inverted non-return-to-zero (NRZ) type binary output for frequencies in the range of …

Assessment Of Ear Disorders Using Power Reflectance, Hideko Heidi Nakajima, John J. Rosowski, Navid Shahnaz, Susan E. Voss
Engineering: Faculty Publications
This article describes the effect of various pathologies on power reflectance (PR) and absorbance measured in human adults. The pathologies studied include those affecting the tympanic membrane, the middle-ear ossicles, the middle-ear cavity, the inner ear, and intracranial pressure. Interesting pathology-induced changes in PR that are statistically significant have been reported. Nevertheless, because measurements of PR obtained from normal-hearing subjects have large variations and some pathology-induced changes are small, it can be difficult to use PR alone for differential diagnosis. There are, however, common clinical situations without reliable diagnostic methods that can benefit from PR measurements. These conditions include ears …

Fiber Pigtailed Thin Wall Capillary Coupler For Excitation Of Microsphere Wgm Resonator, Haining Wang, Xinwei Lan, Jie Huang, Lei Yuan, Cheol-Woon Kim, Hai Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we demonstrate a fiber pigtailed thin wall capillary coupler for excitation of Whispering Gallery Modes (WGMs) of microsphere resonators. The coupler is made by fusion-splicing an optical fiber with a capillary tube and consequently etching the capillary wall to a thickness of a few microns. Light is coupled through the peripheral contact between inserted microsphere and the etched capillary wall. The coupling efficiency as a function of the wall thickness was studied experimentally. WGM resonance with a Q-factor of 1.14 x 104 was observed using a borosilicate glass microsphere with a diameter of 71 µm. The …

Simulations Of Ion Thruster Plume Contamination With A Whole Grid Sputtered Mo Source Model, Daoru Frank Han, Joseph J. Wang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A particle simulation based source model is developed to calculate the density distribution of the sputtered Mo atoms for a whole ion optics grid. The source model is used in PIC simulation of ion thruster plume contamination for 3-grid and 2-grid ion thrusters. The results show that the commonly used point-source approximation for sputtered Mo atoms is oversimplified and would lead to over-prediction of contamination deposition.

Weighing The Financial And Sustainable Benefits Of High Performance Structures In Seismically Active Regions, Alia Talina Barajas
Master's Theses
This thesis investigated the potential advantages and disadvantages of high performance structures by comparing the financial and environmental impacts of a performance based four-story office building to one designed to meet minimum code-level requirements.
To generate a comparison, the lateral system of a four-story structure utilizing buckling restrained braced frames was designed to meet code-level requirements per the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE 7-05) and again to meet the immediate occupancy criteria defined by ASCE 41-06 Seismic Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings. The following was then performed:
- Test the structural performance of …
Use Of A Rolling Road System In Crosswind Conditions, Mau-Kuo Chen
Use Of A Rolling Road System In Crosswind Conditions, Mau-Kuo Chen
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Wind tunnel testing continues to play an important role in vehicle aerodynamic development. Accurate results are strongly associated with whether the wind tunnel can closely simulate the on-road conditions, including the Reynolds number and all boundary conditions. Rolling road systems (or moving belts) have been a successful tool for many auto makers and racing teams to simulate the relative motion between the stationary vehicle model and the floor in the test section. The mechanism of the rolling road system is simple, but how it affects the adjacent flow field and how this flow interacts with the flow underneath the vehicle …
Approximate Algorithms For The Combined Arrival-Departure Aircraft Sequencing And Reactive Scheduling Problems On Multiple Runways, Gulsah Hancerliogullari
Approximate Algorithms For The Combined Arrival-Departure Aircraft Sequencing And Reactive Scheduling Problems On Multiple Runways, Gulsah Hancerliogullari
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The problem addressed in this dissertation is the Aircraft Sequencing Problem (ASP) in which a schedule must be developed to determine the assignment of each aircraft to a runway, the appropriate sequence of aircraft on each runway, and their departing or landing times. The dissertation examines the ASP over multiple runways, under mixed mode operations with the objective of minimizing the total weighted tardiness of aircraft landings and departures simultaneously. To prevent the dangers associated with wake-vortex effects, separation times enforced by Aviation Administrations (e.g., FAA) are considered, adding another level of complexity given that such times are sequence-dependent. Due …
Improving The Stability Of High And Low Bandgap Polymers Organic Photovoltaic Devices Using A Solution Based Titanium Sub-Oxide Interfacial Layer, Kurniawan Foe
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The improvement in device efficiency has brought organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices closer to commercial viability, highlighting the importance of studying the lifetime and stability of OPV devices. At present, the lifetime and stability of OPV devices is much shorter and poor mainly caused by oxygen, moisture, and light resulting in the oxidation on low work function electrodes and the degradation of the morphology of the photoactive layer. To improve the lifetime and stability of the OPV devices, we used newly developed low bandgap polymer, PCDTBT, as the electron acceptor material and a solution based titanium sub-oxide (TiOx) interfacial layer inserted …

This study assumes that the launch vehicles and precision Mars entry descent and landing systems, required for eventual crewed missions to the surface, have been developed, motivating the rapid build-up of a fixed surface base to enable extended human stays. During the time interval between the first successful placement of a heavy (between 20 and 80 metric ton) payload and completion of the baseline human-rated Mars outpost, it will be possible to utilize this large payload delivery capability to accelerate robotic exploration of the surface from the fixed base location.
One element of such an expanded robotic exploration program will …
Reliability-Based Topology Optimization Of Trusses With Stochastic Stiffness, Mehdi Jalalpour, James K. Guest, Takeru Igusa
Reliability-Based Topology Optimization Of Trusses With Stochastic Stiffness, Mehdi Jalalpour, James K. Guest, Takeru Igusa
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
A new method is proposed for reliability-based topology optimization of truss structures with random geometric imperfections and material variability. Such imperfections and variability, which may result from manufacturing processes, are assumed to be small in relation to the truss dimensions and mean material properties and normally distributed. Extensive numerical evidence suggests that the trusses, when optimized in terms of a displacement-based demand metric, are characterized by randomness in the stiffness that follow the Gumbel distribution. Based on this observation, it was possible to derive analytical expressions for the structural reliability, enabling the formulation of a computationally efficient single-loop reliability-based topology …

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
The solar furnace research project at Valparaiso University utilizes a decoupled solar thermal electrolysis process for the production of H2 from water. We are focusing on an iron oxide system, which involves the conversion of magnetite to hematite in a cyclical process. Our experimental study for the iron oxide system confirmed that the electrolytic oxidation and thermal reduction steps of the metal oxide occur in a laboratory scale environment. Unfortunately, some of the Fe+3 products for the magnetite system stays in solution when the electrolysis is done in a strong acid. We needed to develop methods to quantify the fraction …

The First Step In Solar Hydrogen Production: Development Of A Solar Thermal Reactor For The Reduction Of Metal Oxide Particles, Jesse Fosheim, Andrew Schrader
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
A solar thermal reactor has been designed to experimentally investigate promising paths for reducing metal oxide particles to reduced oxidation states (e.g. Fe2O3 to Fe3O4) utilizing concentrated solar energy. This reactor is windowless and is able to handle internal cavity temperatures in excess of 1700 K. It also has a quasi-continuous feed system that allows the particle residence times to be varied for particles between 0.044 mm and 1 mm in diameter. Furthermore, this reactor utilizes an instrumentation system for the measurement of temperature, particle residence time, particle mass flow rate, and solar flux. In an industrial setting, a large-scale …

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
One method to improve the fuel efficiency of American made vehicles is to reduce vehicle weight by substituting steel components with lighter magnesium (Mg) components. Unfortunately, U.S. produced Mg currently costs approximately $3.31 per kg, over seven times the price of steel. Furthermore, Mg production has a staggering energy and environmental impact, consuming up to 102 kW-hr/kg-Mg of energy and producing 36 kg of CO2/kg-Mg. To reduce the overwhelming economic and environmental impact of Mg, a new solar thermal electrolytic process has been developed for the production of Mg from MgO. Through this process, liquid Mg is produced in a …

Microwave Assisted Reconstruction Of Optical Interferograms For Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing, Jie Huang, Lei Hua, Xinwei Lan, Tao Wei, Hai Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper reports a distributed fiber optic sensing technique through microwave assisted separation and reconstruction of optical interferograms in spectrum domain. The approach involves sending a microwave-modulated optical signal through cascaded fiber optic interferometers. The microwave signal was used to resolve the position and reflectivity of each sensor along the optical fiber. By sweeping the optical wavelength and detecting the modulation signal, the optical spectrum of each sensor can be reconstructed. Three cascaded fiber optic extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensors were used to prove the concept. Their microwave-reconstructed interferogram matched well with those recorded individually using an optical spectrum analyzer. The …

Ground Shock Resistance Of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls, Christopher Y. Tuan
Ground Shock Resistance Of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls, Christopher Y. Tuan
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
A simple analytical method has been developed that characterizes plane shock wave propagation through reinforced soil and the dynamic interaction between soil and retaining wall panels. The shock wave due to an explosion in the backfill was modeled as a velocity boundary condition at a standoff distance from the wall. The exact solution to this problem was obtained using the Laplace transform method. Full-scale explosive test data from 4.6-m high and 24-m wide reinforced soil walls were used to validate the analytical methodology. The accuracy of the analytical method has further been verified by finite element analysis. The method is …

D esign fixation has been found to be complex in its definition and expression, but it plays an important role in design idea generation. Identifying the factors that influence fixation is crucial in understanding how to enhance the design process and reduce the negative effects of fixation. One way to potentially mitigate fixation is through product dissection activities since this activity has been shown to increase creativity and design space exploration in engineering design. However, product dissection has not been studied in the context of design fixation, so it is unclear if, or how, this type of activity influences fixation. …

Kinetics Of Tomato Peroxidase Inactivation By Atmospheric Pressure Cold Plasma Based On Dielectric Barrier Discharge, Patrick J. Cullen, Shashi Pankaj, N. Misra
Articles
Atmospheric pressure cold plasma technology is an emerging nonthermal food technology for microbiological decontamination of food and bio-materials. This study demonstrates the applicability of in-package cold plasma technology as a novel means to inactivation of enzymes. The kinetics of inactivation of tomato peroxidase as a model enzyme was studied at 30, 40 and 50kV, for up to 5’ of atmospheric air dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatments. The enzyme activity was found to decrease with both treatment time and voltage, the former variable exhibiting a more pronounced effect. Kinetic models viz. first-order, Weibull and logistic models were fitted to the experimentally …
