The amazing growth in the usage of the broadband services has motivated a number of the services' providers to find drastic solutions. The percentage of broadband subscribers has increased from 5.3% of the world population in 2007 to 8.5% of the population in 2011. The increase in the number of subcarriers and a high bandwidth requirement are two motivations to demonstrate the broadband service provision. As a promised demonstration of the broadband provision, professionals use optical fiber to account for the present and the future broadband demand.

Power consumption and bandwidth capacity, which the optical fiber has offered, are two …

Scale Reasoning With Fuzzy-El+ Ontologies Based On Mapreduce, Zhangquan Zhou, Guilin Qi, Chang Lui, Pascal Hitzler, Raghava Mutharaju

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Fuzzy extension of Description Logics (DLs) allows the formal representation and handling of fuzzy or vague knowledge. In this paper, we consider the problem of reasoning with fuzzy-EL+, which is a fuzzy extension of EL+. We first identify the challenges and present revised completion classification rules for fuzzy-EL+ that can be handled by MapReduce programs. We then propose an algorithm for scale reasoning with fuzzy-EL+ ontologies using MapReduce. Some preliminary experimental results are provided to show the scalability of our algorithm.

A Meta-Analysis Of Critical Success Factors Affecting Mobile Learning, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Muasaad Alrasheedi Aug 2013

A Meta-Analysis Of Critical Success Factors Affecting Mobile Learning, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Muasaad Alrasheedi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Considering the popularity and ubiquitous nature of mobile phones, the acceptance of m-Learning in educational institutions is limited. While several studies have reviewed m-Learning platforms, different settings and contexts make it difficult to collate these studies and discover the key factors for the successful adoption of m-Learning platform. This study uses meta-analysis technique to compare results from multiple studies assessing the critical m-Learning success factors. We find that learners perceive collaboration opportunities and anytime-anywhere learning possibility as the key benefits of m-Learning. Further, good content presented in a user friendly way is a primary expectation from an m-Learning application.

Peristaltic contraction of the embryonic heart tube produces time- and spatial-varying wall shear stress (WSS) and pressure gradients (∇P) across the atrioventricular (AV) canal. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are a genetically tractable system to investigate cardiac morphogenesis. The use of Tg(fli1a:EGFP)y1 transgenic embryos allowed for delineation and two-dimensional reconstruction of the endocardium. This time-varying wall motion was then prescribed in a two-dimensional moving domain computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, providing new insights into spatial and temporal variations in WSS and ∇P during cardiac development. The CFD simulations were validated with particle image …

Nonlinear Dynamics Of Carbon Nanotubes Under Soft Alternating Current Actuation, Le Luo Aug 2013

Nonlinear Dynamics Of Carbon Nanotubes Under Soft Alternating Current Actuation, Le Luo

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis work deals with electrostatically actuated Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) cantilevers. Four forces are acting on the CNTs cantilever, namely damping, elastic, electrostatic and van der Waals forces. The van der Waals force is significant for values of 50 nm or lower of the gap between the CNTs and the ground substrate. As both electrostatic and van der Waals forces are nonlinear, and the CNTs electrostatic actuation is given by alternating current (AC) voltage, the CNTs undergo nonlinear parametric dynamics. The Method of Multiple Scales (MMS) and Reduced Order Model (ROM) are employed to investigate the system under soft excitation …

Measurement Of Emissions From A Passenger Truck Fueled With Biodiesel From Different Feedstocks, Natchanok Pala-En, Melanie L. Sattler, Brian Dennis, Victoria Chen, Rachel L. Muncrief

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Biodiesel has generated increased interest recently as an alternative to petroleum-derived diesel. Due to its high oxygen content, biodiesel typically burns more completely than petroleum diesel, and thus has lower emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM). However, biodiesel may increase or decrease nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, depending on biodiesel feedstock, engine type, and test cycle. The purpose of this study was to compare emissions from 20% blends of biodiesel made from 4 feedstocks (soybean oil, canola oil, waste cooking oil, and animal fat) with emissions from ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD). …

Social Capital And Walkability As Social Aspects Of Sustainability, Shannon Rogers, Kevin Gardner, Cynthia Carlson Aug 2013

Social Capital And Walkability As Social Aspects Of Sustainability, Shannon Rogers, Kevin Gardner, Cynthia Carlson

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The concepts of sustainability and sustainable development are frequently described as having three main components, sometimes referred to as the three pillars or the triple bottom line: environmental, economic, and social. Because of an historical focus in the sustainability field on correcting environmental problems, much consideration has been given to environmental issues, especially how they interface with economic ones. Frequently mentioned but rarely examined, the social aspects of sustainability have been considered the weakest and least described pillar. After a brief review of existing concepts and theories, this paper uses a case study approach to examine the third pillar more …

Aspen Plus Simulation Of Biomass Gasification In A Steam Blown Dual Fluidised Bed, Wayne Doherty, Anthony Reynolds, David Kennedy

Book/Book Chapters

The efficient utilisation of biomass resources is of utmost importance. Biomass gasification offers much higher efficiencies than combustion. Gasification is a process in which a fuel is converted to a combustible gas (syngas). A dual fluidised bed gasifier known as the fast internally circulating fluidised bed (FICFB) was selected. It has been demonstrated at industrial scale and data is readily available for model validation. An Aspen Plus model was developed to simulate the FICFB gasifier. The model is based on Gibbs free energy minimisation and the restricted equilibrium method was used to calibrate it. The model has been validated and …

Experimental Development And Analysis Of A Novel Setup For Insulated Dielectrophoresis, Johnie Hodge Aug 2013

Experimental Development And Analysis Of A Novel Setup For Insulated Dielectrophoresis, Johnie Hodge

All Theses

Dielectrophoresis has long been studied and utilized for the manipulation of microscale particles in solution. This phenomenon is due to the induced polarization of dielectric particles subjected to an electric field. When the field is also inhomogeneous in terms of the distribution of its strength through space, the polarized particles move and come to rest in certain areas due to the relationship between their and the solvent's relative permittivities. If the electric field is homogenous, such as within a parallel plate capacitor, the particles are polarized according to their permittivity and the field's frequency, but they will not move.
These …

Renovation Of Ammonia Contaminated Produced Water Using Constructed Wetlands, Donald Beebe Aug 2013

Renovation Of Ammonia Contaminated Produced Water Using Constructed Wetlands, Donald Beebe

All Dissertations

Pilot-scale wetland treatment systems were designed and constructed to evaluate renovation of simulated oilfield produced water contaminated with ammonia (20 mg/L ammonia-N). A process-based pilot-scale constructed wetland was designed to meet specific biogeochemical conditions for conversion of ammonia to nitrogen gas through microbial nitrification and denitrification. The process-based constructed wetland treated the simulated produced water to meet stringent discharge requirements (less than 1.2 mg/L ammonia-N). Clinoptilolite, a zeolite mineral, was evaluated for use in constructed wetlands to increase ammonia sorption and nitrification activity. Clinoptilolite increased wetland ammonia sorption capacity and served as a microbial carrier for nitrifying bacteria when ranges …

Mapping The 3d Surface Potential In Bi2se3, Chris Mann, Damien West, Ireneusz Miotkowski, Yong P. Chen, Shengbai Zhang, Chih-Kang Shih Aug 2013

Mapping The 3d Surface Potential In Bi2se3, Chris Mann, Damien West, Ireneusz Miotkowski, Yong P. Chen, Shengbai Zhang, Chih-Kang Shih

Birck and NCN Publications

Bi2Se3 initially emerged as a particularly promising host of topological physics. However, in actual materials, several issues have been uncovered including strong surface band bending and potential fluctuations. To investigate these concerns, we study nominally stoichiometric Bi2Se3 using scanning tunnelling microscopy. Here we identify two distinct distributions of Bi-Se antisites that act as nanometer-scale sensors for the surface band-bending field. To confirm this, we examine bulk Cu-doped Bi2Se3 and demonstrate a significantly reduced surface band-bending field. In addition, we find that in the case of unintentionally doped Bi2Se3, lateral fluctuations of the Dirac point can be directly correlated with specific …

Vascular Reactivity Of Immature Arterialized Capillaries, Sara Hellstrom Aug 2013

Vascular Reactivity Of Immature Arterialized Capillaries, Sara Hellstrom

Biomedical Engineering

Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) is a globally prevalent cardiovascular disease in which atherosclerotic plaques narrow arterial lumen diameters and restrict blood flow to down stream tissues. The impact of these occlusions can be mitigated by collateral vessels that connect parallel arterial branches and act as natural bypasses to maintain perfusion. Some patients with PAOD may not have robust collateral networks to accommodate ischemic tissues in the event of an occlusion and, therefore, may be more susceptible to hypoxia and tissue necrosis. In animal models that lack collateral arterioles, capillaries can arterialize and form functional collaterals; however, in the early …

Design And Optimization Of A Railroad Conductive Suspension Element Pad Composed Of Thermoplastic Polyurethane And Carbon Black, Ruben Suarez Jr. Aug 2013

Design And Optimization Of A Railroad Conductive Suspension Element Pad Composed Of Thermoplastic Polyurethane And Carbon Black, Ruben Suarez Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The AdapterPlus™ Pad, made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), is used to enhance steering and prevent metal-to-metal contact between the railcar side frame and the bearing adapter. Although the AdapterPlus™ Pad acts as a pedestal liner in the suspension assembly, it must allow electric current to flow from the rail, through the bearing adapter wall to the side frame in order to activate a solenoid air valve that releases cargo gates. Currently, the pad uses copper inserts that allow current through. Because the Adapter Plus™ Pad is subject to large dynamic loads, the copper inserts permanently deform losing contact and cutting …
