Plastics For Designers, Colburn L. Jones Aug 2013

Plastics For Designers, Colburn L. Jones

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Plastics for Designers is a basic survey of the industry of plastics specifically written to address the questions and needs of the industrial designer. It is interesting that most people understand and are much more familiar with materials such as wood, metal, glass, stone, etc., than they are with plastics. This is quite amazing when we consider how much we surround ourselves with the very substance of which we are so ignorant. For the industrial designer this unfamiliarity with plastics is an especially vulnerable position as the number of products specifying the use of plastic grows exponentially. It is therefore …

Numerical Simulation Of Vortex-Induced Vibration Of Two Circular Cylinders Of Different Diameters At Low Reynolds Number, Ming Zhao, Guirong Yan

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two-Degree-Of-Freedom Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) of Two Rigidly Coupled Circular Cylinders of Different Diameters at a Low Reynolds Number of 250 is Investigated Numerically. While the Diameter Ratio and the Mass Ratio Are Kept Constant, the Study is Focused on the Effect of the Position Angle of the Small Cylinder on the Lock-In Regime of the VIV. Simulations Are Carried Out for Position Angles Α of the Small Cylinder Ranging from 0° to 180° with an Interval of 22.5° and the Reduced Velocities Ranging from 1 to 15 with an Increment of 1. in Order to Find the Effect of the …

Single-Mode Tunable Laser Emission In The Single-Exciton Regime From Colloidal Nanocrystals, Christos Grivas, Chunyong Li, Peristera Andreakou, Pengfei Wang, Ming Ding, Gilberto Brambilla, Liberato Manna, Pavlos Lagoudakis

Articles

Whispering-gallery-mode resonators have been extensively used in conjunction with different materials for the development of a variety of photonic devices. Among the latter, hybrid structures, consisting of dielectric microspheres and colloidal core/shell semiconductor nanocrystals as gain media, have attracted interest for the development of microlasers and studies of cavity quantum electrodynamic effects. Here we demonstrate single-exciton, single-mode, spectrally tuned lasing from ensembles of optical antenna-designed, colloidal core/shell CdSe/CdS quantum rods deposited on silica microspheres. We obtain singleexciton emission by capitalizing on the band structure of the specific core/shell architecture that strongly localizes holes in the core, and the two-dimensional quantum …

High Memory Passive Rfid Tags With Multimodal Sensor Design And Application To Asset Monitoring In-Transit, Haifeng Niu, S. Jagannathan Aug 2013

High Memory Passive Rfid Tags With Multimodal Sensor Design And Application To Asset Monitoring In-Transit, Haifeng Niu, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, new passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags with multimodal sensors and a high on-tag memory is proposed. First, the features preferred on the new passive RFID tags are motivated followed by a detailed description on the design and fabrication of the tags. Next, the performance of the tags in terms of read range is evaluated. The experiments results show that proposed tags have a range of 5.8 meters when all sensors are disabled while the range reduces when sensors are enabled. However, it is demonstrated that the range can be enhanced to 8 meters by using energy …

Reconstruction Of Long Horizontal-Path Images Under Anisoplanatic Conditions Using Multiframe Blind Deconvolution, Glen E. Archer, Jeremy P. Bos, Michael Roggemann Aug 2013

Reconstruction Of Long Horizontal-Path Images Under Anisoplanatic Conditions Using Multiframe Blind Deconvolution, Glen E. Archer, Jeremy P. Bos, Michael Roggemann

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

All optical systems that operate in or through the atmosphere suffer from turbulence induced image blur. Both military and civilian surveillance, gun sighting, and target identification systems are interested in terrestrial imaging over very long horizontal paths, but atmospheric turbulence can blur the resulting images beyond usefulness. This work explores the mean square error (MSE) performance of a multiframe blind deconvolution (MFBD) technique applied under anisoplanatic conditions for both Gaussian and Poisson noise model assumptions. The technique is evaluated for use in reconstructing images of scenes corrupted by turbulence in long horizontal-path imaging scenarios. Performance is evaluated via the reconstruction …

Identification Of Markov Processes Within A Wind Turbine Array Boundary Layer, Matthew Scott Melius Aug 2013

Identification Of Markov Processes Within A Wind Turbine Array Boundary Layer, Matthew Scott Melius

Dissertations and Theses

The Markovianity within a wind turbine array boundary layer is explored for data taken in a wind tunnel containing a model wind turbine array. A stochastic analysis of the data is carried out using Markov chain theory. The data were obtained via hot-wire anemometry thus providing point velocity statistics. The theory of Markovian processes is applied to obtain a statistical description of longitudinal velocity increments inside the turbine wake using conditional probability density functions. It is found that two and three point conditional probability density functions are similar for scale differences larger than the Taylor micro-scale. This result is quantified …

Analysis Of Prosthetic Leg Shock Absorption And Structure, Russell Dibb, David Williams, Dr. Mark Colton Aug 2013

Analysis Of Prosthetic Leg Shock Absorption And Structure, Russell Dibb, David Williams, Dr. Mark Colton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of the prosthetic leg project was to research and design a below-the-knee prosthetic leg that could be used in developing countries. Many prosthetic legs that are currently on the market are very expensive and difficult to manufacture in undeveloped areas of the world. The engineering challenges that the prosthetic leg design addressed include a device that is 1) capable of being manufactured at a low cost ($100-$500), 2) simply and easily reproducible in a developing country, 3) durable enough to hold up to the vigorous conditions that exist in a developing country, and 4) able to effectively modeling …

Parametric Human Spine Model, Simeon Smith, Dr. Anton Bowden Aug 2013

Parametric Human Spine Model, Simeon Smith, Dr. Anton Bowden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Three-dimensional computer models are commonly used to understand and analyze pathological conditions of the spine. Models of the spine are most beneficial when they match each patient’s spinal geometry. Currently, making a model for a specific patient is a long, multi-step process that must be started anew for each person. The goal of this project was to create a parametric model that can be used to instantly generate the spinal geometry of any particular patient based on the input of a few controlling parameters.

Development Of A Simple Manufacturing Process For A Prosthetic Leg, Kyle Smith, Dr. Mark Colton Aug 2013

Development Of A Simple Manufacturing Process For A Prosthetic Leg, Kyle Smith, Dr. Mark Colton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this project was to develop a simple process to manufacture a useful and affordable prosthetic leg to be made available to below-the-knee amputees in a sub-Saharan African country. This project was motivated by a desire for learning and experience and also by humanitarian and social entrepreneurship ideals. The project was carried out as a joint effort by a larger research team composed of members of the BYU Biomedical Engineering Club. As this was a joint team effort, many of the tasks detailed in this report were shared between several team members. Currently, the team has identified partners …
