Exploiting Set-Level Non-Uniformity Of Capacity Demand To Enhance Cmp Cooperative Caching, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad C. Seth
Exploiting Set-Level Non-Uniformity Of Capacity Demand To Enhance Cmp Cooperative Caching, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad C. Seth
School of Computing: Technical Reports
As the Memory Wall remains a bottleneck for Chip Multiprocessors (CMP), the effective management of CMP last level caches becomes of paramount importance in minimizing expensive off-chip memory accesses. For the CMPs with private last level caches, Cooperative Caching (CC) has been proposed to enable capacity sharing among private caches by spilling an evicted block from one cache to another. But this eviction-driven CC does not necessarily promote cache performance since it implicitly favors the applications full of block evictions regardless of their real capacity demand. The recent Dynamic Spill-Receive (DSR) paradigm improves cooperative caching by prioritizing applications with higher …
Polarization Diversity For Indoor Wireless Communications, Tadeusz Wysocki, Jason Uher, Beata J. Wysocki
Polarization Diversity For Indoor Wireless Communications, Tadeusz Wysocki, Jason Uher, Beata J. Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
As the demand for high wireless data rates in indoor environments grows, we must find new ways to increase the performance of wireless links in multi-path fading. One common way to do this is to add diversity in the form of spatial or temporal diversity through the application of space-time block codes (STBCs). Recently, a method for combining STBCs with polarization diversity has been presented that allows for modeling the changes in polarization with quaternion numbers, introducing space-time-polarization block codes (STPBCs). This presentation shows some results from an initial investigation into the quality of cross polarized channels as compared to …

On The Issue Of Decoupled Decoding Of Codes Derived From Quaternion Orthogonal Designs, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki, Sarah Spence Adams
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) have been previously introduced as a basis for orthogonal space-time polarization block codes (OSTPBCs). This note will serve to correct statements concerning the optimality of a decoupled maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding algorithm. It will be shown that when compared to coupled decoding, the decoupled decoding is only optimal in certain cases. This raises several open problems concerning the decoding of OSTPBCs.
Effect Of Sample Timing On Ls Channel Estimation, Jason Uher, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki
Effect Of Sample Timing On Ls Channel Estimation, Jason Uher, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
As block coding and intelligent receiver combining in multi-antenna systems moves from the theoretical into the physical domain, it is necessary to apply robust analysis to the problems encountered with the development of real radio systems that are often overlooked during theoretical development of methods and processes. One such problem is the lack of synchronization between the transmitter and receiver sampling clocks. This text attempts to analyze the significance of poorly correcting for differences in the transmit and receive sample clocks by simulating the BER of an Alamouti space-time coded system under a variety of sample rates and clock offsets. …

Pre-Filtering Of Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum In Dense Multipath Channels, Won Mee Jang, Lim Nguyen
Pre-Filtering Of Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum In Dense Multipath Channels, Won Mee Jang, Lim Nguyen
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
We present pre-filtering methods of self-encoded spread spectrum (SESS) in dense multipath channels. SESS eliminates the need for traditional transmit and receive pseudo noise (PN) code generators. In this paper, we propose multipath management of SESS in dense multipath urban environments. We propose a transmitter pre-filtering method that retains only good paths that contribute to the data decision positively at the receiver, and eliminates undesirable paths. The proposed technique significantly improves the system performance while increasing the transmit power moderately.
Ergodic Capacity Of Cooperative Networks Using Adaptive Transmission And Selection Combining, Bao Q. Vo-Nguyen, Trung Q. Duong, Nguyen N. Tran
Ergodic Capacity Of Cooperative Networks Using Adaptive Transmission And Selection Combining, Bao Q. Vo-Nguyen, Trung Q. Duong, Nguyen N. Tran
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Closed-form expressions for ergodic capacity of repetition-based cooperative networks under adaptive transmission with selection combining are derived. According to the changing channel conditions, the source adapts its rate and/or power level while the relays simply amplify and then forward the received signals. Specifically, three different adaptive techniques are investigated under the assumption of independent Rayleigh fading channels: optimal simultaneous power and rate adaptation (OPRA), constant power with optimal rate adaptation (OPA) and channel inversion with fixed rate (TIFR). Among them, for an arbitrary number of relays, TIFR gives the worst channel capacity; OPRA gives the best channel capacity and ORA …
Steady-Periodic Heating Of A Cylinder, Kevin D. Cole, Paul E. Crittenden
Steady-Periodic Heating Of A Cylinder, Kevin D. Cole, Paul E. Crittenden
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Steady periodic heating is an important experimental technique for measurement of thermal properties. In these methods the thermal properties are deduced from a systematic comparison between the data (such as temperature) and a detailed thermal model. This paper addresses steady-periodic heat transfer on cylindrical geometries with application to thermal-property measurements. The method of Green’s functions is used to provide a comprehensive collection of exact analytical expressions for temperature in cylinders. Five kinds of boundary conditions are treated for one-, two-, and three-dimensional geometries. For some geometries an alternate form of the Green’s function is given, which can be used for …
The Navigation Potential Of Ground Feature Tracking, Guner Mutlu
The Navigation Potential Of Ground Feature Tracking, Guner Mutlu
Theses and Dissertations
This research effort examines the reduction of error in inertial navigation aided by vision. This is part of an effort focused on navigation in a GPS denied environment. The navigation concept examined here consists of two main steps. First, extract the position of a tracked ground object using vision and geo-locate it in 3 dimensional navigation frame. In this first step multiple positions of the UAV are assumed known; think of a synthetic aperture. The only information about the tracked ground objects/features is the unit vector that points to the objects from the center of the camera. Two such vectors …

Changes In Structural Health Monitoring System Capability Due To Aircraft Environmental Factors, Jeffrey D. Kuhn
Changes In Structural Health Monitoring System Capability Due To Aircraft Environmental Factors, Jeffrey D. Kuhn
Theses and Dissertations
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) promises to decrease the maintenance cost and increase the availability of aging aircraft fleets by fundamentally changing the way structural inspections are performed. But this promise can only be realized through the consistent and predictable performance of a SHM system throughout the entire remaining life of an aircraft. In a sensor-based SHM system, sensor signal changes are analyzed and interpreted to identify structural flaws. But aircraft environmental factors such as temperature fluctuations, cyclic strain and exposure to various aircraft fluids also have the potential to change SHM sensor signals, raising questions about long term SHM system …

Analysis And Modeling Of Motor Vehicle Crashes Involving Air Force Military Personnel, Antonios Markopoulos
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this thesis was to improve the data analysis of Motor Vehicle Crashes (MVCs). This thesis employed the Air Force Safety Center (AFSC) data, collected over 20 years, of MVCs in which US Air Force (USAF) military personnel are involved when off duty and off base. Categorical Data Analysis and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were applied to identify risk factors related to MVCs and influence the severity of injuries and those factors associated with the alcohol consumption before driving, and affect the number of lost workdays resulting from MVCs. Categorical Data Analysis showed that male USAF members …
Performance Flight Testing Of Small Electric Powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Jon N. Ostler, W. Jerry Bowman, Deryl O. Snyder, Timothy W. Mclain
Performance Flight Testing Of Small Electric Powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Jon N. Ostler, W. Jerry Bowman, Deryl O. Snyder, Timothy W. Mclain
Faculty Publications
Flight testing methods are developed to find the drag polar for small unmanned aerial vehicles powered by electric motors with fixed-pitch propellers. Wind tunnel testing was used to characterize the propeller-motor efficiency. The drag polar was constructed using data from flight tests. This drag polar was then used to find the following performance parameters: maximum velocity, minimum velocity, velocity for maximum range, velocity for maximum endurance, maximum rate of climb, maximum climb angle, minimum turn radius, maximum turn rate, and maximum bank angle. The developed flight testing methods are used to characterize the performance of a small UAV.
A Practical Approach To Disturbance Decoupling Control, Qing Zheng, Zhongzhou Chen, Zhiqiang Gao
A Practical Approach To Disturbance Decoupling Control, Qing Zheng, Zhongzhou Chen, Zhiqiang Gao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, a unique dynamic disturbance decoupling control (DDC) strategy, based on the active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) framework, is proposed for square multivariable systems. With the proposed method, it is shown that a largely unknown square multivariable system is readily decoupled by actively estimating and rejecting the effects of both the internal plant dynamics and external disturbances. By requiring as little information on plant model as possible, the intention is to make the new method practical. The stability analysis shows that both the estimation error and the closed-loop tracking error are bounded and the error upper bounds …

Detecting Automotive Exhaust Gas Based On Fuzzy Inference System, Li. Shujin, Ming Bai, Quan Wang, Bo Chen, Xiaobing Zhao, Ting Yang, Zhaoxia Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper proposes a method of detecting automotive exhaust gas based on fuzzy logic inference after analyzing the principle of the infrared automobile exhaust gas analyzer and the influence of the environmental temperature on analyzer. This paper analyses the measurement error caused by environmental temperature, and then makes a non-linear error correction of temperature for the infrared sensor using fuzzy inference. The results of simulation have clearly demonstrated that the proposed fuzzy compensation scheme is better than the non-fuzzy method.

Admission Control For Differentiated Services In Future Generation Cdma Networks, Hwee-Pink Tan, Rudesindo Núñez-Queija, Adriana F. Gabor, Onno J. Boxma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Future Generation CDMA wireless systems, e.g., 3G, can simultaneously accommodate flow transmissions of users with widely heterogeneous applications. As radio resources are limited, we propose an admission control rule that protects users with stringent transmission bit-rate requirements (“streaming traffic”) while offering sufficient capacity over longer time intervals to delay-tolerant users (“elastic traffic”). While our strategy may not satisfy classical notions of fairness, we aim to reduce congestion and increase overall throughput of elastic users. Using time-scale decomposition, we develop approximations to evaluate the performance of our differentiated admission control strategy to support integrated services with transmission bit-rate requirements in a …

Bit Error Rates For Ultrafast Apd Based Optical Receivers: Exact And Large Deviation Based Asymptotic Approaches, Peng Sun, Majeed M. Hayat, Abhik K. Das
Bit Error Rates For Ultrafast Apd Based Optical Receivers: Exact And Large Deviation Based Asymptotic Approaches, Peng Sun, Majeed M. Hayat, Abhik K. Das
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Exact analysis as well as asymptotic analysis, based on large-deviation theory (LDT), are developed to compute the bit-error rate (BER) for ultrafast avalanche-photodiode (APD) based optical receivers assuming on-off keying and direct detection. The effects of intersymbol interference (ISI), resulting from the APD's stochastic avalanche buildup time, as well as the APD's dead space are both included in the analysis. ISI becomes a limiting factor as the transmission rate approaches the detector's bandwidth, in which case the bit duration becomes comparable to APD's avalanche buildup time. Further, the effect of dead space becomes significant in high-speed APDs that employ thin …

On-Line Realtime Water Quality Monitoring And Control For Swimming Pools, Paul Duffy, Gerard Woods, Sean O'Hogain, James Walsh, C. Caplier
Conference Papers
Effective swimming pool water quality monitoring and control systems are important to safeguard public health and for bather comfort. Most Irish swimming pool monitoring systems rely heavily on manual methods for sampling, testing and data recording of important parameters. Microbiological testing is infrequent and results can often take days. The goal of this research is to develop a water quality monitoring and control system with real time data logging, automatic data analysis, remote monitoring and control, microbiological sampling capabilities and online connectivity. National Instruments hardware and its software package LabView form the basis of the monitoring and control system. Several …

Distributed POMDPs provide an expressive framework for modeling multiagent collaboration problems, but NEXPComplete complexity hinders their scalability and application in real-world domains. This paper introduces a subclass of distributed POMDPs, and TREMOR, an algorithm to solve such distributed POMDPs. The primary novelty of TREMOR is that agents plan individually with a single agent POMDP solver and use social model shaping to implicitly coordinate with other agents. Experiments demonstrate that TREMOR can provide solutions orders of magnitude faster than existing algorithms while achieving comparable, or even superior, solution quality.
Assessment Of Electrospinning As An In-House Fabrication Technique For Blood Vessel Mimic Cellular Scaffolding, Colby M. James
Assessment Of Electrospinning As An In-House Fabrication Technique For Blood Vessel Mimic Cellular Scaffolding, Colby M. James
Master's Theses
Intravascular devices, such as stents, must be rigorously tested before they can be approved by the FDA. This includes bench top in vitro testing to determine biocompatibility, and animal model testing to ensure safety and efficacy. As an intermediate step, a blood vessel mimic (BVM) testing method has been developed that mimics the three dimensional structure of blood vessels using a perfusion bioreactor system, human derived endothelial cells, and a biocompatible polymer scaffold used to support growth of the blood vessel cells. The focus of this thesis was to find an in-house fabrication method capable of making cellular scaffolding for …
Investigation Of The Geotechnical Properties Of Municipal Solid Waste As A Function Of Placement Conditions, Wilson W. Wong
Investigation Of The Geotechnical Properties Of Municipal Solid Waste As A Function Of Placement Conditions, Wilson W. Wong
Master's Theses
An investigation of the variability of engineering properties of municipal solid waste as a function of placement conditions was conducted. Limited data have been reported for the engineering properties of municipal solid waste (MSW) as a function of placement conditions. Wastes have high variability of engineering properties due to heterogeneity in composition and component size; influence from time based effects; and presence of compressible solids. Control of moisture content of MSW at the time of waste placement provides opportunity for increased capacity at a given landfill site due to higher compacted unit weight as well as for control of other …
Hole-Type Aerospike Compound Nozzle Thrust Vectoring, Stanley Ikuo Beebe
Hole-Type Aerospike Compound Nozzle Thrust Vectoring, Stanley Ikuo Beebe
Master's Theses
Compound aerospike nozzles were designed and tested as part of an ongoing
experimental study to determine the feasibility of thrust vectoring an aerospike
nozzle with the addition of a secondary port. Earlier phases of the study have
indicated that a compound aerospike nozzle could provide sufficient thrust
vectoring. The addition of a hole-type secondary port was found to provide
effective thrust vectoring.
Experiments were carried out to determine the effects of secondary port size,
secondary port inlet geometry and compound aerospike nozzle chamber
pressure. Results show good predictability, axisymmetric flow, and emphasize
the importance of a radius on secondary port …

The Interaction Between Throttling And Thrust Vectoring Of An Annular Aerospike Nozzle, David Michael Imbaratto
Master's Theses
Applied research and testing has been conducted at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo High-pressure Blow-Down facility to study the affects of throttling in a thrust-vectored aerospike nozzle. This study supports the ongoing research at Cal Poly to effectively thrust vector a hybrid rocket motor. Such thrust vectoring is achieved by small secondary ports in the nozzle body that are perpendicular to the main nozzle. The testing conducted included characterizing and comparing the performance of a straight aerospike nozzle to that of a thrust-vectored aerospike nozzle. Throttling effects on the aerospike nozzle in an unvectored and in a vectored configuration …

This project encompasses the design of a pretreatment protocol for blood serum and adaption of that protocol to a microfluidic environment in order to optimize key sample characteristics, namely pH, conductivity, and viscosity, to enable on-chip electrokinetic separations. The two major parts of this project include (1) designing a pretreatment protocol to optimize key parameters of the sample solution within a target range and (2) designing /fabricating a microchip that will effectively combine the sample solution with the appropriate buffers to replicate the same bench-scale protocol on the micro-scale.
Biomarker detection in complex samples such as blood necessitates appropriate sample …
Stability Criteria For Spontaneously Pulsing Gas Lasers, Pitak Chenkosol, Lee W. Casperson
Stability Criteria For Spontaneously Pulsing Gas Lasers, Pitak Chenkosol, Lee W. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Low-threshold spontaneous pulsations are known to occur in the output beams of certain high-gain gas lasers, and good agreement between the experimental observations and numerical models has been achieved. There have also been several analytical studies of threshold criteria for spontaneously pulsing lasers. However, the analytical studies are mostly not applicable to the lasers in which the pulsations have been observed. Stability criteria for high-gain gas lasers are derived in this study, and these criteria are compared with a previously modeled gas laser instability.

Directional Dual-Band Slot Antenna With Dual-Bandgap High-Impedance-Surface Reflector, Xiulong Bao, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann
Articles
A compact dual-band high-impedance-surface EBG structure is employed as a reflector for a dual-band annular-slot antenna. The reflector comprises an array of miniaturized EBG cells which utilizes square patches augmented by four S-shaped corrugated arms to reduce the resonant frequency of the proposed EBG structure. In order to broaden the bandwidth and adjust the frequency ratio for the dual-band EBG structure, a log-periodic spacing between the S-shaped strips is introduced. The combination of microstrip-fed annular slot and EBG reflector provides directional properties for both frequency bands with reduced size and low-profile.
