Simple Ml Detector For Multiple Antennas Communication System, Ahmad Taqwa, Soegijardjo Soegijoko, Sugihartono Sugihartono, Suhartono Tjondronegoro

Makara Journal of Technology

Simple ML Detector for Multiple Antennas Communication System. In order to support providing broadband wireless communication services against limited and expensive frequency bandwidth, we have to develop a bandwidth efficient system. Therefore, in this paper we propose a closed-loop MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) system using ML (Maximum Likelihood) detector to optimize capacity and to increase system performance. What is especially exciting about the benefits offered by MIMO is that a high capacity and performance can be attained without additional frequency-spectral resource. The grand scenario of this concept is the attained advantages of transformation matrices having capability to allocate transmitted signals power suit …

Increasing Productivity In Irrigated Agriculture: Agronomic Constraints And Hydrological Realities, Chris Perry, Pasquale Steduto, Richard C. Allen, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Irrigation is widely criticised as a profligate and wasteful user of water, especially in watershort areas. Improvements to irrigation management are proposed as a way of increasing agricultural production and reducing the demand for water. The terminology for this debate is often flawed, failing to clarify the actual disposition of water used in irrigation into evaporation, transpiration, and return flows that may, depending on local conditions, be recoverable. Once the various flows are properly identified, the existing literature suggests that the scope for saving consumptive use of water through advanced irrigation technologies is often limited. Further, the interactions between evaporation …

A Broad Prospective On Fuzzy Transforms: From Gauging Accuracy Of Quantity Estimates To Gauging Accuracy And Resolution Of Measuring Physical Fields, Vladik Kreinovich, Irina Perfilieva Nov 2009

A Broad Prospective On Fuzzy Transforms: From Gauging Accuracy Of Quantity Estimates To Gauging Accuracy And Resolution Of Measuring Physical Fields, Vladik Kreinovich, Irina Perfilieva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Fuzzy transform is a new type of function transforms that has been successfully used in different application. In this paper, we provide a broad prospective on fuzzy transform. Specifically, we show that fuzzy transform naturally appears when, in addition to measurement uncertainty, we also encounter another type of localization uncertainty: that the measured value may come not only from the desired location x, but also from the nearby locations.

From Gauging Accuracy Of Quantity Estimates To Gauging Accuracy And Resolution Of Measuring Physical Fields, Vladik Kreinovich, Irina Perfilieva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

For a numerical physical quantity v, because of the measurement imprecision, the measurement result V is, in general, different from the actual value v of this quantity. Depending on what we know about the measurement uncertainty d = V - v, we can use different techniques for dealing with this imprecision: probabilistic, interval, etc.

When we measure the values v(x) of physical fields at different locations x (and/or different moments of time), then, in addition to the same measurement uncertainty, we also encounter another type of localization uncertainty: that the measured value may come not only from the desired location …

Model Fusion Under Probabilistic And Interval Uncertainty, With Application To Earth Sciences, Omar Ochoa, Aaron A. Velasco, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the most important studies of the earth sciences is that of the Earth's interior structure. There are many sources of data for Earth tomography models: first-arrival passive seismic data (from the actual earthquakes), first-arrival active seismic data (from the seismic experiments), gravity data, and surface waves. Currently, each of these datasets is processed separately, resulting in several different Earth models that have specific coverage areas, different spatial resolutions and varying degrees of accuracy. These models often provide complimentary geophysical information on earth structure (P and S wave velocity structure).

Combining the information derived from each requires a joint …

Reduced Uncertainty Of Ground Motion Prediction Equations Through Bayesian Variance Analysis, Robb E.S. Moss Nov 2009

Reduced Uncertainty Of Ground Motion Prediction Equations Through Bayesian Variance Analysis, Robb E.S. Moss

Civil and Environmental Engineering

A ground motion prediction equation estimates the mean and variance of ground shaking with distance from an earthquake source. Current relationships use regression techniques that treat the input variables or parameters as exact, neglecting the uncertainties associated with the measurement of shear wave velocity, moment magnitude, and site-to-source distance. This parameter uncertainty propagates through the regression procedure and results in model uncertainty that overestimates the inherent variability of the ground motion. This report discusses methods of estimating the statistical uncertainty of the input parameters, and procedures for incorporating the parameter uncertainty into the regression of ground motion data using a …

Meshscan: Performance Of Passive Handoff And Active Handoff, Yin Chen, Karol Kowalik, Mark Davis Nov 2009

Meshscan: Performance Of Passive Handoff And Active Handoff, Yin Chen, Karol Kowalik, Mark Davis

Conference papers

A core problem of fast handoff is when handoff should perform and which Mesh Node (MN) should associated with. We have developed a fast handoff management scheme called MeshScan to provide a novel use of channel scanning latency, by employing open system authentication in both Passive Handoff and Active Handoff. This scheme comprises three steps: firstly a client device takes advantage of the Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) architecture to maintain a list of active MNs. Secondly MeshScan Handoff Sensor performs handoff when it receives a disassociation management frame from the serving MN or when the measured signal strength from the …

Microalgal Biomass For Greenhouse Gas Reductions: Potential For Replacement Of Fossil Fuels And Animal Feeds, D. E. Brune, Tryg Lundquist, J. R. Benemann

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Microalgal biomass production offers a number of advantages over conventional biomass production, including higher productivities, use of otherwise nonproductive land, reuse and recovery of waste nutrients, use of saline or brackish waters, and reuse of CO2 from power-plant flue gas or similar sources. Microalgal biomass production and utilization offers potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) avoidance by providing biofuel replacement of fossil fuels and carbon-neutral animal feeds. This paper presents an initial analysis of the potential for GHG avoidance using a proposed algal biomass production system coupled to recovery of flue-gas CO2 combined with waste sludge and/or animal manure …

Wood Chip Heating For Commercial Buildings In Ireland: An Analysis Of Supply Methods And Financial Viability, Ciaran Berkeley

Masters

Ireland has three central issues regarding the supply and use of fuel and energy: import dependency; competitiveness; and greenhouse gases emissions. Ireland is ranked as one of the most import dependent states in the EU, with over 90% of its fuel sourced fiom abroad [IAEA, 20051. Combined with rapidly fluctuating oil and gas wsts and uncertainty with future supply, it is essential that Ireland find a more secure and sustainable alternative to fossil hels. Wood chip represents one such alternative energy source since it is locally produced and considered to be carbon-neutral. The main objective of this research is to …

Long-Term Changes In Aluminum Fractions Of Drainage Waters In Two Forest Catchments With Contrasting Lithology, Pavel Krám, Jakub Hruška, Charles T. Driscoll, Chris E. Johnson, Filip Oulehle

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Aluminum (Al) chemistry was studied in soils and waters of two catchments covered by spruce (Picea abies) monocultures in the Czech Republic that represent geochemical end-members of terrestrial and aquatic sensitivity to acidic deposition. The acid-sensitive Lysina catchment, underlain by granite, was compared to the acid-resistant Pluhův Bor catchment on serpentine. Organically-bound Al was the largest pool of reactive soil Al at both sites. Very high median total Al (Alt) concentrations (40 μmol L−1) and inorganic monomeric Al (Ali) concentrations (27 μmol L−1) were observed in acidic (pH 4.0) stream water at Lysina in …

Nutrient And Bacterial Transport In Runoff From Soil And Pond Ash Amended Feedlot Surfaces, John E. Gilley, Jason R. Vogel, Elaine D. Berry, Roger Eigenberg, David B. Marx, Brian L. Woodbury

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The addition of pond ash (fly ash that has been placed in evaporative ponds and subsequently dewatered) to feedlot surfaces provides a healthier environment for livestock and economic advantages for the feedlot operator. However, the water quality effects of pond ash amended surfaces are not well understood. The objectives of this field investigation were to: (1) compare feedlot soil properties, and nutrient and bacterial transport in runoff, from pond ash amended surfaces and soil surfaces; (2) compare the effects of unconsolidated surface materials (USM) (loose manure pack) and consolidated subsurface materials (CSM) (compacted manure and underlying layers) on nutrient and …

Generating Integrated-Circuit Patterns Via Cutting And Stitching Of Gratings, Lin Zhao, Yi Xuan, Minghao Qi Nov 2009

Generating Integrated-Circuit Patterns Via Cutting And Stitching Of Gratings, Lin Zhao, Yi Xuan, Minghao Qi

Birck and NCN Publications

Integrated-circuit patterns, such as those of transistor gates, usually consist of multivertex paths whose line segments are along two orthogonal directions. Such patterns are sometimes called "Manhattan structures" and are typically designed to achieve the highest packing density with a given linewidth. Owing to their arbitrary shapes, these patterns are predominantly generated via electron-beam lithography, a serial process which is inherently slow compared to parallel processes. Moreover, throughput is further reduced with the necessity of proximity correction in electron-beam lithography. On the other hand, interference lithography is a low-cost, parallel process that can achieve small linewidths and pitches, yet the …

Thermodynamics Of Hydrogen Vacancies In Mgh2 From First-Principles Calculations And Grand-Canonical Statistical Mechanics, R Grau-Crespo, K C. Smith, Timothy Fisher, N H. De Leeuw, U V. Waghmare Nov 2009

Thermodynamics Of Hydrogen Vacancies In Mgh2 From First-Principles Calculations And Grand-Canonical Statistical Mechanics, R Grau-Crespo, K C. Smith, Timothy Fisher, N H. De Leeuw, U V. Waghmare

Birck and NCN Publications

Ab initio calculations and statistical mechanics are combined to elucidate the thermodynamics of H vacancies in MgH2. A general method based on a grand-canonical ensemble of defect configurations is presented to model the exchange of hydrogen between crystalline MgH2 and gas-phase H-2. We find that, even at the lowest hydrogen partial pressures at which the hydride phase is stable, MgH2 is capable of accommodating only very small concentrations of hydrogen vacancies. These vacancies are mainly isolated rather than forming clusters, contrary to what is expected from a simple energetic analysis.

Optimizing The Release And Methylation Of Bacterial Endospore Dipicolinic Acid, Aaron N. Nackos Nov 2009

Optimizing The Release And Methylation Of Bacterial Endospore Dipicolinic Acid, Aaron N. Nackos

Theses and Dissertations

Rapid, portable detection of biological threat agents such as Bacillus anthracis endospores (“spores”) is extremely important given the real and perceived threats of bioterrorism. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an excellent general means for chemical detection, although special sample preparation and specialized equipment are required to employ GC-MS for detecting biological agents such as spores in the field. A GC sample introduction probe consisting of a helical wire that can be retracted inside a syringe needle, called a coiled wire filament (CWF), was employed as a simple, passively-heated means to introduce the mixture of spores plus reagents for thermochemolysis methylation …

A Domain Adaptive Stochastic Collocation Approach For Analysis Of Mems Under Uncertainties, Nitin Agarwal, N R. Aluru Nov 2009

A Domain Adaptive Stochastic Collocation Approach For Analysis Of Mems Under Uncertainties, Nitin Agarwal, N R. Aluru

Other Nanotechnology Publications

This work proposes a domain adaptive stochastic collocation approach for uncertainty quantification, suitable for effective handling of discontinuities or sharp variations in the random domain. The basic idea of the proposed methodology is to adaptively decompose the random domain into subdomains. Within each subdomain, a sparse grid interpolant is constructed using the classical Smolyak construction [S. Smolyak, Quadrature and interpo- lation formulas for tensor products of certain classes of functions, Soviet Math. Dokl. 4 (1963) 240–243], to approximate the stochastic solution locally. The adaptive strategy is governed by the hierarchical surpluses, which are computed as part of the interpolation procedure. …

Fabrication Of Spherical Cao-Sro-Zno-Sio2 Particles By Sol-Gel Processing, Ill Yong Kim, Mark R. Towler, Anthony Wren, Chikara Ohtsuki Nov 2009

Fabrication Of Spherical Cao-Sro-Zno-Sio2 Particles By Sol-Gel Processing, Ill Yong Kim, Mark R. Towler, Anthony Wren, Chikara Ohtsuki

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study was concerned with the fabrication of ceramic CaO-SrO-ZnO-SiO2 spherical particles, which are novel candidates for the glass phase in glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs). GPCs made from these glasses have potential as bone cements because, unlike conventional GPCs, they do not contain aluminum ions, which inhibit the calcification of hydroxyapatite in the body. The glass phase of GPCs require a controllable glass morphology and particle size distribution. Sol-gel processing can potentially be used to fabricate homogenous ceramic particles with controlled morphology. However, a thorough study on preparation conditions of spherical CaO-SrO-ZnO-SiO2 particles by sol-gel processing has, to …

Characterisation And Mechanical Testing Of Hydrothermally Treated Ha/Zro2 Composites, D. J. Curran, T. J. Fleming, G. Kawachi, C. Ohtsuki, Mark R. Towler

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hydrothermal treatment is traditionally employed to improve the sinterability of powder compacts by reducing porosity and increasing apparent density. The effect of hydrothermal treatment on green powder compacts has been assessed in order to better understand how treatment may affect the sinter ability of the bodies. Laboratory synthesized nano sized hydroxyapatite (HA) and a commercial zirconia (ZrO2) powder have been ball milled together to create composite mixtures containing 0-5 wt% ZrO2 loadings. Disc shaped bodies have been formed using uniaxial and subsequent isostatic pressure. The resultant coherent samples were subjected to hydrothermal treatment at either 120 or …
