Synthesis Of Surface Composites Using Friction Stir Processing, Bharat Gattu Jan 2009

Synthesis Of Surface Composites Using Friction Stir Processing, Bharat Gattu

Masters Theses

"Composite materials have an edge over monolithic materials due to higher strength/stiffness - to - density ratios, improved fatigue and wear resistance and better high temperature properties. Surface composites provide improved tribological properties such as wear resistance, friction coefficient and corrosion resistance. Friction stir processing (FSP) which originated from friction stir welding (FSW - a method for joining aluminum alloys) is a solid state technique to modify the microstructure of the alloys. During FSP the frictional heat generated at the tool - work piece interface plasticizes the material allowing it to flow around the pin. The combined effect of the …

Anchorage And Bond Characteristics Of Externally Bonded Frp Laminates Used For Shear Strengthening Of Rc And Pc Girders, Carlos Andres Ortega Ordonez

Masters Theses

"In the last three decades, the use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials to strengthen structures externally has emerged as one of the most promising technologies in materials and structural engineering, and these materials have been gaining popularity in the civil engineering community. Externally bonded FRP sheets and laminates have been used successfully to increase flexural and shear capacity. The overall performance of the strengthened system depends heavily on the quality of the bond between the concrete and the FRP laminate. Low bond strength can cause delamination at the fiber-matrix interface and at the FRP laminate-concrete interface. As a result, …

Investigation Of Selective Laser Sintering Of Zirconium Diboride Parts, Shashwatashish Pattnaik

Masters Theses

"This research investigates the fabrication of three-dimensional parts from ZrB₂, an ultra high temperature ceramic (UHTC), using the selective laser sintering (SLS) process. Based on an experimental investigation, optimum values for the SLS parameters (scan speed, laser power, energy density, scan spacing and layer thickness), used on a DTM Sinterstation 2000, were determined to build green ZrB₂ parts with high integrity and sharp geometrical features. This was done by melting the polymer binder used to bond the ceramic particles layer-by-layer according to the cross-section of a CAD model. The use of a sacrificial plate to eliminate cracks in the bottom …

An Evolutionary Algorithm Approach To Actuated Signal Timing Optimization Under Lane-By-Lane Detection Condition, Eric G. Strack Jan 2009

An Evolutionary Algorithm Approach To Actuated Signal Timing Optimization Under Lane-By-Lane Detection Condition, Eric G. Strack

Masters Theses

"Motivated by the need to reduce congestion on the nation's roadway network, this research seeks to determine when a new detection scheme at actuated signalized intersections may help. This new detection scheme is called lane-by-lane detection. It "looks" at traffic in all lanes individually to determine the traffic volume on the roadway. Specifically, the problems addressed are investigating alternate signal timings and investigating the traffic volume's effect on performance of the detection scheme. For the alternate signal timings, an Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) was employed to identify the optimal signal timing. This algorithm creates signal timings and tests them in the …

Het-Cam For The Identification Of Ocular Irritancy In Seawater/Salt Water Sources, Alexander Clovis Winters

Masters Theses

"The Hens Egg Test on the Chorionallantoic Membrane (HET-CAM) is an ocular irritation test proposed to replace tradition ocular investigations such as the Draize eye test that has been criticized because of its use of animals. In this study, the ocular irritation potential of seawater and saltwater sources dosed with different disinfectants has been evaluated using the HET-CAM. The seawater and salt water tested was taken from the main show pools from three aquatic theme parks (San Diego, San Antonio, and Orlando). The three disinfectants considered were sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)₂), and ozone (O₃).

Three different HET-CAM methods …

Synthesis Of Best Practices In Transportation Security, Volume I: Vulnerability Assessment, Haritha Reddy Venna, Jon D. Fricker Jan 2009

Synthesis Of Best Practices In Transportation Security, Volume I: Vulnerability Assessment, Haritha Reddy Venna, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Part I of the research focused on developing a methodology to identify and evaluate the most critical and vulnerable INDOT assets. This method aims at obtaining an index that reflects the vulnerability and criticality of an asset on the basis of multiple performance criteria. This methodology was tested on the seven INDOT districts. Because not all the factors that influence the vulnerability do have same weight, the analytical hierarchical process is used to obtain the weights for the criteria. Countermeasures are suggested as a part of the research to reduce the vulnerability of a given asset based on its relevant …

Deflection Of A Viscoelastic Cantilever Under A Uniform Surface Stress: Applications To Static-Mode Microcantilever Sensors Undergoing Adsorption, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The equation governing the curvature of a viscoelastic microcantilever beam loaded with a uniform surface stress is derived. The present model is applicable to static-mode microcantilever sensors made with a rigid polymer, such as SU-8. An analytical solution to the differential equation governing the curvature is given for a specific surface stress representing adsorption of analyte onto the viscoelastic beam’s surface. The solution for the bending of the microcantilever shows that, in many cases, the use of Stoney’s equation to analyze stress-induced deflection of viscoelastic microcantilevers (in the present case due to surface analyte adsorption) can lead to poor predictions …

While some educators have adopted commercial off the-shelf games for use in the classroom, such games may not always meet the individual requirements of lecturers whose courses are tied to specific learning utcomes. An alternative is to capitalise on in-house expertise in Higher Education and create serious games through cross-disciplinary team projects. This paper outlines such a project within one Higher Education institution. It describes synergies created across disciplines as a result of the collaboration on game design and implementation. It looks at tensions generated between the pedagogical requirements (of lecturers), entertainment objectives (of games designers) and technical excellence (sought …

Charge Induced Enhancement Of Adsorption For Hydrogen Storage Materials, Xiang Sun Jan 2009

Charge Induced Enhancement Of Adsorption For Hydrogen Storage Materials, Xiang Sun

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The rising concerns about environmental pollution and global warming have facilitated research interest in hydrogen energy as an alternative energy source. To apply hydrogen for transportations, several issues have to be solved, within which hydrogen storage is the most critical problem. Lots of materials and devices have been developed; however, none is able to meet the DOE storage target. The primary issue for hydrogen physisorption is a weak interaction between hydrogen and the surface of solid materials, resulting negligible adsorption at room temperature. To solve this issue, there is a need to increase the interaction between the hydrogen molecules and …

Development Of Room Temperature Operating Single Electron Transistor Using Fib Etching And Deposition Technology, Manoranjan Acharya Jan 2009

Development Of Room Temperature Operating Single Electron Transistor Using Fib Etching And Deposition Technology, Manoranjan Acharya

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The single-electron transistor (SET) is one of the best candidates for future nano electronic circuits because of its ultralow power consumption, small size and unique functionality. SET devices operate on the principle of Coulomb blockade, which is more prominent at dimensions of a few nano meters. Typically, the SET device consists of two capacitively coupled ultra-small tunnel junctions with a nano island between them. In order to observe the Coulomb blockade effects in a SET device the charging energy of the device has to be greater that the thermal energy. This condition limits the operation of most of the existing …

Hall-Effect Thruster-Cathode Coupling : The Effect Of Cathode Position And Magnetic Field Topology, Jason D. Sommerville Jan 2009

Hall-Effect Thruster-Cathode Coupling : The Effect Of Cathode Position And Magnetic Field Topology, Jason D. Sommerville

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Hall-effect thruster (HET) cathodes are responsible for the generation of the free electrons necessary to initiate and sustain the main plasma discharge and to neutralize the ion beam. The position of the cathode relative to the thruster strongly affects the efficiency of thrust generation. However, the mechanisms by which the position affects the efficiency are not well understood. This dissertation explores the effect of cathode position on HET efficiency. Magnetic field topology is shown to play an important role in the coupling between the cathode plasma and the main discharge plasma. The position of the cathode within the magnetic field …

Insight Into The Physics Of Rupture: Dynamic Triggering Seismicity, Hector Gonzalez-Huizar Jan 2009

Insight Into The Physics Of Rupture: Dynamic Triggering Seismicity, Hector Gonzalez-Huizar

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Seismic waves can trigger earthquakes and tremor at large distances from the causable event. Dynamic triggering occurs when the surface waves from large earthquakes change the stresses conditions on previously overstressed faults, promoting failure. To understand the causative stresses and environments behind dynamic triggering, we model the change in the stress field that the passing of Rayleigh and Love waves cause on a fault plane of arbitrary orientation relative to the direction of propagation of the waves, and apply a Coulomb failure criterion to calculate the potential of these stress changes to trigger seismicity. We apply our model to three …

Utilizing Mixed Surfactants For Simultaneous Pore Templating And Active Site Formation In Metal Oxides, Mohammed Shahidur Rahman Jan 2009

Utilizing Mixed Surfactants For Simultaneous Pore Templating And Active Site Formation In Metal Oxides, Mohammed Shahidur Rahman

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Self-assembled nonionic alkyl glycoside surfactants are of interest for creating functional adsorption and catalytic sites at the surface of mesoporous metal oxides, but they typically impart poor long-range order when used as pore templates. Improved order and control over the functional site density may be achieved by mixing them with a cationic surfactant. To confirm this hypothesis, we investigate the lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) phase behavior of aqueous solutions of the functional nonionic surfactant n-dodecyl β-D-maltoside (C12G2) and cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB). A ternary phase diagram of the C16TAB-C12G2 …

Investigation Of Surface Fine Grained Laminae, Streambed, And Streambank Processes Using A Watershed Scale Hydrologic And Sediment Transport Model, Joseph Paul Russo Jan 2009

Investigation Of Surface Fine Grained Laminae, Streambed, And Streambank Processes Using A Watershed Scale Hydrologic And Sediment Transport Model, Joseph Paul Russo

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Sediment transport at the watershed scale in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky is dominated by surface fine grained laminae, streambed, and streambank erosion; high instream sediment storage; and surface erosion processes. All these processes can be impacted by agricultural, urban, and suburban land-uses as well as hydrologic forcing. Understanding sediment transport processes at the watershed scale is a need for budgeting and controlling sediment pollution, and watershed modeling enables investigation of the cumulative effect of sediment processes and the parameters controlling these processes upon the entire sediment budget for a watershed. Sediment transport is being modeled by coupling the hydrologic …

Visualization And Characterization Of Ultrasonic Cavitating Atomizer And Other Automotive Paint Sprayers Using Infrared Thermography, Nelson Kudzo Akafuah Jan 2009

Visualization And Characterization Of Ultrasonic Cavitating Atomizer And Other Automotive Paint Sprayers Using Infrared Thermography, Nelson Kudzo Akafuah

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The disintegration of a liquid jet emerging from a nozzle has been under investigation for several decades. A direct consequence of the liquid jet disintegration process is droplet formation. The breakup of a liquid jet into discrete droplets can be brought about by the use of a diverse forcing mechanism. Cavitation has been thought to assist the atomization process. Previous experimental studies, however, have dealt with cavitation as a secondary phenomenon assisting the primary atomization mechanism. In this dissertation, the role of the energy created by the collapse of cavitation bubbles, together with the liquid pressure perturbation is explicitly configured …
