Retrieval Of Subpixel Snow Covered Area, Grain Size, And Albedo From Modis, Thomas H. Painter, Karl Rittger, Ceretha Mckenzie, Peter Slaughter, Robert E. Davis, Jeff Dozier

United States Army: Publications

We describe and validate a model that retrieves fractional snow-covered area and the grain size and albedo of that snow from surface reflectance data (product MOD09GA) acquired by NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The model analyzes the MODIS visible, near infrared, and shortwave infrared bands with multiple endmember spectral mixtures from a library of snow, vegetation, rock, and soil. We derive snow spectral endmembers of varying grain size from a radiative transfer model specific to a scene's illumination geometry; spectra for vegetation, rock, and soil were collected in the field and laboratory. We validate the model with fractional snow …

Monoclinic Optical Constants, Birefringence, And Dichroism Of Slanted Titanium Nanocolumns Determined By Generalized Ellipsometry, Daniel Schmidt, Benjamin Booso, Tino Hofmann, Eva Schubert, Andrew Sarangan, Mathias Schubert

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry determines the principal monoclinic optical constants of thin films consisting of slanted titanium nanocolumns deposited by glancing angle deposition under 85° incidence and tilted from the surface normal by 47°. Form birefringence measured for wavelengths from 500 to 1000 nm renders the Ti nanocolumns monoclinic absorbing crystals with c-axis along the nanocolumns, b-axis parallel to the film interface, and 67.5° monoclinic angle between the a- and c-axes. The columnar thin film reveals anomalous optical dispersion, extreme birefringence, strong dichroism, and differs completely from bulk titanium. Characteristic bulk interband transitions are absent in the spectral range investigated.

The Magnetoelectric Effects In Multiferroic Composite Nanofibers, C. L. Zhang, W. Q. Chen, S. H. Xie, J. S. Yang, Jiangyu Li

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

In this letter, we analyze the quasistatic and dynamic magnetoelectric responses of multiferroic composite nanofibers consisting of both ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phases and demonstrate that the nanofibers exhibit magnetoelectric responses orders of magnitude higher than multiferroic composite thin films of similar compositions. The analysis suggests that the multiferroic nanofibers are promising for magnetoelectric applications.

Tem Study Of Lizardite-1t Particles In Toluene Solvent, J. Yan, Xingzhong Li, J. Y. Jiang, L. Tan

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

To investigate the self-assembled growth of organosilane molecules carrying Si, C and H to form multiple layers, samples were prepared in toluene and then transferred to TEM Cu grids coated with thin C films for TEM observation. It is surprising that micrometer sized flakes with a main composition of Mg and Si (or Al and Si) were occasionally observed in the TEM specimens, later were identified as lizardite-1T phase. To trace down the source of the inorganic particles, all procedures in the sample preparation were carefully checked. The particles of the lizardite-1T phase were confirmed from the organic solvent of …

Optimal Electrode Shape And Size For Shear Mode Thin Film Acoustic Wave Resonators, L. M. Xu, B. B. Tang, Y. T. Hu, H. Fan, J. S. Yang

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

We study electrode shape and size for plates of hexagonal crystals or polarized ceramics with the sixfold axis or the poling direction parallel to the plate surfaces so that they can be excited into thickness-shear vibration by an electric field in the plate thickness direction. Electrode size and shape optimal in the sense that they satisfy the criterion of Bechmann’s number in every direction are determined.

Connected Vibrating Piezoelectric Bimorph Beams As A Wide-Band Piezoelectric Power Harvester, Zengtao Yang, Jiashi Yang Jan 2009

Connected Vibrating Piezoelectric Bimorph Beams As A Wide-Band Piezoelectric Power Harvester, Zengtao Yang, Jiashi Yang

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

We analyze coupled flexural vibration of two elastically and electrically connected piezoelectric beams near resonance for converting mechanical vibration energy to electrical energy. Each beam is a so-called piezoelectric bimorph with two layers of piezoelectrics. The 1D equations for bending of piezoelectric beams are used for a theoretical analysis. An exact analytical solution to the beam equations is obtained. Numerical results based on the solution show that the two resonances of individual beams can be tuned as close as desired by design when they are connected to yield a wide-band electrical output. Therefore, the structure can be used as a …

Open Workflows: Context-Dependent Construction And Execution In Mobile Wireless Settings, Louis Thomas, Justin Wilson, Grui-Catalin Roman, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Existing workflow middleware executes tasks orchestrated by rules defined in a carefully handcrafted static graph. Workflow management systems have proved effective for service-oriented business automation in stable, wired infrastructures. We introduce a radically new paradigm for workflow construction and execution called open workflow to support goal-directed coordination among physically mobile people and devices that form a transient community over an ad hoc wireless network. The quintessential feature of the open workflow paradigm is dynamic construction and execution of custom, context-specific workflows in response to unpredictable and evolving circumstances by exploiting the knowledge and services available within a given spatiotemporal context. …

Complex Electronic States In Double-Layered Ruthenates (Sr1−Xcax)3ru2o7, Zhe Qu, Jin Peng, David Fobes, Leonard Spinu, Zhiqiang Mao Jan 2009

Complex Electronic States In Double-Layered Ruthenates (Sr1−Xcax)3ru2o7, Zhe Qu, Jin Peng, David Fobes, Leonard Spinu, Zhiqiang Mao

Physics Faculty Publications

The magnetic ground state of (Sr1−xCax)3Ru2O7 (0≤x≤1) is complex, ranging from an itinerant metamagnetic state (0≤x<0.08) to an unusual heavy-mass nearly ferromagnetic (FM) state (0.08<x<0.4), and finally to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state (0.4≤x≤1). In this report we elucidate the electronic properties for these magnetic states, and show that the electronic and magnetic properties are strongly coupled in this system. The electronic ground state evolves from an AFM quasi-two-dimensional metal for x=1.0 to an Anderson localized state for 0.4≤x<1.0 (the AFM region). When the magnetic state undergoes a transition from the AFM to the nearly FM state, the electronic ground state switches to a weakly localized state induced by magnetic scattering for 0.25≤x<0.4, and then to a magnetic metallic state with the in-plane resistivity ρab∝Tα (α>2) for 0.08<x<0.25. The system eventually transforms into a Fermi-liquid ground state when the magnetic ground state enters the itinerant metamagnetic state for x<0.08. When x approaches the critical composition (x∼0.08), …

Regulation Of Intracellular Calcium Concentration By Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields, Shaka S. Scarlett, Jody A. White, Peter F. Blackmore, Karl H. Schoenbach, Juergen Kolb

Bioelectrics Publications

Changes in [Ca2+]i response of individual Jurkat cells to nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) of 60 ns and field strengths of 25, 50, and 100 kV/cm were investigated. The magnitude of the nsPEF-induced rise in [Ca2+]i was dependent on the electric field strength. With 25 and 50 kV/cm, the [Ca2+]i response was due to the release of Ca2+ from intracellular stores and occurred in less than 18 ms. With 100 kV/cm, the increase in [Ca2+]i was due to both internal release and to influx across the plasma …

A Framework For Managing Engineering Change Propagation, Krishna Reddi, Young Moon Jan 2009

A Framework For Managing Engineering Change Propagation, Krishna Reddi, Young Moon

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship

Engineering Changes (ECs) are facts of life for any company developing and introducing new products, despite a commonly held notion that they are distractions from normal operation. Companies can become more innovative by utilising ideas from the ECs or by learning how to handle the ECs. This paper presents a framework to manage the ECs effectively, particularly the issue of EC propagation. An EC seldom confines itself to a single change, but triggers other changes in different components. The framework is designed to identify the affected components automatically, capture the required knowledge during the design phase of the product life …

Escudo: A Fine-Grained Protection Model For Web Browsers, Karthick Jayaraman, Wenliang Du, Balamurugan Rajagopalan, Steve J. Chapin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Web applications are no longer simple hyperlinked documents. They have progressively evolved to become highly complex---web pages combine content from several sources (with varying levels of trustworthiness), and incorporate significant portions of client-side code. However, the prevailing web protection model, the same-origin policy, has not adequately evolved to manage the security consequences of this additional complexity. As a result, web applications have become attractive targets of exploitation. We argue that this disconnection between the protection needs of modern web applications and the protection models used by web browsers that manage those applications amounts to a failure of access control. In …

A Cryptanalysis Methodology For The Reverse Engineering Of Encrypted Information In Images, Allan Anthony Rwabutaza

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Security is an important issue related to the storage and communication of data and information. In data and information security, cryptography and steganography are two of the most common security techniques. On one hand, there is cryptography, which is the secret communication between two parties by message scrambling on the sender's side and message unscrambling on the receiver's side so that only the intended receiver gets the secret message. On the other hand, there is steganography, which is the hiding of information in a medium in such a way that no one other than the sender or the intended receiver …

Directional Analysis And Filtering For Dust Storm Detection In Noaa-Avhrr Imagery, Swapna Janugani

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this research, we propose spatio-spectral processing techniques for the detection of dust storms in 5-band NOAA-AVHRR imagery. The research is mainly focused on locating the dust sources and automatically finding the transport direction of the dust storm. Previous methods that use simple band math analysis have produced promising results but have some drawback in producing consistent results when low SNR images are used. Moreover, in seeking to automate the dust storm detection, the presence of clouds in the vicinity of the dust storm creates a challenge in being able to distinguish these two types of image texture. Our research …

Assessment Of Super-Resolution For Face Recognition From Very-Low Resoution Images, James Roger Roeder

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Super-Resolution (SR) involves the registration of multiple images/frames and reconstruction of a single higher resolution image. The goal of this research is to use multiple, very-low resolution images, such as those produced from a video sequence in a wireless sensor network system, as input to the super-resolution process in a face recognition system. The algorithm used for face recognition is the Fisherfaces method with a nearest neighbor classifier used for the recognition decision. Super-resolution consists of two stages, a registration stage and a reconstruction stage.

The testing images were segmented using a simple skin color detection approach. After the cropping, …
