Prostate Cancer Biomarker Identification: A Comparative Study, Wenjuan Jiang

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

With the current development of proteomics techniques, the discovery of potential molecular biomarkers for early detection of prostate cancer has been greatly improved. In this thesis, we implemented five classifiers including the support vector machine (SVM), Bayesian Classifier, Decision Tree, Random Forest and the Multilayer perceptron (MLP) to test their effectiveness in prostate cancer biomarker identification using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) tissue imaging data. The classifiers were utilized to discriminate cancer mass spectra from normal ones for the data collected at the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). There are 94 7 spectra from normal tissues and 27 from …

Optimal "Image-Based" Weighting For Energy-Resolved Ct, Taly Gilat Schmidt Jul 2009

Optimal "Image-Based" Weighting For Energy-Resolved Ct, Taly Gilat Schmidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper investigates a method of reconstructing images from energy-resolved CT data with negligible beam-hardening artifacts and improved contrast-to-nosie [sic] ratio (CNR) compared to conventional energy-weighting methods. Conceptually, the investigated method first reconstructs separate images from each energy bin. The final image is a linear combination of the energy-bin images, with the weights chosen to maximize the CNR in the final image. The optimal weight of a particular energy-bin image is derived to be proportional to the contrast-to-noise-variance ratio in that image. The investigated weighting method is referred to as “image-based” weighting, although, as will be described, the weights can …

Elastic, Viscous, And Mass Load Effects On Poststroke Muscle Recruitment And Co-Contraction During Reaching: A Pilot Study, Tina M. Stoeckmann, Katherine J. Sullivan, Robert A. Scheidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background: Resistive exercise after stroke can improve strength (force-generating capacity) without increasing spasticity (velocity-dependent hypertonicity). However, the effect of resistive load type on muscle activation and co-contraction after stroke is not clear.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of load type (elastic, viscous, or mass) on muscle activation and co-contraction during resisted forward reaching in the paretic and nonparetic arms after stroke.

Design: This investigation was a single-session, mixed repeated-measures pilot study.

Methods: Twenty participants (10 with hemiplegia and 10 without neurologic involvement) reached forward with each arm against equivalent elastic, viscous, and mass loads. …

Land Conservation And Land Use In New England: Trends, Challenges & Opportunities, Amanda Loomis, Tom Devine, Andrea Small, Brittany Howard, Brett Richardson, Stephanie Dulac Jun 2009

Land Conservation And Land Use In New England: Trends, Challenges & Opportunities, Amanda Loomis, Tom Devine, Andrea Small, Brittany Howard, Brett Richardson, Stephanie Dulac

Land Conservation

Sprawling development patterns accelerated across the New England landscape in the last three decades and consumed the region‘s forests, farms, and open spaces at an unprecedented rate. New England‘ers in all six states formed land trusts, supported statewide conservation organizations, and collaborated with state and federal partners to protect some of their most-prized recreation lands, wildlife habitats, and working lands. The current economic recession has slowed development pressures across the region and offers an opportunity to build on recent successes. The time is right to plan a coordinated New England conservation strategy that protects and links the region‘s natural assets. …

Modelling Of Coal Slag Flow And Layer Thickness In A High Temperature Entrained Flow Gasifier, H. Katalambula Jun 2009

Modelling Of Coal Slag Flow And Layer Thickness In A High Temperature Entrained Flow Gasifier, H. Katalambula

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

A 2-D model for the slag flow simulation in an entrained flow gasifier has been developed. In addition to mass, momentum and energy conservation equations, volume of fluid (VOF) equation was solved to track the liquid-gas interface. Liquid phase consists of melted coal ash particles which deposits on the wall and move downward. The gasification reaction is not considered here but it is postulated to have a mass flow through the interface towards the mass of the liquid phase. The reactor walls are usually kept cold so a temperature gradient and then a solid layer form within the slag layer. …

The “Tea Cup Effect” And Removal Of Suspended Solids From Water, D.A. Mashauri Jun 2009

The “Tea Cup Effect” And Removal Of Suspended Solids From Water, D.A. Mashauri

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Suspended solids problem in water is an issue as old as water treatment itself. Suspended solids can be causative to eroding through abrasion of impellers, pump casings, pipes and other water works related appurtenances. It is therefore appropriate that suspended solids must be removed as early as possible in the water works treatment facilities. It is usually done at the river/lake intakes to reduce the coarse particulate matter that would otherwise adversely affect the water works thereafter. The fine particles that will escape the entrapment at the intake works would therefore require further and more effective system that would remove …

Development Of A Reusable Aerospike Nozzle For Hybrid Rocket Motors, Patrick Lemieux Jun 2009

Development Of A Reusable Aerospike Nozzle For Hybrid Rocket Motors, Patrick Lemieux

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, has developed an innovative program of experimental research and development on hybrid rocket motors (where the fuel and the oxidizer are in different phases prior to combustion). One project currently underway involves the development of aerospike nozzles for such motors. These nozzles, however, are even more susceptible to throat ablation than regular converging-diverging nozzles, due the nature of their flow expansion mechanism. This paper presents the result of a recent development project focused on reducing throat ablation in hybrid rocket motor nozzles. Although the method is …

Energy Losses In Cross Junctions, Zachary B. Sharp, Michael C. Johnson, Steven L. Barfuss, William J. Rahmeyer Jun 2009

Energy Losses In Cross Junctions, Zachary B. Sharp, Michael C. Johnson, Steven L. Barfuss, William J. Rahmeyer

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Energy losses occurring in pipe junctions have been studied for many years. Head loss coefficients (KK) are commonly used to characterize losses across elbows, tees, crosses, valves, and other pipe fittings. When accurate values of KK are used, the flow rate and corresponding total head at any location in a pipe network can be calculated. While KK is well defined for most pipe junctions and fittings, the literature has limited documentations of KK for crosses. This study was commissioned to determine KK for a wide range of flow combinations in a pipe cross with equal diameter pipes and varied flow …

Comparison Of Passive Cervical Spine Flexion In Children And Adults, Jami Saffioti Jun 2009

Comparison Of Passive Cervical Spine Flexion In Children And Adults, Jami Saffioti

Theses and Dissertations

Head trauma is the most frequent injury sustained by children in car crashes, and the neck plays a key role in governing head kinematics during the crash. Pediatric anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs) are used to assess the risk of head injury, yet the pediatric ATD neck is a size-scaled model of the adult ATD neck, with no consideration for the tissue properties and morphological changes during human development. To help understand the effects of maturation on the changes in neck flexion biomechanics, this study compared the passive cervical spine flexion of children to adults in specific age groups (6-8, 9-12, …

Aerospace Engineering

Recent advances towards an efficient computational method for accurately determining the stability and control characteristics of an aircraft are discussed and critiqued. The present approach with greatest promise is to reduce the number of high-fidelity CFD simulations by using Volterra functions Reduced Order Modeling. This type of reduced order model is a predictive model which has a unique training maneuver -a unit impulse. The advantage of such an approach is the fast prediction of the aerodynamic characteristics of an aircraft. This article presents the results of application of the Volterra functions ROM for prediction of linear movement of a 2D …

Applications Of Variation Analysis Methods To Automotive Mechanisms, Robert C. Leishman Jun 2009

Applications Of Variation Analysis Methods To Automotive Mechanisms, Robert C. Leishman

Theses and Dissertations

Variation analysis, or tolerance analysis as it is sometimes called, is typically used to predict variation in critical dimensions in assemblies by calculating the stack-up of the contributing component variations. It is routinely used in manufacturing and assembly environments with great success. Design engineers are able to account for the small changes in dimensions that naturally occur in manufacturing processes, in equipment, and due to operators and still ensure that the assemblies will meet the design specifications and required assembly performance parameters. Furthermore, geometric variation not only affects critical fits and clearances in static assemblies, it can also cause variation …

Multiscale Modeling Of Glass Fiber Reinforced Viscoelastic Polymers Subjected To Impact Loads, Victor Ferreira Teixeira Jun 2009

Nonlinear-Optical Studies Of A Fluorinated Poled Polyimide Guest-Host System, S. F. Hubbard, K. D. Singer, F. Li, Stephen Z. D. Cheng, F. W. Harris

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

We report on poling of a low dielectric constant preimidized fluorinated fully aromatic guest-host polyimide nonlinear optical material including thermal stability of optical nonlinearities and waveguiding properties. We measured a second-harmonic coefficient (d33 = 4.9 +/- 0.5 pm/V at 1217 nm fundamental wavelength) which is accurately predicted by a thermodynamic model of poled polymers. The optical nonlinearity of a poled sample was thermally stable at 80-degrees-C for over 300 h. Films were observed to have negative birefringence. Optical losses for slab waveguides in lowest order TE and TM modes were greater-than-or-equal-to 7.7 dB/cm for doped waveguides at 800 nm wavelength …

Radial Ebg Cell Layout For Gps Patch Antennas, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Xiulong Bao Jun 2009

Radial Ebg Cell Layout For Gps Patch Antennas, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Xiulong Bao

Articles

A novel radial layout for mushroom-like electromagnetic-bandgap (EBG) cells surrounding a printed circularly-polarised patch antenna is proposed. Two radial EBG configurations surrounding a circular patch are compared to a reference patch on a conventional ground plane of the same dimension. The radial shape and displacement of the EBG cells around the patch offers improvements in terms of gain and axial-ratio compared to the reference antenna and is more suitable for circular geometries compared to conventional Cartesian layouts. In particular, the distance between the patch and the surrounding EBG cells is independent of the cell period, which can be arbitrarily chosen, …

Mode Pattern Analysis Of Gallium Nitride-Based Laser Diodes, Xiaomin Jin, Sean Jobe, Simeon Trieu, Benafsh Husain, Jason Flickinger, Bei Zhang, Tao Dai, Xiang-Ning Kang, Guo-Yi Zhang

Electrical Engineering

In this paper, we present an analysis of gallium nitride (GaN) quantum-well (QW) laser diode (LD) by numerical simulation. Here we discuss three aspects that are crucial to our analysis. First, the transverse mode pattern is studied, and our current GaN diode laser structure is discussed with optical waveguide mode analysis. Then we compare the QW design of the laser and maximize laser modal gain. Finally, we report the influence of the electron block (e-block) layer on lasing performance of our design.

Conference papers

Faculty and programs in engineering/industrial technology often promote international exchange and study abroad as a desirable component of a university experience— particularly in this increasingly globalized world. But, what do students who have actually had such experiences perceive? How do they view such experiences, before, during and after the event? The following paper evolved from the experiences of four universities collaborating on an EU-FIPSE funded Atlantis project called DETECT that consist of the partnerships of four Engineering/Technology Educational institutions; Hochschule Darmstadt in Germany, Technological University Dublin in Ireland, and Pennsylvania State University & Purdue University from the USA.

Studies Of Tumbling Motion Generated During Intake In A Bowl-In-Piston Engine, Wen-Cheng Huang Jun 2009

Studies Of Tumbling Motion Generated During Intake In A Bowl-In-Piston Engine, Wen-Cheng Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Approaching flood can be likened to a oncoming missile, and flood routing is viewed as to build an anti-missile system. The applications of the Kalman filter to hydrologic models are not suitable. The Kalman filter fails to yield totally effective predictions in the hydrologic routing by the fact that any specific objective (peakflow) cannot be designated in advance. Without predetermined objectives, the predicted flows cannot catch the real values but follow the traces of the real hydrograph.

Analysis Of Maximum Wind Force For Offshore Structure Design, Jing-Jong Jang, Guo Jyh-Shinn Jun 2009

Analysis Of Maximum Wind Force For Offshore Structure Design, Jing-Jong Jang, Guo Jyh-Shinn

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents the results of a study in which a method is developed for estimating maximum turbulent wind drag force acting on a floating offshore structure with low natural frequency. In evaluating the drag force, forces associated with turbulent wind speeds are considered using both the linear and nonlinear reliability analysis approaches. A mathematical wind spectral density formulation is employed. The probability density function applied for the maximum turbulent wind-induced drag force analysis is considered as a random process. The maximum wind force is analytically developed by using an approximate single term expression for the functional relationship between the …
