Bit Error Rate, Power And Area Analysis Of Multiple Fpga Implementations Of Underwater Fsk, Ying Li, Bridget Benson, Ryan Kastner, Xing Zhang
Electrical Engineering
There has been an increasing interest in creating short-range, low data-rate underwater wireless sensor networks for scientific marine exploration and monitoring. However, the lack of an inexpensive, low-power, underwater acoustic modem is preventing the proliferation of these sensor networks. Thus, we are building an underwater acoustic modem that considers cost and power at every level, from the analog electronics, to the modulation scheme, to the hardware platform. In this paper, we use reconfigurable devices to explore the design space of our modulation scheme – Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) – to select an implementation that provides the lowest power and area …

Safety Evaluation Of Multilane Arterials In Florida, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Prem Chand Devarasetty, Anurag Pande
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Resurfacing is one of the more common construction activities on highways. While its effect on riding quality on any type of roadway is obviously positive; its impact on safety as measured in terms of crashes is far from obvious. This study examines the safety effects of the resurfacing projects on multilane arterials with partially limited access. Empirical Bayes method, which is one of the most accepted approaches for conducting before–after evaluations, has been used to assess the safety effects of the resurfacing projects. Safety effects are estimated not only in terms of all crashes but also rear-end as well as …

Effect Of Discarded Ppvc Contents On Thermal And Ultraviolet Resistance Of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber, S Patcharaphun, S Chuypun
Effect Of Discarded Ppvc Contents On Thermal And Ultraviolet Resistance Of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber, S Patcharaphun, S Chuypun
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
In this investigation, the discarded plasticized-polyvinyl chloride (pPVC) from the extrusion of weather-seal was added into acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR). Subsequently, the effects of pPVC contents on the mechanical properties, thermal, ultraviolet and swelling resistances of NBR were studied. The results indicated that scorch and cure time, tensile strength, hardness and swelling resistance increased with the increasing amount of pPVC added. Considering the thermal and ultraviolet resistances, it was observed that the mechanical properties of unfilled NBR decreased due to the desulphurization of the sulphur crosslinks and chain scission during heat and ultraviolet aging. However, the mechanical properties of the …

Doctoral Dissertations
The Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly technique was used to obtain a new type of protein/polyphenol microcapsule based on naturally occurring polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and gelatin, type A. The dependence of permeability on the molecular weight of permeating substances was studied and compared with commonly used polyallylamine/polystyrene sulfonate capsules. A quartz crystal microbalance was used to monitor the regularities of EGCG adsorption in alternation with type A and B Gelatins and electrophoretic mobility measurements were used that indicated that the nature of assembly was dependent on Gelatin properties. It was shown that EGCG retains its antioxidant activity in the LbL assemblies. …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The objective of this study was to establish 2009 safety belt and child safety seat usage rates in Kentucky. The 2009 survey continues to document the results after enactment of the original “secondary enforcement” statewide mandatory safety belt law in 1994 and the subsequent change to “primary enforcement” which was enacted in 2006. Data were collected at 160 randomly selected sites in 18 counties across Kentucky. Data from the individual sites were combined into a statewide percentage considering roadway functional classification, county, and vehicle miles traveled.
The data show that the usage rate in 2009 (79.7 percent) increased several percentage …
Rna Search With Decision Trees And Partial Covariance Models, Jennifer A. Smith
Rna Search With Decision Trees And Partial Covariance Models, Jennifer A. Smith
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The use of partial covariance models to search for RNA family members in genomic sequence databases is explored. The partial models are formed from contiguous subranges of the overall RNA family multiple alignment columns. A binary decision-tree framework is presented for choosing the order to apply the partial models and the score thresholds on which to make the decisions. The decision trees are chosen to minimize computation time subject to the constraint that all of the training sequences are passed to the full covariance model for final evaluation. Computational intelligence methods are suggested to select the decision tree since the …
Style-Based Ballot Mark Recognition, Pingping Xiu, Daniel Lopresti, Henry Baird, George Nagy, Elisa Barney Smith
Style-Based Ballot Mark Recognition, Pingping Xiu, Daniel Lopresti, Henry Baird, George Nagy, Elisa Barney Smith
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The push toward voting via hand-marked paper ballots has focused attention on the limitations of current optical scan systems. Discrepancies between human and machine interpretations of ballot markings can lead to a loss of trust in the election process. In this paper, a style-based approach to ballot recognition is proposed in which marks are recognized collectively rather than in isolation. The consistency of a voter’s style is leveraged to improve the overall accuracy of the system. We compare style-based recognition to various kinds of singlet classifiers and show that it outperforms them by a substantial margin
Assessing Plastically Dissipated Energy As A Condition For Fatigue Crack Growth, D. Cojocaru, Anette M. Karlsson
Assessing Plastically Dissipated Energy As A Condition For Fatigue Crack Growth, D. Cojocaru, Anette M. Karlsson
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
The suitability of using a proposed condition for simulating cyclic crack propagation in a numerical scheme is qualitatively investigated, employing the finite element method. The propagation criterion is based on a condition that relates the plastically dissipated energy to a critical value. In the finite element simulation scheme, the crack is allowed to propagate when the criterion is satisfied, and the crack propagates until the condition is no longer fulfilled. Experimentally, it is well established that a negative load ratio increases the crack propagation rate, whereas a tensile overload tends to decrease the crack propagation rate. By simulating these load …

Tunable Magnetic Response Of Metamaterials, Shumin Xiao, Uday K. Chettiar, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. Drachev, I C. Khoo, V. M. Shalaev
Birck and NCN Publications
We demonstrate a thermally tunable optical metamaterial with negative permeability working in the visible range. By covering coupled metallic nanostrips with aligned nematic liquid crystals (NLCs), the magnetic response wavelength of the metamaterial is effectively tuned through control of the ambient temperature, changing the refractive index of LC via phase transitions. By increasing the ambient temperature from 20 to 50 degrees C, the magnetic response wavelength shifts from 650 to 632 nm. Numerical simulations confirm our tests and match the experimental observations well.

Translation Of Nanoantenna Hot Spots By A Metal-Dielectric Composite Superlens, Zhengtong Liu, Mark D. Thoreson, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. M. Shalaev
Birck and NCN Publications
We employ numerical simulations to show that highly localized, enhanced electromagnetic fields, also known as "hot spots," produced by a periodic array of silver nanoantennas can be spatially translated to the other side of a metal-dielectric composite superlens. The proposed translation of the hot spots enables surface-enhanced optical spectroscopy without the undesirable contact of molecules with metal, and thus it broadens and reinforces the potential applications of sensing based on field-enhanced fluorescence and surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Vertical Carbon Nanotube Devices With Nanoscale Lengths Controlled Without Lithography, Aaron D. Franklin, Robert A. Sayer, Timothy D. Sands, David B. Janes, Timothy S. Fisher
PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems
Vertical single-walled carbon nanotubes (vSWCNTs) are synthesized within highly ordered porous anodic alumina (PAA) templates supported on Si substrates. A process for obtaining thin-film PAA with long-range ordered nanopores is presented in this paper. Each nanopore contains at most one v-SWCNT that is supported by a dielectric and addressed by electrochemically formed Pd nanowire source contacts and evaporated Pd drain contacts. Characteristics of these completely vertical, two-terminal nanotube devices are presented. Control of the v-SWCNT length is demonstrated using a straightforward etching process with lengths of less than 100 nm achieved without the need for complex/expensive lithography. This effective nanoscale …

Simplified Model For Periodic Nanoantennae: Linear Model And Inverse Design, Joshua Borneman, Kuo-Ping Chen, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. M. Shalaev
Birck and NCN Publications
We determine and use a minimal set of numerical simulations to create a simplified model for the spectral response of nanoantennae with respect to their geometric and modeling parameters. The simplified model is then used to rapidly obtain best-fit modeling parameters to match experimental results, accurately predict the spectral response for various geometries, and inversely design antennae to have a desired performance. This method is structure and model independent, and is applied here to both nanoantenna pair arrays and strips modeled using a 3D finite-element method and 2D spatial harmonic analysis, respectively. Typical numerical simulations may need hours per model, …

Ultrasensitive Protein Detection In Blood Serum Using Gold Nanoparticle Probes By Single Molecule Spectroscopy, Jiji Chen, Chungang Wang, Joseph Irudayaraj
Birck and NCN Publications
A one-step rapid and ultrasensitive immunoassay capable of detecting proteins in blood serum is developed using gold nanoprobes and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). In this approach we take advantage of the inherent photoluminescence property of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) to develop a fluorophore-free assay to observe binding entities by monitoring the diffusion of bound versus unbound molecules in a limited confocal volume. 40-nm GNPs conjugated separately with rabbit anti-IgG (Fc) and goat anti-IgG (Fab) when incubated in blood serum containing IgG forms a sandwich structure constituting dimers and oligomers that can be differentiated by to detect IgG in blood serum at …

Pseudomorphic Stabilization Of Rocksalt Gan In Tin/Gan Multilayers And Superlattices, Vijay Rawat, Dmitri Zakharov, E A. Stach, Timothy D. Sands
Birck and NCN Publications
Gallium nitride (GaN) in its stable wurtzite phase has proven its utility in light-emitting diodes and diode lasers as well as high-temperature and high-power electronic devices. In addition to its equilibrium wurtzite phase, GaN exhibits two cubic polymorphs, a zinc-blende phase and a high-pressure rocksalt phase. Here, we report the pseudomorphic stabilization of the high-pressure rocksalt phase of GaN within TiN/GaN multilayers as verified using x-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. High-resolution lattice imaging confirmed that the lattice parameter of the rocksalt GaN phase is 0.41 nm. The critical thickness of the GaN film that can be pseudomophically stabilized …
Magnetic Stabilization Of Nadir-Pointing Small Satellites, Chau T. Ton
Magnetic Stabilization Of Nadir-Pointing Small Satellites, Chau T. Ton
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Since magnetic control systems are relatively lightweight, require low power and are inexpensive, they are attractive for small, inexpensive satellites in low Earth orbits. In this thesis we present averaging-based feedback control laws that achieve three-axis stabilized nadir-pointing attitude. Two types of nonlinear feedback control laws are proposed: full-state feedback and passivity-based feedback. Full-state feedback uses the attitude and angular velocity measurements to regulate the spacecrafts dynamics. Passivity-based feedback uses the attitude measurement and doesn’t require the rate sensors. The control laws are tested using two magnetic field models: the tilted dipole model and the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) …
An Intelligible Software (Cfa) Approach For Fiber-Reinforced Laminate Failure Analysis Including A Piecewise Representation Of The Tsai-Wu Failure Criterion Using Excel And Matlab, Ryan C. Schmidt
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Present generations rely heavily on the use of petroleum as their primary means of transportation. As the cost of petroleum continues to escalate, the need for lightweight structures for vehicle applications becomes more evident. The ability to engineer materials so that they possess desired application specific properties and characteristics has made tremendous progress in the past century. Consequently, the use of these composite materials for aircraft weight reduction has been investigated for decades.
The aerospace industry often uses composite materials to make a laminated composite structure where each constituent ply of the laminate has its own material properties. This anisotropic …

Reverse Transcription Of 16s Rrna To Monitor Ribosome-Synthesizing Bacterial Populations In The Environment, Ting Lu, Peter George Stroot, Daniel B. Oerther
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Identification and quantification of phylogenetically defined bacterial populations in the environment are often performed using molecular tools targeting 16S rRNA. Fluorescence in situ hybridization has been used to monitor the expression and processing of rRNA by targeting the 3' tail of precursor 16S rRNA. To expand this approach, we employed reverse transcription of total RNA using primer S-D-Bact-0338-a-A-18. Length heterogeneity detected by slab gel analysis, denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) was used to differentiate the 5' tail of the precursor from mature 16S rRNA, and the relative abundance of the precursor compared to the abundance of mature 16S rRNA was …

Small Antenna Options For Ultra-Wideband (Uwb) Applications, David Kearney
Masters
Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems provide a means for short range high data rate wireless transmission between electronic devices. Portable devices and in particular, mobile handsets, have the potential to harness the unprecedented connectivity associated with UWB’s high speed, low power data transfer. Over the course of this work, a number of small antenna options for UWB mobile handset applications are presented. Two key subgroups of the 3.1 –10.6GHz UWB band are chosen and suitable antennas designed for both bands. At the upper end of the band, a ceramic planar inverted-F antenna is proposed to cover band groups 3 & 6 (6.3 …

Use Of Co2 Concentration Difference Or Co2 Balance To Assess Ventilation Rate Of Broiler Houses, Hongwei Xin, Hong Li, Robert T. Burns, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, John W. Earnest
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Ventilation rate (VR) is one of the two key elements for quantifying aerial emissions from animal production facilities. Direct, continuous measurement of building VR can be challenging and impractical under certain circumstances,e.g., naturally ventilated animal housing or a large number of ventilation fans in the building. This study examined the suitability of estimating VR of broiler houses with built‐up litter (mixture of manure and bedding), when supplemental heating was not in use, through either carbon dioxide (CO2) balance or the relationship of VR to CO2 concentration difference between exhaust and inlet air. The reference VR was based …

Near-Field Millimeter-Wave Imaging Of Exposed And Covered Fatigue Cracks, Sergey Kharkovsky, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, R. Zoughi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, the efficacy of near-field millimeter-wave nondestructive techniques, using open-ended flange-mounted rectangular waveguide probes, for extracting information of 3-D crack area deformation (i.e., in-plane and out-of-plane deformation) is demonstrated. It is shown that this information can be obtained from indications of unique interference patterns that are generated between the probe and the metal surface during the raster scan of a surface-breaking exposed and covered fatigue crack using a phase-sensitive reflectometer.
