Theoretical Evaluation Of The Nightcool Nocturnal Radiation Cooling Concept, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

An evaluation has been conducted of the potential of a night sky cooling system to substantially reduce space cooling needs in homes in North American climates. The report describes the innovative residential cooling system which uses nocturnal night sky radiation from a roof integrated radiator. The system uses a sealed attic covered by a highly conductive metal roof which is selectively linked by air flow to the main zone with the attic zone to provide cooling- largely during nighttime hours. Available house mass is used to store sensible cooling. Additional dehumidification is done during the evening hours as warranted by …

Use Of Maxitive (Possibility) Measures In Foundations Of Physics And Description Of Randomness: Case Study, A. M. Finkelstein, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks, Hung T. Nguyen Apr 2005

Use Of Maxitive (Possibility) Measures In Foundations Of Physics And Description Of Randomness: Case Study, A. M. Finkelstein, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

According to the traditional probability theory, events with a positive but very small probability can occur (although very rarely). For example, from the purely mathematical viewpoint, it is possible that the thermal motion of all the molecules in a coffee cup goes in the same direction, so this cup will start lifting up.

In contrast, physicists believe that events with extremely small probability cannot occur. In this paper, we show that to get a consistent formalization of this belief, we need, in addition to the original probability measure, to also consider a maxitive (possibility) measure.

From Fuzzification And Intervalization To Anglification: A New 5d Geometric Formalism For Physics And Data Processing, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2005

From Fuzzification And Intervalization To Anglification: A New 5d Geometric Formalism For Physics And Data Processing, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We show that in understanding foundations of modern physics, with its 10-dimensional (and higher-dimensional) space-time models, it is very helpful to use the main ideas behind fuzzification -- extension of arithmetic operations and elementary functions from exact numbers to fuzzy numbers. The resulting formalism is, from the mathematical viewpoint, somewhat more complex than the traditional fuzzy arithmetic, but it is still much simpler than the quantum field theory -- and thus, it helps to make several important ideas from foundations of modern physics much more intuitively clear.

The Interval Categorizer Tesselation-Based Model For High Perfomance Computing, Marilton S. De Aguiar, Gracaliz P. Dimuro, Antonio C. Da Rocha Costa, Rafael K.S. Silva Apr 2005

The Interval Categorizer Tesselation-Based Model For High Perfomance Computing, Marilton S. De Aguiar, Gracaliz P. Dimuro, Antonio C. Da Rocha Costa, Rafael K.S. Silva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The paper presents the results obtained by an implementation of the interval tessellation-based model for categorization of geographic regions according the analysis of the relief function declivity, called ICTM. The analysis of the relief declivity, which is embedded in the rules of the model ICTM, categorizes each tessellation cell, with respect to the whole considered region, according to the (positive, negative, null) signal of the declivity of the cell. Such information is represented in the states assumed by the cells of the model. The overall configuration of such cells allows the division of the region into sub-regions of cells belonging …

Random Interval Arithmetic Is Closer To Common Sense: An Observation, Rene Alt, Jean-Luc Lamotte, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2005

Random Interval Arithmetic Is Closer To Common Sense: An Observation, Rene Alt, Jean-Luc Lamotte, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

From the commonsense viewpoint, if on a bridge whose weight we know with an accuracy of 1 ton, we place a car whose weight we know with an accuracy of 5 kg, then the accuracy with which we know the overall weight of a bridge with a car on it should still be 1 ton. This is what an engineer or a physicist would say. Alas, this is not so in traditional interval arithmetic. In this paper, we show that, in contrast to traditional interval arithmetic, the random interval arithmetic (proposed by the first two authors) actually has this important …

Fabrication And Composition Control Of Niti Shape Memory Thin Films For Microactuators, Richard N. Savage, David J. Getchel Apr 2005

Fabrication And Composition Control Of Niti Shape Memory Thin Films For Microactuators, Richard N. Savage, David J. Getchel

Materials Engineering

Microactuators fabricated with NiTi thin films take advantage of this material’s large energy density (~5-10 joules/cm3) and high strain recovery (~8%). Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) devices designed with these actuators can serve as biosensors, micro-fluidic pumps or optical switches. However, the fundamental mechanical properties stemming from the crystalline structure of these shape memory NiTi films have not been fully characterized with MEMS scale test structures. Understanding the relationship of crystalline structure, film stoichiometry, and phase transformation temperatures is crucial when designing a MEMS actuator. In addition, force displacement curves for both the martensite and austenite phases of NiTi are necessary to …

Numerical Simulation Of Nanopulse Penetration Of Biological Matter Using The Z -Transform, Shengjun Su

Doctoral Dissertations

Short duration, fast rise time ultra-wide-band (UWB) electromagnetic pulses (“nanopulses”) are generated by numerous electronic devices in use today. Moreover, many novel technologies involving nanopulses are under development and expected to become widely used soon. Study of nanopulse bioeffects is needed to probe their useful range in possible biomedical and biotechnological applications, and to ensure human safety.

Based on the well-known dispersive properties of biological matter and their expression as a summation of terms corresponding to the main polarization mechanisms, the Cole-Cole expression is commonly employed to describe the frequency dependence of the dielectric properties of a tissue. Solving the …

Application Of Self -Assembled Ultrathin Film Coatings To Stabilize Enzyme Encapsulation And Activity In Alginate Microspheres, Rohit Srivastava Apr 2005

Application Of Self -Assembled Ultrathin Film Coatings To Stabilize Enzyme Encapsulation And Activity In Alginate Microspheres, Rohit Srivastava

Doctoral Dissertations

Alginate-based hydrogels have been used for the encapsulation of a variety of materials, including enzymes, proteins, and cells for a wide range of applications from drug delivery to biosensors and bioreactors. However, due to the high porosity of the matrix, it has been increasingly difficult to retain macromolecules inside the alginate matrix, leading to loss in functionality over time. In an effort to improve the stability for long-term biosensor use, this work investigated layer-by-layer self-assembly as a potential technique to provide a diffusion barrier to an encapsulated macromolecule. Alginate microspheres (∼2–50μm radius) were fabricated using an emulsification technique, and were …

Interval Methods: An Introduction, Luke Achenie, Vladik Kreinovich, Kaj Madsen Apr 2005

Interval Methods: An Introduction, Luke Achenie, Vladik Kreinovich, Kaj Madsen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The ongoing development of ever more advanced computers provides the potential for solving increasingly difficult computational problems. However, given the complexity of modern computer architectures, the task of realizing this potential needs careful attention. A main concern of High Performance Computing is the development of software that optimizes the performance of a given computer.

An important characteristic of the computer performance in scientific computing is the accuracy of the computation results. Often, we can estimate this accuracy by using traditional statistical techniques. However, in many practical situations, we do not know the probability distributions of different measurement, estimation, and/or roundoff …

How To Reconstruct The Original Shape Of A Radar Signal?, Matthew G. Averill, Gang Xiang, Vladik Kreinovich, George R. Keller, Scott A. Starks, Patrick S. Debroux, James Boehm

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The shape of the radar signal can provide us with the additional information about the reflecting surface. However, to decrease the noise, radars use filtering, and filtering changes the shapes of the radar signal. It is therefore necessary to reconstruct the original shape of the radar signal.

Towards An Optimal Approach To Soft Constraint Problems, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2005

Towards An Optimal Approach To Soft Constraint Problems, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In traditional constraint satisfaction, constraints are ``hard'' in the sense that we need to satisfy them all. In many practical situations, however, constraints are "soft" in the sense that if we are unable to satisfy some of them, the corresponding solution is still practically useful. In such situations, it is desirable to satisfy as many high-priority constraints as possible. In this paper, we describe an optimal algorithm for solving the corresponding soft constraint problem.

Biosensing With Microcantilever-Based Sensors, Xiaodong Yan Apr 2005

Biosensing With Microcantilever-Based Sensors, Xiaodong Yan

Doctoral Dissertations

Microcantilevers provide an ideal platform for biosensors. The micron-sized transducer brings several advantages, such as high sensitivity, small sample quantity for analysis, portability, implantable sensor devices, and the ability to be mass produced and integrated into standard microelectronic processing technologies like complementary metal oxide seminconductors (CMOS).

The objective of this research is to investigate and develop modification methods of microcanitlevers for biosensing applications.

Two microcantilever modification methods were investigated. They are self-assembly monolayer method and layer-by-layer method. A fundamental procedure for modification of microcantilevers using the layer-by-layer approach was developed for the first time in this research. These modification methods …

Damage Assessment And Strength Predictions In S-Glass/Epoxy Laminates Subjected To Low Energy Impact, Tuan-Khoi Dang Nguyen Apr 2005

Damage Assessment And Strength Predictions In S-Glass/Epoxy Laminates Subjected To Low Energy Impact, Tuan-Khoi Dang Nguyen

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Composite materials have become one of the leading materials for manufacturing in the aerospace industry today. Compared to "conventional" aerospace metals, composites generally have higher strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, good fatigue and corrosion resistance and reduced parts count. However, like any other material, they also have disadvantages. They are inherently brittle and are thus prone to impact damage. Low energy/velocity impact damage, in particular, can be dangerous because the damage oftentimes goes undetected and can subsequently grow under load. Also known as barely visible impact damage (BVID), this area of concentration focuses on the small-scale damage that may be very …

Investigation Of A Highly Loaded, High Pressure Ratio Axial Turbine Stage For Industrial Applications, Amit Garg Apr 2005

Investigation Of A Highly Loaded, High Pressure Ratio Axial Turbine Stage For Industrial Applications, Amit Garg

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The turbine component of a gas turbine engine is the most costly component due to its complexity, and life requirements, given the harsh environment in which it is required to operate. Minimizing the number of stages can lead to significant savings in terms of development efforts, materials, and serviceable parts. This philosophy has led to a significant increase in the work demanded from the typical stage. In this work, a highly loaded axial turbine stage was designed for high power-output industrial applications using a comprehensive set of investigations, which included parametric studies, throughflow solutions, and 2D airfoil shapes. The design …

Fabrication And Compressive Yield Strength Of Open Cell Corrugated Cellular Solids, Jeong Ho Choi

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This thesis studied the fabrication and compressive yield strength of open cell corrugated cellular solids made from type 304 stainless steel. Test samples were made by corrugating woven wire meshes, then laminating these in a high temperature argon environment. Mesh sizes ranging from 9.5 pore/cm (24 pore/in) to 31.5 pore/cm (80 pore/in) with wire diameters ranging from 0.178 mm (0.007 in) to 0.3556 mm (0.014 in) were bonded using lithobraze 925 (Ag-7.5Cu-0.2Li) to create cellular solids having relative densities ranging from 0.0384 to 0.0920. Test samples were then quasistatically compressed to measure the stress-strain response. The stress level at 25% …

Modeling And Slew-Maneuver Control Of A Flexible Spacecraft, Jeremy E. Eckhart Apr 2005

Modeling And Slew-Maneuver Control Of A Flexible Spacecraft, Jeremy E. Eckhart

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Slew-maneuver control problem is studied for a flexible spacecraft consisting of a rigid main body to which a long flexible appendage is attached. Nonlinear dynamical system models are developed using both distributed parameter modeling and discrete parameter modeling; these models are shown to be equivalent for appropriately chosen system parameters. Lyapunov-based nonlinear feedback controllers are designed for the control of rigid-body motion while suppressing the lowest frequency vibrational mode. In case of large-angle maneuvers, these nonlinear controllers are shown to outperform the linearization-based controllers including the filtered proportional-derivative (PD) controllers as well as the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controllers. Finally, …
