Electronics Design Of The Aglite-Lidar Instrument, Scott S. Cornelsen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The AGLITE-LIDAR instrument is a three-wavelength lidar system being designed and constructed at the Space Dynamics Laboratory under contract from the Agricultural Research Service. Its purpose is to implement a novel new approach to making measurements of gas and particulate pollutants released into the atmosphere by agricultural operations. Once operational, it will provide a means whereby the total flux of pollutants being emitted by agricultural facilities might be measured. This approach is valid even for facilities that may cover several acres. The design of the AGLITE instrument consists of a myriad of different components that are brought together in a …

Uncertainty Assessment Of Hydrologic Model States And Parameters: Sequential Data Assimilation Using The Particle Filter, Hamid Moradkhani, Kuo-Lin Hsu, Hoshin V. Gupta, Soroosh Sorooshian May 2005

Uncertainty Assessment Of Hydrologic Model States And Parameters: Sequential Data Assimilation Using The Particle Filter, Hamid Moradkhani, Kuo-Lin Hsu, Hoshin V. Gupta, Soroosh Sorooshian

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Two elementary issues in contemporary Earth system science and engineering are (1) the specification of model parameter values which characterize a system and (2) the estimation of state variables which express the system dynamic. This paper explores a novel sequential hydrologic data assimilation approach for estimating model parameters and state variables using particle filters (PFs). PFs have their origin in Bayesian estimation. Methods for batch calibration, despite major recent advances, appear to lack the flexibility required to treat uncertainties in the current system as new information is received. Methods based on sequential Bayesian estimation seem better able to take advantage …

Lumbar arthrodesis or spinal fusion is usually performed to relieve back pain and regain functionality from ruptured discs, disc degenerative disease, trauma and scoliosis. Metal rods are often fixed to the spine with screws or hooks, while fusion develops on the affected vertebrae. Fusion is determined by visual examination of radiographic images (X-ray), computed tomography (CT) scans or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), yet these inspection procedures are subjective methods of review. They do not objectively confirm the presence of spinal fusion, which can lead to exploratory surgery to determine if fusion has occurred. Therefore, a need has arisen to develop …

Instrumentation Of Ysz Oxygen Sensor Calibration In Liquid Lead-Bismuth Eutectic, X. Wu, Jian Ma, Yingtao Jiang, B. Fu, W. Hang, J. Zhang, N. Li May 2005

Instrumentation Of Ysz Oxygen Sensor Calibration In Liquid Lead-Bismuth Eutectic, X. Wu, Jian Ma, Yingtao Jiang, B. Fu, W. Hang, J. Zhang, N. Li

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE), a good candidate for the coolant in the subcritical transmutation blanket, is known to be very corrosive to the stainless steel that transports it. Such a corrosion problem can be prevented by producing and maintaining a protective oxide layer on the exposed surface of the stainless steel. Proper formation of the oxide layer critically depends on the accurate measurement and control of the oxygen concentration in liquid LBE. An oxygen sensor calibration/measurement apparatus has been designed and built to deliberately calibrate an yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) oxygen sensor. A detailed description of this system with its …

Nonlinear Model For Reinforced Concrete Under Cyclic Loading, Aly Said, M. Elmorsi, M. Nehdi May 2005

Nonlinear Model For Reinforced Concrete Under Cyclic Loading, Aly Said, M. Elmorsi, M. Nehdi

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Most of the available shear models for reinforced concrete rely on empirical formulations. In this study, a rational shear stress function is used to define the shear stress–strain envelope for reinforced concrete. Cyclic rules are proposed to define the loading, unloading and reloading relationships for reinforced concrete under shear stress reversals. A normal stress function describing the cyclic relationship of concrete under axial stress is also introduced. The proposed functions are verified using experimental data of reinforced concrete panels tested under monotonic and cyclic loading. Subsequently, the normal and shear stress functions along with their cyclic rules are integrated in …

Dissolution, Reactor, And Environmental Behavior Of Zro2-Mgo Inert Fuel Matrix: Neutronic Evaluation Of Zro2-Mgo Inert Fuels, E. Fridman, S. Kolesnikov, E. Shwageraus, A. Galperin May 2005

Dissolution, Reactor, And Environmental Behavior Of Zro2-Mgo Inert Fuel Matrix: Neutronic Evaluation Of Zro2-Mgo Inert Fuels, E. Fridman, S. Kolesnikov, E. Shwageraus, A. Galperin

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

This report presents the results of the Task 4, defined in working program as: evaluation of reactivity feedback coefficients. Three main parameters of the Fertile-Free Fuel (FFF) lattices were evaluated: Moderator Temperature Coefficient (MTC), Fuel Temperature Coefficient due to Doppler Effect (DC), and soluble Boron reactivity worth (BW).

One of the major design challenges associated with utilization of FFF is deterioration of the temperature coefficients and control materials reactivity worth caused by high thermal cross-section of Pu and consequent hardening of the neutron spectrum. The purpose of the investigation reported in this section is to estimate the potential of addition …

A Simulation Analysis Of Factors Influencing The Flexibility Of Cellular Manufacturing, Manocher Djassemi May 2005

A Simulation Analysis Of Factors Influencing The Flexibility Of Cellular Manufacturing, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

The performance of cellular manufacturing (CM) systems in a variable demand and flexible workforce environment has been examined using simulation modelling. Discrepancies between academicians and practitioners' findings with respect to flexibility and uneven machine utilization in CM systems are discussed. The views of two parties were incorporated in simulation models to rectify the existing discrepancies. While the results of this study confirm the previous findings of academicians regarding the deterioration of the performance of CM in a variable product mix situation, it appears that those results may be significantly influenced by considering a flexible workforce. The simulation results show that …

Improving The Performance Of Internet Data Transport, Anshul Kantawala, Jonathan S. Turner May 2005

Improving The Performance Of Internet Data Transport, Anshul Kantawala, Jonathan S. Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

With the explosion of the World Wide Web, the Internet infrastructure faces new challenges in providing high performance for data traffic. First, it must be able to pro-vide a fair-share of congested link bandwidth to every flow. Second, since web traffic is inherently interactive, it must minimize the delay for data transfer. Recent studies have shown that queue management algorithms such as Tail Drop, RED and Blue are deficient in providing high throughput, low delay paths for a data flow. Two major shortcomings of the current algorithms are: they allow TCP flows to get synchronized and thus require large buffers …

Extension Of Stereolithography Mold Life Using Gas-Assisted Injection Molding, Dilip Bose Ramalingam Nagarajan May 2005

Extension Of Stereolithography Mold Life Using Gas-Assisted Injection Molding, Dilip Bose Ramalingam Nagarajan

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Stereolithography (SL) molds show great promise for injection molding of limited number of parts, greatly reducing the time to product and production cost. However, they present challenges to designers because of their strength, thermal characteristics and shorter lifetimes compared to metal molds. Gas-assisted injection molding (GAIM) has been used to alleviate the problems of distortion and thermal damage. The use of GAIM makes it possible to produce a large number of parts compared to conventional injection molding in epoxy molds with higher quality. In this research solid models of the mold with different part geometry were created using CAD and …

The Use Of Confidence Intervals For The Control Limits Of X¯ And S Control Charts, Daniel A. Lopez May 2005

The Use Of Confidence Intervals For The Control Limits Of X¯ And S Control Charts, Daniel A. Lopez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This research focuses on the variation observed on the control limits of X¯ and S control charts, due to the sampling schemes. In previous studies it has been shown that the estimated control limits derived by a small number of subgroups does not help in setting up reliable control limits. It has also been shown that estimating control limits from a large number of subgroups is not a feasible option. In this research quantile tables will be derived by sampling from the standard normal distribution and used to explain the effects of sampling on the control limits. The tables will …

Simulations Of Transient Membrane Behavior In Cells Subjected To A High-Intensity Ultrashort Electric Pulse, Q. Hu, S. Viswanadham, R. P. Joshi, Karl H. Schoenbach, Stephen J. Beebe, P. F. Blackmore May 2005

Simulations Of Transient Membrane Behavior In Cells Subjected To A High-Intensity Ultrashort Electric Pulse, Q. Hu, S. Viswanadham, R. P. Joshi, Karl H. Schoenbach, Stephen J. Beebe, P. F. Blackmore

Bioelectrics Publications

A molecular dynamics (MD) scheme is combined with a distributed circuit model for a self-consistent analysis of the transient membrane response for cells subjected to an ultrashort (nanosecond) high-intensity (approximately 0.01-V/nm spatially averaged field) voltage pulse. The dynamical, stochastic, many-body aspects are treated at the molecular level by resorting to a course-grained representation of the membrane lipid molecules. Coupling the Smoluchowski equation to the distributed electrical model for current flow provides the time-dependent transmembrane fields for the MD simulations. A good match between the simulation results and available experimental data is obtained. Predictions include pore formation times of about 5-6 …

Optimal Flux Weakening In Surface Pm Machines Using Fractional-Slot Concentrated Windings, Ayman M. El-Refaie, Thomas M. Jahns May 2005

Optimal Flux Weakening In Surface Pm Machines Using Fractional-Slot Concentrated Windings, Ayman M. El-Refaie, Thomas M. Jahns

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A design approach is presented for achieving optimal flux-weakening operation in surface permanent-magnet (SPM) synchronous machines by properly designing the machine's stator windings using concentrated, fractional-slot stator windings. This technique makes it possible to significantly increase the machine inductance in order to achieve the critical condition for providing wide speed ranges of constant-power operation. The conditions for optimal flux weakening can be achieved while simultaneously delivering sinusoidal line-to-line back-electromotive-force waveforms and low cogging torque. A closed-form analytical model is described that can be used to design SPM machines to achieve optimal flux-weakening conditions. This technique is applied to design a …

Effects Of Load Magnitude On Diagnosing Broken Bar Faults In Induction Motors Using The Pendulous Oscillation Of The Rotor Magnetic Field Orientation, Behrooz Mirafzal, Nabeel Demerdash May 2005

Effects Of Load Magnitude On Diagnosing Broken Bar Faults In Induction Motors Using The Pendulous Oscillation Of The Rotor Magnetic Field Orientation, Behrooz Mirafzal, Nabeel Demerdash

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The effects of load level on the ability to diagnose broken bar faults in squirrel-cage induction motors are studied in this paper. The pendulous oscillation of the rotor magnetic field orientation is implemented as a fault signature for rotor fault diagnostic purposes at steady-state operations. Moreover, the effects of load level on the low-side band component of the stator current spectrum, and associated diagnostic difficulties in this approach particularly in the presence of motor operation from pulsewidth-modulation drives, are reported as well. These investigations were performed through testing 2-hp and 5-hp induction motors over a wide range of load levels …

Synthesizing E-Government Stage Models – A Meta-Synthesis Based On Meta-Ethnography Approach, Keng Siau, Y. Long May 2005

Synthesizing E-Government Stage Models – A Meta-Synthesis Based On Meta-Ethnography Approach, Keng Siau, Y. Long

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The growing interest in e-government raises the question of stages in e-government development. A few stage models for e-government have been proposed. Without a common e-government stage model, different research in e-government may be based on different stage models. This presents a difficulty in comparing and understanding different research results. In this research, we synthesize the existing e-government stage models so that there is a common frame of reference for researchers and practitioners in the area.

Capacity And Complexity Of Hmm Duration Modeling Techniques, Michael T. Johnson May 2005

Capacity And Complexity Of Hmm Duration Modeling Techniques, Michael T. Johnson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The ability of a standard hidden Markov model (HMM) or expanded state HMM (ESHMM) to accurately model duration distributions of phonemes is compared with specific duration-focused approaches such as semi-Markov models or variable transition probabilities. It is demonstrated that either a three-state ESHMM or a standard HMM with an increased number of states is capable of closely matching both Gamma distributions and duration distributions of phonemes from the TIMIT corpus, as measured by Bhattacharyya distance to the true distributions. Standard HMMs are easily implemented with off-the-shelf tools, whereas duration models require substantial algorithmic development and have higher computational costs when …

For the SIP, the calibration presented in this work, calibration error less than 5% error is achieved. The calibration is applied to …

Conceptualization And Development Of A Dam Break Life-Loss Estimation Model, Maged A. Aboelata May 2005

Conceptualization And Development Of A Dam Break Life-Loss Estimation Model, Maged A. Aboelata

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Catastrophic events such as dam failures or severe floods are considered to be of low probability, although their consequences can be extremely high and might include loss of life. Earlier studies have linked circumstances surrounding historical darn failure events to actual loss of life and produced formulations using statistical analysis of these events. Shortcomings of these methods include the inability to adjust life-loss estimates based on the type of dam failure, global averaging of population at risk, and ignoring the dynamics of the evacuation process.

The main objective of this research is to develop a practical and improved life-loss estimation …

Systematic Framework For Evaluating Treated Wastewater Usage In Agricultural Irrigation, Yasser Kamal Nazzal May 2005

Systematic Framework For Evaluating Treated Wastewater Usage In Agricultural Irrigation, Yasser Kamal Nazzal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A general systematic framework with several sub-frameworks was developed to help managers make informed decisions related to the reuse of treated wastewater in agricultural irrigation. The framework involves the identification and evaluation of the short- and long-term effects of using treated wastewater with some common constituents of concern (e.g. salts and some specific ions, nutrients, heavy metals, organic compounds, and microorganisms) on the environmental elements (crop, soils, surface water, and groundwater), and on the public health. Local and/ or international standards, criteria, and guidelines related to agricultural reuse are applied to the evaluation of the effects. Based on the evaluation …

Nanoindentation Technique For Characterizing Cantilever Beam Style Rf Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Switches, Hyukjae Lee, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Shankar Mall, Paul E. Kladitis Apr 2005

Nanoindentation Technique For Characterizing Cantilever Beam Style Rf Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Switches, Hyukjae Lee, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Shankar Mall, Paul E. Kladitis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A nanoindentation technique was used to mechanically actuate a radio frequency micro-switch along with the measurement of contact resistance to investigate its applicability to characterize deflection and contact resistance behaviors of micro-sized cantilever beam switches. The resulting load–displacement relationship showed a discontinuity in slope when the micro-switch closed. The measured spring constants reasonably agreed with theoretical values obtained from the simple beam models. The change in contact resistance during test clearly indicated micro-switch closure but it did not coincide exactly with the physical contact between two electric contacts due to a resistive contaminated film.

Adaptive Blind Multiuser Detection Over Flat Fast Fading Channels Using Particle Filtering, Yufei Huang, Jianqiu Zhang, Isabel Tienda Luna, Petar M. Djuric, Diego Pablo Ruiz Padillo Apr 2005

Adaptive Blind Multiuser Detection Over Flat Fast Fading Channels Using Particle Filtering, Yufei Huang, Jianqiu Zhang, Isabel Tienda Luna, Petar M. Djuric, Diego Pablo Ruiz Padillo

Electrical & Computer Engineering

We propose a method for blind multiuser detection (MUD) in synchronous systems over flat and fast Rayleigh fading channels. We adopt an autoregressive-moving-average (ARMA) process to model the temporal correlation of the channels. Based on the ARMA process, we propose a novel time-observation state-space model (TOSSM) that describes the dynamics of the addressed multiuser system. The TOSSM allows an MUD with natural blending of low-complexity particle filtering (PF) and mixture Kalman filtering (for channel estimation). We further propose to use a more efficient PF algorithm known as the stochastic -algorithm (SMA), which, although having lower complexity than the generic PF …

Slip Behavior In Liquid Films On Surfaces Of Patterned Wettability: Comparison Between Continuum And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Anton A. Darhuber, Sandra M. Troian Apr 2005

Slip Behavior In Liquid Films On Surfaces Of Patterned Wettability: Comparison Between Continuum And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Anton A. Darhuber, Sandra M. Troian

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

We investigate the behavior of the slip length in Newtonian liquids subject to planar shear bounded by substrates with mixed boundary conditions. The upper wall, consisting of a homogenous surface of finite or vanishing slip, moves at a constant speed parallel to a lower stationary wall, whose surface is patterned with an array of stripes representing alternating regions of no shear and finite or no slip. Velocity fields and effective slip lengths are computed both from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and solution of the Stokes equation for flow configurations either parallel or perpendicular to the stripes. Excellent agreement between the …

Use Of Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy For Stress-Strain Measurements: Quarterly Progress Report (December 01, 2004 – February 28, 2005), Ajit K. Roy

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this collaborative research project involving the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), the Idaho State University (ISU), and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is to evaluate the feasibility of determining residual stresses in cold-worked, plastically-deformed (bent), and welded materials using a nondestructive method based on positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS). This technique uses γ-rays from a small MeV electron Linac to generate positrons inside the sample via pair production. This method is known to have capabilities of characterizing defects in thick specimens that could not be accomplished by conventional positron technique or other nondestructive methods. The data …

Effect Of Silicon Content On The Corrosion Resistance And Radiation-Induced Embrittlement Of Materials For Advanced Heavy Liquid Metal Nuclear Systems: Quarterly Progress Report (November 2004 – January 2005), Ajit K. Roy

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

This proposal is intended to study the effect of Si content not only on the corrosion resistance but also on the radiation-induced embrittlement of martensitic stainless steels. The susceptibility of these alloys with different Si content to stress corrosion cracking, general corrosion and localized corrosion will be evaluated in the molten LBE and aqueous environments of different pH values using state-of-the-art testing techniques. Testing in the aqueous media is intended to develop baseline data for comparison purpose. Radiation-induced embrittlement of these alloys will initially be studied by irradiating the test specimens with bremmstrahlung gamma radiation from 20-40 MeV electron beams …

Static Determination Of Allocation Rates To Support Real-Time Garbage Collection, Tobias Mann Apr 2005

Static Determination Of Allocation Rates To Support Real-Time Garbage Collection, Tobias Mann

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

While it is generally accepted that garbage-collected languages offer advantages over languages in which objects must be explicitly deallocated, real-time developers are leery of the adverse effects a garbage collector might have on real-time performance. Semiautomatic approaches based on regions have been proposed, but incorrect usage could cause unbounded storage leaks or program failure. Moreover, correct usage cannot be guaranteed at compile-time. Recently, real-time garbage collectors have been developed that provide a guaranteed fraction of the CPU to the application, and the correct operation of those collectors has been proven, subject only to the specification of certain statistics related to …

The Social And Economic Costs Of Employee Misclassification In The Maine Construction Industry, Françoise Carré, Randall Wilson Apr 2005

The Social And Economic Costs Of Employee Misclassification In The Maine Construction Industry, Françoise Carré, Randall Wilson

Center for Social Policy Publications

With this study, a cross disciplinary team of the Center for Construction Policy Research has taken a first and significant step in documenting employee misclassification in the Maine construction industry. This report documents the dimensions of misclassification and its implications for tax collection and worker compensation insurance.

Misclassification occurs when employers treat workers who would otherwise be waged or salaried employees as independent contractors (self employed). Or as one report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Labor put it, misclassification occurs “when workers (who should be) getting W-2 forms for income tax filing instead receive 1099-Miscellaneous Income forms."
