A Symmetric Green Function For The Non-Collinear Magnetic Multilayer, Mikhail Ye Zhuravlev, John D. Burton, A. V. Vedyayev, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Symmetry properties of the Green function in magnetic multilayers with noncollinear magnetization of the layers are investigated on the basis of the transfer matrix method. The Green function symmetric with respect to permutation of its arguments is constructed. It is shown how the boundary conditions can be imposed on this Green function.

We have proposed a constructive way to build a symmetric one-electron GF for the magnetic multilayer with magnetization in the plane of the layers. To build this GF we solved the following problems: finding the solution of the systems of differential equations of general form; matching the solutions …

Modeling Interface Failure In Fiber-Composites, Andrew J. Craig

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Interface failure has been studied in depth for more than the past twenty years due to its significant impact on the application of composite materials. The objective of this work is to investigate the role of the interface in the mechanical response of fiber-matrix composite materials subjected to an applied load. To do this, a single composite cylinder consisting of a rigid core, the fiber, and an elastic annulus, the matrix, with an interface of vanishing thickness separating them, is considered as the first step in what will later be representative of a composite material. Three non-linear, Needleman-type, force-separation relations …

Furnaces are among the most crucial components in the glass and metallurgical industry. Nowadays, furnaces are being operated at higher temperatures and for longer periods of time thus increasing the rate of wear on the furnace refractory lining. Consequently, there is a great need for a nondestructive tool that can accurately measure refractory wall thickness at high temperatures. In this paper the utility of a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FM-CW) radar is investigated for this purpose.

Spare Line Borrowing Technique For Distributed Memory Cores In Soc, B. Jang, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park, Vincenzo Piuri, Fabrizio Lombardi, Yong-Bin Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a new architecture of distributed embedded memory cores for SoC is proposed and an effective memory repair method by using the proposed Spare Line Borrowing (software-driven reconfiguration) technique is investigated. It is known that faulty cells in memory core show spatial locality, also known as fault clustering. This physical phenomenon tends to occur more often as deep submicron technology advances due to defects that span multiple circuit elements and sophisticated circuit design. The combination of new architecture & repair method proposed in this paper ensures fault tolerance enhancement in SoC, especially in case of fault clustering. This …

Modern Laboratory-Based Education For Power Electronics And Electric Machines, Robert S. Balog, Zakdy Sorchini, Jonathan W. Kimball, Patrick L. Chapman, Philip T. Krein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The study of modern energy conversion draws upon a broad range of knowledge and often requires a fair amount of experience. This suggests that laboratory instruction should be an integral component of a power electronics and electric machines curriculum. However, before a single watt can be processed in a realistic way, the student must understand not only the operation of conversion systems but also more advanced concepts such as control theory, speed and position sensing, switching signal generation, gate drive isolation, circuit layout, and other critical issues. Our approach is to use a blue-box module where these details are pre-built …

Glucose Oxidase (God)-Coupled Amperometric Microsensor With Integrated Electrochemical Actuation System, Jongwon Park, Chang-Soo Kim, Minsu Choi, Shanrui Zhang May 2005

Glucose Oxidase (God)-Coupled Amperometric Microsensor With Integrated Electrochemical Actuation System, Jongwon Park, Chang-Soo Kim, Minsu Choi, Shanrui Zhang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent developments for biosensors have been mainly focused on miniaturization and exploratory use of new materials. It should be emphasized that the absence of a novel "in-situ self-calibration/diagnosis technique" that is not connected to an external apparatus is a key obstacle to the realization of a biosensor for continuous use with minimum attendance. In order to address this issue, a novel solid-state glucose oxidase-coupled amperometric biosensor with integrated electrochemical actuation system has been designed and validated. There are two key components of the proposed glucose biosensor: solid-state GOD-coupled thin-lm amperometric sensing element and O2 depleting/saturating built-in electrochemical actuator. The …

Advanced Control Of Cascaded Multilevel Drives Based On P-Q Theory, Shuai Lu, Keith Corzine, T. H. Fikse May 2005

Advanced Control Of Cascaded Multilevel Drives Based On P-Q Theory, Shuai Lu, Keith Corzine, T. H. Fikse

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years, there has been significant development on the cascaded multilevel inverter wherein the series connection is accomplished by splitting the neutral point of the load and driving both ends with power converters. This splits the power between a "bulk" inverter supplying higher-voltage low-frequency power and a "conditioning" inverter supplying low-voltage high-frequency power and leads to exceptional power quality which is necessary in applications such as naval propulsion that require extremely low THD. This paper reports the development of a new control method for the cascaded multi-level inverter. The primary advantage of this new control is that the bulk …

Dielectric Material Characterization By Complex Ratio Of Embedded Modulated Scatterer Technique States, Gabriel S. Freiburger, R. Zoughi May 2005

Dielectric Material Characterization By Complex Ratio Of Embedded Modulated Scatterer Technique States, Gabriel S. Freiburger, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The embedded modulated scatterer technique (MST) is an innovative tool which can be used for microwave dielectric characterization of infrastructure and composite structures. By impinging a microwave signal on a loaded thin dipole antenna embedded in a material whose dielectric properties are sought, the resulting refelction data can be used to inversely solve for the dielectric properties of interest. Previous investigations utilized reflection information from a single loaded dipole and required known system parameters, such as radiator polarization vs. dipole alignment and relative distance between radiator and probe, to solve for the sought-for dielectric properties. This paper explores a unique …

Sensitivity And Uncertainty Analysis Coupled With Automatic Calibration For A Distributed Watershed Model, Misgana K. Muleta, John W. Nicklow

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Distributed watershed models should pass through a careful calibration procedure before they are utilized as a decision making aid in the planning and management of water resources. Although manual approaches are still frequently used for calibration, they are tedious, time consuming, and require experienced personnel. This paper describes an automatic approach for calibrating daily streamflow and daily sediment concentration values estimated by the US Department of Agriculture’s distributed watershed simulation model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The automatic calibration methodology applies a hierarchy of three techniques, namely screening, parameterization, and parameter sensitivity analysis, at the parameter identification stage of …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

More than one million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the United States and more than ten thousand people die from the disease. Currently, there are some methods for early detection of skin cancers, like visual inspection, but improvements are needed. This paper presents a method involving microwave reflectometry as a diagnostic tool for detection of skin cancers. The results of measurements and simulations for normal and wet skin have been shown to distinguish among skin samples with different properties. Microwave measurements from lesions have also been presented which are used to distinguish between cancerous and benign …

Millimeter Wave Detection Of Localized Anomalies In The Space Shuttle External Fuel Tank Insulating Foam And Acreage Heat Tiles, Sergey Kharkovsky, R. Zoughi, J. T. Case, F. L. Hepburn May 2005

Millimeter Wave Detection Of Localized Anomalies In The Space Shuttle External Fuel Tank Insulating Foam And Acreage Heat Tiles, Sergey Kharkovsky, R. Zoughi, J. T. Case, F. L. Hepburn

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Undesired manufactured or in-service produced anomalies in the form of voids in the SOFI and unbonds in the heat tiles can significantly reduce their designed effectiveness. Additionally, unbonds in the heat tiles may cause their complete separation from the fuselage exposing it to extreme heat. Millimeter wave NDT methods are viable candidate for life-cycle inspection of the SOFI and the acreage heat tiles of the Space Shuttle fleet. The results of these investigations described in this paper clearly showed the utility of these methods for detecting localized anomalies in thick SOFI and acreage heat tiles. These methods are fast and …

Wide-Band Lorentzian Media In The Fdtd Algorithm, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak, David Pommerenke, Giulio Antonini, Antonio Orlandi, Konstantin Rozanov May 2005

Wide-Band Lorentzian Media In The Fdtd Algorithm, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak, David Pommerenke, Giulio Antonini, Antonio Orlandi, Konstantin Rozanov

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper considers the case of a wide-band Lorentzian (WBL) algorithm in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling of dispersive media. It is shown herein that the WBL model is a physically meaningful and practically useful case of the frequency behavior of materials along with the Debye and narrow-band Lorentzian (NBL). The recursive convolution algorithms for the finite-difference time-domain technique for NBL and WBL models differ. The Debye model, which is suitable for comparatively low-frequency dispersive materials, may not have sufficient number of parameters for describing the wide-band material, especially if this material exhibits pronounced absorption at higher frequencies. It is …

Coupling Between Differential Signals And The Dc Power-Bus In Multilayer Pcbs, Chen Wang, Marco Leone, James L. Drewniak, Antonio Orlandi May 2005

Coupling Between Differential Signals And The Dc Power-Bus In Multilayer Pcbs, Chen Wang, Marco Leone, James L. Drewniak, Antonio Orlandi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Differential and common-mode transfer impedances are proposed herein to analyze noise coupled to (from) the dc power-bus from (to) via transitions in differential signals. Expressions for the two transfer impedances in terms of conventional single-ended transfer impedances are derived and verified through measurements, full-wave finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and an analytical cavity model. Some properties of the differential and common-mode transfer impedances are investigated to facilitate engineering design. The impact of signal current imbalances on power-bus noise and the benefit of differential signals as compared to single-ended signals are quantified.

Survey Of Clustering Algorithms, Rui Xu, Donald C. Wunsch May 2005

Survey Of Clustering Algorithms, Rui Xu, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Data analysis plays an indispensable role for understanding various phenomena. Cluster analysis, primitive exploration with little or no prior knowledge, consists of research developed across a wide variety of communities. The diversity, on one hand, equips us with many tools. On the other hand, the profusion of options causes confusion. We survey clustering algorithms for data sets appearing in statistics, computer science, and machine learning, and illustrate their applications in some benchmark data sets, the traveling salesman problem, and bioinformatics, a new field attracting intensive efforts. Several tightly related topics, proximity measure, and cluster validation, are also discussed.

The Wettability Of Titanium Diboride By Molten Aluminum Drops, D. A. Weirauch, W. J. Krafick, G. Ackart, P. D. Ownby

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Titanium diboride is widely accepted to be completely wet by liquid aluminum, yet few published wetting studies demonstrate this behavior, and reported contact angles vary widely. Sessile drop substrates from four different sources were selected and their microstructures and chemistries characterized. the results of sessile drop experiments using four techniques to modify oxide film behavior were compared. the Al-TiB2 interfaces were examined in metallographic sections or after chemical removal of the Al drop. Al wets a material containing 5.5 wt% Ni in vacuum experiments before the hold temperature of 1025°C is reached. the other TiB2 substrates are completely wet by …

Alterations In Wall Shear Stress Predict Sites Of Neointimal Hyperplasia After Stent Implantation In Rabbit Iliac Arteries, John F. Ladisa, Lars E. Olson, Robert C. Molthen, Douglas Anthony Hettrick, Phillip F. Pratt, Michael D. Hardel, Judy R. Kersten, David C. Warltier, Paul S. Pagel

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Restenosis resulting from neointimal hyperplasia (NH) limits the effectiveness of intravascular stents. Rates of restenosis vary with stent geometry, but whether stents affect spatial and temporal distributions of wall shear stress (WSS) in vivo is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that alterations in spatial WSS after stent implantation predict sites of NH in rabbit iliac arteries. Antegrade iliac artery stent implantation was performed under angiography, and blood flow was measured before casting 14 or 21 days after implantation. Iliac artery blood flow domains were obtained from three-dimensional microfocal X-ray computed tomography imaging and reconstruction of the arterial casts. Indexes of …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Efficient gene delivery is a fundamental goal of biotechnology and has numerous applications in both basic and applied science. Substrate-mediated delivery and reverse transfection enhance gene transfer by increasing the concentration of DNA in the cellular microenvironment through immobilizing a plasmid to a cell culture substrate prior to cell seeding. In this report, we examine gene delivery of plasmids that were complexed with cationic polymers (polyplexes) or lipids (lipoplexes) and subsequently immobilized to cell culture or biomaterial substrates by adsorption. Polyplexes and lipoplexes were adsorbed to either tissue culture polystyrene or serum-adsorbed tissue culture polystyrene. The quantity of DNA immobilized …

Synthesizing E-Government Stage Models – A Meta-Synthesis Based On Meta-Ethnography Approach, Keng Siau, Y. Long

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The growing interest in e-government raises the question of stages in e-government development. A few stage models for e-government have been proposed. Without a common e-government stage model, different research in e-government may be based on different stage models. This presents a difficulty in comparing and understanding different research results. In this research, we synthesize the existing e-government stage models so that there is a common frame of reference for researchers and practitioners in the area.
