Basic Engineering Science --- A Systems, Accounting, And Modeling Approach, Donald E. Richards Jan 2001

Basic Engineering Science --- A Systems, Accounting, And Modeling Approach, Donald E. Richards

Faculty Publications - Mechanical Engineering

This textbook is based on a different paradigm for organizing an engineering science core --- a systems, accounting and modeling approach --- that emphasizes the common, underlying concepts of engineering science. Although this approach is not new, as most graduate students have been struck by this idea sometime during their graduate education, its use as the organizing principle for an undergraduate curriculum is new. By focusing on the underlying concepts and stressing the similarities between subjects that are often perceived by students (and taught by faculty) as unconnected topics, this approach provides engineering students a foundational framework for recognizing and …

Permeability Performance Of High-Performance Concrete Subjected To Various Curing Regimes, John J. Myers Jan 2001

Permeability Performance Of High-Performance Concrete Subjected To Various Curing Regimes, John J. Myers

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Concrete technology has continued to advance throughout the years to meet the demands of designers and innovative structural systems. Traditionally, the most common means to specify durable concrete has been via specifying a maximum water-to-cementitious material ratio or a minimum cement content. With the advent of high-performance concrete (HPC), which often has higher contents of cementitious materials and a variety of admixtures, questions about permeability performance and alternative methods to specify durable concrete have arisen. The study conducted herein comments on the applicability of prescriptive specifications for HPC and investigates the influence of curing regimes and concrete temperature development during …

Biofeedback Via Telehealth: A New Frontier For Applied Psychophysiology, Raymond A. Folen, Larry C. James, Jay E. Earles, Frank Andrasik Jan 2001

Biofeedback Via Telehealth: A New Frontier For Applied Psychophysiology, Raymond A. Folen, Larry C. James, Jay E. Earles, Frank Andrasik

United States Army: Publications

Psychophysiological diagnostic and therapeutic methods, to include biofeedback, have been found to be empirically effective in the treatment of a variety of physical disorders. In many areas of the country, however, certified biofeedback practitioners are not well distributed, limiting patient access to this treatment modality. Psychologists at Tripler Army Medical Center have pioneered efforts to develop and provide these needed services via a telehealth venue. Such capability significantly improves access to care, particularly for patient’s located at considerable distance from the provider. As the telecommunications infrastructure in rural and remote areas is often quite basic, such a system must be …

Energy Reduction By Enhanced Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings In Martime Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn Jan 2001

Energy Reduction By Enhanced Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings In Martime Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn

Conference Papers

Direct cooling of buildings by water evaporation has traditionally been seen as appropriate, only, in dry and arid climates, which experience high levels of wet bulb temperature depression. The technique has generally not been applied in maritime climates where low levels of wet bulb temperature depression are frequently found. However, recent developments in enhancing heat and mass transfer in cooling towers, together with the success of high temperature sensible cooling systems, such as chilled ceiling panels and beams, have prompted a review of the evaporative cooling technique as an effective and low energy means of cooling modern deep plan buildings, …

A Method Of Implementing The Interleaver In 3g Wireless Communication Systems For Randomization Of Burst Errors, Eric Duquette Jan 2001

A Method Of Implementing The Interleaver In 3g Wireless Communication Systems For Randomization Of Burst Errors, Eric Duquette

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

In less than a year or two, third generation ( 3G) wireless communication systems will be replacing the currently existing second generation (2G) wireless systems and be used worldwide. The 3G systems will have a higher data transfer capacity, which allows for simultaneous data, voice, and video transfer (e.g., multimedia applications) while most of 2G systems only allow for low-rate data and voice transfer. The wireless communications industry has set standards for 3G, which detail various operations of the technology. It should be noted that the 3G standards outline only the different operations and not the processes for the production …

This sequence includes four courses from the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department: Electrical Systems, and …

A Two-Stage Decoder For Pragmatic Trellis-Coded M-Psk Modulation Using A Symbol Transformation, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Advait Mogre Jan 2001

A Two-Stage Decoder For Pragmatic Trellis-Coded M-Psk Modulation Using A Symbol Transformation, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Advait Mogre

Faculty Publications

A two-stage decoding procedure for pragmatic trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is introduced. It applies a transformation from the received I-channel and Q-channel samples onto points in a two-dimensional (2-D) signal space that contains a coset constellation. For pragmatic TCM over M-PSK signal sets with ν coded bits per symbol, ν=1, 2, the signal points in the coset constellations represent cosets of a B/QPSK signal subset-associated with the coded bits-in the original M-PSK signal constellation. A conventional Viterbi decoder operates on the transformed symbols to estimate the coded bits. After reencoding these bits, the uncoded bits are estimated in a second stage, …

A Method Of Non-Data-Aided Carrier Recovery With Modulation Identification, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Kenta Umebayashi, Ryuji Kohno Jan 2001

A Method Of Non-Data-Aided Carrier Recovery With Modulation Identification, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Kenta Umebayashi, Ryuji Kohno

Faculty Publications

A non-data aided carrier recovery technique using modulation format identification is proposed. This technique can also be interpreted as a modulation identification method that is robust against static phase and frequency offsets. The performance of the proposed technique is studied and analytical expressions derived for the mean acquisition time to detect lock in the cases of M-PSK, M=2,4,8, and 16-QAM modulation, with respect to frequency offset and signal-to-noise ratio. The results are verified with Monte Carlo simulations. The main advantage of the proposed method lies in its simpler implementation and faster lock detection, when compared to conventional methods.

Flowers For The World: Developing A Business Game To Support The Teaching Of Is Concepts, Trevor T. Moores, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang

Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research

One of the key problems in teaching fundamental concepts in information systems is how to ground the theory in experiences that the students can relate to. To overcome this problem, a business game called Flowers For The World has been developed and used across a wide variety of IS courses. This paper will describe the game and the result of using it for a 300-level course in analysis and design. The possibility exists that the game could be developed to provide a common business foundation across all business school curricula.

Fuzzy Set Ranking Methods And Multiple Expert Decision Making, Predrag Prodanovic Jan 2001

Fuzzy Set Ranking Methods And Multiple Expert Decision Making, Predrag Prodanovic

Water Resources Research Report

The present report further investigates the multi-criteria decision making tool named Fuzzy Compromise Programming. Comparison of different fuzzy set ranking methods (required for processing fuzzy information) is performed. A complete sensitivity analysis concerning decision maker’s risk preferences was carried out for three water resources systems, and compromise solutions identified. Then, a weights sensitivity analysis was performed on one of the three systems to see whether the rankings would change in response to changing weights. It was found that this particular system was robust to the changes in weights.

An inquiry was made into the possibility of modifying Fuzzy Compromise Programming …

The Role Of Mechanical Design In Mechatronics Education, John Gardner Jan 2001

The Role Of Mechanical Design In Mechatronics Education, John Gardner

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A survey of Mechatronics course offerings around the United States shows a rich variety of approaches to this topic.[1] Indeed, it appears that a majority of Mechanical Engineering programs across the county offer some formal offering in this area and it seems clear that the vast majority of Mechatronics courses are offered through Mechanical Engineering departments. With the traditional emphasis on design skill in mechanical engineering, it would seem obvious that mechatronics courses would feature a major design component. Surprisingly, very few existing mechatronics courses (at least those reported in the literature) feature a strong emphasis on mechanical design. That …

Manipulating Dna Conformation Using Intertwined Conducting Polymer Chains, Ramaswamy Nagarajan, Wei Liu, Jayant Kumar, Sukant K. Tripathy, Ferdinando F. Bruno, Lynne A. Samuelson

United States Army: Publications

In the field of inherently conducting polymers, polyaniline (Pani) has elicited tremendous interest due to its promising electrical properties and unique redox tunability. Synthetic routes involving the use of polyelectrolytes have significantly improved the processability of polyaniline. Recently, a template guided synthesis catalyzed by an enzyme, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), has provided a means of polymerizing aniline under milder pH conditions (pH 4.3) and subsequently widened the choice of templates to more delicate biological macromolecules. Here we report a strategy that exploits the inherent molecular order as well as the polyelectrolyte behavior of DNA to enzymatically synthesize and biologically assemble conducting …

U.S. Air Force Long-Range Strike Aircraft White Paper, United States Air Force

United States Air Force: Publications

As a result of DoD transformation plans and recent operational experience (Air War Over Serbia and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM) portions of the 1999 U.S. Air Force White Paper on Long Range Bombers have become outmoded. In October 2001, the Secretary of the Air Force directed an updated Long-range Strike Aircraft White Paper incorporating our new defense planning guidance. This document provides an update to the 1999 White Paper and reflects current decisions concerning bomber force structure and basing. While modification plans remain largely intact, the focus has been refined to support the Global Strike Task Force concept.

Lab Fattening And Non-Invasive Estimates Of Body Composition In Deer Mice, Edward T. Unangst, Michael J. Blair, Matthew W. Granger, David W. Hale Jan 2001

Lab Fattening And Non-Invasive Estimates Of Body Composition In Deer Mice, Edward T. Unangst, Michael J. Blair, Matthew W. Granger, David W. Hale

United States Air Force: Publications

Total body electrical conductivity measurements and lipid composition were determined for the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) to derive species specific calibration equations for use with EM-SCAN estimates of lean and fat tissue. For each individual, total body electrical conductivity was measured by EM-SCAN, and actual lipid content was determined by chemical extraction. Then, using estimated and actual lipid values, separate calibration equations were generated for freshly captured (lean) and laboratory maintained (fat) individuals, and a combined equation was derived for all individuals. These equations were variable in the accuracy of lipid estimates; the lowest relative error estimate (percent …

Chemical Insights From High-Resolution X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy And Ab Initio Theory: Propyne, Trifluoropropyne, And Ethynylsulfur Pentafluoride, Leif J. Sæthre, Nora Berrah, John D. Bozek, Knut J. Borve, Thomas X. Carroll, Edwin Kukk, Gary L. Gard, Rolf Winter, T. Darrah Thomas

United States Department of Energy: Publications

High-resolution carbon 1s photoelectron spectroscopy of propyne (HC=CH3) shows a spectrum in which the contributions from the three chemically inequivalent carbons are clearly resolved and marked by distinct vibrational structure. This structure is well accounted for by ab initio theory. For 3,3,3-trifluoropropyne (HC=CF3) and ethynylsulfur pentafluoride (HC=SF5), the ethynyl carbons show only a broad structure and have energies that differ only slightly from one another. The core-ionization energies can be qualitatively understood in terms of conventional resonance structures; the vibrational broadening for the fluorinated compounds can be understood in terms of the effects of …

The reductive biotransformation of a Ni2+-substituted (5 mol %) hydrous ferric oxide (NiHFO) by Shewanella putrefaciens, strain CN32, was investigated under anoxic conditions at circumneutral pH. Our objectives were to define the influence of Ni2+ substitution on the bioreducibility of the HFO and the biomineralization products formed and to identify biogeochemical factors controlling the phase distribution of Ni2+ during bioreduction. Incubations with CN32 and NiHFO were sampled after 14 and 32 d, and both aqueous chemistry and solid phases were characterized. By comparison of these results with a previous study (Fredrickson, J. K.; Zachara, J. M.; …

Dissimilatory Bacterial Reduction Of Al-Substituted Goethite In Subsurface Sediments, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, John M. Zachara, Steven C. Smith, James K. Fredrickson, Chongxuan Liu Jan 2001

Dissimilatory Bacterial Reduction Of Al-Substituted Goethite In Subsurface Sediments, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, John M. Zachara, Steven C. Smith, James K. Fredrickson, Chongxuan Liu

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The microbiologic reduction of a 0.2 to 2.0 µm size fraction of an Atlantic coastal plain sediment (Eatontown) was investigated using a dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacterium (Shewanella putrefaciens, strain CN32) to evaluate mineralogic controls on the rate and extent of Fe(III) reduction and the resulting distribution of biogenic Fe(II). Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to show that the sedimentary Fe (III) oxide was Al-substituted goethite (13–17% Al) that existed as 1- to 5-µm aggregates of indistinct morphology. Bioreduction experiments were performed in two buffers [HCO3; 1,4-piperazinediethansulfonic acid (PIPES)] both without and with 2,6-anthraquinone …

Kinetics And Mechanism Of Birnessite Reduction By Catechol, Christopher J. Matocha, Donald L. Sparks, James E. Amonette, Ravi K. Kukkadapu

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The complex interactions of oxidizable organic ligands with soil Mn(III,IV) (hydr)oxide minerals have received little study by in situspectroscopic techniques. We used a combination of an in situ electron paramagnetic resonance stopped-flow (EPR-SF) spectroscopic technique and stirred-batch studies to measure the reductive dissolution kinetics of birnessite (δ-MnO2), a common Mn mineral in soils, by catechol (1,2-dihydroxybenzene). The reaction was rapid, independent of pH, and essentially complete within seconds under conditions of excess catechol at pH 4 to 6. The overall empirical second-order rate equation describing the reductive dissolution rate was d[Mn(II)]/dt = k[CAT]1.0[SA]1.0 where …

Distribution And Retention Of 137cs In Sediments At The Hanford Site, Washington, James Mckinley, Cynthia Zeissler, John M. Zachara, R. Jeffrey Serne, Richard Lindstrom, Herbert Schaef, Robert Orr Jan 2001

Distribution And Retention Of 137cs In Sediments At The Hanford Site, Washington, James Mckinley, Cynthia Zeissler, John M. Zachara, R. Jeffrey Serne, Richard Lindstrom, Herbert Schaef, Robert Orr

United States Department of Energy: Publications

137Cesium and other contaminants have leaked from single-shell storage tanks (SSTs) into coarse-textured, relatively unweathered unconsolidated sediments. Contaminated sediments were retrieved from beneath a leaky SST to investigate the distribution of adsorbed 137Cs+ across different sediment size fractions. All fractions contained mica (biotite, muscovite, vermiculatized biotite), quartz, and plagioclase along with smectite and kaolinite in the clay-size fraction. A phosphor-plate autoradiograph method was used to identify particular sediment particles responsible for retaining 137Cs+. The Cs-bearing particles were found to be individual mica flakes or agglomerated smectite, mica, quartz, and plagioclase. Of these, only the …

Kinetic Analysis Of The Bacterial Reduction Of Goethite, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, James K. Fredrickson, Cynthia Brinkman Jan 2001

Kinetic Analysis Of The Bacterial Reduction Of Goethite, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, James K. Fredrickson, Cynthia Brinkman

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The kinetics of dissimilatory reduction of goethite (RFeOOH) was studied in batch cultures of a groundwater bacterium, Shewanella putrefaciens, strain CN32 in pH 7 bicarbonate buffer. The rate and extent of goethite reduction were measured as a function of electron acceptor (goethite) and donor (lactate) concentrations. Increasing goethite concentrations increased both the rate and extent of Fe(III) reduction when cell and lactate concentrations were held constant. However, constant initial reduction rates were observed after normalization to the Fe(II) sorption capacity of FeOOH, suggesting that the bacterial reduction rate was first order with respect to surface site concentration. Increasing …

Microbial Reduction Of Fe(Iii) And Sorption/Precipitation Of Fe(Ii) On Shewanella Putrefaciens Strain Cn32, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, Yuri Gorby, Jim Szecsody, Christopher Brown Jan 2001

Microbial Reduction Of Fe(Iii) And Sorption/Precipitation Of Fe(Ii) On Shewanella Putrefaciens Strain Cn32, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, Yuri Gorby, Jim Szecsody, Christopher Brown

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The influence of Fe(II) on the dissimilatory bacterial reduction of an Fe(III) aqueous complex (Fe(III)-citrateaq) was investigated using Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32. The sorption of Fe(II) on CN32 followed a Langmuir isotherm. Least-squares fitting gave a maximum sorption capacity of Qmax = 4.19 x 10-3 mol/1012 cells (1.19 mmol/ m2 of cell surface area) and an affinity coefficient of log K = 3.29. The growth yield of CN32 with respect to Fe(III)aq reduction showed a linear trend with an average value of 5.24 (±0.12) x 109 cells/mmol of Fe(III). The reduction of …

Uncertainties Of Monod Kinetic Parameters Nonlinearly Estimated From Batch Experiments, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara Jan 2001

Uncertainties Of Monod Kinetic Parameters Nonlinearly Estimated From Batch Experiments, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Monod kinetic parameters (Ks, µmax, and Y) that are estimated from batch experimental data can have large uncertainties due to linear correlations between them. The degree of correlation and the resulting uncertainties of the Monod parameters are functions of the initial experimental conditions, the values of the parameters, the type and magnitude of measurement errors, and the sampling number. Careful manipulation of experimental conditions can reduce the correlations between Monod parameters allowing for the estimation of Monod kinetic parameters with the lowest degree of uncertainty. By dimensionless analysis, the correlation and relative standard deviations of Monod parameters …
