Characterization Of Su-8 5 For Mems Applications, Sean Corcoran Jan 2001

Characterization Of Su-8 5 For Mems Applications, Sean Corcoran

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

SIJ-8 is a negative photoresist that is mainly used for MEMS technology. It is currently being used l~r micro-machined gears, accelerometers, and host of other MEMS structures. In these types of MEMS devices it is important to get an image with nearly vertical sidewall angles. For example with a micromachined gear, the gear would slip easily if the gears sidewall angle not near vertical. The focus of this project was to model the sidewall angle through a designed experiment and an ANOVA was run on the data using a computer program. Also, using a linear regression analysis the functionality of …

Application Of Dynamic System Identification To Timber Beams - Part I, S T. Peterson, D I. Mclean, M D. Symans, David Pollock, W F. Cofer, R N. Emerson, Kenneth J. Fridley

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

In this first part of a two-part paper, development of a method of dynamic system identification for timber beams is presented with an analytical verification of the method using a finite-element model. A method of global nondestructive evaluation for identifying local damage and decay in timber beams is investigated in this paper. Experimental modal analysis is used in conjunction with a previously developed damage localization algorithm. The damage localization algorithm utilizes changes in modal strain energy between the mode shapes of a calibrated model, representing the undamaged state of the beam of interest, and the experimentally obtained mode shapes for …

A Process Theory Of Competency Rallying In Engineering Projects, Bernhard R. Katzy, Kevin Crowston Jan 2001

A Process Theory Of Competency Rallying In Engineering Projects, Bernhard R. Katzy, Kevin Crowston

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Firms face an environment changing at an increasingly rapid pace. Market opportunities in particular can arise and disappear in a short time. Unfortunately, the speed with which organizations can adapt their strategies and competencies to meet these opportunities remains limited. We argue that firms can address these individual limitations by cooperating with others for access to market opportunities and needed competencies. In this paper, we present a process theory of how a network of firms can reliably engineering and deliver products in the face of rapid market changes. In this theory, the success of the network is predicated on 1) …

Fpc Residential Monitoring Project: New Technology Development Radiant Barrier Pilot Project, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The FPC Monitoring project has evaluated radiant barrier systems (RBS) as a new potential DSM program. The objective was to examine how the retrofit of attic radiant barriers can be expected to alter FPC residential space conditioning loads. An RBS consists of a layer of aluminum foil fastened to roof decking or roof trusses to block radiant heat transfer between the hot roof surface and the attic below. The radiant barrier can significantly lower summer heat transfer to the attic insulation and to the cooling duct system. Both of these mechanisms have strong potential impacts on cooling energy use as …

Giant Photoresistivity And Optically Controlled Switching In Self-Assembled Nanowires, N. Kouklin, L. Menon, A. Z. Wong, D. W. Thompson, J. A. Woollam, P. F. Williams, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay Jan 2001

Giant Photoresistivity And Optically Controlled Switching In Self-Assembled Nanowires, N. Kouklin, L. Menon, A. Z. Wong, D. W. Thompson, J. A. Woollam, P. F. Williams, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

We report the observation of giant photoresistivity in electrochemically self-assembledCdS and ZnSenanowireselectrodeposited in a porous alumina film. The resistance of these nanowires increases by one to two orders of magnitude when exposed to infrared radiation, possibly because of real-space transfer of electrons from the nanowires into the surrounding alumina by photon absorption. This phenomenon has potential applications in “normally on” infrared photodetectors and optically controlled switches.

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

In a companion paper, a method of global nondestructive evaluation (NDE) for identifying local damage and decay in timber beams was developed and verified analytically using a finite-element model of a timber beam. The previously presented method of damage localization employs experimental modal analysis and an algorithm that monitors changes in modal strain energy between the mode shapes of a damaged beam with respect to the undamaged state of the beam. In this second part of a two-part paper, experimental laboratory tests on simply supported timber beams are presented to verify the capabilities and determine the limitations of the proposed …

The Prospect For Answer Sets Computation By A Genetic Model, A. Bertoni, G. Grossi, A. Provetti, Vladik Kreinovich, L. Tari Jan 2001

The Prospect For Answer Sets Computation By A Genetic Model, A. Bertoni, G. Grossi, A. Provetti, Vladik Kreinovich, L. Tari

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We combine recent results from both Logic Programming and Genetic Algorithms to design a new method for the efficent computation of Answer Sets of logic programs. First of all the problem is reduced to the problem of finding a suitable coloring on directed graphs. Then the problem of finding a suitable coloring is relaxed to a combinatorial optimization problem and solved (in an approximate way) by a continuous discrete time system derived by a genetic model.

A Modal Pushover Analysis Procedure To Estimate Seismic Demands For Buildings: Theory And Preliminary Evaluation, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel Jan 2001

A Modal Pushover Analysis Procedure To Estimate Seismic Demands For Buildings: Theory And Preliminary Evaluation, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The principal objective of this investigation is to develop a pushover analysis procedure based on structural dynamics theory, which retains the conceptual simplicity and computational attractiveness of current procedures with invariant force distribution, but provides superior accuracy in estimating seismic demands on buildings.

The standard response spectrum analysis (RSA) for elastic buildings is reformulated as a Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA). The peak response of the elastic structure due to its nth vibration mode can be exactly determined by pushover analysis of the structure subjected to lateral forces distributed over the height of the building according to s*n = …

Concrete Roughness Characterization Using Laser Profilometry For Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Sheet Application, Norbert H. Maerz, Poornima Chepur, John J. Myers, Justin Linz Jan 2001

Concrete Roughness Characterization Using Laser Profilometry For Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Sheet Application, Norbert H. Maerz, Poornima Chepur, John J. Myers, Justin Linz

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The failure of a reinforced concrete member strengthened with fiberreinforced polymer (FRP) laminates may be caused by crushing of concrete, rupture of FRP laminates, or delamination of the FRP sheet. Therefore, the effectiveness and failure mode of FRP sheets applied to beams and columns is related to the degree of adhesion of the epoxy to the concrete surface. When a peeling or delamination failure can be avoided, a more effective engagement of the FRP sheet occurs, which results in more efficient use of the material. One of the principal factors affecting the bond behavior between the concrete and epoxy is …

Enhanced Biodegradation Of Hydrocarbon Contaminants Using Photocatalytic Pretreatment, Chad E. Green, Anita Stansberry, Jeff Sczechowski, Yarrow Nelson

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Photocatalysis was investigated as a pretreatment for hydrocarbon groundwater contamination at an abandoned oil field in Guadalupe, CA. A laboratory photoreactor, with a UV fluorescent lamp submerged in a suspension of TiO2 catalyst particles, was used to determine oxidation rates and the increase in biodegradability of the hydrocarbon mixture. Chemical oxidation demand (COD) and 5-day biological oxygen demand (BOD5) were measured as a function of exposure time using standard methods. During eight-hour photoreactor runs in a nitrogen atmosphere, the COD of diluent solutions in de-ionized water and diluent solutions in simulated groundwater both decreased by approximately 50%, …
