Test Fill To Determinate The Compression Behavior Of A Closed Industrial Waste Landfill 10.07, Wayne R. Bergstrom, Patrick Dugan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A test fill was constructed over a closed, industrial waste landfill located in southeastern Michigan. The objective of this test fill was to evaluate the immediate and time-dependent response of the existing landfill to an increase in load. The closed landfill contains a widely varying mixture of non-hazardous industrial wastes such as foundry sand, ash, and wastewater treatment sludge. It also contains construction and demolition debris. The surface of the landfill is relatively flat and, at the site of the test fill, is underlain by approximately 30 feet (9.1 m) of waste, some 15 feet (4.6 m) of which is …

Geotechnical And Geologic Features Of U.S. 189 In Provo Canyon, Utah, Thomas S. Lee, Steven H. Brandon

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Provo Canyon, located in north central Utah, is known to have landslide hazards for many years. Construction to widen and straighten a 2.5-mile-long section of U.S. 189 known as the “Narrows” commenced in December 1995. This project consists of twin 300-foot-long two-lane tunnels, 3/4 million cubic yards of soil and rock excavation, 60,000 square feet of cast-in-place concrete soil nailed walls, and 90,790 square feet of mechanically stabilized embankment. During excavation for some of the cuts, landslides occurred that required remediation. Cracks were noticed near the northern portal of the tunnels which necessitated immediate stabilization. Observations during construction are presented. …

Investigation Of The Influence Of The Clay Seams Around An Underground Excavation In Rock Salt, S. Kwon, John W. Wilson Mar 1998

Investigation Of The Influence Of The Clay Seams Around An Underground Excavation In Rock Salt, S. Kwon, John W. Wilson

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The presence of clay seams in the roof is especially important for assessing the stability of the excavations in salt and potash mines, since they allow separation as well as horizontal slip. The deformational behavior at clay seams in the roof of excavations was investigated by using actual field measurements made at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WlPP) site. From the in situ deformation measurements, the separation and separation rate across the clay seams in the roof and floor could be estimated by using the technique developed in this study. The horizontal displacement along the clay seams was determined from …

Individually and collectively, these earthquakes have served as scientific laboratories to show …

Case Histories For Settlement Analysis In Ground Improved By Vertical Drain, Takaharu Shogaki, Hayato Moro, Minoru Matsuo Mar 1998

Case Histories For Settlement Analysis In Ground Improved By Vertical Drain, Takaharu Shogaki, Hayato Moro, Minoru Matsuo

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The effects of anisotropy and sample disturbance on the consolidation parameters were investigated through laboratory testing, and the degree of sample disturbance on the consolidation parameters in the periphery of the drain is evaluated. A new method for settlement analysis, taking into consideration both sample disturbance and the retardation of the consolidation in the ground improved by vertical drain, is proposed. The effects of anisotropy and sample disturbance on the consolidation parameters in the ground improved by vertical drain are given as the function of the distance from the boundary of drain. In the undisturbed zone, the ratio of the …

Geotechnical Risk And Reliability From Theory To Practice, Lenka S. Timiovska Mar 1998

Geotechnical Risk And Reliability From Theory To Practice, Lenka S. Timiovska

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Indeterminate combined with evaluating the safety of existing lifeline systems are, large and here one would expect format risk and reliability techniques to have found their most urgent need. Besides, risk analysis has languished in safety practice, is only now beginning to appear in established safety programs in my country. It is of interest to explore the reasons why this has been so, and to point the way to the adaptations that are necessary if risk analysis is to assume its deserved role in life-line systems and related areas of geotechnical practice. This paper has proposed that geotechnical conditions are …

Identification Of Potential Seepage Locations Along The Herbert Hoover Dike, Lake Okeechobee Fl., By Electromagnetic Geophysical Method. Prediction And Confirmation., Anthony L. Dipiero, Robert Ross, Samuel R. Honeycutt, Richard D. Lewis

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This case history demonstrates the use of electromagnetic (EM) induction methods to examine known seepage locations and then predict future ones along the Herbert Hoover Dike (HHD) in south central Florida. The HHD forms an embankment dam 20 to 30 feet high and 140 miles long surrounding Lake Okeechobee. Approximately 26 miles of embankment was surveyed with EM induction. The objective of the EM survey was to identify active and potential foundation seepage locations and conduits. Areas of greater conductivity were often associated with seepage locations observed during a record high water event in October, 1995. These problems included boils …

Procedure To Predict Settlement Of Solid Waste Landfills Using Power Creep Law, Sanjeev Kumar Mar 1998

Procedure To Predict Settlement Of Solid Waste Landfills Using Power Creep Law, Sanjeev Kumar

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Settlement prediction of solid waste landfills is important for their post-closure operation. Estimation of settlement of refuse is complex because of the mechanism of settlement and heterogeneity of the refuse. Several methods are available to predict the settlement of solid waste landfills. Based on the analysis of published measured data of four landfills, a unique relationship was recently developed between reference compressibility and rate of compression to predict refuse settlement using Power Creep Law. A step-by-step procedure is proposed to predict refuse settlement by using the Power Creep Law at a site for which the data from laboratory or field …

Measurement And Analysis Of Civil Engineering Vibrations, Jean-Lou Chameau, Glenn J. Rix, Laurel Empie Mar 1998

Measurement And Analysis Of Civil Engineering Vibrations, Jean-Lou Chameau, Glenn J. Rix, Laurel Empie

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Man-made vibrations caused by construction activities, blasting, rail and vehicular traffic, and machinery can have an adverse impact on buildings and facilities, human occupants of buildings, and sensitive equipment housed within these facilities. Comparisons between vibrations are often difficult because of different methods used to measure, analyze, and interpret vibration data. To facilitate these comparisons, standard methods of selecting and mounting transducers, processing vibration data, and interpreting test results are reviewed. Specific measurement and analysis techniques and maximum allowable vibration criteria used for evaluating the influence of vibrations on humans, the potential for cosmetic damage to structures, and the impact …

Design And Construction Of The Seattle Symphony's Benaroya Hall Above An Old Railroad Tunnel, Carole L. B. Mitchell Mar 1998

Design And Construction Of The Seattle Symphony's Benaroya Hall Above An Old Railroad Tunnel, Carole L. B. Mitchell

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Benaroya Hall, the new home of the Seattle Symphony, is located directly over an old railroad tunnel in downtown Seattle. The railroad tunnel was hand excavated in the early 1900s; the tunnel excavation caused considerable settlement of the buildings and streets above. The tunneling disturbance and subsequent rotting of timber supports resulted in numerous voids in the vicinity of the tunnel. Excavation for the Benaroya Hall removed up to 55 feet of soil overburden and came to within 12 feet of the tunnel crown. The foundations for the symphony hall were required to protect the railroad tunnel from carrying symphony …

A Follow-Up Of Two Different Foundation Principles, Sven Hansbo, Leif Jendeby

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In a special lecture held by the senior author at the Int. Conf. on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering in St. Louis (Hansbo, 1984) a follow-up was presented of the observations on two nearby buildings founded on deep deposits of soft clay according to different foundation principles. In one case the total load of the building is carried by friction piles with a factor of safety against failure equal to 3 while, in the other case, the load is partly carried by contact pressure at the raft/soil interface and partly by friction piles with a design load equal to creep …

Heavy Crane Foundations On Soft Clay, John R. Davie, Kenneth R. Bell, Mark B. Fitzsimmons, Daniel A. Haggerty Mar 1998

Heavy Crane Foundations On Soft Clay, John R. Davie, Kenneth R. Bell, Mark B. Fitzsimmons, Daniel A. Haggerty

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A very large mobile crane was used to lift a 3,150 kN steam generator through the roof of the containment building of a nuclear power plant. The maximum load on the crane was 19.8 MN, giving a track pressure of almost 600 kPa. Soil conditions were stiff clay underlain by softer clay. This paper describes the bearing capacity and settlement analysis performed to establish a suitable shallow foundation for the crane. The foundation load test confirmed that soil conditions had been adequately defined and that the foundation design was satisfactory.

Shallow Foundations On A Diagenetic Limestone Formation In Qatar, W. Akili, Robert M. Jackson Mar 1998

Shallow Foundations On A Diagenetic Limestone Formation In Qatar, W. Akili, Robert M. Jackson

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The near surface limestones in Qatar have complex lithologies and have experienced diagenetic changes after deposition. A variety of weak limestones have been encountered in combination with matrix material (rock fragments and secondary fraction). The matrix, often clayey, sometimes cemented with gypsum, anhydrite or calcite grains, is not a rock nor does it qualify as a soil. These materials are: (i) difficult to sample in the undisturbed state. (ii) extremely variable m composition and proprieties, and (iii) appear susceptible to degradation, particularly when wet. This paper presents geotechnical information from selected sites where these materials (diagenetic limestone) have been encountered. …
