Design And Fabrication Of A Full-Featured Labscale Hybrid Rocket Engine, Kyle Platt Jan 2006

Design And Fabrication Of A Full-Featured Labscale Hybrid Rocket Engine, Kyle Platt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The design, development, integration and testing of a full-featured, Lab-Scale Hybrid Rocket Engine was not only envisioned to be the chosen method of putting student payloads into space, but to be an invaluable teaching resource. The subject of the present thesis is the analysis, design, development, integration and demonstration of a lab-scale hybrid rocket motor. The overarching goal of this project was to establish a working developmental lab model from which further research can be accomplished. The lab model was specifically designed to use a fuel source that could be studied in normal laboratory conditions. As such, the rocket engine …

Additive Lithography Fabrication And Integration Of Micro Optics, Mahesh Pitchumani Jan 2006

Additive Lithography Fabrication And Integration Of Micro Optics, Mahesh Pitchumani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Optical elements are the fundamental components in photonic systems and are used to transform an input optical beam into a desired beam profile or to couple the input beam into waveguides, fibers, or other optical systems or devices. Macroscopic optical elements are easily fabricated using grinding and polishing techniques, but few methods exist for inexpensive fabrication of micro optical elements. In this work we present an innovative technique termed Additive Lithography that makes use of binary masks and controlled partial exposures to sculpt photoresist into the desired optical surface relief profile. We explore various masking schemes for fabricating a variety …

Up-Conversion In Rare-Earth Doped Micro-Particles Applied To New Emissive 2d Dislays, Anne Milliez Jan 2006

Up-Conversion In Rare-Earth Doped Micro-Particles Applied To New Emissive 2d Dislays, Anne Milliez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Up-conversion (UC) in rare-earth co-doped fluorides to convert diode laser light in the near infrared to red, green and blue visible light is applied to make possible high performance emissive displays. The infrared-to-visible UC in the materials we study is a sequential form of non-linear two photon absorption in which a strong absorbing constituent absorbs two low energy photons and transfers this energy to another constituent which emits visible light. Some of the UC emitters' most appealing characteristics for displays are: a wide color gamut with very saturated colors, very high brightness operation without damage to the emitters, long lifetimes …

Substituting Live Training With Virtual Training By Means Of A Commercial Off The Shelf, First Person Shooter Computer Game And The Effect On Performance, George Kneuper Ii Jan 2006

Substituting Live Training With Virtual Training By Means Of A Commercial Off The Shelf, First Person Shooter Computer Game And The Effect On Performance, George Kneuper Ii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research measures the change in Army ROTC cadets' tactical performance when up to 75% of their tactical live training is replaced with training done on a computer. An ROTC instructor from any of the 270 programs across the nation can take this research and implement a training plan utilizing a relatively cheap off the shelf computer game and save their program: cadet and cadre time, training dollars, and transportation/equipment/training area resources, while seeing no degradation in their cadets' performance. Little research has been done on the effect of replacing live simulation with virtual simulation. With this in mind, six …

In-Situ Ammonia Removal Of Leachate From Bioreactor Landfills, Nicole Berge Jan 2006

In-Situ Ammonia Removal Of Leachate From Bioreactor Landfills, Nicole Berge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A new and promising trend in solid waste management is to operate the landfill as a bioreactor. Bioreactor landfills are controlled systems in which moisture addition and/or air injection are used as enhancements to create a solid waste environment capable of actively degrading the biodegradable organic fraction of the waste. Although there are many advantages associated with bioreactor landfills, some challenges remain. One such challenge is the ammonia-nitrogen concentration found in the leachate. The concentrations of ammonia-nitrogen tend to increase beyond concentrations found in leachate from conventional landfills because recirculating leachate increases the rate of ammonification and results in accumulation …

Algorithms For Haplotype Inference And Block Partitioning, Satya Ravi Vijaya Jan 2006

Algorithms For Haplotype Inference And Block Partitioning, Satya Ravi Vijaya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The completion of the human genome project in 2003 paved the way for studies to better understand and catalog variation in the human genome. The International HapMap Project was started in 2002 with the aim of identifying genetic variation in the human genome and studying the distribution of genetic variation across populations of individuals. The information collected by the HapMap project will enable researchers in associating genetic variations with phenotypic variations. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are loci in the genome where two individuals differ in a single base. It is estimated that there are approximately ten million SNPs in the …

Synthesis Of Self-Resetting Stage Logic Pipelines, Rashad Oreifej Jan 2006

Synthesis Of Self-Resetting Stage Logic Pipelines, Rashad Oreifej

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As designers began to pack multi-million transistors onto a single chip, their reliance on a global clocking signal to orchestrate the operations of the chip has started to face almost insurmountable difficulties. As a result, designers started to explore clockless circuits to avoid the global clocking problem. Recently, self-resetting circuits implemented in dynamic logic families have been proposed as viable clockless alternatives. While these circuits can produce excellent performances, they display serious limitations in terms of area cost and power consumption. A middle-of-the-road alternative, which can provide a good performance and avoid the limitations seen in dynamic self-resetting circuits, would …

Object Association Across Multiple Moving Cameras In Planar Scenes, Yaser Sheikh Jan 2006

Object Association Across Multiple Moving Cameras In Planar Scenes, Yaser Sheikh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we address the problem of object detection and object association across multiple cameras over large areas that are well modeled by planes. We present a unifying probabilistic framework that captures the underlying geometry of planar scenes, and present algorithms to estimate geometric relationships between different cameras, which are subsequently used for co-operative association of objects. We first present a local1 object detection scheme that has three fundamental innovations over existing approaches. First, the model of the intensities of image pixels as independent random variables is challenged and it is asserted that useful correlation exists in intensities of …

Bench Scale Analysis Of Experimental Fouling-Resistent Low Pressure Reverse Osmosis Membranes Using High Organic Surface Water And Synthetic Colloidal Water, Matthew Doan Jan 2006

Bench Scale Analysis Of Experimental Fouling-Resistent Low Pressure Reverse Osmosis Membranes Using High Organic Surface Water And Synthetic Colloidal Water, Matthew Doan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of membrane treatment for the production of potable water has become more prevalent in today's industry. As drinking water regulations become more stringent this trend is expected to continue. Widespread use is also a result of membrane treatment being the best available treatment in many cases. While membrane treatment is a proven technology that can produce a consistently superior product to conventional treatment methods, membrane fouling and concentrate disposal are issues that drive up the cost of membrane treatment and can effectively eliminate it from consideration as a treatment alternative. This research focused on membrane fouling. A series …
