Characterization Of Tisi2 Process And Electrical Properties, Laurel E. Haydock
Characterization Of Tisi2 Process And Electrical Properties, Laurel E. Haydock
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
The goal of this experimentation consists of the formation of TiSi2 and demonstration of its electrical properties. The successful formation of a TiSiproduct was be confirmed by scanning electron micrograph (SEM) images, Rutherford Backscatter Spectroscopy (RBS) data, and electrical characterization. Following an annealing heat treatment, the RBS data indicated the presence of a Si substrate, a film that compositionally appears to be TiSi2, and a surface layer of TiO2. The electrical testing indicates the presence of ohmic behavior, and the resistance is strongly dependant on the furnace annealing and rapid thermal processing (RTP) treatments.
Design And Manufacturing Of Silicon Pin Diodes Utilizing Silicon On Insulator Technology, Patrick Warner
Design And Manufacturing Of Silicon Pin Diodes Utilizing Silicon On Insulator Technology, Patrick Warner
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
The goal of this project was to design a process to form a PIN structure on silicon on insulator (SOl) wafers, IBIS donated the wafers for this project. Using a combination of standard and novel wafer processing techniques allowed for successful completion of the device. These techniques involved a four-layer mask process that utilized both state of the art and older tool sets. A methodology for lithographic processing of wafer pieces has been expanded upon and documented for future use.
Testing demonstrated resistor like behavior opposed to the expected diode behavior. This result is indicative of a short through the …
Implementation Of A J-Ramp Test Process To Examine The Reliability Of Dielectric Films, William Simpson
Implementation Of A J-Ramp Test Process To Examine The Reliability Of Dielectric Films, William Simpson
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
As film thicknesses get smaller and smaller it is important to maintain high quality dielectric films. A J-ramp test is a method for extracting the characteristics of dielectric films breakdown. Two important parameters that can be extracted using a i-ramp test are the maximum electric field and the charge to breakdown (QBD) of the dielectric. The charge to breakdown the dielectric is a very important parameter because it will be significantly affected by moderate changes within a dielectric. Historically, this parameter would be obtained through stress tests, using a single current level measurement that may take hours or even days. …
Development Of A Polysilicon Check Microvalve, William C. Hart
Development Of A Polysilicon Check Microvalve, William C. Hart
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
Check valves are used frequently within the field of microfluidic MEMS, particularly in micropump applications. Check valves serve to limit the flow of a fluid to one direction through a channel. This project was an attempt to manufacture an efficient check microvalve using polysilicon as the valve cover material. Previous work on a microvalve at RIT has been unsuccessful, as the final KOH etch has attacked the polysilicon, thus removing the valves from the openings in the silicon. It was determined that pinholes in the LPCVD nitride were allowing KOH to penetrate the etch mask and attack the substrate surface …
Development Of Macroporous Silicon For Bio-Chemical Sensing Applications, Tiffany M. Hoover
Development Of Macroporous Silicon For Bio-Chemical Sensing Applications, Tiffany M. Hoover
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
Macroporous silicon bio-chemical sensing devices have been developed, fabricated and tested. The porous silicon walls were lined with oxide and aluminum electrodes were placed on either side of the porous silicon membrane. These electrodes were used to measure capacitive changes resulting from vapor/fluidic interactions with the oxide-coated porous silicon membrane.
For thick flow-through membrane formation, the maximum etch time investigated during the porous silicon-forming anodization process, using an electrolyte consisting of hydrofluoric acid and dimethylformamide was an 8 hour period with an electrolyte refresh halfway through the process. The pore dimensions measured after this process were approximately 67 μm …

Mems Based Light Modulator, Shushil Shakya
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
This paper presents a simple way to build a MEMS based light modulator. Here Aluminum ribbons are suspended in an air gap. An array of these Al ribbons can be used to act as a light modulator. Alternate Al ribbons are connected to a DC bias of 50V which will curve downwards due to the stress applied and electrostatic attraction. Thus, the light intensity can be modulated to any shade of gray needed or even turn it off completely. Different sizes of light modulators were built using Mentor Graphics and were fabricated in the RIT, SMFL. Final results did not …

Use Of Calcium Hypochlorite As A Sanitizer For Seeds Used For Sprouting: Task #2; Impact: Improved Alfalfa Decontamination Technologies, Emily Damron, Carrie Klein, Melissa Leach, Jordan Mourot, Tom Murphy, Amy Seamans, Ryan Wilson
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Consumption of raw or lightly cooked alfalfa sprouts has been a concern of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in recent years due to connections between sprouts and foodborne illnesses. Researchers have identified, contaminated seeds as the primary source of alfalfa sprouts contamination. Contamination of alfalfa seeds can originate in the field, harvesting, storing, or sprouting. Two pathogens of particular concern on alfalfa seeds are Escherichia coli 0157:H7 (E. coli) and Salmonella. These pathogens are capable of producing biofilms that provide protection for individual cells and allow for survival in otherwise hostile environments, including some disinfectant washes. Other factors …
Optimal Spacings For Two Common Landscape Irrigation Sprinklers, Kody L. Karschnik
Optimal Spacings For Two Common Landscape Irrigation Sprinklers, Kody L. Karschnik
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
A simple irrigation system providing sufficient watering needed to make a plant grow is not very difficult. However, to set up a system which provides uniform distribution of water is more difficult. Uniformity coefficients such as Distribution Uniformity and Christiansen coefficient of Uniformity can be used to compare systems and layouts. After measuring the distribution of water from a single sprinkler, a densogram is created with software. The densogram is a numerical and graphical representation of the overlap pattern that the sprinklers create on a given area of surface that is being irrigated. By varying the distance between the sprinklers …

Sigma-Delta Voltage To Frequency Converter With Phase Modulation Possibility, Milan Stork
Sigma-Delta Voltage To Frequency Converter With Phase Modulation Possibility, Milan Stork
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Voltage to frequency converter (VFC) is an oscillator whose frequency is linearly proportional to control voltage. There are two common VFC architectures: the current steering multivibrator and the charge-balance VFC. For higher linearity, the charge-balancing method is preferred. The charge balanced VFC may be made in asynchronous or synchronous (clocked) forms. The synchronous charge balanced VFC or "sigma delta" (\Sigma-\Delta) VFC is used when output pulses are synchronized to a clock. The charge balance VFC is more complex, more demanding in its supply voltage and current requirements, and more accurate. It is capable of 16 to18 bit linearity. In this …

Design, Simulation And Tests Of A Low-Cost Microstrip Patch Antenna Arrays For The Wireless Communication, Gonca Çakir, Levent Sevgi̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Typical low-cost, low-weight microstrip base station antenna arrays with beam-scanning capabilities are taken into account. In downtowns of large cities like New York, Chicago, and in historical cities like Istanbul, where high buildings are separated by narrow but densely occupied streets, antenna arrays with approximately 20°-35° beam-widths are required to complete the cellular communication coverage. To meet this requirement, new antenna arrays are designed with 35° beam-widths and 60° electronic scanning capabilities. Their characteristics are investigated both numerically and experimentally. An FDTD-based antenna simulation package (M-PATCH) is prepared, tested on canonical structures and against the literature first, for verification and …

Computation Of Association Probabilities For Single Target Tracking With The Use Of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, İlke Türkmen, Keri̇m Güney
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a simple method based on the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is presented for computing the association probabilities. The computed association probabilities are used to track the single manoeuvring target in the cluttered environment. A hybrid learning algorithm, which combines the least square method and the backpropagation algorithm, is used to identify the parameters of ANFIS. The tracks estimated by using the method proposed in this study are in very good agreement with the true tracks. Better accuracy with respect to the well known nearest neighbour Kalman filter and probabilistic data association algorithms is obtained.

Soft Computing Methods In Microwave Active Device Modeling, Yavuz Cengi̇z, Fi̇li̇z Güneş, Mehmet Fati̇h Çağlar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this work, the signal and noise behaviors of a microwave transistor within its operation domain (CT,V_{DS}, I_{DS}, f) are modeled by the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) without using any information on the microwave circuit theory . A worked example is presented where the same data is employed for both models selected from the manufacturer's data sheets. Performances of the FLS and ANN models are compared and conclusions are drawn.
Impacts Of Distributed Generators On The Oscillatory Stability Of Interconnected Power Systems, İstemi̇han Genç, Ömer Usta
Impacts Of Distributed Generators On The Oscillatory Stability Of Interconnected Power Systems, İstemi̇han Genç, Ömer Usta
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Integration of distributed generation is continually and gradually affecting the stability of interconnected power systems. In this paper, the impacts of distributed synchronous generators on oscillatory stability are studied. In various parameter sub-spaces of interest, feasibility regions can be calculated to determine the conditions to sustain the stable operation of an interconnected power system. Through computations of the feasibility boundaries corresponding to Hopf bifurcations of electromechanical oscillatory modes, we determine the operating limits for a stable operation of the system under small and continual disturbances such as predictable changes in loading conditions of generators. Thus, with the case studies given …
Fault Tolerant Control With Re-Configuring Sliding-Mode Schemes, Ufuk Demi̇rci̇, Feza Kerestecioğlu
Fault Tolerant Control With Re-Configuring Sliding-Mode Schemes, Ufuk Demi̇rci̇, Feza Kerestecioğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a controller design method for linear MIMO systems is presented which a sliding mode controller is reconfigured in case of system faults. Faults are detected with the residual vector generated from a standard linear observer. Once a fault has been detected the fault distribution matrix can be obtained and used to update the corrective or equivalent control parts of the sliding mode controller. As a result, fault tolerant adaptive controllers keep the system performance within acceptable limits or at least avoids the system to wind-up.

Turbo Codes: The Issue Of Average Union Upper Bound Under Imperfect Channel State Information In Rayleigh Fading Channels, Erhan A. İnce, Syed Amjad Ali
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The potential of turbo codes to demonstrate excellent performance in the region of low signal to noise ratio is now a familiar fact. The idea of turbo codes was first introduced by Berrou and was based on the clever utilization of the existing decoding mechanism of BCJR with a change in the encoder by introducing feedback and an interleaver in the overall scheme. Since then, these powerful forward error correcting codes have attained a significant attention and have either replaced or have become a sturdy candidate for many applications in this era of modern communication systems. So far, a lot …

Two-Variable Scattering Formulas To Describe Some Classes Of Lossles Two-Ports With Mixed, Lumped Elements And Commensurate Stubs, Ahmet Sertbaş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Using the semi-analytic method based on the construction of two-variable scattering functions, which describe lossless two-ports with two kinds of elements, for some classes of ladder networks formed with lumped elements and commensurate stubs, the explicit descriptive formulas are produced up to six mixed-elements. To exhibit the efficiency of the explicit descriptive equations in the design of the broadband microwave circuits, a single matching design problem (UHF antenna matching) is solved by using the obtained two-variable scattering formulas.

A Content-Based Fuzzy Image Database Based On The Fuzzy Artmap Architecture, M. Uysal, Fatoş Tünay Yarman Vural
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A major design issue in content-based image retrieval system is the selection of the feature set. This study attacks the problem of finding a discriminative feature for each class, which is optimal in some sense. Fuzzy ARTMAP architecture is used to find this discriminative feature set. For this purpose, initially, a large variety of features are extracted from the regions of the pre-segmented images. Then, the feature set of each object class is learned using the Fuzzy Art Map Architecture, by identifying the weights of each feature for each object class. In the querying phase, trained set of feature weights …
Color Image Profiling Using Fuzzy Sets, Amine Ait Younes, Isis Truck, Herman Akdag
Color Image Profiling Using Fuzzy Sets, Amine Ait Younes, Isis Truck, Herman Akdag
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this article, a software for image indexing and retrieval is presented. The classification proposed here is based on the dominant color(s) of the images. The process consists in assigning a colorimetric profile to the image in HLS space (Hue, Lightness, Saturation). First, the definition of hue is done thanks to a fuzzy representation to take into account the non-uniformity of colors distribution. And then, lightness and saturation are represented through linguistic qualifiers also defined in a fuzzy way. Finally, the profile is built through fuzzy functions representing the membership degree of the image to different classes. In order to …

Information View Of Organization, Bob Travica
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This article proposes an information view of organization that brings the information systems field closer to organization theory. Although voluminous bodies of literature have been developed within each of these disciplines and links between them do exist, their mutual informing is still insufficient. The proposed view of organization is intended to help convey results of information systems research to organizational scholars, while broadening theoretical horizons of the former. This article discusses the premises, conceptual framework, examples, and preliminary evidence of the information view of organization.

Temporal document retrieval takes into account the time context expressed as temporal phrases in the document content. The maintenance and scalability of the proposed data cluster is discussed. The results of temporal document retrieval experiments based on typical and ad-hoc time constraints, performed on a large corpus of business news are reported. The experiments showed that the instantaneous TDRM-based retrieval using the proposed cluster is possible with the currently available database technology and confirmed …
A Framework For Describing And Classifying Multicriteria Portfolio Selection Problems: An Object-Oriented Approach, Heinz Roland Weistroffer, Charles H. Smith
A Framework For Describing And Classifying Multicriteria Portfolio Selection Problems: An Object-Oriented Approach, Heinz Roland Weistroffer, Charles H. Smith
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Many decisions require not a single solution alternative, but a set or portfolio of alternatives. For example, a business generally produces not a single product, but a portfolio of products, and a project is tackled not by a single individual, but by a team of individuals. Unfortunately, the portfolio selection problem has been largely neglected in the literature. Though many specific problem environments have been discussed using heuristic, ad hoc methods, no general methodology or theory has been developed. This paper proposes an object-oriented framework to provide a theoretical foundation for future research on the portfolio selection problem.
Uml Activity Diagram Semantics And Automated Gui Prototyping, Nancy Winniford Ashley, Timothy E. Meehan, Norman Carr
Uml Activity Diagram Semantics And Automated Gui Prototyping, Nancy Winniford Ashley, Timothy E. Meehan, Norman Carr
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Extended Activity Semantics (XAS) is a notation which can be used with Unified Modeling Language (UML) activity diagrams to specify user interactions with a system and to automatically generate a prototype of the graphical user interface (GUI) that would be used in these interactions. XAS has been incorporated in a CASE tool, Guibot, which has been developed as a plug-in for Rational Rose, a leading UML tool. The notation and tool address a specific gap in UML – the inability to model user interaction.

Internet Technology In 2010: The Issue Of Ipv6 Adoption In The U.S.A., Garry L. White, Jaymeen R. Shah, James R. Cook
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Computer industry literature suggests that IPv4 Internet addresses are likely to have been depleted by the year 2010, and at least Asia and Europe will be using the new IPv6 Internet addresses. Literature also suggests that the U.S.A. is lagging behind Asia and Europe with the implementation of IPv6. Empirical data supporting the fact that the U.S.A. is lagging behind is not available in the literature. This paper presents the issues regarding IPv6, reasons why Asia and Europe are implementing IPv6, and why the U.S.A. is lagging behind. Empirical data is presented to support the literature’s suggestion that the U.S.A. …
