An Improved Estimation Of Passive Wrist Stiffness Using Various Techniques, Will Drake, Dr. Steven Charles Jun 2013

An Improved Estimation Of Passive Wrist Stiffness Using Various Techniques, Will Drake, Dr. Steven Charles

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The wrist plays a vital yet frequently overlooked role in positioning and supporting the hand during activities of daily living. Particularly during low-level activities (such as typing), passive joint stiffness dominates wrist dynamics and constitutes the main obstacle to motion. In spite of its importance, however, little consensus exists as to the exact range of passive wrist stiffness. Reported values vary from as little as 0.002 Nm/rad (Lehman & Calhoun, 1991) to as many as 9.0 Nm/rad (Crisco et al, 2010), a span of three orders of magnitude! The purpose of this research is to determine an approximate single-order-of-magnitude range …

Stand-Alone Lance For Nanoinjection Of Dna, Mark Fernelius, Dr. Larry Howell Jun 2013

Stand-Alone Lance For Nanoinjection Of Dna, Mark Fernelius, Dr. Larry Howell

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Technologies for injecting DNA into egg cells have greatly facilitated genetic research. Microinjection is a current standard for this purpose. It uses a hollow glass needle to inject a solution containing DNA into cells. Although widely used, microinjection has several significant challenges. First, the DNA can be damaged when forced through the small opening of the needle. Second, the cell can die from the physical trauma caused by the microinjection needle piercing the cell membrane. Third, the cell can split open because of the increased internal pressure caused by injecting fluid into the cell. Brigham Young University has developed nanoinjection …

Suburban Sustainability

Sidewalks are a critical part of sustainable transportation systems, supporting pedestrian travel and healthy physical activity. Presence and quality of sidewalks is a significant predictor of perceived safety and quality of the pedestrian environment. Lack of adequate pedestrian infrastructure data has been identified as a major barrier to large-scale pedestrian planning. Sidewalk presence, width, and surface condition are identified as important indicators of facility quality and accessibility. Georgia Tech is deploying an Android tablet application to automatically generate spatial sidewalk inventories, automatically assess sidewalk quality, and prioritize sidewalk repairs. The research team has collected field data on sidewalk segments across …

The Experimental Study On Local Scour Around A Circular Pipe Undergoing Vortex-Induced Vibration In Steady Flow, Bing Yang, Tao Yang, Jian-Lin Ma, Jin-Sheng Cui

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The local scour around a circular pipe undergoing vortexinduced vibration is investigated experimentally in a water flume. The typical characteristic of local scour is analyzed in detail. The influences of initial gap-to-diameter ratio (e0/D), the mode of pipe vibration and the sand type on the local scour are discussed. Experimental results indicate that there exists strong intensity of scour when the pipe moves close to the surface of the sandy bed. The vibration of the pipe results in the rapid development of sandy bed’s scouring. With the increase of gap-to-diameter ratio the distance between the center of the pipe and …

Shape Optimization Of Multi-Chamber Side Inlet/Outlet Mufflers Hybridized With Multiple Perforated Intruding Tubes Using A Genetic Algorithm, Min-Chie Chiu, Ying-Chun Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The use of perforated-tube side mufflers for depressing venting noise within a constrained space has been prevalent in modern industries. Also, research on mufflers equipped with side inlets/outlets has been thoroughly documented. However, research on shape optimization of side inlet/outlet mufflers hybridized with multiple open-ended perforated intruding tubes which may enhance acoustic performance has gone unnoticed. Therefore, we wish to not only analyze the sound transmission loss (STL) of side inlet/outlet mufflers but also to optimize their best design shape within a limited space. In this paper, the generalized decoupling technique and the plane wave theory used in solving the …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An analytical and numerical comparison of great circle (GC) sailing, great elliptic (GE) sailing, and geodesic (Geod) sailing is presented. The comparison between GC and GE sailing addresses some problems whether the navigator and navigational software developers promptly have to use GE sailing or use hybrid sailing mixed with features of the GC sailing and GE sailing. This fact found here presents that the formulae tackling relationship of latitude and longitude of GC sailing also can be suited to the GE sailing except some calculation of GE sailing involving distance and course. The validity of effectiveness of proposed GE sailing …

The Variation Of Flexural Rigidity For Post-Tensioned Prestressed Concrete Beams, Ta-Heng Wang, Ran Huang, Tz-Wei Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The natural frequency of axial-loaded concrete beam decreases with increasing applied compressive force, and the natural frequency of tensioned cable increases with increasing tensile force. However, the variation of natural frequency of prestressed concrete beam (PCB) consisting of concrete and cable has rarely been discussed based on both |the rigorous mathematic model and experimental results. In this study, a testing program was conducted and Rayleigh's method was used to derive an approximate equation for computing natural frequency. The results indicate that (1) the natural frequency decreases with increasing prestressing force for PCB with eccentric parabolic tendon, but it is no …

A Piston-Type Porous Wave Energy Converter Theory, Ching-Yun Yueh, Shih-Hsuan Chuang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study investigates the performance of a piston-type porous wave energy converter (PTPWEC), which consists of a solid wall, a vertical porous plate, a transmission bar, a rigid block constrained by rollers, a spring, and a damper. The PTPWEC is subjected to dynamic external loading by wave actions. To simulate this dynamic system, a mathematical model is used with a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. Linear wave theory governs the entire fluid domain, which is divided into two regions by the vertical porous plate. Darcy's law is applied to flow through the porous plate. Finally, this investigation employs an eigenfunction expansion to …

Design Optimization Of A Submerged Vane With Streamlined Profile For Sediment Management In Rivers, Huei-Tau Ouyang, Jihn-Sung Lai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The design of the submerged vane, a flow training structure for sediment management in rivers, is optimized using a Genetic Algorithm. The vane considered in this study has a foil-like sectional profile and a tapered outline. The sectional profile of the vane is based on two types of shape formulations: (1) NACA’s four-digit wing profiles, and (2) profiles comprising two Bezier splines. By using Elitist and Crowding factor models, the optimization proceeds by creating successively improved generations of vanes. The final design for the vane with NACA profile has higher lift yet larger drag. Conversely, the final design for the …

Cooking Up The Optimal Baking Algorithm, Tony Burand, Michael Tetzlaff, Jacob Smith May 2013

Cooking Up The Optimal Baking Algorithm, Tony Burand, Michael Tetzlaff, Jacob Smith

Colloquy Undergraduate Research Journal

Many conventional rectangular baking pans have a problem in that they bake the corners of the batter faster than the rest of the pan. Circular baking pans eliminate this problem, but take up more space in the oven. We propose a solution that given weights for baking consistency and space efficiency based on the importance of each will provide the optimal baking pan shape. We have come up with an algorithm for sorting the pans of area A effectively and formed a model that describes the heat flow into the pan as well as the baking mix itself. The model …
