An Analysis For The Blade Coating Of Ctbn Modified Epoxy Adhesive, Jeng-Li Liang May 1983

An Analysis For The Blade Coating Of Ctbn Modified Epoxy Adhesive, Jeng-Li Liang

Theses

A resin metering criterion has been developed for processing the prepregs of CTBN-EPOXY resin in which the resin content can be controlled within close tolerances. This criterion was obtained by numerically simulating the flow of CTBN-EPDXY resin in the blade-type metering device at room temperature. The Newtonion case of CTBN-EPOXY resin was selected for the study to avoid dealing with more complicated flow equations. A methodology of using the penalty function/finite element formulation was developed to solve the steady state Navior-Stokes equation.

The rheological data show that the CTBN-EPOXY resin is a non-Newtonion fluid at low shear rate. On the …

A Parameter Identification System For The Human Visual Evoked Response, Robert Kalle Michaels May 1983

A Parameter Identification System For The Human Visual Evoked Response, Robert Kalle Michaels

Theses

The Human Visual Evoked Response (VER) provides a useful tool for analyzing an individual's visual system. However, mere inspection of the signal may not always be the best way to make a diagnosis of the patient. To aid in this diagnosis a parameter identification system has been developed which fits the response to an analog model. The development of the model was based on the results of a survey of previous work in the field. Data were acquired from a data acquisition/processing system developed at the New Jersey University of Medicine and Dentistry and the Eye Institute of New Jersey. …

Automated Instrumentation System For Studies Of Metabolic Rates In Rats, Suhas P. Pathak May 1983

Automated Instrumentation System For Studies Of Metabolic Rates In Rats, Suhas P. Pathak

Theses

The task of the instrumentation system is to measure the respiratory exchange in rats in a controlled experiment. Air is drawn at a predeter-mined rate in and out of rat chambers. The proportion of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the ensuing air indicates the respiratory rate of the rat. The entire operation is controlled by a microcomputer whose most important functions are: to direct the flow of air through the rat chambers by switching valves; and to collect data about the percentages of gases in question.

Thus with the help of a computer it is possible to monitor and control …

Criteria Measurement In Edp Auditing, Eugene Alexander Ottaviano May 1983

Criteria Measurement In Edp Auditing, Eugene Alexander Ottaviano

Theses

Criteria Measurement in EDP Auditing is a planning technique to assist the Internal Audit function in systematically selecting software applications for budgeted audit reviews. The objective is to develop a risk analysis method, which is not time and labor intensive, that will minimize risk to the corporation and maximize audit effectiveness. The methodology does not consider probabilities or occurrence rates because risks to the EDP environment are extremely difficult to forecast with traditional techniques. The method provides for both objective and subjective risk determinations.

The approach is to measure software risk criteria for a specific data processing environment. Risk concerns …

The Hydroxide-, Chymotrypsin-, And Blood-Catalyzed Hydrolysis Of A Series Of Sodium 4-Acyloxy-3-Nitrobenzene Sulfonates, Louis E. Rinaldi

Theses

The kinetics of the hydrolysis of a series of water-soluble aromatic esters (sodium 4-acyloxy-3-nitrobenzene sulfonates) were analyzed in order to determine the effect of a variety of substitutions (on the α-carbon of the acid group) upon the rate of reaction.

The following was observed. That (a), the hydroxide catalyzed and water dependent hydrolyses of these esters are slower for larger substituents and faster for smaller ones. That (b), the chymotrypsin catalytic hydrolysis of these esters shows an acylation reaction step which occurs at a rate greater than deacylation for larger substituents, and at approximately equal rates for smaller ones. Furthermore, …

Gallium Nitride Film Deposition By Ionized Cluster Beam Epitaxy, Ghulum Bakiri May 1983

Gallium Nitride Film Deposition By Ionized Cluster Beam Epitaxy, Ghulum Bakiri

Theses

An experimental Ionized Cluster Beam System similar in design to the one developed at Kyoto University in Japan was. designed and constructed in the Microelectronics Laboratory at NJIT. This involved making the working drawings, having the parts machined and then assembling the system in a vacuum system together with the necessary variable power supplies, meters, controls, gas inlets, cooling water connections, etc.

Eleven deposition runs were then attempted to grow gallium nitride utilizing the system constructed. In a typical deposition run, gallium was vaporized from a boron nitride crucible at 1000° C and allowed to expand through a 0.5 mm …

An Improvement In The Chemical Engineering Simulation System, Roman Andreyuk May 1983

An Improvement In The Chemical Engineering Simulation System, Roman Andreyuk

Theses

The accurate design of chemical processing plants is important to the chemical engineer. The original version of CHESS (Chemical Engineering Simulation System) greatly reduced the amount of time which previously had to be spent on the design of such plants by providing the engineer with a package which simulated some of the more common pieces of chemical processing equipment found in a typical chemical plant.

The present version of the Chemical Engineering Simulation System (CHESS2) presents a significant improvement over the original version. The improvement was achieved by expanding the thermodynamic package, offering the user a choice of methods by …

A Finite Difference Solution Of An Ideal, Normal, Impinging Jet, Luis A. Gast May 1983

A Finite Difference Solution Of An Ideal, Normal, Impinging Jet, Luis A. Gast

Theses

The free boundary of a circular jet of an irrotational, inviscid, incompressible, fluid impinging normally to a flat surface from a height of 2 times the nozzle radius, was found by a finite difference method.

Starting with a graphical solution, approximate values of the potential were given to the nodes at the field.

Having the equipotential lines perpendicular to the axis of the jet, perpendicular to the impinging surface, and having defined the value of the potential at both the entrance and exit of the jet, a finite difference expression of the Laplace's equation was used in an iteration scheme …

An Application Of Personal Microcomputer To Solve Mid-Sized Goal Programming Problems, Chanhon Joe Lu May 1983

An Application Of Personal Microcomputer To Solve Mid-Sized Goal Programming Problems, Chanhon Joe Lu

Theses

This thesis develops a microcomputer software to solve mid-sized goal programming problems utilizing the revised simplex method.

Goal programming is an extension of linear programming, but is more powerful and flexible than linear programming because of its capability in handling problems with multiple conflicting objectives, instead of dealing with "one dimensional" objective - profit maximization or cost minimization. Accordingly, goal programming is very useful to the complex organizational environments.

With the help of rapid and accurate computation of digital computers, solving a complex program is not a difficult task at all. However, some medium-sized companies cannot afford a mainframe -computer, …

Failure Surface For L-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Short Columns, Mon-Chen Liu

Theses

Combined bending and axial compression for L-shaped reinforced concrete short columns is a common problem. But the present ACI Building Code (ACI 318-77), handbooks and texbooks pay no attention to this problem. A numerical analysis and computer program developed by Hsu fora reinforced concrete member subject to biaxial bending and axial load has been used Using this computer program, the interaction diagrams and failure surface were developed for L-shaped members under combined bending and axial compression. A comparison between theoretical and experimental results was included to examine the validity of failure surface.

Moment Method Solution Of The Time-Dependent Transport Equation To Describe The Scattering Of Gaussian Plane Wave Pulses By A Forest, Nack Yang Cho Jan 1983

Moment Method Solution Of The Time-Dependent Transport Equation To Describe The Scattering Of Gaussian Plane Wave Pulses By A Forest, Nack Yang Cho

Theses

The time dependent transport equation is used to study the transmission of periodic pulses through a forest. The forest is assumed to occupy a half-space region, to be statistically homogeneous and to scatter energy isotropically A periodic sequence of Gaussian plane wave pulses is assumed to enter the forest normally from free space. The transport equation is solved by the moment method using triangular expansion functions. Numerical results indicate the dependence of the incoherent intensity on penetration depth, observation angle, albedo and pulse repetition rate.

Numerical Solution Of Navier-Stokes Equation By Finite Element Method, Kuan-Tzong Lee Jan 1983

Numerical Solution Of Navier-Stokes Equation By Finite Element Method, Kuan-Tzong Lee

Theses

A finite element method for solving the entrance flow in a parallel-plate channal at low Reynolds number has been studied. Two methods of formulation for both incompressible viscous and inviscid fluid flows were developed. The first uses stream function and potential function as field variables while the second uses velocity and pressure. Both formulations presented here ultilized variational principle and weighted residual method. The numerical example was solved by constrained variational principle with penalty functions in conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method. A 9-node quadratic quadrilateral element was used in this example. Numerical results for entrance flow problem were obtained for …

Computer Aided Analysis Of Electroencephalographic Waveforms, Edward Tadeusz Polkowski Jan 1983

Computer Aided Analysis Of Electroencephalographic Waveforms, Edward Tadeusz Polkowski

Theses

An approach to analysis of EEG waveforms is described. The procedure utilizes a PDP -11 computer to perform a Fast Fourier Transform on four channels of data simultaneously. The transforms are done in real time and. the results are plotted in a manner which allows the operator to easily determine the major background activity and to check for left-right symmetries in brain waves. Patient data is used to verify the computer output against actual clinical diagnoses.

Steady State Heat Transfer From Two Concentric Rings Of Spheres, Kevin J. Fitzpatrick Jan 1983

Steady State Heat Transfer From Two Concentric Rings Of Spheres, Kevin J. Fitzpatrick

Theses

The method of reflections was used to solve the steady state heat transfer problem for two concentric rings of spheres, all at equal surface temperature. The method results in a mathematical model for the three dimensional temperature profiles around the array of spheres. This model is used to develop an expression for heat transfer rate from the array. This work has resulted in a solution for dilute systems since no ring to ring interaction term was found.

On The Analysis And Design Of Clamped Rectangular Plate With Partial Load, Yacin Saaid Jaboury Jan 1983

On The Analysis And Design Of Clamped Rectangular Plate With Partial Load, Yacin Saaid Jaboury

Theses

In this Thesis, maximum deflection and bending moments of a partially loaded clamped rectangular plate are studied. The loading is uniformly applied to a retangular area proportional to the shape.

Navier's Solutions on partially loaded simply supported rectangular plate is superimposed with edge moments to give the clamped boundry condition.

Solutions of maximum deflection and bending moments are derived in Double Series form. A Fortran program is employed in obtaining the numerical results. When the partially loaded area approaches zero it becomes a centrally loaded case; and when loading area to plate area ratio approaches unity it becomes a uniformly …

Behavior Of Reinforced Fibrous Beam-Column Joints Under Cyclic Loads, Sitaram Mahadev Jan 1983

Behavior Of Reinforced Fibrous Beam-Column Joints Under Cyclic Loads, Sitaram Mahadev

Theses

From exploratory research of reinforced fibrous concrete, it has been shown that fibrous concrete is potentially superior and less costly than the conventional reinforced concrete.

The testing program consisted of ten beam-column joints with half of these joints containing 1-1/2 percent hooked end fibers. The beam column joints were constructed with less hoops than a conventional seismic joint would have, according to design specifications of the American Concrete Institute Code (ACI 318-77). In studying the behavior of these beam-column joints, two loading cases were examined:

(1) critical regions whose inelastic behavior was controlled by bending, and

(2) critical regions whose …

Flow Tube Reactions Of Selected Chlorocarbons With Molecular Hydrogen Or Water Vapor In A Microwave Induced Plasma Reactor, Robert Benedict Barat Jan 1983

Flow Tube Reactions Of Selected Chlorocarbons With Molecular Hydrogen Or Water Vapor In A Microwave Induced Plasma Reactor, Robert Benedict Barat

Theses

The reactions of various chlorinated hydrocarbons with molecular hydrogen or water vapor have been studied in a microwave plasma tubular flow reactor. The investigation of such reactions is desirable because the often toxic parent chlorocarbons are transformed to more thermodynamically stable and relatively non-toxic products by removal of' chlorine atoms as hydrogen chloride. Present detoxification technologies generally employ thermal oxidation as a means of disposal of chlorocarbons, which does not offer a thermodynamically stable sink for the chlorine atoms.

The experimental apparatus included feed introduction systems, a microwave plasma reactor, and full product analyses. The feed systems enabled use of …

Nonlinear Analysis Of Shear Walls And Shear Panels By Finite Element Method, Erhan Atay Oct 1982

Investigation Of Mental Workload In A Visual Inspection Task, Michel Alfandari May 1982

Investigation Of Mental Workload In A Visual Inspection Task, Michel Alfandari

Theses

This thesis consists of an investigation of the "mental workload" involved in a visual inspection task. A short-term laboratory experiment was conducted on twenty test subjects to study the effects of three typical job-related factors encountered in mental workload situations: load stress, time stress, and motivation. These effects were assessed through the subjects' performances as measured by speed and accuracy data. The analysis of the results revealed that an increase in load stress deteriorates both speed and accuracy, whereas time stress improves speed but only at the expense of accuracy. The expected positive influence of motivational factor (cash prizes) was …
