Effect Of Leaching On The Strength Properties Of A Hydrated Lime-Cement Stabilized Soil., Yurdakul Osman Ulugonul Jan 1960

Effect Of Leaching On The Strength Properties Of A Hydrated Lime-Cement Stabilized Soil., Yurdakul Osman Ulugonul

Masters Theses

"The stabilization of soil has been carried on since early historic times. The Romans used lime and volcanic ash as additives for this purpose. After the discovery of cement and its property of bonding soil particles it became one of the essential additives in the soil stabilization field. Many other kinds of additives have been developed and are being used today for soil stabilization.

A question that arises through the increasing use of stabilizers in soil is whether the changes that are effected are of a temporary or permanent nature. Changes may occur from the degradation of the stabilized soil …

"The experimental determination of some of the thermodynamic properties of germanium sulphide phases was conducted by a hydrogen reduction technique. The equilibrium H2S/H2 ratios were determined as a function of temperature for the two phase equilibria GeS2-GeS and GeS-Ge. A Tutwiler analysis technique was used to analyze the equilibrated gas mixture for hydrogen sulphide content.

A detailed description is given for the process and the apparatus used in performing the experiments for equilibration of H2S/H2 gas mixture. The methods used for the preparation of germanium sulphide phases are also discussed.

The investigation …

A Thermodynamic Study Of Germanium Sulfides, Sham Lal Malhotra Jan 1960

A Thermodynamic Study Of Germanium Sulfides, Sham Lal Malhotra

Masters Theses

"The vapour pressure of germanium monosulfide (liquid) was determined by a boiling point method. An expression for the vapour pressure as a function of temperature was obtained and the heat of vapourization calculated. Using the heat of sublimation data obtained by other investigators, the heat of fusion was calculated.

The thermodynamic properties, change of standard free energy (Δ F°) heat content (Δ H°) and entropy (Δ S°); of germanium disulfide were determined by using an indirect method. The equilibrium H2S/H2O ratios are determined for the reaction:

GeS2 (s) + 2H2O(g) = GeO2 …

The Equalization And Optimization Of A Third-Order Type-1 Position Control System, Viswanatha Seshadri Jan 1960

The Equalization And Optimization Of A Third-Order Type-1 Position Control System, Viswanatha Seshadri

Masters Theses

"While the practice of feedback control dates back to the day when the earliest living organisms began to react to their environmental conditions and the changes therein, it has been only during the past two decades that this technique came to be subjected to a scientific examination. Yet, an astoundingly rapid advancement has resulted in the field of servo-mechanisms, contributing substantially to the development of modern civilized existence and activity to its present standards, and promising to contribute, to an ever-increasing extent, to the accelerated progress of scientific and industrial enterprise in this space age.

The principal concerns of the …

A Study Of The Reaction Of Hydrated Lime With Pure Clay (Kaolin) In Clay Stabilization, Chiyyarath Velayudhan Girijavallabhan Jan 1960

A Study Of The Reaction Of Hydrated Lime With Pure Clay (Kaolin) In Clay Stabilization, Chiyyarath Velayudhan Girijavallabhan

Masters Theses

"The work presented is the investigation of the reaction of pure Kaolinite clay with hydrated lime in clay stabilization. Pure Kaolin clay, ranging from one micron to five microns in size, was mixed with calcium hydroxide in the form of a paste. These mixtures were permitted to react for varying periods of time. An attempt was made to separate the lime from clay lime mixture by density separation using a mixed solution of carbon tetrachloride and tetrabromoethane. Since the above method failed because of the formation of a yellow gelatinous suspension, the lime was removed by washing the clay lime …

Investigation Of Economic Design Procedure For A Rigid Frame, Richard S. Groner

Masters Theses

"This work presents an analysis of various arrangements of component parts of a rigid frame. From this analysis a procedure is indicated for a logical choice of member sizes for a first trial selection of a frame for given loading conditions. The first trial solution yields a frame which is in the range of an economical design"--Abstract, page 2.

Deflections Of Two-Way Slabs, Gerald C. Godzwon Jan 1960

Deflections Of Two-Way Slabs, Gerald C. Godzwon

Masters Theses

"A reinforced concrete member is by no means a truly elastic member, hence all ordinary deflection calculations relating to it, whichever method, are approximate. By the use of model study actual reinforced concrete slab models, of different end conditions, were built and tested for deflections under uniform loadings. Theoretical and actual deflection of reinforced concrete slabs are compared. The results of these tests indicate that the theoretical deflection equations may be 60 to 80 percent in error when applied to reinforced concrete slabs"--Abstract, page 2.

The Lattice Constants Of Chromium And Vanadium Containing Dissolved Gases, Paluri Bhimeswara Rao Jan 1960

The Lattice Constants Of Chromium And Vanadium Containing Dissolved Gases, Paluri Bhimeswara Rao

Masters Theses

"The physical properties of chromium and vanadium are so important that a study of their lattice constants and their coefficients of thermal expansion, requires special consideration.

A number of research workers, over a period of about forty years, have done considerable work in determining the above constants. Some of the previous investigators found an anomaly in the thermal expansion, electrical resistivity and other physical properties of chromium. They observed that at about 37°C, chromium showed a discontinuity in the above physical properties. However it is not known what causes the discontinuity in the expansivity curve of chromium. The discontinuity may …

A Method For The Prediction Of Detection Ranges For Pulsed Doppler Radar, Phillip Orlan Brown Jan 1960

A Method For The Prediction Of Detection Ranges For Pulsed Doppler Radar, Phillip Orlan Brown

Masters Theses

"Modern radar systems must provide greater detection ranges both against high and low altitude targets because of the significant advances in weapon speed and range. Extended range indicates that the power transmitted by the radar must be increased. It follows, that ground return becomes a problem even at high altitudes.

There are at present three basic types of radars which are (1) pulsed, (2) continuous wave, and (3) pulsed doppler radar. The conventional pulsed radar now closely approaches the theoretical optimum performance; however, it does not have the inherent ability to distinguish between ground return and moving targets. The continuous …

A Dissolution Rate Study In Hydrofluoric Acid Of Titanium And The Alpha Solid Solutions Of Oxygen In Titanium, John L. Ratliff Jan 1960

A Dissolution Rate Study In Hydrofluoric Acid Of Titanium And The Alpha Solid Solutions Of Oxygen In Titanium, John L. Ratliff

Masters Theses

"The dissolution mechanism of titanium in hydrofluoric acid was studied by collecting the hydrogen evolved during the dissolution reaction. A concentration range of 0.05 N to 0.50 N and a temperature range of 15°C to 45°C were employed for the determination. Values of the reaction order and energy of activation were determined for both pure titanium and the alpha solid solutions of oxygen in titanium and found to be the same within experimental limits. This indicated that the reaction giving rise to hydrogen evolution on the surfaces of both pure titanium and the TiOx alloys was the same. The …

Graphical Solution Of Concentration At Production Wells Of Injected Radioactive Water Tracers, George E. Vaughn Jr. Jan 1959

Graphical Solution Of Concentration At Production Wells Of Injected Radioactive Water Tracers, George E. Vaughn Jr.

Masters Theses

"With the advent of field research in which radioactive isotopes are used as tracers for water injected in secondary-recovery operations, knowledge of the probable transit time between wells of an injected tracer, its concentration at detection points, and the resultant optimum injection concentration has become important. Both detection and, consequently, injection concentrations of radioactive tracers are at least in part functions of the loss of tracer for various reasons, flow characteristics between wells, the rate of decay of radioactive emission, and the sensitivity of the detection apparatus. A method, based on the characteristics of a homogeneous 5-spot system, has been …

Bonded Joint Strength Versus Loading Rate, Charless William Fowlkes Jan 1959

Bonded Joint Strength Versus Loading Rate, Charless William Fowlkes

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of the rate of loading variable on the apparent shear strengths of joints bonded with some of the currently available metal-to-metal adhesives. The effects of this variable are sometimes neglected by testing laboratories. The results of an experimental evaluation of the mechanical behavior of a group on modern metal-to-metal adhesives as a function of the rate of load application are used to more accurately establish the importance of rate of load considerations in adhesive joint testing. An attempt is made to explain observations of other investigators engaged in adhesive joint …

Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson Jan 1959

Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson

Masters Theses

"The Vierendeel Truss, or Rigid Frame Truss, was first introduced by Professor Arthur Vierendeel in Belgium at the beginning of the century. The Vierendeel Truss differs from the more common triangulated truss in that it contains no diagonal members. The members of the truss are joined rigidly together and each member is required to transmit bending, shear and direct stress.

Professor Vierendeel claimed that Vierendeel Trusses are 20 to 30 percent cheaper than the conventional type of truss. This statement has been challenged by many who believe that this type of truss is fundamentally inferior to the more conventional type. …

Evaluation Of The Force Constants Of Non-Polar Gases From Viscosity Data, Charles Warren Keller Jan 1959

Evaluation Of The Force Constants Of Non-Polar Gases From Viscosity Data, Charles Warren Keller

Masters Theses

"Studies of the intermolecular forces and potential energy functions have been largely of a theoretical nature. Various empirical statements representing these theories have been developed and tested. Of these, the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential is one of the more realistic and has become the most favored when dealing with non-polar molecules.

The values of these “force constants” or the values of the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential parameters, have been determined from both diffusion and viscosity data. Although these “force constants” can be determined from diffusional measurements as well as viscosity data, the literature is predominately filled with values of force constants which …

Chemical Kinetics Of The Zirconium-Hydrofluoride Reaction, Wayne G. Custead Jan 1959

Chemical Kinetics Of The Zirconium-Hydrofluoride Reaction, Wayne G. Custead

Masters Theses

"It has been only in recent years that hafnium-free zirconium has been made available for commercial use. When economical methods were developed in 1950 to remove hafnium from zirconium, a metal was produced which not only exhibited good corrosion resistance and desirable physical properties, but which also had a very low absorption cross section for thermal neutrons. These factors have led to its most important application to date, that of a structural material for nuclear reactors.

The outstanding non-nuclear property of zirconium is its corrosion resistance to most mineral acids. Hafnium-free zirconium exhibits outstanding resistance to all mineral acids with …

The Effects Of Ultrasonically-Induced Cavitation Upon Dissolved Oxygen, Free Carbon Dioxide, And Bicarbonate Ion Concentration In Water, Charles Alvin Wentz Jr. Jan 1959

The Effects Of Ultrasonically-Induced Cavitation Upon Dissolved Oxygen, Free Carbon Dioxide, And Bicarbonate Ion Concentration In Water, Charles Alvin Wentz Jr.

Masters Theses

"Cavitation may be encountered in many scientific fields. Mechanical and civil engineers are concerned with the prevention of cavitation erosion in the design of turbines, propellers, underwater missiles, and similar structures. Biologists and physiologists are seeking more knowledge concerning the tensile strength of liquids, such as, tree sap and the formation of gas bubbles in the blood stream. Finally, the physicist and acoustical engineer must cope with the cavitation problem when working with underwater transducers, cavitation noise, and the propagation of acoustical signals through media in which cavitation is occurring.

There are many forces which hold a liquid together and …

The Effect Of Rare Earth Additions On Low Alloy Steel, Sukh Dev Sehgal Jan 1959

The Effect Of Rare Earth Additions On Low Alloy Steel, Sukh Dev Sehgal

Masters Theses

"Rare earth metals have for some years been used as an inoculant in nonferrous foundry practice and lately in the production of nodular iron. It has been reported that addition of rare earth metal to certain grades of stainless steel so improve the hot malleability that reduction of large size ingots in the blooming mill is now possible. It has been reported that considerable improvement in soundness and mechanical properties of steel castings and wrought products have been attained as a result of small additions of rare earth metals and oxides. In practically all investigations, it has been reported that …

Mechanization Of First Stage Graphitization In Fe- C-Si- Alloys, Dildar S. Gill

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the mechanism of first stage graphitization in iron-carbon-silicon alloys in the light of results obtained by Taub, and to propose a new mechanism of graphitization. The results of preliminary experiments confirmed the findings of Taub as regards the precipitation of secondary carbides. Therefore, it was decided to extend the investigation so as to include the study of growth of secondary carbides. In order to know the chief factor responsible for the growth of secondary carbides, the activation energy was calculated. Another factor which was investigated was the site of graphite nuclei formation”--Purpose …

X-Ray Diffraction Study Of The Metal Powder Compacts, Rajendra Sharan Jan 1959

X-Ray Diffraction Study Of The Metal Powder Compacts, Rajendra Sharan

Masters Theses

"Various theories have been put forward about the mechanism of compacting and sintering processes. None of these theories are confirmed. The reason is that most of these theories are based on observations on metallographic specimens, which is not a particularly good tool for such a study. Little data using xray diffraction analysis is available and there seems to be a great need of making a thorough investigation in this direction.

The main object of this investigation is to study xray diffraction patterns of green compacts of aluminum, nickel and copper powders pressed under different compacting pressures to see if any …

The Effects Of Fly-Ash On Dynamic Modulus Of Elasticity Of A Concrete Mortar, Bill L. Atchley Jan 1959

The Effects Of Fly-Ash On Dynamic Modulus Of Elasticity Of A Concrete Mortar, Bill L. Atchley

Masters Theses

"Over the last few years an increasing amount of interest has been shown in the use of prestressed concrete. As is true in many new methods of design or construction, the properties of existing materials to be used sometimes fail to meet all the desirable characteristics, and certain modifications might be advantageous. This is certainly true of prestressed concrete design and construction, in which a lower modulus of elasticity accompanied by a minimum loss in strength would be desirable. If a lower modulus of elasticity could be obtained for concrete, a lower prestressing load could be used and still maintain …

Frequency Response Of Rotating Servo Components, Yehuda Rachovitsky Jan 1959

Frequency Response Of Rotating Servo Components, Yehuda Rachovitsky

Masters Theses

"The frequency response approach to the design of automatic controls is the dominant one today. This approach in a strict sense may be said to have started with a paper in 1932 by Dr. H. Nyquist, a physicist at the Bell Telephone Laboratories. In this paper Dr. Nyquist was concerned with the stability of feedback amplifiers. This work can be said to have made possible the transcontinental telephone as well as modern radio and television. Dr. Hendrick Bode, mathematician at the Bell Laboratory, extended the results of Dr. Nyquist and obtained some simple design criteria that enabled even technicians without …

Stabilization Of Swelling Clay Soil By Additions Of Calcium Hydroxide And Calcium Oxide, Anthony Diler Jan 1959

Stabilization Of Swelling Clay Soil By Additions Of Calcium Hydroxide And Calcium Oxide, Anthony Diler

Masters Theses

"As a study of all types of stabilization would be very lengthy, it was decided to make the object of this research the determination of the effect of the addition of different percentages of calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 on the physical characteristics of a silty swelling sodium montmorillionite clay. The purpose of this addition is to flocculate the clay by utilizing a base exchange between the sodium and calcium ions, and thus change the physical characteristics of the soil. The soil by itself has the characteristics of a fat clay, that is it can be broken …
