The Effect Of The Rare Earth Elements On The Hot Workability Of Ingot Iron, L. A. Neumeier Jan 1960

The Effect Of The Rare Earth Elements On The Hot Workability Of Ingot Iron, L. A. Neumeier

Masters Theses

"The effect of mischmetal and rare earth oxides on the hot workability of ingot iron in the hot-short region was studied. Thirteen heats were melted in air in a basic-lined induction furnace. All heats were thoroughly deoxidized with aluminum prior to the rare earth additions. Mischmetal was added in amounts of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 per cent. Rare earth oxides were added in amounts of 0.1 and 0.2 per cent. Temperatures were maintained at approximately 2900°F and holding intervals between mischmetal additions and pouring at two minutes. Bars were hot rolled and swaged for hot twisting in the hot-short region. …

Determination Of Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data By Continuous Distillation, David William Bunch Jan 1960

Determination Of Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data By Continuous Distillation, David William Bunch

Masters Theses

"The procuring of experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium data has been a problem of considerable importance to chemical engineers for a number of years. Modern distillation theory and practice have made accurate vapor-liquid equilibrium data practically a necessity.

Using conventional methods for determining vapor-liquid equilibrium data, an experimenter can obtain only a single vapor-liquid equilibrium composition per trial. Ramalho working with Tiller has developed a new method which makes possible the determination of all values of the vapor and liquid concentrations in a single experiment.

The work done by Ramalho indicated that the necessity for very precise temperature measurements presented a serious …

Segregation Method As Possible Process To Beneficiate Oxidized Lead Ores, Jose Molfino Tomasio Jan 1960

Segregation Method As Possible Process To Beneficiate Oxidized Lead Ores, Jose Molfino Tomasio

Masters Theses

"In this investigation it has been demonstrated that the Segregation Process has merit for treating oxidized lead ores.

The process comprises heating the crushed ore with salt and coal at about 750° C. to produce metallic lead attached to the carbon particles, which then is recovered by conventional flotation methods.

The quantities of sodium chloride and coal required for the best segregation of lead obtained in this work was 1.0 percent of coal and 1.0 percent of salt by weight.

Good segregation was obtained by using salt and coal as fine as 65 or 48 mesh. Segregation varied with the …

The Separation Of Selected Radioactive Fission Products By Electrodialysis, Jerry David Vie Jan 1960

The Separation Of Selected Radioactive Fission Products By Electrodialysis, Jerry David Vie

Masters Theses

"The recent advent of nuclear energy has opened an era of almost unlimited power and countless problems. A problem of extreme importance is the recovery of unburned nuclear fuel and the claiming of transmutation products, such as Pu239 and U233, from the irradiated fuel elements. The chemical processing must also separate the fission products from the fissionable material if the fuel is to be used again.

At present, the irradiated fuel elements are stored for 90 to 120 days to allow the intense short half-life activity to decay. After "cooling down", the nuclear fuels are separated from …

Water Resources Development -- An Analysis Of Economic Justification Practices Of The Corps Of Engineers, Kerwood W. Barrand Jan 1960

Water Resources Development -- An Analysis Of Economic Justification Practices Of The Corps Of Engineers, Kerwood W. Barrand

Masters Theses

"Presented herein is a brief analysis of the economic justification practices of the Corps of Engineers as commonly implemented in proposals concerning water resources projects. Where applicable, recommended methods are compared to similar methods advocated for, and accepted by, private engineering firms in similar situations.

The major problem exists in the lack of a profit motive in programs undertaken with the use of public funds. However, a profit can be said to have been realized in public works programs if the total benefits of the programs to all the people exceed the costs of these programs and, further, if the …

An Experimental Investigation Of Receiver System Sensitivity, James Henry Johnson Jan 1960

An Experimental Investigation Of Receiver System Sensitivity, James Henry Johnson

Masters Theses

"A method of determining the minimum detectable power density incident at the receiving antenna of a UHF receiver is proposed. The minimum detectable power density is the power density required to produce a signal-to-noise ratio of unity in the output of the receiver. The proposed method includes the receiving antenna impedance, the necessary connecting transmission lines, and the receiver impedance.

It is shown that an error in the antenna directivity will produce a significant error in the overall sensitivity of a receiving system. Since the directivity is the most difficult system variable to determine experimentally, it is probably the limiting …

A Method Of Fuel Testing In A Cfr Engine, George R. Baumgartner Jan 1960

A Method Of Fuel Testing In A Cfr Engine, George R. Baumgartner

Masters Theses

"At the present time, only a very small fraction of motor fuels produced for domestic use in the United States contain any alcohol in their blends. Soma foreign markets, notably the Philippine Islands and South American Countries use high proportions of alcohol in their motor fuel blends. Special purpose fuels in the United States which have alcohol blended with other compounds, have been used for engines from which maximum horsepower output is imperative. An example of this type of motor fuel blend might be found in the competitive motor sports involving motorcycles, stock automotive equipment, and special racing equipment.

Construction Of A Pulsed Perforated-Plate Extraction Unit, Clarence James Vetter Jr. Jan 1960

Construction Of A Pulsed Perforated-Plate Extraction Unit, Clarence James Vetter Jr.

Masters Theses

"Liquid-liquid extraction is an important operation in the production and reprocessing of nuclear fuels. In the purification of uranium by liquid-liquid extraction, uranyl nitrate is separated from impurities by extraction into an organic solvent, followed by re-extraction into an aqueous phase. Further processing of the aqueous uranyl nitrate solution is tailored to yield uranium metal or any desired uranium compound.

In order that students in nuclear and chemical engineering may have an understanding of the practical as well as theoretical aspects of liquid-liquid extraction, a model of a uranium purification plant was designed and built in the Unit Operations Laboratory …

The Status Of Gas-Lubricated Bearings, Bhaskar Dattatraya Shiwalkar Jan 1960

The Status Of Gas-Lubricated Bearings, Bhaskar Dattatraya Shiwalkar

Masters Theses

"The idea of gas-lubricated bearings was suggested as far back as 1854 by Hirn, but it is only very recently that they have aroused a great amount of interest. The interest is centered on the advantages of gas-bearings for the following major applications:

  1. High temperature lubrication where ordinary liquid or grease lubrication fails.
  2. Bearings operating in radio-active atmospheres where conventional lubrication may break down.
  3. Applications sensitive to contamination where fouling from lubricating oil becomes serious.
  4. Low-friction devices--an especially important advantage because of the trend to high speed machinery.
  5. Applications where positional accuracies down to micro-inches are required.

As a result …

The Conducting Sheet Analogy For Laplace And Poisson Equations, Ronald Edward Volker Jan 1960

The Conducting Sheet Analogy For Laplace And Poisson Equations, Ronald Edward Volker

Masters Theses

"This investigation determined the accuracy to be expected with conducting sheet analogy solutions for Laplace and Poisson equations using simple and relatively inexpensive instrumentation. Several problems were solved experimentally and compared to known theoretical solutions to check variables in the technique and the accuracy of the experimental solution. It was found that if proper procedures are followed, solutions can be obtained rather rapidly and with an error of less than 5% which compares favorably with accuracy obtained by other investigators with more complex, precise equipment"--Abstract, page 2.

Design Of An Intermediate Frequency Amplifier And Variable Frequency Oscillator, Robert Charles Mcintyre Jan 1960

Design Of An Intermediate Frequency Amplifier And Variable Frequency Oscillator, Robert Charles Mcintyre

Masters Theses

"Since the advent of the transistor in 1948 many technological barriers have been overcome in the field of semiconductors. Unfortunately, however, there is a considerable period of time between the discovery of a scientific phenomena and its widespread use and understanding by practicing engineers. The motivating factor which prompted this investigation was primarily the lack of knowledge which the author possessed concerning transistors. The selection of the amplifier and oscillator design confined the study primarily to the transistor. Considerable time, however, had to be spent in the study of basic transistor theory before any phase of the design could be …

The Determination Of The Heat Transfer Film Coefficients Of Internally Heated And Twisted Strips, Karpurapu Venkata Apparao Jan 1960

The Determination Of The Heat Transfer Film Coefficients Of Internally Heated And Twisted Strips, Karpurapu Venkata Apparao

Masters Theses

"As the demand for power supply is increasing, the power from nuclear fission is assuming an important role in the field of power production. The enormous quantity of heat generated during the fission process can be utilized for the generation of power. To get maximum advantage out of the fission process, the fission material must be fabricated into a unit of proper shape to permit the control of the process and safe removal of heat generated. This unit, composed of fuel elements is known as the reactor core and is one of the major concerns in nuclear power development.

The Effect Of Boundry Layer Control By Passing Fluid Through Transverse Slots On Heat Transfer From A Pipe, Perakatte Joseph George Jan 1960

The Effect Of Boundry Layer Control By Passing Fluid Through Transverse Slots On Heat Transfer From A Pipe, Perakatte Joseph George

Masters Theses

"The object of this work is an experimental investigation into the possibility of obtaining an increase in the forced convection heat transfer coefficient for a pipe by passing the fluid through narrow transverse slots cut in the pipe, and thereby altering the boundary layer pattern.

Since the greatest barrier to the flow of heat from a solid to liquid exists at the boundary layer, it can be expected that any device which will alter the boundary layer pattern will alter the heat transfer coefficient. When mass crosses a boundary layer in a direction perpendicular to the main motion of the …

Effect Of Boundry Layer Control, Through Surface Holes, On The Film Coefficient Of Convective Heat Transfer, Jainti Prasad Jan 1960

Effect Of Boundry Layer Control, Through Surface Holes, On The Film Coefficient Of Convective Heat Transfer, Jainti Prasad

Masters Theses

"This thesis has as its objective, the effect of some boundary layer control on the convective heat transfer film coefficient, metal to liquid. The boundary layer control was produced by drilling 1/16 inch diameter holes on the tube surface.

In this modern world of atoms and the current development of large quantities of its energy at low cost, the subject of designing heat exchange devices of higher efficiency is receiving considerable attention. In a reactor, or any type of heat exchange device, there are limits for the temperatures of a heat exchange surface because of corrosion, strength of metals etc. …

A Thermodynamic Study Of The System Pbo-Pbs, John P. Hager Jan 1960

A Thermodynamic Study Of The System Pbo-Pbs, John P. Hager

Masters Theses

"An experimental investigation was conducted in order to determine the thermodynamic and kinetic behavior of the system PbO-PbS.

The thermodynamic behavior of the system PbO-PbS was studied by measuring the PSO₂ in argon-SO2 mixtures equilibrated with various PbO-PbS mixtures in a recirculating-type equilibrium apparatus, and analyzing the condensed phases by means of X-ray diffraction.

The effect of temperature and PbO/PbS ratio on the rate of SO2 evolution was investigated in order to determine the reaction mechanisms involved in the approach to equilibrium.

A sodium hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide titration technique was employed in the analysis of SO2 …

Construction Of Distillation Solvent Recovery System, Joseph Richard Aid Iii Jan 1960

Construction Of Distillation Solvent Recovery System, Joseph Richard Aid Iii

Masters Theses

"When a nuclear fuel is “burnt” in an atomic reactor it is not possible to completely utilize the fissionable material present due to build-up of fission products (which act as poisons), depletion of the fissionable material, and radiation damage to the fuel elements. Chemical processing of nuclear fuels is concerned with the recovery of the fissionable materials, specifically uranium, plutonium, and thorium, from the spent fuel elements. There are two general methods of reprocessing nuclear fuels: aqueous and non-aqueous. The aqueous methods include solvent extraction, ion exchange, and precipitation. Comprising the non-aqueous methods are fluoride volatility and pyrometallurgy. At the …

Automatic Tuning Of A.C. Compensating Networks, Giles C. Sinkewiz Jan 1960

Automatic Tuning Of A.C. Compensating Networks, Giles C. Sinkewiz

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the practicality of using an auxiliary servo system to shift parameters in damping networks of the main servo system.

Since amplification is most easily achieved with A.C. amplifiers and since A.C. servo motors are superior in operation to D.C. servo motors, because no brushes or commutators are needed, the A.C. servo system is widely used. However, one major problem is confronted when designing an A.C. servo system. This is the problem of designing damping circuits and compensating circuits which are insensitive to carrier frequency fluctuations. Notch filters provide the desired transfer functions, …

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Additives On The Collapsibility Of Carbon Dioxode-Sodium Silicate Bonded Foundry Cores, Robert G. Liptai Jan 1960

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Additives On The Collapsibility Of Carbon Dioxode-Sodium Silicate Bonded Foundry Cores, Robert G. Liptai

Masters Theses

"Every foundry is searching for methods and tools to raise product quality and production while lowering cost. In early 1954 published articles on the new carbon dioxide-sodium silicate process of core hardening began to stir the imagination of most of the foundries throughout the United States, This process has probably claimed more space in the foundry journals than any other subject, hailed by some as a cure-all and dismissed by others as unsatisfactory.

The list of advantages of this process was impressive, but anyone associated with the process was confronted with daily problems that had to be solved regardless of …

The Evaluation Of The Influence Of Large Aggregate On The Permeability Of Single-Grained Soils, Edward Clayton Grubbs Jan 1960

The Evaluation Of The Influence Of Large Aggregate On The Permeability Of Single-Grained Soils, Edward Clayton Grubbs

Masters Theses

"Each year many earth fill structures are designed and built with the primary purpose of impounding water. As these structures are only relatively impervious, engineers must consider the control of seepage in design. In order to predict seepage, the engineer must have knowledge of the potential flow or water through the earthen structure. He is, therefore, faced with the problem of determining a coefficient of permeability for use in design calculations.

The coefficient of permeability is easily enough determined for fine-grained materials. However, in construction it is very rare to find proper fill material which does not include quite a …

Properties Of Air-Entrained Concrete At Early Ages, Ugur Ozoguz Jan 1960

Properties Of Air-Entrained Concrete At Early Ages, Ugur Ozoguz

Masters Theses

"This study, entitled "Properties of Air-Entrained Concrete at Early Ages" concerns a group of tests designed to provide quantitative information regarding the effect of entrained air on the strength and durability of concrete before it reaches its 28 day strength.

Experiences in the field and laboratories have demonstrated that the addition of a moderate amount of air to any concrete mix will bring a marked increase in resistance to the disintegrating effects of freezing and thawing.

There have been extensive studies made on the subject of durability of air entrained concrete. Most of these studies were based on the effect …

Effects Of Co2 On The Strength Of Lime Treated Clay Soil, Tuncer Karakurt Jan 1960

Effects Of Co2 On The Strength Of Lime Treated Clay Soil, Tuncer Karakurt

Masters Theses

“A large number of the difficulties encountered in highway work are due to the variable nature of soils. In addition to its variable nature, soil is a difficult material to deal with because of the complexity of its physical and chemical properties. From prehistoric times the construction of a satisfactory foundation has been one of the greatest problems facing the engineer and builder. Even though the needs of scientific methods were necessary far earlier, the study of soils as a construction material was scientifically given attention to only during the last three decades. Soil science being so young there are …

Preparation Of Casting Slips Containing Ferrous Powders And Alginates, Robert Eugene Newcomer Jan 1960

Preparation Of Casting Slips Containing Ferrous Powders And Alginates, Robert Eugene Newcomer

Masters Theses

"The preparation of casting slips containing ferrous powders dispersed by alginates was studied and an attempt was made to determine the mechanism by which suspension was attained. The colloidal aspects of preparing ceramic casting slips are discussed and an analogy is drawn to preparation of metallic slips suspended by alginates.

Sodium and ammonium alginates were used to suspend stainless steel and iron powders. The effect of NaOH, HC1, and various phosphate additions on the properties of slips and algin solutions was considered.

It was found that colloidal concepts can not be applied to explain observed behavior in the system studied. …

Electrical Model Investigations Using The Horizontal Profiling Technique, Alan H. Kwentus Jan 1960

Electrical Model Investigations Using The Horizontal Profiling Technique, Alan H. Kwentus

Masters Theses

"Electrical exploration methods have been used for many years as a means of determining subsurface structures and in the search for mineral deposits. Vertical profiling techniques can be used to determine rather accurately the resistivity and thichness of horizontal or gently dipping beds for cases up to four layers. Mathematical calculations have been made for multiple layers and theoretical curves have been computed and published for four and more layers. The vertical profiling method is not particularly well suited to the problem of locating lateral changes in resistivity produced by such features as ore bodies, sinks and channels. These features …

The Separation And Microdetermination Of Cobalt In High Purity Nickel, John Richard Knapp Jr. Jan 1960

The Separation And Microdetermination Of Cobalt In High Purity Nickel, John Richard Knapp Jr.

Masters Theses

"It has been found that many substances in an extremely pure form or containing certain trace impurities exhibit many unique physical and chemical properties. Investigators studying these properties have encountered many difficulties, especially in preparing the extremely pure substance and/or in accurately determining the quantity of impurities present. These problems arise chiefly from the very similar chemical properties of the constituents being separated and the possibility of contamination during the necessary processing of the substance for purification or analysis.

Trace analysis, therefore, has become very important in recent years. Where previously analyses based upon parts per hundred were adequate, now …

Critical Load For A Rectangular Plate Simply Supported On Three Edges, Built In On The Fourth Edge, And Compressed On Two Opposite Simply Supported Edges By A Load In The Plane Of The Plate, Bert Louis Smith Jan 1960

Critical Load For A Rectangular Plate Simply Supported On Three Edges, Built In On The Fourth Edge, And Compressed On Two Opposite Simply Supported Edges By A Load In The Plane Of The Plate, Bert Louis Smith

Masters Theses

"There are many engineering structures in which thin plates are used extensively, some examples of which can be found in ship and airplane structures, bridges, etc. The problem contained in this thesis is the analysis of a thin rectangular plate simply supported on three edges, built in on the fourth edge, and compressed on two opposite simply supported edges by a load in the plane or the plate. This problem becomes one of stability, and the object of the solution is to find the smallest load that will cause the plate to buckle"--Introduction, page vi.
