Steady State Temperature Distribution In A Rotating Disk, George Henry Morgan Jan 1959

Steady State Temperature Distribution In A Rotating Disk, George Henry Morgan

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to obtain an expression for the steady state temperature distribution of a disk of uniform thickness rotating at a constant speed in ambient air while absorbing heat through the periphery at a constant rate. Engineers encounter such problems in connection with brakes of several varieties. The general solution obtained here could be extended to similar physical problems such as grinding wheels, disk clutches, and so on.

A differential equation was obtained for the temperature in the disk by the application of Fourier's conduction law and Newton’s convection law. A solution of this equation was …

Effect Of Alkaline Earth Chlorides On Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Of Acetic Acid-Water System, James F. Carnahan Jan 1959

Effect Of Alkaline Earth Chlorides On Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Of Acetic Acid-Water System, James F. Carnahan

Masters Theses

"In the separation of a system of liquids by distillation the ease with which they may be separated is most clearly indicated by the relative volatility; the greater the value of the relative volatility, the greater the ease of separation.

A system that contains compounds whose boiling points are spread over a relatively small temperature range is not readily separated by distillation. The addition of a substance that reduces the vapor pressure of one of the components, while having little or no effect on the others, adds to the ease of separation and consequently would decrease the initial size and …

Methods And Time Study In Mining Operations, Cyril Jones Jan 1959

Methods And Time Study In Mining Operations, Cyril Jones

Masters Theses

"It was the purpose of this study to evolve and present in a logical manner a method of approach from the efficiency standpoint, to mining operation problems. This, it was thought, could be best achieved by means of a method and time study program, which could examine all the operations in whatever detail was required"--Statement of the problem, page 1.

Unsteady State Heat Transfer From A Hot Body To A Liquid, Larry Clinton Atha Jan 1959

Unsteady State Heat Transfer From A Hot Body To A Liquid, Larry Clinton Atha

Masters Theses

"The problem investigated in this thesis is that of unsteady state heat transfer from a hot body to a liquid, a quenching problem. Unsteady state or transient heat transfer is heat transfer in which the temperature distribution changes with time.

If a hot body was suddenly quenched in a large mass of liquid, a film of vapor would form between the hot body and the liquid. For example, if a hot body was quenched in water a film of steam would form between the hot body and the water. It is the purpose of this thesis to determine the heat …

Stability Of Rectangular Plates By Arbitrary Deflection Method, James Arthur Jones Jan 1959

Stability Of Rectangular Plates By Arbitrary Deflection Method, James Arthur Jones

Masters Theses

"Many engineering structures use thin rectangular plates as members. These plates may be loaded and supported in numerous ways. The edges may be freely supported, rigidly supported, or supported by elastic members. The load may be applied normal to the plane of the plate, in which case the problem becomes essentially one of bending. If the load is applied in the plane of the plate, placing it in compression, the problem becomes one of stability.

This investigation is concerned with the stability of plates rigidly supported on all edges and having a compressive load applied to two opposite edges of …

Regulation Of River Bank Development Through Flood Plain Zoning, William James O'Neill Jan 1959

Regulation Of River Bank Development Through Flood Plain Zoning, William James O'Neill

Masters Theses

"The triangular pattern of protection, evacuation and flood plain zoning, as the only truly effective and comprehensive approach to proper flood control, is substantiated in practically all technical publications on this subject by economic and engineering leaders. Yet in actual practice, at the present time, flood plain zoning is not being actively applied by any federal flood control agency and by only one of the forty-nine states faced with this common problem. This lack of direct application was probably best described recently by Walter B. Langbein, Water Resources Division Engineer, U. S. Geological Survey when he said, "Flood Plain Zoning, …

The Vapor Pressures Of Pbo-Sb₂O₃-Sio₂ Mixtures., John Henry Smith Jan 1959

The Vapor Pressures Of Pbo-Sb₂O₃-Sio₂ Mixtures., John Henry Smith

Masters Theses

"The removal of antimony is one of the important steps in the production of pure lead. The process of removing antimony from impure lead bullion is called "lead softening". The most common method used is to blow air into a bath of impure molten lead. The impurities, primarily antimony, arsenic and tin, if present, are oxidized and form a slag or "dross" which floats on the surface of the lead bath. A considerable amount of lead is oxidized in this step and joins the other oxidized compounds in the dross. This dross is skimmed from the bath of molten lead …

Linear And Vortex Flow Heat Transfer Coefficients, Edward Robert Schmidt Jr. Jan 1959

Linear And Vortex Flow Heat Transfer Coefficients, Edward Robert Schmidt Jr.

Masters Theses

"In order to make possible better, more efficient equipment, a higher and higher rate of heat transfer has been the goal of engineers for many years. The need for heat transfer rates never thought of 25 years ago has been brought about by the advent of modern high-performance devices such as nuclear reactors and rocket motors. "A heat release of about 40,000 Btu/hr.cu.ft. is considered good practice in a modern boiler, but in a rocket or a nuclear reactor it may be 1,000,000,000 Btu/hr.cu.ft." This heat must be removed by transfer to a coolant or converted into work or the …

Application Of Statistical Methods To Evaluation Of Mineral Deposits, Francis R. Saupé Jan 1959

Application Of Statistical Methods To Evaluation Of Mineral Deposits, Francis R. Saupé

Masters Theses

"Only in recent years have statistical methods been applied to evaluation of ore reserves. An attempt is made in this study to prepare an outline to be followed throughout the exploration in order that statistical methods can be applied to valuation problems. Particular emphasis is given to the preliminary requirements to a statistical approach. Representative parameters, sampling pattern, and sample size are discussed in separate chapters"--Abstract, page iii.

The Effect Of Heating Chill Cast Eutectics, Robert Lewis Dreshfield Jan 1959

The Effect Of Heating Chill Cast Eutectics, Robert Lewis Dreshfield

Masters Theses

"This investigation is the result of the author's specific interest in two phase systems. In the past, considerable work has been done investigating the alteration of eutectoid structures; however, eutectic structures have been neglected to a great extent. Tammann did some work on the subject in 1937 as did Brown and Guy in more recent times. In both of the above cases the eutectic structure was altered by cold working and subsequent heating of the alloy.

Tammann also noted that eutectics chill cast in liquid air display a vastly different structure than those cast under equilibrium conditions and that there …

Some Properties Of Chrome-Magnesite Mixtures And Calcium Aluminate Cement-Magnesite Mixtures, Edward Charles Duderstadt Jan 1959

Some Properties Of Chrome-Magnesite Mixtures And Calcium Aluminate Cement-Magnesite Mixtures, Edward Charles Duderstadt

Masters Theses

"The knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of refractories is of great importance in determining their usefulness and application. The thermal expansion of refractories is of particular importance in that it affects the thermal stability of the product. A high coefficient of thermal expansion leads to greater spalling and destruction of the bricks in use. It is, therefore, desirable to develop compositions having low coefficients of thermal expansion. This investigation was undertaken (1) to determine some of the properties of chromite-magnesite refractory mixtures in an attempt to determine the optimum composition of these mixtures, the specific properties including thermal …

Lattice Constants, Thermal Expansion Coefficients And Perfection Of The Phase Tio, Hsiung Wei Li Jan 1959

Lattice Constants, Thermal Expansion Coefficients And Perfection Of The Phase Tio, Hsiung Wei Li

Masters Theses

"TiO is one of the intermediate phases in the titanium - oxygen system with a crystal structure of the sodium chloride type. The phase extends from about 22 to 29 weight or about 46 to 55 atomic percent oxygen. A comprehensive survey of the physical properties of the phase has been made in previous investigations (see review of literature), but only impure titanium was available at that time. Therefore, some revision of the measurements had to be made. Also, neither the thermal expansion coefficients nor the temperature at which the lattice constants were measured were reported.

For precision determination of …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Natural Gas Combustion As Applied To Thermal Recovery Of Petroleum, Roger J. Schoeppel Jan 1959

A Preliminary Investigation Of Natural Gas Combustion As Applied To Thermal Recovery Of Petroleum, Roger J. Schoeppel

Masters Theses

"Present application of the subsurface combustion processes in the thermal recovery of petroleum afford favorable and opportune methods of providing greater recoveries from petroleum reservoirs. This study attempts to elucidate some of the parameters controlling the complex hydrocarbon oxidation for one such process. The experimental phase consisted of investigating the combustion behavior of eight nonexplosive and one explosive natural gas-air mixtures at low and intermediate pressures. The hydrocarbon was allowed to oxidize by self-ignition under controlled conditions within environments precluding a visible flame type reaction. Progress of the reaction was followed by measuring effluent oxygen content.

Experimental evidence indicate the …

A Comparison Of The Effect Of Pvt Data Application Methods On Predicted Depletion Drive Reservoir Performance, Frederick A. Klein Jan 1959

A Comparison Of The Effect Of Pvt Data Application Methods On Predicted Depletion Drive Reservoir Performance, Frederick A. Klein

Masters Theses

"It is generally agreed that the evolution of gas from oil within a reservoir is most closely approximated by the differential liberation process, while gas liberation in the flow string, surface separator, and stock tank is most nearly represented by flash liberation. To conform with this assumed physical behavior, appropriate application of both flash and differential liberation data in the computation of reservoir performance by material balance methods is indicated.

In this work, simple depletion-drive oil and gas recoveries were calculated (1) using differential liberation data only, and (2) using differential liberation data adjusted to incorporate the results of flash …

Effect Of Concrete Shrinkage On Stresses In Reinforcing Steel, C. Raymond Nowacki Jan 1958

Effect Of Concrete Shrinkage On Stresses In Reinforcing Steel, C. Raymond Nowacki

Masters Theses

"Shrinkage is one of four phenomena that are considered as causing volume changes in concrete, the other three being creep, temperature change effects, and possible chemical disintegration. While all four are interrelated, the volume change due to loss of moisture is associated with the term shrinkage. Creep is the time-dependent change in volume resulting from external loads. A rise or fall of temperature will produce an expansion or contraction of concrete but also will affect the rate of shrinkage by increasing or decreasing the rate of moisture evaporation from the surface of the concrete.

In the design of concrete structures, …

Rheological Measurement Of A Starch Suspension As A Dilatant Fluid, Earl Edward Pape Jan 1958

Rheological Measurement Of A Starch Suspension As A Dilatant Fluid, Earl Edward Pape

Masters Theses

"The measurement of the rheological properties, consistency of viscosity and fluid type, necessary for system design calculations, has fallen behind the industrial applications for non-Newtonian fluids. In the petroleum industry in particular, the process of well flow stimulation known as Hydraulic Fracturing utilizes the properties of various non-Newtonian fluids to carry sand at high flow rates to the formation to be fractured. Other non-Newtonian fluids in the petroleum industry are Bentonite clay drilling fluids, whose unique gelling properties are helpful in suspending drill cuttings when the circulation of the fluid has ceased. In Newtonian liquids and gases the consistency is …

Performance Characteristics Of A Tubular Regenerative Heat Exchanger, Harry J. Sauer Jr. Jan 1958

Performance Characteristics Of A Tubular Regenerative Heat Exchanger, Harry J. Sauer Jr.

Masters Theses

"The term regenerator is widely used to define any type of heat exchanger in which the heat is alternately stored and removed...The present investigation is concerned with the calculation of the characteristics of the "single-blow", tubular regenerative heater, its dimensions and performance. In the analysis in this thesis, the heat is considered to be stored in bundles of tubes initially preheated by hot gases flowing through the heater and subsequently cooled by the flow of air. This paper makes no attempt to deal with the effects of radiation from the outer row of tubes to the heater shell"--Introduction, page 1-3.

Effect Of Gamma Radiation On Selected Organic Protective Coatings, James W. Johnson Jan 1958

Effect Of Gamma Radiation On Selected Organic Protective Coatings, James W. Johnson

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to prepare pigmented and non-pigmented organic protective coatings and to irradiate them with gamma rays. The coatings received a constant radiation dose of eight million rads. Seven tests were performed on the various coatings. The data from the tests were tabulated so that a direct comparison could be made as to the effect of the radiation on the coatings. The data from the tests also enabled comparisons to be made to determine if the various pigments had imparted any specific properties that would be desirable in coatings being exposed to radiations"--Introduction, page 2.

A Preliminary Investigation Of Strains And Fracturing In Small Hydro-Stone Beams Due To Impact Loading, Niels B. Haubold Jan 1958

A Preliminary Investigation Of Strains And Fracturing In Small Hydro-Stone Beams Due To Impact Loading, Niels B. Haubold

Masters Theses

"Every structure has a fundamental frequency which is sometimes referred to as its first natural frequency. If a periodic force acts on the structure whose frequency is equal to that of the natural frequency of the structure, a vibration is set up whose amplitude would approach infinity if it were not for the presence of damping. Since damping is always present, steady state conditions will finally be reached provided that the applied force is not so great that it will cause the structure to fail. The amplitude of the vibration will be a function of the applied force and the …

Frost Formation And Its Influence Upon Heat Transfer, Jack Lewis Loper Jan 1958

Frost Formation And Its Influence Upon Heat Transfer, Jack Lewis Loper

Masters Theses

"The cooling of a gas-vapor mixture or a mixture of several vapors, in the general case, results in condensation (phase-change) of one or more of the vapors when their respective dew-points are reached. This results in a mass transfer of the vapor to the cooling surface accompanied by energy transfer as the vapor gives up its latent heat of vaporization to the surface and becomes a liquid. The liquid accumulation adds a resistance to the further transfer of mass and energy unless some means is provided for its removal from the surface, such as gravity action.

In this paper we …

Analysis Of Mining Mechanization In The Fluorspar Mine, Southern Illinois, Marangin Simatupang Jan 1958

Analysis Of Mining Mechanization In The Fluorspar Mine, Southern Illinois, Marangin Simatupang

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to analyze the underground mechanization in the fluorspar mines in Southern Illinois. The mining mechanization in this district is confronted with manifold problems which are typical of most small or medium size mines.

The ore reserve in each mine is not very large. The method of development had to be planned accordingly such as not to exceed the depreciative capacity of the deposit.

The ore bodies consist of thin bedded layers or small veins. This thickness controls the sizes of the equipment to be used.

The mining operations always lack skilled equipment operators. In …

Transients And Saturation In Synchronous Machines, Sabi J. Asseo Jan 1958

"The synchronous machine can be regarded as the most important electrical device in today's industry and civilization. Although many improvements in the development of powerful electronic devices have been made, in recent years, the importance of the electrical power engineering field can never be overlooked in any way.

Most of electrical power engineering problems have been studied in the first quarter of the present century, and the results applied to industry for the betterment of electrical power production. As distribution and transmission systems used become extensively large, new problems such as the stability of interconnected power systems, have been introduced. …

Design Of Liquid-Liquid Extraction System, Mehdi Rahmani Fard Jan 1958

Design Of Liquid-Liquid Extraction System, Mehdi Rahmani Fard

Masters Theses

"The unit operation of liquid-liquid extraction has developed enormously in the last 20 years and is now recognized as one of the most important techniques for the physical separation and refining of industrial liquids. For years the conventional apparatus used for liquid-liquid extraction has been towers employing countercurrent flow of the liquids and equipped with various means to increase the interfacial area.

The countercurrent column consists of a tower through which flows a continuous phase while countercurrent to this flow is a stream of droplets (the dispersed phase). Provision is made for dispersing one phase with a settling region at …

Reconstruction Of A Model L Podbielniak Fractional Distillation Apparatus, Raymond Bauer Jan 1958

Reconstruction Of A Model L Podbielniak Fractional Distillation Apparatus, Raymond Bauer

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis was to reconstruct a Model L Podbielniak Fractional Distillation Apparatus to provide equipment suitable for the study of batch multicomponent distillation. The apparatus will also serve as an analytical instrument. The equipment was instrumented to automatically control the distillation, but an operator is needed to select fractions and insure the proper functioning of the controls.

Samples of hydrocarbon mixtures of known composition were analyzed to prove the successful operation of the reconstructed apparatus"--Introduction, pages 2-3.

Effect Of Hydrated Lime And Portland Cement On The Physical Properties Of Clay Soil For Highway Base Construction, Judson Leong Jan 1958

Masters Theses

"The intent of this research is to determine the change in physical properties of a clay soil caused by the addition of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 percent of hydrated lime and portland cement. The effects of these admixtures on the physical properties of the soil were observed by comparing the results of various laboratory tests. The properties chosen for comparison were: (1) liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index; (2) shrinkage limit and shrinkage ratio; (3) density and optimum moisture; (4) resistance to penetration; (5) compressive strength and (6) cohesion and angle of internal friction. In order to …

The Development Of A Device To Replace The Oil Well Dynamometer, Jerry Bernard Overton Jan 1958

The Development Of A Device To Replace The Oil Well Dynamometer, Jerry Bernard Overton

Masters Theses

"The mechanical dynamometer is recognized as being a valuable tool in measuring resultant forces acting on the polished rod of an oil well pump. The dynamometer is used extensively to determine loads, torque, and horsepower. "It is also used to determine pump action and trouble-shoot for any seemingly abnormal pumping condition."

Although it is desirous to periodically make dynamometer studies, it is also very time consuming. Because of high labor costs, it has been almost discontinued by many companies. The author became convinced that a less costly method of obtaining the same information could be developed. This method was the …

Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer Jan 1958

Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer

Masters Theses

"With the rapidly increasing population in the United States the adequate disposal of sewage has become one of the major technical problems which the sanitary engineer has to solve. In most areas it is no longer acceptable practice to discharge domestic sewage or industrial waste products directly into streams or lakes because of the resulting pollution of the water, which may later be used for drinking or recreational purposes. Many larger cities have, therefore, adopted some method of sewage treatment which renders such wastes safe and unobjectionable before they are discharged into a lake or stream. Most of these methods …

Surface Temperature Measurement Of Metal Undergoing Induction Heating, Ding-Yee Nee Jan 1958

"It is the object of this thesis to investigate the possibility of using thermoelectric pyrometry for surface temperature measurement of metal undergoing induction heating. The temperature range under investigation, as stated before, is 400 °F to 1250 °F. This research may actually be treated by two sections.

The first section concerns the methods of using thermocouples for ordinary surface temperature measurements. The second section concerns the effect, if any, on thermocouple e.m.f. readings while it is measuring the surface temperature of a metal undergoing induction heating. The first section of the investigation has been well covered by literature and will …

Methods To Improve The Metallurgy Of Bolivian Tin Ores, Oscar Davila-Michel Jan 1958

Methods To Improve The Metallurgy Of Bolivian Tin Ores, Oscar Davila-Michel

Masters Theses

"Tin is a rare element; among the base metals it is one of the rarest. Although it was one of the first metals used by man and has been used since prehistoric time, the ore-dressing and metallurgical methods of tin are inefficient and very wasteful.

The only tin deposits of importance in the Americas are located in Bolivia, South America, and it is in Bolivia that the problems of tin metallurgy are greatest. More than 50% of the tin that is mined in Bolivia is lost in the tailing dumps of the beneficiation plants. In a country where the export …
