In-Situ Optical Measurements Of Combustion Plumes, Cara Frischkorn Apr 2023

In-Situ Optical Measurements Of Combustion Plumes, Cara Frischkorn

Student Research Symposium

The exhaust plumes of rocket and jet propulsion systems feature highly-oxidizing, potentially corrosive, extremely high temperature flows. The hostility of these environments makes obtaining in-situ thermal flow measurements extremely difficult. The conventional method for these measurements uses Gardon heat-flux gauges requiring complex and highly invasive installations which cannot be used for flight applications. More recent work has used fiberoptic cable installations to sense internal flow conditions of hybrid and solid fuel rockets. In this configuration, fiber optic cables inserted through the fuel and into the flow are consumed by the flame as the fuel surfaces pyrolyze, but the cable tips …

A New Framework To Assess The Individual Fairness Of Probabilistic Classifiers, Muhammad Fawad Akbar Khan Apr 2023

A New Framework To Assess The Individual Fairness Of Probabilistic Classifiers, Muhammad Fawad Akbar Khan

Student Research Symposium

Fairness in machine learning has become a global concern due to the predominance of ML in automated decision-making systems. In comparison to group fairness, individual fairness, which aspires that similar individuals should be treated similarly, has received limited attention due to some challenges. One major challenge is the availability of a proper metric to evaluate individual fairness, especially for probabilistic classifiers. In this study, we propose a framework PCIndFair to assess the individual fairness of probabilistic classifiers. Unlike current individual fairness measures, our framework considers probability distribution rather than the final classification outcome, which is suitable for capturing the dynamic …

Relating Throttled Hybrid Motor Performance To Oxidizer-To-Fuel Ratio, Trevor Coombs Apr 2023

Relating Throttled Hybrid Motor Performance To Oxidizer-To-Fuel Ratio, Trevor Coombs

Student Research Symposium

A hybrid rocket motor's ability to throttle and restart, along with other desirable traits, drives its potential to be an emerging technology in spaceflight applications. However, the current lack of an ability to maintain an optimal mixture ratio of oxidizer to fuel propellants, O/F ratio, during combustion limits the hybrid motor's overall efficiency. This study quantifies how variations in O/F ratio and combustion chamber pressure, which a throttle valve can indirectly manipulate upstream of the chamber, affect the characteristic velocity (c * ) and specific impulse (Isp) of the motor. The researcher uses an analytical hybrid rocket combustion model and …

Active Energy Management Of Hybrid Lithium-Ion Batteries For Electric Vehicle Applications, Marium Rasheed Apr 2023

Active Energy Management Of Hybrid Lithium-Ion Batteries For Electric Vehicle Applications, Marium Rasheed

Student Research Symposium

Energy storage systems that incorporate hybrid Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery packs leveraging the energy density and power density characteristics of different Li-ion chemistries have shown promise in reducing weight and volume while improving overall lifetime. A capacitively-coupled architecture, composite hybrid energy storage system (CHESS), has been proposed and demonstrated as a viable design for hybrid energy storage systems that combine energy-dense and power-dense battery packs. However, this architecture requires effective energy balancing among the battery packs to ensure optimal utilization. This work proposes an energy transfer unit (ETU) that consists of modular low-power dc-dc converters configured in a series-input, parallel-output arrangement. This …

Ganciclovir (GCV) has been shown to be an effective antiviral for the treatment of congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) induced sensorineural hearing loss. However, dose-dependent adverse effects (e.g. neutropenia) require strict, burdensome monitoring, limiting GCV use in some patients. Quercetin is a flavonoid with antioxidant properties that has demonstrated antiviral therapy against CMV. Although more benign than GCV, quercetin has limited therapeutic value due to its poor solubility. We previously reported that GCV improves hearing thresholds in a murine model of cCMV. We also noted that solubilizing quercetin with poloxamer 188 (P188) and combining with GCV therapy amplified CMV inhibition in murine …

Quantifying And Managing Anthropogenic And Drought Influences On Instream Temperatures, Abbygael Johnson Apr 2023

Quantifying And Managing Anthropogenic And Drought Influences On Instream Temperatures, Abbygael Johnson

Student Research Symposium

The western US is currently experiencing effects of one of the worst droughts in 1200 years. These effects are evident in our rivers, as shown by broad scale reductions in baseflow. This lack of runoff combined with growing demands has resulted in the overallocation of the water contained within our rivers and reservoirs. Water temperature is the key factor in many biological, chemical, and physical processes, making it critical to the health of ecosystems . River temperatures are a function of many factors including weather and tree canopy, but also instream flow volumes and water residence time. When instream flows …

Understanding The Role Of A Putative Type I Polyketide Synthase In Chlorflavonin Biosynthesis, Ammar Mussaji

Student Research Symposium

Flavonoids are an important class of plant secondary metabolites with a variety of biological functions in the development processes of hosts. These molecules have also shown health-benefiting properties such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. As such, they are commonly used as pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. In plants, flavonoids are assembled through a type III polyketide synthase (PKS) and associated tailoring enzymes such as hydroxylase and glycosyltransferase. Some filamentous fungi also produce flavonoids, such as chlorflavonin from Aspergillus candidus. Chlorflavonin is a novel halogenated flavonoid found in nature reported to possess antifungal and anti-tuberculosis activity. Unlike plants, the biosynthetic process of flavonoids …

Glycosylation Of Anti-Tb Agent Chlorflavonin For Combating Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Jie Ren Apr 2023

Glycosylation Of Anti-Tb Agent Chlorflavonin For Combating Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Jie Ren

Student Research Symposium

More than two billion people were infected by the bacterial pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) in 2020. However, during the past 50 years, the first-line (isoniazid, delamanid, and rifampicin) and second-line (capreomycin, streptomycin, and cycloserine) therapies have remained unchanged with disadvantages such as long treatment periods and severe side effects. The slow development of anti-TB drugs cannot combat the fast development of drug resistant M. tuberculosis strains from multidrug-resistant (MDR) into extensively drug resistant (XDR), which further hinders the World Health Organization’s goal to end the global TB pandemic by the year 2035. Flavonoids are a type of natural product with …

This poster summarized the work on the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation of nematic Liquid Crystal Elastomers (LCE). The validations of the potential were performed by comparing the density and nematic to isotropic transition temperature. After the validation, the thermal properties of nematic LCE (glass transition temperature) and the spontaneous deformation were computed for different compositions of LCE. The results show that the MD simulation can capture the relatively large spontaneous deformation but obtain the different values of glass transition temperature with that of the experiment. Further studies will be conducted to investigate the influence of the polymerization process on the …

Glycosylation has profound effects on decreasing toxicity, increasing bioavailability and stability, together with changing bioactivity of polyphenolic compounds. Therefore, polyphenolic glycosides can be used as food additives, therapeutics, and nutraceuticals. Engineered biosynthesis provides an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach to generate polyphenolic glycosides through the use of various glycosyltransferases (GTs) and sugar biosynthetic enzymes. GTs transfer the sugar moieties from …

Compressive Sensing Via Variational Bayesian Inference Under Two Widely Used Priors: Modeling, Comparison And Discussion, Mohammad Shekaramiz, Todd K. Moon Mar 2023

Compressive Sensing Via Variational Bayesian Inference Under Two Widely Used Priors: Modeling, Comparison And Discussion, Mohammad Shekaramiz, Todd K. Moon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Compressive sensing is a sub-Nyquist sampling technique for efficient signal acquisition and reconstruction of sparse or compressible signals. In order to account for the sparsity of the underlying signal of interest, it is common to use sparsifying priors such as Bernoulli-Gaussian-inverse Gamma (BGiG) and Gaussian-inverse Gamma (GiG) priors on the compounds of the signal. With the introduction of variational Bayesian inference, the sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) methods for solving the inverse problem of compressive sensing have received significant interest as the SBL methods become more efficient in terms of execution time. In this paper, we consider the sparse signal recovery …

Microscale Modelling Of Lightning Damage In Fibre-Reinforced Composites, Scott L. J. Millen, Juhyeong Lee Mar 2023

Microscale Modelling Of Lightning Damage In Fibre-Reinforced Composites, Scott L. J. Millen, Juhyeong Lee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

In this work, three-dimensional (3D) finite element simulations were undertaken to study the effects of lightning strikes on the microscale behaviour of continuous fibre-reinforced composite materials and to predict and understand complex lightning damage mechanisms. This approach is different from the conventional mesoscale or macroscale level of analysis, that predicts the overall lightning damage in composite laminates, thus providing better understanding of lightning-induced thermo-mechanical damage at a fundamental level. Micromechanical representative volume element (RVE) models of a UD composite laminate were created with circular carbon fibres randomly distributed in an epoxy matrix. The effects of various grounding conditions (one-, two-, …

Neural Network Flow Optimization Using An Oscillating Cylinder, Meihua Zhang, Zhongquan Charlie Zheng, Yangliu Liu, Xiaoyu Jiang Feb 2023

Neural Network Flow Optimization Using An Oscillating Cylinder, Meihua Zhang, Zhongquan Charlie Zheng, Yangliu Liu, Xiaoyu Jiang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

Flow behaviors of a downstream object can be affected significantly by an upstream object in close proximity. Combined with the neural network algorithms, this concept is used for flow control in this study to optimize the aerodynamic performance of a downstream object. Flow with an oscillating cylinder placed upstream is systematically studied because there are multiple control parameters that influence the flow dynamics around the downstream object. These control parameters are used as the input factors of a back-propagation neural network, and then a revised genetic algorithm is applied to find the optimal set of control parameters. In the current …

Sensitivity Of Optimal Midcourse Correction Scheduling For Robust Cislunar Trajectory Design, David Geller, David Woffinden, Stefan Bieniawski Feb 2023

Sensitivity Of Optimal Midcourse Correction Scheduling For Robust Cislunar Trajectory Design, David Geller, David Woffinden, Stefan Bieniawski

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

A new approach to optimal trajectory design is the determination of optimal trajectories that are robust to initial trajectory dispersions, navigation errors, maneuver execution errors, and environment modeling errors. This paper investigates the sensitivity of cislunar robust optimal trajectory design to launch date, duration of navigation measurement passes, and navigation measurement frequency. For a given cislunar trajectory from translunar injection (TLI) to lunar orbit insertion (LOI), the optimal locations of midcourse corrections, also known as trajectory correction maneuvers (TCM) are determined by minimizing the final 3-σ ∆v subject to a final 3-σ position dispersion constraint for a …

Research into residual strength after lightning strike is increasing within the literature. However, standard test methods for measuring residual compressive strength after lightning strikes do not exist. For the first time, a systematic experimental study is undertaken to evaluate modifications necessary to standard Compression After Impact (CAI) specimen geometry and test jig design to induce specimen failure at the lightning damage region. Four laboratory generated lightning strike currents with peak amplitudes ranging from 25 to 100 kA have been studied. Test set-up modifications were made considering the scale of the lightning damage and its potential proximity to specimen edges. Specimen …
