Improved Sustainability And Efficiency Of Partial Depth Concrete Bridge Deck Repair, Israi I. H. Abu Shanab
Improved Sustainability And Efficiency Of Partial Depth Concrete Bridge Deck Repair, Israi I. H. Abu Shanab
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Recently, significant advances have been made in the development of rapid setting cementitious materials for partial depth bridge deck repair. The rapid set times of these materials allow for traffic to be re-opened onto the bridge deck in several hours versus days once the material has been placed. While this is a substantial improvement in reducing the traffic closure time, a large amount of time is still spent on the removal of damaged and deteriorated bridge deck and in preparing the concrete cutouts for placement of the rapid set material. Partial deck removal is a much more delicate process than …

Convexity Applications In Single And Multi-Agent Control, Olli Nikodeemus Jansson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The focus of this dissertation is in the application of convexity for control problems; specifically, single-agent problems with linear or nonlinear dynamics and multi-agent problems with linear dynamics. A mixture of convex and non-convex constraints for optimal control problems is also considered. The main contributions of this dissertation include: 1) a convexification of single-agent problems with linear dynamics and annular control constraint, 2) a technique for controlling bounded nonlinear single-agent systems, and 3) a technique for solving multi-agent pursuit-evasion games with linear dynamics and convex control and state constraints. The first result shows that for annularly constrained linear systems, controllability …

Low-Erosion Nozzle Materials For Long-Duration Hybrid Rocket Burns, Russell S. Babb
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Hybrid rocket systems, which employ a solid fuel grain and a liquid oxidizer, are a low-cost and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional rocket systems. However, hybrid rockets suffer from an increased nozzle throat erosion rate, which impacts motor performance and reliability. To address this issue several materials and low-erosion nozzle configurations were tested. The results of the testing campaign produced a nozzle that reduce the throat erosion rate five-fold.
The Active Cryocubesat Technology: Active Thermal Control For Small Satellites, Lucas S. Anderson
The Active Cryocubesat Technology: Active Thermal Control For Small Satellites, Lucas S. Anderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Modern CubeSats and Small Satellites have advanced in capability to tackle science and technology missions that would usually be reserved for more traditional, large satellites. However, this rapid growth in capability is only possible through the fast-to-production, low-cost, and advanced technology approach used by modern small satellite engineers. Advanced technologies in power generation, energy storage, and high-power density electronics have naturally led to a thermal bottleneck, where CubeSats and Small Satellites can generate more power than they can easily reject. The Active CryoCubeSat (ACCS) is an advanced active thermal control technology (ATC) for Small Satellites and CubeSats, which hopes to …

Laboratory Modelling Of The Various Components Of Backward Erosion Piping Behavior Due To Converging Flow With Different Constricted Outlets, Ibrahim Ahmed Abdelmotelb Ibrahim
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Backward Erosion Piping (BEP) is an internal erosion mechanism which occurs at the down stream of dams or levees. Two conditions needed for this failure to occur: 1) head of water in the upstream of the dam or the levee to drive the seepage forces, and 2) crack in the roof or the blanket layer of the cohesionless material in the downstream of the dam or a levee. Numerous researches were performed in the past in an attempt to predict the critical gradient for BEP to initiate. Some researches are too conservative and other researches are under predicting the critical …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation presents an analysis of the aerodynamics for an aircraft using a novel, bio-inspired control system. The control system is a rotating tail, that is inspired by the way in which birds use their tail to control their flight. An aerodynamic model for a baseline aircraft and a bio-inspired variant are created by referencing well-known relationships for the aerodynamics of flight, which are then used to analyze the available flight envelope at which each aircraft can reach two different equilibrium states. An analysis of the total aerodynamic control authority of each aircraft is also included along with a preliminary …
Locating Low Head Dams Using A Deep Learning Model In Arcgis Pro With Aerial Imagery, Caitlin R. Arnold
Locating Low Head Dams Using A Deep Learning Model In Arcgis Pro With Aerial Imagery, Caitlin R. Arnold
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Low Head Dams are man-made structures that span the width of a river and allow water to flow over them. Although these structures vary in age and original purpose, some pose a life-threatening danger when recreationalists are entrapped in the reverse current at the toe. Despite these dangerous structures causing many drowning deaths in the USA each year, most low head dams do not have safety regulations and remain unknown to those charged with dam and public safety. Thus, to improve public safety at these structures, the first step is to fully inventory low head dams, so that subsequent efforts …

Probabilistic Verification For Modular Network-On-Chip Systems, Jonah W. Boe
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Modeling physical systems with formal analysis tools can help in the design of more fault-proof systems, by helping to determine if unpredictable or unwanted behavior may occur. Probabilistic verification further advances such processes, by providing quantitative information about the system. More complex systems can especially benefit from formal modeling and verification, as testing the physical system in every possible condition manually, can be extremely complex, and often impossible.
There is a growing interest in the application of Network-on-Chip (NoC) systems. NoCs can help simplify communication between the subsystems of many technologies, including the ever more complex multicore processors being produced. …

Dynamic Inductive Power Transfer Systems With Reflexive Tuning Networks Designed By Machine Learning, Shuntaro Inoue
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation proposes a new way to make dynamic wireless charging systems more affordable. Instead of using one inverter for each transmitter coil, as is typically done, the proposed system uses a single inverter that is connected to multiple transmitter coils. This approach is made possible by reflexive tuning, which allows for high currents to be achieved only on the transmitter coil in use. The system was tested with a 50kW prototype, designed using a combination of neural networks and genetic algorithms. The prototype was tested on both automated rail and vehicle systems. The measured dc-dc efficiency with single and …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
First-generation college (FGC) students are defined as students whose parents do not have a bachelor's or graduate degree. FGC students tend to face more overall challenges in the college environment than their continuing-generation counterparts. Often, FGC students have lower grade-point-averages (GPAs) and are less likely to graduate than their peers. In majors like engineering, the struggles that first-generation college students face can be further magnified. This quantitative study examines the activities FGC students in engineering engage in based on the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Questions from the NSSE cover different educational activities and are categorized into ten educational …
Viability And Performance Of Rf Source Localization Using Autocorrelation-Based Fingerprinting, Joseph L. Ipson
Viability And Performance Of Rf Source Localization Using Autocorrelation-Based Fingerprinting, Joseph L. Ipson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Finding the source location of a radio-frequency (RF) transmission is a useful capability for many civilian, industrial, and military applications. This problem is particularly challenging when done “Blind,” or when the transmitter was not designed with finding its location in mind, and relatively little information is available about the signal before-hand. Typical methods for this operation utilize the time, phase, power, and frequency viewable from received signals. These features are all less predictable in indoor and urban environments, where signals undergo transformation from multiple interactions with the environment. These interactions imprint structure onto the received signal which is dependent on …

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are continually becoming a larger portion of the vehicular fleet on a national and global level. Despite their growth in popularity, several challenges still exist that hinder the practicality and general public’s acceptance of EVs. The limited travel range of EVs, lack of consistent charging stations, and required time to charge EVs are at the forefront of these challenges. The use of Inductive Power Transfer Systems (IPTS) may be part of the solution to the afore mentioned issues.
IPTS embedded in concrete pavement panels allow EVs to charge their batteries while in motion. In order to justify …
The Influence Of Surface Roughness Frequency On Rotating Sphere Aerodynamics, Jack C. Elliott
The Influence Of Surface Roughness Frequency On Rotating Sphere Aerodynamics, Jack C. Elliott
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Solving the problems of increasing highway fuel efficiency, throwing a better curve ball, and preventing an aircraft from stalling all have a common thread: controlling flow separation. Defined by the fast moving flow around an object detaching from the object, flow separation has implications for a broad number of engineering fields. Research regarding flow separation control has led to the understanding that the easiest method for delaying flow separation for a given shape is to vary how turbulent the flow around the object is. Varying this turbulence around an object may be achieved through various methods including changing the …

Understanding And Minimizing The Effects Of Propellant Mean Bulk Temperature Changes In Solid Rocket Motors, Thomas Sorensen
Understanding And Minimizing The Effects Of Propellant Mean Bulk Temperature Changes In Solid Rocket Motors, Thomas Sorensen
Student Research Symposium
Solid rocket propellant typically contains the geometry of an extruded annulus. This propellant, when ignited, burns radially at a rate called the “burn rate”. This rate dramatically affects important motor performance characteristics such as pressure, thrust, and specific impulse. Each different mixture of solid rocket propellant has a sensitivity to initial propellant temperature. The relationship between burn rate and initial temperature sensitivity function are each determined experimentally. This literature review will analyze existing experimental data. The objective of the research is to see if there is a reliable way to predict the burning rate’s temperature sensitivity prior to obtaining new …

Controlling Oxidizer-Fuel Ratio With Vortex Injection In Hybrid Rockets, Max Francom
Controlling Oxidizer-Fuel Ratio With Vortex Injection In Hybrid Rockets, Max Francom
Student Research Symposium
Hybrid motors have existed as a hypothetical propulsion system for decades in a wide range of upper stage rocket motors due to their simple, robust, non-toxic, and versatile nature. However, inherent to hybrids is oxidizer:Fuel ratio (O:F Ratio) shift over time, the elimination of which would remove many potential barriers to hybrid rocket motor usage in most spaceflight applications. The most important and difficult part of analytical models of hybrid rockets is the regression/combustion rate of hybrid fuel. O:F Ratio control is fully dependent on the ability to manipulate this regression independently of Oxidizer mass input. One potential method of …
