This work discusses the problem of unsupervised classification in images. Conventional methods approached this problem with the naive assumption that the relationship among the pixels' information can be expressed sufficiently in a linear manner. However, higher accuracy was established by implementing kernel-based expressions of data to express the non-linear relationship of that data in a linear manner, when mapped in a higher dimensional space. This process allows much more effective clustering performances by increasing the informativeness of the data. Hyperspectral images, being limited in spatial resolution as a tradeoff for the significantly higher number of channels compared to traditional images, …
Robust Training Methods For Deep Neural Networks With A Variety Of Label Noise, Sree Ram Kamabattula
Robust Training Methods For Deep Neural Networks With A Variety Of Label Noise, Sree Ram Kamabattula
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Requirement of significant amount of labeled training data is a major drawback in training deep neural networks (DNNs), due to the presence of mislabeled examples in these datasets. This label noise is shown to have an adverse effect on the generalization performance of DNNs. Thus, reducing the consequences of label noise is of much research value. In this dissertation, we focus on improving our understanding of label noise and, achieving better generalization performance. Due to the lack of ground truth with real world noisy datasets, most researchers create synthetic noisy datasets to develop robust training methods. Among these methods, stopping …

Evaluation Of Recycled Plastic Pins As Shear Keys In Mse Wall Base, Prabesh Bhandari
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls have been widely used as retaining structures due to their flexible nature, a better tolerance against differential settlement, and many other factors. However, external stability problems of MSE walls have been an issue in North Texas over decades. Lateral displacement of the wall occurs, giving rise to sliding failure, when there is insufficient shear strength at the wall base to produce adequate frictional resistance. Such failures can cause significant maintenance, repair, and cost implications for the state department of transportation. Furthermore, MSE walls also undergo global failure due to weak soil conditions along with high …

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by increased blood glucose levels and affects more than 8% of people worldwide (Rutter et. al, 2015). Typically, diabetes is divided into two large subcategories: type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). T1D is an autoimmune disorder caused by the attack of insulin secreting cells by t-cell mediated inflammatory response (Khrraoubi & Darwish, 2015). Currently, islet transplants offer a clinical treatment for restoration of glucose control. However, the current procedure may not be optimal as many transplanted islets do not survive because of the stresses induced during the process (Miki …

Conventional cooling methods for an IC chip uses heat spreader to transfer heat from the chip end of the spreader to the opposite end of the spreader which then uses air or water to remove heat and thereby maintaining the overall temperature. Unfortunately, the heat spreader itself has constraints such as conduction resistance which adds the heat spreader inefficiency. But if we increase the area exposed to the cooling end then this can be improved. This is done by introducing channels at that end. These channels act as fins which give a better shot at cooling the system temperature. These …

Improving Operational Hydrologic Forecasting Via Conditional Bias-Penalized Multi-Sensor Precipitation Estimation And Multi-Model Streamflow Prediction, Ali Jozaghi
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Many multivariate analysis techniques involve minimizing mean square error (MSE) or error variance under unbiasedness. In the presence of observation error, variance minimization tends to introduce negative and positive biases, or conditional bias (CB), over the upper and lower tails of the predictands, respectively. This work describes and evaluates three multivariate merging techniques, 1) adaptive conditional bias-penalized cokriging (CBPCK), 2) conditional bias-penalized Multiple Linear Regression (CBP-MLR), and 3) conditional bias-penalized Bayesian Model Averaging (CBP-BMA) which implements CBP-MLR in place of MLR. CBPCK and CBP-MLR minimize a linearly weighted sum of errors squared and the sum of the Type-II error squared, …

Background: Cycling is a cost-effective means of transportation. Many teenagers cycle to go to schools and ride in neighborhoods. Cyclists are more vulnerable to injuries and fatalities than motor vehicle drivers. With the implementation of autonomous vehicles (AVs), interactions between AVs and road-users are expected to be safer. It is most likely that current young people will be the ones to use these vehicles and interact with them. However, very few past studies have focused on cyclist-AV interaction, with little to no attention toward the teenage cyclist population. Objectives: This study is aimed at examining teenage cyclists’ perceptions of AVs …

The standardized clinical use of photobiomodulation (PBM) across many applications has been obstructed due to the lack of understanding in how each of the parameters affect the end results. Although the optimal parameters for the therapy have been estimated with a level of uncertainty, the positive effects have been documented on cell differentiation, wound healing, brain modulation, etc. These positive effects observed by PBM have been attributed to the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), and ATP along other molecules generated by the stimulation of Cytochrome-C Oxidase (CCO). Although there is much uncertainty surrounding the coupling mechanisms …

This research aspires to develop a systematic approach to minimize the demand and supply gap of products and product expiration in a feasible way. Inventory replenishment policy, uncertain customer demand, and forecast inaccuracy are some of the reasons that create imbalanced stocks in the outlets. Lateral transshipment or redistribution, donation, and promotion have been discussed in the existing literature separately as ways to balance and utilize inventory. Redistribution needs to account for extra transportation costs due to stock transfer. Existing literature on redistribution fails to address products’ physical attributes, valuation of products as a function of time, and constraint on …

A composite is generally defined as a material composed of two or more separate sub-materials that complement each other's characteristics when combined. Composites are widely used in several major industries due to their low density, high strength, and relatively predictable chemical and electrical properties. One of the significant challenges of integrating composites into more diverse fields is the ability to accurately and consistently test for damages. Due to the myriad number of microscopic structures available in composite materials, a single-use testing system is a large contributor to current research. One approach to the non-destructive testing of composites lies in exploiting …

Our community has a widespread knowledge on the damage tolerance and durability of the composites, developed over the past few decades by various experimental and computational efforts. Several methods have been used to understand the damage behavior and henceforth predict the material states such as residual strength (damage tolerance) and life (durability) of these material systems. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS) are such methods, which have been proven to identify the damage states in composites. Our previous work using BbDS method has proven to serve as precursor to identify the damage levels, indicating the beginning of …

The rapid rise of fiber reinforced composite usage in aircraft, spacecraft and automobile industries made the proper comprehension of repair and joining of these materials a crucial aspect. Adhesive bonding is one of the most advantageous and desirable joining and repair technique for fiber reinforced composites. However, the heterogeneity of fiber reinforced composites and the complex interfacial nature of the adhesive bonds, makes most non-destructive evaluation and assessment techniques ineffective to assess the state of the bond. Different manufacturing and surface preparation techniques impart different surface characteristics to the adherends, hence proper understanding of the state of bonds is dependent …
Investigation Of The Channel Hot Carrier (Chc) Stressing Effects And Identification Of The Stress-Induced Oxide Traps Leading To Rts In Pmosfets, Tanvir Ahmed
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Electrical stressing mechanisms are responsible for the generation of stress-induced gate SiO2 defects, in addition to the presence of process-induced oxide traps, in MOSFETs. Random telegraph signal (RTS) can be utilized as a tool to characterize these defects. Channel hot carrier (CHC) stressing is reported to result in the worst degradation in pMOSFETs. However, the effects of CHC on RTS for pMOSFETs are under-reported. The main objective of this work is to investigate the impact of the CHC stressing on pMOSFETs by analyzing RTS. For this reason, the effects of CHC stressing on different RTS parameters are examined. Additionally, responsible …

As the consumption of energy has increased relentlessly over the last few decades, the need for reliable clean energy generation has increased as well. Currently, nuclear power is the only method capable of providing a stable supply of clean energy, although the nuclear energy generation process still requires improvement. Specifically, there is a need to increase efficiencies while reducing the risks of radioactive contamination. It is possible that both these issues may be mitigated using helium as the working fluid. However, the performance of turbomachinery using helium must be evaluated before its use can be implemented. To do this, Balaji …

Data centers are used by organizations for storing, processing and distribution of data. These data centers are run through-out the year due to which their thermal management is a growing concern. A popular way of eliminating such thermal cooling issues is Liquid cooling. Conventionally Liquid cooling involves the supply of constant liquid flow (water or refrigerant) through the IT rack irrespective of the IT load, which in a Multi-chip module causes hotspots and temperature gradients across the module due to non-uniform heating. A dynamic cold-plate and a regulatory flow control device (FCD) is incorporated in this experimental set-up to assist …

Fire is a common hazard that may happen during the lifetime of concrete structures. Thus, it is one of the loads considered in building and tunnel design standards and codes. Dependency of the safety and structural integrity of a building to load-bearing elements such as beams requires the safe design of these elements. Flexural design of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under fire is critical. Typical load and resistance factor design (LRFD) of flexural member at ambient temperature deals with comparing the factored applied load with its capacity. Strength reduction factors are applied to the calculated nominal moment capacity to take …

An accumulation of ice and snow on pavement slabs and bridge decks always adversely impacts driving conditions and results in motorist accidents. The use of the more popular deicing methods, including plowing, salting, and sanding, is limited by their relatively high cost for materials, fuel, maintenance, and labor. Geothermal energy, which is considered a renewable, sustainable, clean (i.e., zero carbon emission), and directly used energy source, has been successfully applied to bridges and pavements for deicing. However, existing geothermal bridge and pavement deicing designs are primarily employed for new bridges where hydronic loops, which are considered internal heating, are embedded …
