Simulation Of A Passive Osmosis-Integrated Electrolyzer For Seawater Electrolysis, Masoomeh Ghasemi
Simulation Of A Passive Osmosis-Integrated Electrolyzer For Seawater Electrolysis, Masoomeh Ghasemi
Theses and Dissertations
Efforts to develop direct seawater electrolysis technology have been ongoing due to the need for pure water in electrolysis and the abundance of seawater. However, progress has been hampered by several issues, including competition with the chlorine evolution reaction, higher membrane resistance, corrosion of electrodes, and scaling from multivalent cations [1]. To avoid these issues, our project has proposed a new reactor that integrates passive osmosis (extracting fresh water from seawater) with electrolysis. In this thesis, we will discuss the operation of the osmosis-integrated electrolyzer and show theoretical predictions of the osmotic pressure differential and water flux/velocity profiles under different …

Theses and Dissertations
Extreme flood events have been persistent throughout history and have challenged human populations around the globe. Over time, scientists and engineers have developed tools and technology to support flood risk management. Most, if not all, of these tools rely on some form of the field of stochastic hydrology. Stochastic hydrology is a broad discipline, but the overarching principle is to use statistical and data-driven techniques to develop an understanding of one or more hydrologic variables (e.g., flood flow or peak storm tide). However, the need for large sample sizes of data that offer insight into all possible combinations of outcomes …

Controlling large-scale dynamic population systems, known as ensemble control, is a pervasive and essential task in many emerging applications from diverse scientific domains. Previous focuses in the area of ensemble control have been placed on seeking open-loop control strategies due to unavailability of state feedback information for each individual system in the ensemble. In this paper, we develop a foundational framework for analysis and control of ensemble systems with closed feedback control loops. We introduce the notion of ensemble moments and construct moment systems associated with the ensemble systems. By extending the classical moment problem in mathematical analysis and statistics, …

Optimization of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE) has become a focus of researchers looking for a reliable way to generate power. A vital component to PEMWE operation is the porous transport layer (PTL) on the anode side, which is where oxygen is produced. The PTL must allow water access to the catalyst layer and remove oxygen simultaneously. In this work, a previously developed imaging technique is used to generate bilayer PTL structures. A multiscale modeling approach was used to study the effect of a bilayer PTL on oxygen evolution and PEMWE performance. First, a micro scale model was used …
The Second-Order Features Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology For Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems (2nd-Fasam-L): Mathematical Framework And Illustrative Application To An Energy System, Dan Gabriel Cacuci
Faculty Publications
The Second-Order Features Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems (abbreviated as “2nd-FASAM-L”), presented in this work, enables the most efficient computation of exactly obtained mathematical expressions of first- and second-order sensitivities of a generic system response with respect to the functions (“features”) of model parameters. Subsequently, the first- and second-order sensitivities with respect to the model’s uncertain parameters, boundaries, and internal interfaces are obtained analytically and exactly, without needing large-scale computations. Within the 2nd-FASAM-L methodology, the number of large-scale computations is proportional to the number of model features (defined as functions of model parameters), as opposed to …

Language comprehension is often affected in individuals with post-stroke aphasia. However, deficits in auditory comprehension are not fully correlated with deficits in reading comprehension and the mechanisms underlying this dissociation remain unclear. This distinction is important for understanding language mechanisms, predicting long-term impairments and future development of treatment interventions. Using comprehensive auditory and reading measures from a large cohort of individuals with aphasia, we evaluated the relationship between aphasia type and reading comprehension impairments, the relationship between auditory versus reading comprehension deficits and the crucial neuroanatomy supporting the dissociation between post-stroke reading and auditory deficits. Scores from the Western Aphasia …
